Main task

• The main task is to create a front cover, contents page and double page spread for a new music magazine which we were to create and edit ourselves using the computers and software we were give. We were to plan and carry out a photo shoot using the our models who we chose for ourselves.

Results summary

• From the results of my questionnaire I can clearly see that in general people wanted a cheap magazine with a small amount of content which was focuses around the rock genre, also leading to it having a darker colour scheme than many other mainstream magazines such at MTV etc.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms + conventions of real media products?

Page 26: George kingham coursweork

This is my magazine front cover which is based on the rock genre theme. As can be seen from the dark colour theme.

The masthead attracts the attention along with the colour contrasts of the magazine, purely to draw in customers.

Pull quote, my pull quote is used to draw in customers to want to read the section quoted.

Page 27: George kingham coursweork

What type of institution would distribute your magazine?

• The magazine that would be publishing my magazine should be a company who produce rock music and similar music. Mainly because there will already be a fan base surrounding the company.

• This would mean many people would have a look and most likely purchase the magazine. As apposed to publishing my magazine through a company who produce pop music magazines.

• I have decided to go with IPC due to the fact that they produce genres surrounding the rock and alternative genres of music.

Page 28: George kingham coursweork

IPC

• IPC was produced in 1968 and they produce popular magazines such as NME which is a rock and alternative music magazine. IPC magazine produces within the UK and sells 350million magazines annually from magazines such as NME

Page 29: George kingham coursweork

Reasons• Genre, IPC media produces very popular magazines surrounding the

rock and alternative music genre, being that IPC are known for rock music and alternative music magazine it makes sense to go with a company that are successful In doing so.

• People all around the world who are subscribed to emails from IPC media will receive updates on news and new features of their magazines. By going with IPC as my producer millions of people will receive updates that my magazine is the latest in their fleet of magazine editions such as NME, in doing this it will create a huge amount of interest and also generate sales, making the magazine successful.

• The style of magazines in comparison to my magazine are very similar in colour theme (dark colours) and placement of images and words.

Page 30: George kingham coursweork

1. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

• My target audience is anyone who would associate themselves with the rock music genre, by using the band names and colours I have, I have met the needs and demands of a rock music fan by including the sorts of themes and artists which they would want to see within the magazine. The age for my target audience is not specific and can range from younger people around the age of 13 to people right up into people in their 60’s. If you were to compare my magazine to a current popular rock magazine such as Kerrang! You would see similarities in the respect of colour, theme and band choices etc. The reason I have chosen to represent this particular social group is mainly because I have a huge interest in rock music myself, therefore designing a rock magazine was close to home and something I wouldn’t stutter on with the design and contents.

Page 31: George kingham coursweork

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of

real media products? My magazine is very similar to magazines of the same genre, rock. It shows similar designs throughout the magazine, in the respect of the dark colour schemes and the fonts being bold and having a slight eerier tone to them. I believe giving an eerier effect to the fonts gives it a scarier theme to it, which is linked with rock music in many people’s eyes. The difference between my magazine and other similar ones are the fact that I don’t include posters and free items with the magazine; due to the fact that I believe they can clog up the magazine space meaning you cannot have as much content if your plan was to have maximum content. My front cover is where I spent most of my time developing and designing the cover, I know that with some popular magazines when you are having a look at it, if it really catches your eye you can have already thought ‘yes I’m going to buy this’ before you even look at the price meaning that the customer is then more than likely to buy the magazine no matter what the circumstances from that point forward. In many rock themed magazines having a gothic image or theme to go as the background of the front page is also a very popular method. In my magazine having a blood spray themed background added to the eerie effect. The photo shoot for the 2 people in my photo was specially done for the magazine I had wanted to do from the start, by setting out to design a rock magazine having the correct poses for the camera was made as much easier task for myself, by having a still look directly into the camera with no emotion from one, and a confident intimidating look from the other person really gave an eerier effect in my opinion. Having a box near each photo to give minimal detail related to the photo was also another positive effect on my magazine, not only does it give the readers a small insight in to what the photo is or who it is related to but also in their interests.

Page 32: George kingham coursweork

Who would be the audience for your media product?

My main focus for my magazine is to target fans of the rock music genre, for reasons that rock music for starters is my favoured genre of music and would be much easier for me to think of ideas for the magazine but also as I would have a better understanding for what appeals to rock music fans. The rock music genre is extremely diverse in its sound in comparison to other genres, and many stereotypes can show the differences between genres, such as rock and pop etc. this is also another reason why making a rock magazine is much easier to show the genre in comparison to the other available genres.

Page 33: George kingham coursweork

How did you attract your audience?

• Attracting the fans of rock music is a relatively straight forward task, by using a darker colour scheme such as the usage of Black, Red and other dark colours is one way of separating it from other genres. Not only by using colours but also using the photos and names of well known bands and song names, this was a good way of attracting true rock fans as they would know straight away for example that Green Day are a well known rock band, seeing straight away that my magazine is a rock magazine, as opposed to a pop magazine. The final way I attracted rock fans to my magazine was by the use of images related to rock music, such as electric guitars, flames and eerie editing to give a more deep rock effect to it, changing the way my models on the front page looked towards the camera and the facial expressions they used towards the camera. Using expressions of seriousness and to some extent anger towards the camera, exposing the rock music stereotype.

Page 34: George kingham coursweork

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing your product?

• The only technological device I had used to construct my magazine was a computer, with the help of software such as Adobe fireworks and also Adobe Photoshop. These two software's were able to assist me in creating the magazine when it had came to the design of the background to give a rock themed effect but also for editing my models to remove the background where the photo was taken and also to remove major impurities in the photo, such as a small spot on the face etc. Purely to give it a perfect finish and to be finished to the most professional standard possible. I have learnt that photoshop can have a huge effect on the final outcome of your magazine in terms of editing, it is an extremely complex software but once you know how to use it you are then able to do many things with photos to give it the bet final finish possible.

Page 35: George kingham coursweork

Prelim Task and what I have learnt along the way in the construction process of creating the magazine

• From the prelim task I can see that my skills in editing and understanding of layout of magazines themselves has increased and developed significantly. At first I was unable to construct a well designed and constructed magazine with maximum effect for the target audience, whereas in my rock magazine I was able to target my specific audience efficiently and strongly. I believe this is a direct link with my understanding of the software and competence with the software increasing and the overall final quality of my product increasing. From the first time using the software to my most recent magazine I can see that my skills and application of the software to my product has increased significantly, I believe that my work has improved significantly and now shows signs of improvement from the first task completed.
