A genre is a way of classifying or categorising texts. There are many types of different genres and subgenres, which are often referred to a hybrid genres. Typical genres can include;

- Horror

- Comedy

- Thriller

- Action

- Romance

- Fantasy

- Sci-fi

Hybrid Genre

A hybrid genre is a cross between different genres to create new opportunities for films to expand upon and explore new themes and topics. Examples of hybrid genres include;

- Romantic Comedy (Notting Hill, 1999)

- Comedy Horror (Shaun of the Dead, 2004)

- Romantic Fantasy (Twilight, 2008)

Hybrid Genre

Many critics believe that all films are forms of hybrid genres as they consist of so many different multi generic elements. Staiger, Bordwell & Thompson and Neale are all believers of this theory of overlapping genres.
