Simplicity and Flexibility
GE’s air-cooled generators are an ideal choice for power
system applications that demand simplicity and flexibility
of operation.
Air-cooled generators operate with either an open-loop or
a closed-loop cooling system. Under the open-loop system,
the generator draws air from the atmosphere to cool its
active components, then it exhausts the air back into the
atmosphere. Under the closed-loop system, cooling air is
recirculated continuously through the generator while
air-to-water heat exchangers remove heat from the air.

During operation, an air-cooled generator can be load cycled freely, and it is well suited to peaking duty.
Because of the absence of a pressurized atmosphere within the generator, its structural components are
simple and easy to handle, which facilitates routine maintenance.
The potential for severe corona discharge damage is a challenge to the design of air-cooled generators.
GE uses well-proven systems of insulating and voltage-grading materials to ensure freedom from damaging
corona activity.
GE air-cooled generators are fully assembled before they are shipped,
limiting on-site assembly to placement on the foundation,
alignment with the turbine and connection to balance of
plant equipment. The resulting reduction in construction
time represents a direct cost saving to the customer.

Highly Efficient and Reliable
Hydrogen’s three outstanding properties, low density, high specific heat, and thermal conductivity, make it
a superior coolant for rotating electrical machines. Hydrogen lends itself to a compact, highly efficient,
reliable design. Hydrogen gas is circulated in a closed loop within the generator to remove heat from its
active parts, then it is cooled by gas-to-water heat exchangers that are part of the stator frame. The frame
is tightly sealed to prevent gas leakage, and oil seals are installed on the shaft at each end of the stator to
prevent leakage as the shaft emerges from the stator frame.
The hydrogen-cooled generator’s interior is completely sealed
from the atmosphere, so dust, humidity, salt or chemicals have
no effect on the machine. The absence of oxygen in its cooling
gas means the generator’s high-voltage insulation system will
not be damaged by any corona activity in the generator’s stator
windings. This is a significant factor in the machine’s reliability.

Water-Cooled Generators
GE water-cooled generators are exceptionally well suited to central station applications where output
requirements exceed the cooling capabilities of air-cooled or hydrogen-cooled designs.
Cool, deionized water, supplied by a closed-loop auxiliary system, flows through hollow copper strands
located in the stator winding, then the warm water is discharged at the turbine end of the generator.
The GE water-cooled generator’s performance is heightened by optimization of its bar strand configuration,
including hollow-to-solid-strand ratio. Enhancements in stator bar insulation construction and chemistry
provide further improvements in the design of new and refurbished liquid-cooled stator windings.
Because high-output machines are so important to the overall stability of the grid, reliability is a primary
requirement for water-cooled generators. GE continues to improve their performance while maintaining
their high reliability. Stator frames are designed for low vibration using advanced finite element analysis.
Fan efficiency is improved to reduce losses and increase output. Thermal fluid-flow techniques are used
to improve the overall performance of the field winding.
GE continues to develop the technology to meet our customers’ demand for reliable, efficient,
cost-effective machines.

A power system requires a control system that integrates component functions to maximize overall perform-
ance and availability. GE’s latest generation of fully integrated control systems provide our customers with the
ability to operate a power plant on a single platform, which leads to complete system ownership.
GE’s continually evolutionary designs create the flexibility to meet all our customers’ engineering and
maintenance needs. Our control systems extend increased productivity to our customers by furnishing a
common operator interface, tools that improve efficiency and require fewer operators, peer-
to-peer communication link controllers for coordinated plant operation, simplified plant
data acquisition and performance evaluation, less spare parts, reduced training costs and
minimized forced outages.
GE’s turbine control products cover steam, gas and aeroderivative applications to give
our customers the control, efficiency and availability they’ve come to expect from a
GE product.

The changing demands of the highly competitive power generation business present a constant challenge
to generator operators. GE, a leader in generator technology, has the knowledge, resources and experience
to help our customers keep their generators in top condition to meet today’s—and tomorrow’s—challenges.
GE’s Generator Reliability Program offers proactive fleet monitoring and diagnostics to help prevent problems,
which, in turn, will minimize total cost of ownership. The program will help improve fleet reliability and availability,
cut future maintenance and repair costs, and extend inspection intervals. Incorporating an entire generator fleet
into the program allows a full scope of services to meet operational needs. Under the program, a team of
specialists will evaluate a generator fleet and assess its requirements. They will develop a customized, fleetwide
maintenance plan designed to reduce operating costs and increase fleet availability. GE’s Generator Reliability
Program presents a full scope of services to meet our customers’ operational needs.
