°360KNOWLEDGEChristmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed on December 25 as a

religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world.

The name ‘Christmas’ comes from the Mass of Christ (or Jesus). A Mass service (which is sometimes called

Communion or Eucharist) is where Christians remember that Jesus died for us and then came back to life. The

‘Christ-Mass’ service was the only one that was allowed to take place after sunset (and before sunrise the next

day), so people had it at Midnight! So we get the name Christ-Mass, shortened to Christmas.

No one knows the real birthday of Jesus! No date is given in the Bible. The first recorded date of Christmas

being celebrated on December 25th was in 336 AD, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine (he

was the first Christian Roman Emperor). A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus

would be celebrated on the 25th December.

Jesus lived an exemplary life and taught everyone to follow the path of goodness; he taught people to believe

in the almighty and perform good deeds. The life led by Jesus is an example that must be followed by everyone

for attaining salvation and for living in harmony.

The festival of Christmas spreads the lesson of love and peace and thus unites people beyond their caste and

religion barriers. The tradition of celebrating the Christmas varies from region to region, but one thing that

remains common everywhere is the decoration of Christmas tree which symbolizes growth and harmony. It

is typically a huge fir or pine tree decorated with lights, flowers, balloons, sweets, chocolates and gifts. The

bushy trees signify the everlasting bond between their followers and Lord Jesus.

People celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm and lots of preparations and decorations. They offer

special services at the church, wear new clothes, feast, sing Christmas carols and songs and spend time with

friends and family members. Gifts and goodies are exchanged especially with

children. Small children wait for the Santa Clause loaded with gifts and

chocolates and share the same with them.
