City Commission of Lake Worth, Florida

We acquired media intervention as well as law enforcement investigation for a Genesis member scammed by a company called Solargenics.

We assisted 21 year Lake Worth resident 67 years of age with city fines and liens on her home due to a clerical error combined with a language barrier. The issue was resolved and she was able to go forward with her reverse mortgage to save her home from foreclosure.

Genesis members and Rosendo Colomar, Outreach Coordinator at Bridges Lake Worth, have scheduled a volunteer yard clean up on April 16th on 6th avenue south and F street. This was made possible thanks to Mr. Colomar who identified and conveyed the residents needs to me and Robert Waples in an email.

Ms. Ethel Harris

Commissioner Scott Maxwell, after meeting Ms. Joan Greene and Ms. Ethel Harris who attended one of his first Town Hall Utility Meetings, found out about their situation and reached out to some members of the community in his district.

Scott called Robert Waples and myself to task. We sent out an email blast to Joanna Aiken, SWA, L.W. City Hall, PBSO and local non-profit agency contacts. The first response was from Joanna Aiken and our very own PBSO District 14 Deputy Michael Donovan who called Robert Waples and I within minutes after the email went out. Deputy Donovan secured Benny’s on the Beach for a breakfast fundraiser several hours after receipt of the email blast. Thanks to John Bachman of CBS Channel 12, the response of our community and the efforts of several of our Community Policing Unit deputies, the Benny’s fundraiser was a spectacular success!

Ms. Ethel Harris continued...Thanks to Deputy Michael Mahoney his Mom and the rest of his generous family for hosting a successful Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser for Ms. Harris at “An Old Family Recipe Cafe” in Lake Worth Towers. Commissioner Maxwell, from Washington D.C., participated by donating two tickets which went to residents of Phoenix House, a residential recovery house within Genesis boundaries. Mayor Rene Varela participated as well as Commissioner Christopher McVoy who stopped by, purchased a dinner and shared a moment with Ms. Harris. Special thanks to Joel Rutsky and his team for all their assistance in the acquisition of a $3,000.00 grant from the City of Lake Worth to replace Ethel’s 40 year old air conditioning unit. This team effort has secured free roofing pledged by Storm Roofing. Free plumbing work donated and already completed by The Potty Doctor. Greg Rice of Hulett Environmental Services has pledged to tent the home to eliminate the termite infestation. Debra Morgan, Executive Director of Palm Beach Harvest has pledged to install a complete flower garden in Ms. Harris‘ yard. Home Depot will be at Ms. Harris‘ home on April 9th to install a brand new fence for her home. We invite you all to come out, if not to give a hand, than to just witness one of the reasons why some of us are so proud to live in Lake Worth it! The blessings continue to shower this ongoing project.

April 2011 - we can file for our reimbursement grant awarded last year by P.B.C. O.C.R., to recover our 501 (c) 3 application expense.

2011-2012 GoalsRequest paving of unpaved 7th, 8th, and 10th avenues south between A and B streets. This was promised to our neighborhood in a January 2010 association meeting.

Attend 2011 R.E.A.P. class and submit proposal for $2,500.00 grant to acquire decorative banners and poles to place at major points of ingress and egress identifying Genesis Neighborhood Association boundaries. The banners will showcase our 2011 logo as well as “Welcome to Genesis Neighborhood” in English, Haitian Creole and Spanish.

Acquisition of a foreclosed home, within the Genesis boundaries, to begin the process of renovation and construct the first community center to exist within the Genesis boundaries.

Politely request cooperation from our city when trying to get the word out to our neighbors about these efforts. This is stated because we were disappointed when the City Manager denied us a request to advertise these fundraisers on our city marquee as well as send out an interdepartmental email blast to all city employees.
