Used different ways to show “where you are” by smoke signals, celestial navigation, homing pigeons, and magnetic compass until 1200 A.D.

How They Work
Typically, geo-location apps do two things
Report your location to other users
Associate real-world locations to your location
How They Work
Smartphones are fitted with a GPS Chip
Uses satellite data to calculate your exact position
Can then be mapped using services such as Google Maps.
When GPS is unavailable, apps use cell phone towers to triangulate your position
Both techniques can be used together, as well as local Wi-Fi networks
