The registration process has begun and students will soon be completing their applications for the 2015/16 school year. Our grade nine students have had the opportunity to hear about and tour several of our local High Schools. There are many opportunities available for our students so it is important that they discuss these options with you. Grade ten applications for next year are available in the Guidance Office and are due back a.s.a.p. Our grade seven and eight students will also be bringing home their applications this week. It is our belief that students should have many different opportunities to explore their interests and talents within the school setting. We are very fortunate at General Wolfe to have an outstanding academic program, as well as talented teachers who are able to offer a variety of optional courses for our students. These optional courses fill up very quickly and are assigned on a first-come-first enrolled basis. Therefore, it is important to hand applications in early. Marso 2015

.

Wazazi / Walezi,

FOR DRIVERS

Flashing yellow lights on the school bus mean the bus is getting ready to stop and load or un-load. You need to slow down and get ready to stop.

Flashing red lights mean the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off. It is illegal to pass a school bus from either direction once it’s stopped and has its lights activated unless there is a physical barrier (such as a median) between your vehicle and the bus.

As soon as the bus driver turns on the flashing red lights, drivers coming from both directions must immediately stop at least five metres from the bus and remain stopped until the lights stop flashing, the STOP arm folds away and the bus begins to move.

Be extremely cautious around school buses and remember young children are nearby and move quickly.

FOR PARENTS

Educate your children about bus safety etiquette:

• Teach them to stay away from the three dan-ger zones – the front, sides and back of the bus by staying at least three meters away from the school bus.

• If children must cross the street, they must never cross behind the school bus, they should seek the driver’s permission, take five giant steps past the front of the bus and make sure the driver has seen them before crossing.

• Teach them to be watch for other traffic be-fore crossing the road.

• If children drop something near or under the school bus, they should never attempt to re-trieve it without the driver’s permission.

• Ensure that they get to the bus stop at least five minutes before the school bus arrives.

• Teach them to never run after the school bus if they arrive late at the bus stop.

• Teach them to take five giant steps away from the road when the school bus is ap-proaching.

Cold Weather Guidelines

:

The following media outlets are contacted in the early morning to ask that they broadcast and/or post bus cancellation information:

During the school day if it becomes necessary because of severe weather con-ditions for a school to be closed, or to bus the students home early, the school will be contacted by telephone by a representative from the Superintendent’s Department. It is the responsibility of the principal to inform all staff in the build-ing and those off-site where applicable, and to make arrangements to advise parents.

There are days when school bus transportation my be cancelled, but the schools and the administration buildings will remain open. In addition, Metro Winnipeg School Divisions have adopted –45 F by 6:15 am (with Wind Chill) based on the Environment Canada readings at The Forks, as being the critical temperature at which buses will not run, but school will remain open. When bus transportation is cancelled in the morning, it will not resume later in the day even if weather conditions improve.
