BY STATE SUPERINTENDENT
TONY EVERS
I have been an advocate for careerand technical education programssince my first years of teaching. Icouldn’t help but notice that the kidswho were truly involved in theseclasses weredriven; they connect-
edtheir learning to theirfuture andthat motivated them to succeed.
That’s why I’m so excited to joinFebruary’s observance of Career andTechnical Education (CTE) Month.During school visits I have made acrossthe state each year since I was electedstate superintendent of public instruc-tion,students and their teachers show-cased the coursework and experiencesthat ground CTE in the real world. And, it’s not just the classroom thatmakes CTE so powerful. It’s the co-opprograms, work-based learning, andapprenticeships as well as opportuni-ties through Career and TechnicalStudent Organizations that help stu-dents learn aboutleadership, team-
work, communications, and criticaland creative thinking as well as gain-ing experiences for the skill-basedcareers employers say they need.
In Wisconsin, more than 88,000high school students, or roughly two-thirds of high schoolers, are takingCTE classes in areas such as health
occupations, marketing and entrepre-neurship, manufacturing, technologyand engineering, agriculture and busi-ness, and family and consumer sci-ence. Partnerships with local business-es and technical colleges supportthese course offerings and allow stu-dents to explore career options, receive industry certification, andearn post secondary credits while pro-gressing toward high school gradua-tion. Transcripted credit isone areathat’s seeing strong growth. Duringthe 2014-15 school year, 24,779 stu-dents earned technical collegecreditswhile in high school, a 78 percentincrease from five years ago.
Because CTE students experiencethe connection between what theylearn and what a future careerdemands, they have a higher gradua-tion rate than other students acrossthe state. It’s a serious mistake tothink CTE is a lesser route. Today’s CTEcoursework requires understanding
core academics applied in relevant,real-world applications. In fact, theapplied academics of CTE are the kindof skill-building every student needsregardless of their plans after highschool, be it the workforce, military-service, technical college, or a two-orfour-year degree.
Coupled with the opportunities of CTE, Wisconsin is piloting academicand career planning. The process willbe in place statewide for the 2017-18school year to help students startingin sixth grade identify personalstrengths and interests. Because aca-demic and career planning is compre-hensive, involvingparents, teachers,
and the community, it gets evthinking early about possibilitmatch a student’s interests ainformed by workforce needs. Imean a student takes certain aic classes to build a foundatiocareer, joins an after- school to gain some out-of-classroom
ences, or works an apprenticeexperience thereal-world of a field. Overall, academic and planning will give kids more over their future and help theto graduate college and career
Whether our students take class to get a glimpse of a career path or they concentraseries of courses that jumptechnical degree or industry cetion, there’s lots of opportunlifetime learning and success tCTE. Join me in celebrating CarTechnical Education Month aimportance of CTE classes and cal careers.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Warhawks lead North Shore
BY THOMAS J. MCKILLENMANAGING EDITOR
The Germantown girls basketball team stillleads the North Shore Conference, but theirbiggest rivals made it clear Feb. 2 that keepingthe lead wouldn't be easy.
Homestead reeled off 14 straight pointsover three minutes toward the end of the gameto top Germantown 78-66. Afterward,Germantown still was the North Shore leaderwith an 8-2 record while having a 14-4 overallrecord but Homestead was next with a 7-2conference record and a 12-5 overall mark.
"They made plays. They had a great nightoffensively and they were due for one.Unfortunately, it didn't come against some-body else," Germantown Coach Matt Stuve saidof Homestead. "They had a great offensivenight."
The game featured several scoring out-bursts. A 9-2 run gave Homestead a 26-10 leadafter Taylor McIlwraith converted a three-point basket at the 7:51 mark of the first half. But Germantown rallied and cut Homestead'slead to 36-30 following a basket by PiperBrown with 55 seconds left before halftime.
Germantown scored the first basket of thesecond half but Homestead scored 10 points
and held a 45-33 lead following two freethrows by McIlwraith at the 15:03 mark of thesecond half. A six point run by Germantown
cut Homestead's lead to 45-39 following a bas-ket by Kenzie Schmitz. The Highlanders con-tinued to pull out to a lead againstGermantown with Germantown cutting thelead. Germantown finally caught up withHomestead and took a 65-64 lead on a basketby Schmitz with 3:58 remaining.
"Every time we made a run, got up, they(Homestead) made plays," Stuve said. "They've
been saving up all those three-pointers andeverything for tonight, haven't seen that onfilm for awhile."
Chloe Marotta gave Homestead the leadwith two free throws at the 3:35 mark, spark-ing the 14-point run that closed out the gamefor Homestead.
McIlwraith was the leading scorer forHomestead with 25 points while Christal Hearnadded 17 points and Marotta added 16 pointsfor the Highlanders. Schmitz and Olivia Verdinled Germantown with 23 points each.
Stuve later added he thought Homestead"would cool down a little bit" in the secondhalf, but the Highlanders stayed on the attackand kept making plays.
"At the end of the day, we're still in firstplace. We just lost our wiggle room, but we
have four games left to put another number onthat banner, and that's going to be our focusgoing forward.
