FOREWORD
The Third International Geostatistics Congress was held in the papal palace at Avignon from 5th to 9th September, 1988.
In the five years since the last international congress at Lake Tahoe in California, geostatistics has made considerable theoretical advances and the range of applications has greatly widened.
On the theoretical side, the question of the internal consistency of the models has been raised. This is crucial, in particular, in nonlinear estimation. New models for random functions have been developed, and others from mathematical morphology and random set theory are now being used in geostatistics. The relationship between fractal models and geostatistical ones has been studied.
On the practical side, even though applications in mining remain important, the role of geostatistics in hydrology and in the petroleum industry has greatly increased. In both the mining and the petroleum industries, the need for methods of simulating the geometry of ore bodies and reservoirs is felt. New applications are now being made in such diverse fields as soil science, oceanography, agriculture, image analysis and teledetection.
The papal palace in Avignon proved an excellent site for the congress, by providing a forum that encouraged discussion. The Organizing Committee hopes that this atmosphere of innovation and discussion will come through to readers of the proceedings.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
The Organizing Committee would like to thank the members of the four scientific conittees who had the difficult task of selecting the papers to be presented for their work, and also the referees who reviewed the papers. Their conscientious work considerably improved the quality of the articles.
The congress was made possible by the financial aid of certain companies and international associations. The Organizing Committee would like to thank them publicly for generously sponsoring a session.
Alcan International Ltd (Canada)
de Beers consolidated Mines Ltd (South Africa)
