ENRICHING DOWNTOWN

This building is designed to help revive the north side of downtown Big Rapids with the main cityscape of the original downtown of Big Rapids. The building was designed based on the concept of connections. The floor plan and form of the building were derived by connecting major hubs around the downtown area. The site provides a home for the Big Rapids farmers market. The building includes retail stores on the first level, and residential housing on the remaining levels. Attached to the building is an existing donut shop that is being remodeled to fit in with the new design concept.

This is a conceptual site that is designed to contain a visitor’s nature center in the middle of the woods.The building is designed based on the concept of minimal impact. The building is designed on columns and made to look like it’s floating to minimize the impact on the site. The site features a boardwalk that extends throughout the building to help guide people through and out of the building. Each space inside the building is designed to frame a specific view of the site.

This is an addition to the existing Granger building on Ferris State University’s campus. The addition provides space for the architecture and facility management department. The concept used for the design of the building is the square forms that are pre-existing from the Granger building attached. The addition extends over the nearby West Building and integrates part of West Building into the newly designed space.

Personal Role: Researched the existing Granger building and came up with cube forms to incorporate into the new addition. I also modeled the building and site using SketchUp. I also rendered the images using Kerkythea and put the final design board together for presentation.

This project is designed to propose a new concept for the courtyard on Ferris State University’s campus that is located between Swan building, and the National Elastomer Center building. A glass enclosure was proposed to make the space useful year-round and to modernize the older design of the existing buildings. The proposed design allows for new lounge spaces and brings the outdoor feel indoors.

Personal Role: Collaborated with the group on design ideas and proposed the idea of enclosing the space because of the harsh winters. I also modeled the glass enclosure using SketchUp and designed and modeled the lounge spaces.

This was a design competition called I Like Design that allows a person to design a “futuristic” space. A person was to choose any retail space and to design it in any way they preferred. The site chosen is in New York City and the retail space is to be used as a men’s athletic store. The design is based on the concept of “broken arches” and starts with broken arches from the exterior of the space and integrates the arches throughout the interior of the retail space. The interior retail space features LED towers that feature touch screen areas for shoppers to browse and purchase items instantly.

This project was designed to propose a new use for existing GR&I Railroad Depot located in Big Rapids, Michigan. The design includes research on costs and funding for the new use of the depot. The proposal included taking the Depot back to its historical architecture and converting it into an art gallery and lounge space. The site also features an outdoor restroom and trailer parking because the site is to remain as a trail head for people walking, running, and snowmobiling. The proposal also features a new design-build structure that can be used for various lectures and events.

This is a shelter designed to provide space to sleep and study. The shelter is designed to not have plumbing and electricity. The space is proposed near Niagara Falls and is designed to take advantage of the views of the falling water.

This outdoor classroom provides a place for exterior lecture space. The site is located in the northeast quad on Ferris State University’s campus. The outdoor classroom is designed with strong rectilinear forms and features an operable glass wall that allows for privacy during lectures. The classroom is sunken into the ground because of the existing nature of the site. The classroom structure was designed with legal codes in mind and features a ramp to abide by ADA regulations.

This is an outdoor restroom that is designed near a newly built bandshell. The site is located near Canadian Lakes near Big Rapids, Michigan. The restrooms is designed with strong geometric forms that allows for natural day lighting from clerestory windows. The main purpose with this project is to research specific codes and to actually design a workable and feasible structure. Once the structure was designed, working construction drawings were formed.

This park was designed with the concept of unity. The proposed site for the park is located near the Canadian Lakes community in Michigan. The proposed park features a covered pavilion designed to fit in as part of the natural landscape and features a natural playground to help provoke creative ways for children to play. The site also features a canoe loading and unloading area, a rain garden, and a fire pit to unite the community together. The main project was designed to look at details and learn how things would actually be built and put together on site.

This project required on site measurements and re-creation of working drawings to give an architecture firm to create design ideas for the remodel of Howmet Playhouse located in Whitehall, Michigan. The architect wanted working drawings to be able to use for future construction drawings of a new renovation.

Personal Role: Field measured the exterior of the building and created the working drawings of the exterior using Revit. Worked mainly on the exterior of the building and created exterior elevations.
