2011 Census: Introduction and background

• Census day – 27th March 2011

• Response: 92% of people in city

• ‘Usual resident population’: Anyone who was in the UK who had stayed in the UK or intended to stay in the UK for a period of 12 month or more

• ‘Black and Minority Ethnic communities’: All residents who are not White English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish or British

2011 Census: Usual resident populationBrighton & Hove population: 273,369 - increase of 25,552 (10.3%) since 2001

• largest increase in population- 15 to 24 year olds (11,798 people, 34.3%)- 40 to 49 year olds (11,172 people, 35.8%)

• largest decrease in population- 70 to 79 year olds (3,243 people, 18.2%)

• People aged 20 to 24 make up the largest proportion of the city’s population (28,129 people, 10.3%).

Younger population:• Residents aged under 65 have increased by nearly 15%.• Residents aged over 64 have decreased by nearly 12%.

The proportion of males (49.8%) to females (50.2%) in the city is nearing equal (2001 Census: males 48.4%, females 51.6%).

The proportion of males to females is relatively even across all age group until the age of 75.

Beyond the age of 75 the proportion of female residents increases as age increases with 73.5% of residents aged over 90 female.

• Households with at least one resident: 121,540 – 6.2% increase

• One person Households: 44,294 (36%)– High compared to South East (29%) and England (30%)– Slight fall since 2001 census

• Households with dependent children: 29,809 (25%)– Low compared to South East (29%) and England (29%)– Fall of 3,967 households (15%)

• High proportion of cohabiting couples. Low proportion of married couples

• 2,356 people in same sex civil partnerships: highest in England and Wales

2011 Census: Ethnicity• Largest ethnic community: White UK/British – 220,018 (80.5%)

- Fall as a proportion of the total population- Lower than the South East (85%) and similar to England (80%)

• BME community: 53,351 (19.5%)- Increase of 23,668 (80%)- Higher than the South East (15%) and similar to England (20%)

• All BME groups apart from Irish have seen a significant increase in their population

- All mixed / multiple ethnic groups: 4,799 to 10,408 (117%)- Other Asian: 918 to 3,267 (256%)- Chinese: 1,305 to 2,999 (130%)- Black African 1,380 to 2,893 (110%)

2011 Census: Disability•For 20,445 people (7.5%) day to day activities are ‘limited a lot’. This is slightly higher than in the South East (6.9%) and lower than England (8.3%).

•For 24,124 residents (8.8%) day to day activities are ‘limited a little’. This is similar to the proportions found in the South East (8.8%) and England (9.3%).

•For 20,913 people (26.1%) aged 65 or over their day to day activity is limited either a little or a lot.

2011 Census: Provision of unpaid care• 23,987 people (8.8%) provide unpaid care to a family

member, friend or neighbour who has either a long term illness or disability or problems related to old age.

• This is slightly lower compared to the South East (9.8%) and England (10.2%).

• This is a rise of 2,164 people since the 2001 Census, though it remains the same proportion of the total population.

• 16,401 people (68.4%) provide unpaid care for 1 to 19 hours a week.

• 4,716 people (nearly 2%) provide more than 50 hours a week of unpaid care.

2011 Census: Transport• Car and van ownership: 38.2% of residents do not own a car or

van.• The total number of cars and vans increased by 4,348 to 104,397

(2001-2011). However, the number of households also increased so there are an average of 0.86 cars per household compared to 0.87 in 2001.

• Travel to work: – Driving is most popular but is still a low figure in the city: 37.2%

compared to 60.8% in the South East. Compared to 2001 6.0% fewer residents drive to work.

– Almost double the national and regional averages of residents walk to work in Brighton & Hove (20.6%). 4.9% cycle to work.

– 13.6% of residents use buses to get to work with, compared to 4.5% in the South East and 7.5% in England.

• The proportion of people who work mainly from home has fallen since 2001, but still remained above the regional and national averages at 7.6% in 2011.

2011 Census: Housing

• Household spaces: 126,827 household spaces in Brighton & Hove, an increase of 6.6% since the 2001 census. Of these, 121,540 are usually occupied (95.8%) - 5,287 are not (4.2%).

• Accommodation types: Comparatively low proportions of detached (10.2%) and semi-detached (19.1%) properties. High proportion of flats, apartments and converted houses (50.2%).

• There has been a significant increase in the number of purpose built flats with 5,656 more recorded in 2011 than in 2001.

• Our owner occupier rate is low at 53.3%, compared to 67.6% in the South East and 63.4% in England.

2011 Census: Housing (cont)

• The private rented sector increased by 45.7% between 2001 and 2011 with 28.0% of households now renting their home from a private landlord, compared to 14.7% in the South East.

• Household size: 2.1 people per household - the smallest household size in the South East.

• Occupancy rates: 8,168 or 6.7% of Brighton & Hove’s households are considered to be overcrowded using the 2011 census measure of having one less bedroom than needed.

• Central heating: 5,406 households (4.4%) without central heating. This is less than half those recorded in the 2001 census.
