GEPS NEWS Term 1, Week 9 Thursday 23 March , 2017 Glendale East Public School 8 Margot Street GLENDALE 2285 Phone: 4954 9551 Fax: 4956 6248 Message from the Principal.. PBL Mascot Design Thank you to all the parents who came in to help design our PBL mascot on Friday of Week 7. The students came up with some great designs with the most common themes being cockatoos, kookaburras and snakes. Our students have had a chance to vote for their favourites in class, our staff will have a vote and at our cross country carnival the designs will be displayed for our parents to have input into which design we adopt as our PBL Mascot. Whilst talking about PBL, our focus for the fortnight is our SAFE value and in particular keeping our hands and feet to ourselves. This is an important social skill for all students to learn. Our staff will be constantly reminding our students of this focus and it would be great if parents and carers could use the same language at home to reinforce this message. Easter Hat Parade A note went home recently advising parents that our Easter Hat parade will be held on the last day of term, Friday 7th April. All students from Kindergarten to Year 2 will participate. Students from Years 3-6 will watch the parade. Parents are invited to attend the parade and also to help make your students hat in class with them during the morning. If your child didn’t bring a note home or you would like more information, please see the front office or your child’s teacher. Assembly Times Due to scheduled teacher planning meetings this coming Monday, our normal assembly times will be moved from the usual Monday to the Thursday of next week. As a more permanent move, our assemblies will now start at 2:05 pm to ensure our students can leave the school on the bell. Please see your classroom teacher for more information.

Uniform As the days start to get cooler, our students will be needing their winter uniform. Please ensure you’re well prepared for your child’s uniform needs by placing orders early. I would also like to remind all parents that Melissa Rawe runs our uniform service on a voluntary basis and does a fantastic job of keeping up with orders. If you need to leave a message for Melissa, please do so through the front office. Fete After months of planning, our Fete is now only days away. Once again I would like to thank the entire P&C for their efforts in organising the event and in particular our P&C President Melissa Ott who has worked tirelessly to ensure that the fete is a success. I hope that the weather is kind (for a change) and we have a great

turnout on the day. It would be great to see lots GEPS families there as all money raised will go towards resources for our school. Lunch Time Eating Trial As was advised in previous newsletters, we recently held a trial of a changed eating time for our students. Whilst there were some elements of this change which were beneficial, overall, our staff felt as though the resultant lengthened time of “play time” resulted in increased issues on the playground. As a result, eating time will be moved back to its original time of 11:15 am

Public Speaking

Congratulations to the following students who represented Glendale East Public School at the Zone Public Speak-

ing Finals at Booragul Public School.

A special congratulations goes to Alex Holliday who received a Highly Commended Award for her speech on the

day. Well done Alex!

In writing students are learning that we need to ‘hook’ the reader’s attention quickly and we can do this through writing Sizzling Starts. Students also know that we sometimes need to ‘Ban the Boring Bits’ in our writing as we don’t always need to know what a character ate for breakfast!! Students have also had positive feedback to our reading/spelling warm ups of a morning and are learning that words can be broken into syllables or can be segmented. Last week each student discussed with me what they wanted to improve or get better at in their learning. We call them our Personal Learning Goals (PLG) and students were very mature in their discussions. There was a real range of PLG in both reading and writing. Some students are focusing on wanting to improve the amount of sight words they can read or others might be focussing on using more imaginative words in their writing. Once a student reaches their goal the class will celebrate that child’s success and then they will take the stick it note home to show parents. In science have done lots of different hands on activities to learn about water and how we use it in our environment. Some of these include experimenting and playing with water, where we used our senses to describe water and talked about our different experiences with it.

The last two weeks of the term is sure to be just as busy with lots of fun learning continuing to take

place.

1/2M News

One afternoon we walked through the school to find out how water is used in our school environment and found a variety of water sources. We also experi-mented with pouring water on different surfaces to see what would happen, looking at cause and effect.

This term is just flying by with lots of interesting things happening in our classroom. In literacy we have settled into the routine of Daily 5. Some of the activities we focus on is the Super Six reading strategies. After reading a quality literature book such as ‘Big Rain Coming’, students respond through visualising, making predictions or summarising.

P & C News

2017 Fete With the fete a few days away things are coming together. The fete will open at 10 am. Mr Forbes has happily agreed to be dunked in the dunk tank. So come and see him drop. Enjoy the many market stalls, car show and food. Let the kid’s burn off some energy. Remember money raised from any of our P and C fundraisers goes back to helping your kids gain a great education. Any one that would like to volunteer is greatly appreciated. Just leave your details at the office or see Mel Ott, or just turn up on the day. Raffle tickets continue to be sold and will be sold on the day. 2017 Cross Country P and C were approached by the school with the suggestion of a sausage sizzle on the day of the cross country. P and C are happy to provide a sausage sizzle for students and parents. A note will go home this week. Canteen will be open as usual. Entertainment books Entertainment books can be ordered with money from each book sold going back to the school forms are available at the office. Uniforms Due to our current supplier of our dresses and jackets being sold to a company who sources there products from overseas, P and C have had to source a new supplier. The new supplier is from Australia. As such it does take time for the new supplier to set up for our items. Dresses and jackets will be available at the beginning of next term. Families who have ordered these items will be contacted when they come in. P and C meetings With the next P and C meeting falling in the school holidays, the next meeting will be 8

th

of May at 6:15 pm in the library.

If you are unable to make the meeting there will be a sheet on the table outside the office

for families to leave anything they would like to discuss.

GEPS Canteen News

Please ensure your child is aware that they must place their order at the canteen by 9:15. This will ensure their food is ready for them at lunch time. Our canteen is only open on Tuesdays through to Fridays. Please do not send your child with a lunch order on Mondays. The school is very fortunate to have our excellent, long serving canteen manager Shaz run our canteen. From time to time we need more volunteers to help out. If you would like to volunteer your time, Shaz is always interested in hearing from you. Please approach her at the canteen if you’re interested. From time to time parents have new ideas about the canteen menu. Please be aware that our school conforms to the Healthy School Canteen Policy and any changes need to meet these guidelines. If you do have a suggestion, please feel free to let Shaz know in the canteen.
