Break waterOffshore breakwaters, also called bulkheads, reduce the intensity of wave action in inshore waters and reduce coastal erosion. They are built some distance away from the coast or built with one end linked to the coast.

Disadvantages of break waters are they can slowly damage the beach them selves.

Sea wallAdvantages of having a sea wall:It is mainly to stop the sea flooding the land .It protects the coast line. Its built on the inland part of a coast to stop strong waves damaging the land behind.

Disadvantages of having a sea wall:The visual side of things,it doesn’t look very decrotive .They can also be very expensive costing up to £2000-£5000 per metre.

Gabions

Gabions are low costing costal protection agaisnt erosion. They are made out of a metal mesh holding rocks and sand in,stopping them falling onto beaches.

A down side would be that the metal wire would have a lot of weight to hold especially if the rocks slowly move inside the cage of the gabion, and there for the wire could snap.

GroynesGroynes create beaches,or stop them being worn away by long shaw drift. Some groynes are under water, called submerged groynes. They are a physical barrier to stop sediment tranport in the direction of long shaw drift.

REVETMENTSRevetmenst are a very effective way of stopping erosion taking place. They reduce wave scour and rebound, the main causes of erosion. Revetmenst slope and absorb wave energy well.

The disadvantage of a revetment is what it looks like because concrete is amd ugly material especially to use on a coast line.
