mentally strong and therefore better Rotarians.

Well what a great night of celebration for everyone. We acknowledged the wonderful contribution made by
the Rotary Club of Sale under the leadership of President David Strauss and his board and welcomed our
new President Rachel Strauss in what may have been a first for Rotary: a husband handing the reins to his
wife.
Chairman Daniel Smolenaars commenced the meeting by calling upon Rod Exton for the Koori
acknowledgement.

Daniel then invited David Tulloch to deliver the Rotary
Invocation which proved to be a meaningful and quite moving
part of the evening.
Don Ripper, D.G. Nominee, then presented an interesting and
instructive Rotary Toast which was replied to by past D.G.
Charlie Speirs who used the opportunity to acknowledge the
great work accomplished by the Club under President David.
Chairman Daniel then announced the apologies for the evening
before everyone enjoyed the excellent main course provided by
Oneills.

Following the main course, Presidents David presented his
Annual Report with lots of cheerful reflections and referred
everyone to the printed version detailing a wonderfully
successful year.

As part of his presentation, David had the great pleasure in announcing our latest Paul Harris Fellow,
no other than past President and long serving secretary Laurie Smyth. David outlined
Laurie’s long and meritorious Rotary career, especially this year as David’s secretary/ “wing man”. Laurie
was also acting treasurer, and has had a long history of service to the community in many capacities
including the Historical Society and Touch Football. Laurie’s wife Jill and son Cameron helped Laurie
celebrate his well-deserved honour.

The evening concluded with the induction of new President Rachel Strauss by past DG Charlie, ably
assisted by husband David. Rachel outlined her exciting plans for the coming year and introduced her new
board before unveiling the new Rotary Theme, “Be a Gift to the World”.

Bishop Kay Goldsworthy
At The Bowling Club

Bishop Kay Goldsworthy, the first woman consecrated a bishop in the Anglican Church of Australia, was
installed as the 12th Bishop of Gippsland on Saturday 21 March 2015.
It is the latest “first” for Bishop Goldsworthy, who is an Assistant Bishop of Perth,
where she has worked since 1988. She was among the first women in Australia to
be ordained deacon in 1986, priest in 1992 and, in 2008, became a bishop.
Bishop Goldsworthy is the first woman to lead a diocese in Victoria and only the
second in Australia, after Bishop Sarah Macneil was appointed to the Diocese of
Grafton early in 2014.
Raised in Melbourne, Bishop Goldsworthy studied for the ministry at Trinity
College, Parkville, and served in the parishes of Thomastown-Epping and Deer Park-St Albans in the
Diocese of Melbourne before moving to Western Australia in 1988 as Chaplain of Perth College. She was a
Canon of St George’s Cathedral, Rector of suburban Applecross, Area Dean of Fremantle and Archdeacon
of the Southern Region of Perth diocese. At the time of her appointment as bishop in 2008, she was
Administrator and Registrar of the diocese.
Bishop Goldsworthy, 58, is married to Benjamin James and the couple has twin adult sons, Tom and Ben.
