Children’s Day is celebrated all over India on 14th of November to commemorate the birth anniversary of first Indian Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. Jawaharlal Nehru, who was fondly called ‘Chacha Nehru’ or ‘Chachaji’ or ‘Uncle Nehru’. He was known for his love for children. This day is celebrated as a tribute to Nehru who gave emphasis to the significance of giving love and affection to children and considered them as the bright future of India.

Keen on the development and education of children in the country, Pandit Nehru oversaw the establishment of some of the most prominent educational institutions in India. His vision for the development of youth played a major role in the setting up of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, or AIIMS and the Indian Institutes of Technology. He even initiated the establishment of the Indian Institutes of Management.

As prime minister of independent India, Nehru had initiated socio-economic policies of the idealistic socialist kind. Nehru was also a prolific writer and orator. He authored books like ‘The Discovery of India’ and ‘Glimpses of the World History’.

Children’s Day is celebrated all over the country with lot of joy and great enthusiasm. Many government departments, corporate institutions and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) organise various programmes, competitions and events for the children. Special television and radio programmes are aired for children on this day. For children, this is a day of joy, freedom and to engage in fun.

The history of Children’s Day reminds us that childhood is precious and despite all the new influences in a child’s life, their first innocent years are our gift to them as we protect and cherish them. The values and the strength they develop in these innocent years will form the foundation not only of their future but also that of the nation, too!

forecasting warning system (FFEWS). The system will reduce economic loss and impacts on livelihood and improve flood awareness and safety at community level.

y October 2, 2018: Mumbai’s Marine Drive gets eco-friendly public toilet at a cost of Rs 90 lakh. Designed to go with Marine Drive’s art deco architecture, the toilet has been constructed under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative by the Jindal Group and Samatech. It has been handed over to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for maintenance.

y October 3, 2018: In a first, an ancient circular lake created by a meteorite strike in Maharashtra and a hexagonal mosaic of basaltic rocks in an island off Udupi are poised to become global geoparks, under a Geological Survey of India (GSI) plan. Lonar Lake in Maharashtra and St. Mary’s Island and Malpe beach in coastal Karnataka are the GSI’s candidates for UNESCO Global Geopark Network status.

y October 8, 2018: The Indian Air Force (IAF) has launched a mobile health app named MedWatch to provide health information to the users, including first-aid and other health and nutritional topics. The app was launched on the occasion of IAF’s 85th anniversary and was conceived by the doctors of IAF and developed in-house by Directorate of Information Technology (DIT) “with Zero financial outlay”.

y October 9, 2018: Karnataka’s Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has developed an in-house app for its health inspectors and medical officers. The app will help the health department officials to levy fines on those found to be using banned plastic items.

y October 11, 2018: The Punjab government launched three android mobile applications aimed at checking crop residue burning and creating awareness about its ill-effects. Named i-Khet Machine, e-PEHaL and e-Prevent, they would help farmers access agriculture machinery, monitor tree plantation and access prompt and accurate information about incidents of crop residue burning, respectively.

y October 30, 2018: India’s first engineless, self-propelled train, the Train-18 trainset has been unveiled. It will be the first semi-high speed train to offer a comfortable inter-city ride. The swanky 16-coach prototype will travel at 160 kmph and is expected to cut travel time by 15 per cent compared to the Shatabdi Express trains, which it will eventually replace. The “Make in India” train has been manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai at the cost of Rs. 100 crore.
