Sergeant:
Sergeant Daniel ran an interesting and entertaining session. A highlight of the session was describing how Adrian
failed to back a winner when he mistook the “G” on the form for Gallops but mistakenly backed the “G” for
Greyhounds instead… oh dear!!!
Guest Speaker: Gerrard Callinan.
Chairman Lyndon introduced Gerrard, one of our newest members, as “…the voice of the ABC for a number of
years.” Lyndon recalled his incisive and probing questions when interviewed in his capacity as Wellington Shire CEO
and his pleasure working with Jenny O’Neill, Gerrard’s wife as a Shire Councilor and guest of the Club this evening.
Gerrard presented a fascinating and very amusing “Job Talk” entitled “How the hell did I get here?” We ventured on
a journey from… “The bull ring (Birmingham) to the Paris end of Gippsland (Sale)”
Gerrard was born in Birmingham UK to Irish immigrant parents. He has 2 brothers and 2 sisters and credits his parents
for teaching him the value of hard work. Gerrard’s quotable quote sums up his optimistic view of life … “If you are
born white, male and born in the first world, you have won life’s lottery”.
Gerrard has had a varied and unusual career path from his first job working in a butcher’s shop and then as a lifeguard.
He then, aged 19, he trained as a Psych Nurse for 3 years before deciding to cycle to Australia! This adventure led him
through such places as Iraq in the height of summer which, in retrospect, Gerrard decided was not a great idea.
Finally arriving in Melbourne he worked as a psych nurse and really enjoyed Melbourne.
At this time, he met Jenny, left nursing and studied Media Studies. On completion of his course, he moved to an ABC
job in Shepparton. During that time, he was asked to fill in for a few months at Sale and is still here. Gerrard rose to
the position of station manager for 3/4 years and has now been working for Gippsland Water for 3 years.
In breaking news, Gerrard had resigned from Gippsland Water and is planning to make use of his personal training
qualifications and his passion for fitness and exercise in a business venture. He is also developing an Oral History
Project as well.
President Rod thanked Gerrard for an… ‘Informative, enlightening and amazing talk”.
Some wise advise from DG Elect Don for Gerrard
