About these maps• First of all, I have used a somewhat unconventional projection system so the true
distances between places are not scaled equally across the map. This was to give more room on the map to the London boroughs (which otherwise obscure each other).
• Second, even given the above it was necessary to move some points to stop them covering each other. In a few cases this and the use of a point to represent the local region make it less obvious that the two places share a boundary even though they do.
• Third, although the rough geography of London is correct, individual boroughs are not necessarily in their true locations because the map has been distorted.
• Third, if you are wondering about the map classes, they split the data at the 25th, 50th, 70th, 85th and 95th percentiles of the distribution. It is therefore a non-linear scale, to emphasise the locations where the highest percentages of the group are found.
• ‘Greatest contrast’ means the greatest percentage point difference between regions sharing a boundary.
