I am so excited to welcome you to Mississippi College this fall! There are a lot of great things about being a Choctaw, but one of the best opportunities you will have while attending MC is getting involved with one of our social organizations! We have four women’s social tribes and five men’s service organizations that make up our social family here at MC. Each has its own unique personality and interest just like you! Because each group is so diverse I am confident that you will find a home within one of the clubs or tribes!

What sets MC’s clubs and tribes apart from other schools’ Greek life systems is that our group’s sole purpose is to glorify the Kingdom of God through discipleship, serving each other, and just experiencing life together. Don’t get me wrong -- our clubs and tribes have a lot of fun along the way with swaps and socials, formals and informals, date parties, and competing in things like Follies, Swerve, and Derby Week each year. But our main focus is on growing with each other and Christ along the way.

The best way to find out about these groups is to participate in General Rush which kicks off with Rush Fair on September 9th on the Quad. I encourage you to come out and meet some of the greatest students on MC’s campus. The best way to make the most out of your four years on campus is to GET INVOLVED! Clubs and tribes are a great way to start, so get excited and meet people!

Welcome to campus! I can’t wait to see what you do to make MC awesome!

There are four women’s social tribes and five men’s service organizations on Mississippi College’s campus. The Council consists of four representatives from each of these organizations. The Council coordinates, monitors, and helps govern over these clubs and tribes.

The purpose of the Council is to be a unified body whose goal is to support one another in order to provide an authentic and welcoming atmosphere that allows for the clubs and tribes to disciple their members to the glory of God in the community of Mississippi College for generations to come.

I remember my first few weeks at Mississippi College when I heard the saying, “Do it like a Choctaw.” Since that

time, I can not even begin to count the number of times I have heard that saying, and I have often wondered what it meant to be and

act like a Choctaw. As I gear up for my senior year here at MC, I think that I have finally grasped what it means to be a Choctaw.

Your time at Mississippi College will seem to fly by, and while you are here you will have the opportunity to be involved in clubs and tribes. These social organizations can provide you not only with the chance to serve the local community, but also as a way to connect with your peers and build relationships that will last throughout your years here at MC.

There is no doubt that clubs and tribes have amazing swaps, formals, and other social functions, but these organizations are about much more than a great social event. Clubs and tribes provide students with a community to support them through their time at MC. Being involved in a tribe allowed me to meet girls who would disciple me and walk with me throughout my college experience. Now that I am approaching my last months at this amazing school, I see the importance of clubs and tribes and the discipleship that they provide. The past three years at MC have shown me that becoming a true Choctaw is about much more than wearing blue and gold, it is about being a part of a family and being a part of something bigger than yourself. Clubs and tribes show you what it means to be a part of the Choctaw family. If you chose to become involved in social organizations, there is no doubt that you will have a blast at swaps, but you will also be encouraged spiritually throughout your college journey.

Of course there are a multitude of ways to get involved on campus and meet new people, but I encourage you to pray about participating in General Rush! I know that at times clubs and tribes may seem confusing but there is no need to rush into a decision about whether or not you will be partaking in General Rush, but if you have any questions do not hesitate to contact Brock or myself.

You’re all moved in and reading this book wondering, “What are Clubs and Tribes?” Well I can sympathize with you because I was in your shoes last year and I remember looking at a rush booklet very similar to the one you’re reading from right now. What are Clubs and Tribes? Well I’d go so far as to say they are the single most influential organizations on campus. They offer an outlet for a diverse population by providing discipleship, brotherhood (and sisterhood), and fun environment in which one can thrive! Many of my favorite freshman memories were during Rush and at the swaps, formals, and informals I attended. Even more so, I found fellowship with brothers and a Christ-like community!

I hope each and every one of you make the decision to rush! Believe me you have nothing to lose but so much to gain from so many people willing to pour into your life through the whole process. I pray I see you all in an active jersey one day! Feel free to talk to me if you ever need anything!

Welcome To mc! You maDe iT!

social life

Clubs and tribes strive to serve not only Mississippi College, but also our local and national communities. Each club and tribe has a philanthropy they serve alongside throughout the year. The Council will offer a service opportunity for all clubs and tribes to participate in together during the pledging process.

Leadership is encouraged for members both inside and outside of the clubs and tribes. Members of clubs and tribes can be seen in leadership positions across campus such as Student Government Association, campus ministries, athletic teams and honor societies.

MC seeks to be known as a university recognized for academic excellence and commitmentto the cause of Christ. Clubs and tribes seek to give glory to the Lord by continuing on with the Christian values of MC. Each club and tribe has a chaplain who provides opportunities to grow and be spiritually encouraged.

Clubs and tribes have numerous events and activities which promote and build unity within their organization. Clubs and tribes offer an opportunity to build friendships and community which will last a lifetime!

Welcome To chocTaW naTion! hello mc’s neWesT aDDiTions! We are beyond thrilled that the Lord has placed you at MC, and He is going

to shape you even more into the person He wants you to become. You are about to embark on an unforgettable journey, one that will be life changing. One of the most exciting experiences is RUSH. Whether you’re a freshman or transfer, this is a wonderful way to get involved and grow in your walk with Christ and serve. I cannot believe three years ago I was sitting where you are now. I felt excited, nervous and anxious about RUSH, but now I have the honor of being President of the tribe I love! I had no idea what sisterhood would do in my life and how many memories I created until I RUSHED. During RUSH, you will meet tons of girls who become your life-long friends and even your sisters, who are there to build you up! You go through experiences together that strengthen you and learn selflessness. From Follies to tailgates and other RUSH events, tradition is created. Going through General Rush is such an amazing experience and we highly encourage you to partake in it because you will not regret it! We want you to know that we have been praying for you and will continue to. Wherever God places you, it is for a purpose, so get excited! At MC, being involved in Kissimee has been such a blessing in my life and my faith has been sharpened so much. I have witnessed the true meaning of sisterhood. During Rush, I encourage you to have an open mind and take chances. Get to know people and make the most of every moment. We are so excited that you are here and want to help you in any way possible. Kissimee is all about love, grace and especially sisterhood. We strive to glorify God in everything we do and use our spiritual gifts to the fullest. We seek to show others Christ in us before ourselves as well as the true beauty of women. As our motto states, “To be Beautiful, rather then seem beautiful”. We pray that you will trust the Lord in this process and that when you are weary to look for Him for your strength. Enjoy Rush and cease every opportunity!

“Your beauty should not come from outward adornment such as elaborate hairstyles and the wearing of gold jewelry or fine clothes. Rather it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight” 1 Peter 3:3-4

Congratulations! You’ve made it to move in day! First things first, on behalf of Laguna, Welcome to Mississippi College! I am confident that this new season of life will be one of the best. The fall season at MC is filled with many great events and activities, my favorite being the Rush Process! It’s a period where you get to spend time with each tribe or club and find a group of people you can see yourself growing with during your college career.

My name is Hannah Terry, and I am Laguna Social Tribe’s President. I am so excited to meet this new class and see how you make an impact on our campus! Freshmen year was the time of my life, so I can’t wait for you all to experience Mississippi College in all its glory! I highly encourage you all to attend all of the Welcome Week activities and make the best of your time here. A great way to meet new people is to partake in General Rush, even if you don’t think tribes and clubs are for you. Rush is a great way to meet great people and open yourself up to different and new experiences. I met some of my best friends during that time, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world! The general rush process is something you will want to invest your time in. It won’t be long until you have to start attending classes so have fun during the first week of your college career, and make the decision to RUSH! Freshman year goes by fast, so don’t take any moment for granted!

I look forward to meeting you during the Rush events! I hope that you enjoyed move in day and didn’t have to lift a finger! Please feel free to contact me or talk to me if you have any questions about Laguna or the rush process! I would love to hear from you! For more information about Laguna, check out our Facebook page! hello mc laDies, hello laDies!Y’all are finally here! Deciding to come to MC is one of the

most rewarding decisions you could have made, but rushing is one of the best MC decisions you will make in your years here! Please know that lots of students here are praying for you and the decision you will make. The friends you meet and make now will forever impact your life. I believe that rushing a tribe helps you make those friendships. Tribes are one of the most fabulous things MC offers. Whichever tribe you pledge, you will grow, be mentored, and find your sisterhood. All the girls of Nenamoosha cannot wait to get to know you. Our sisterhood is very diverse and each girl brings something to NT that we value. We truly want to do life together as a tribe and grow together in Christ’s love! Nenamoosha is praying for you!

On behalf of Swannanoa, I would like to officially welcome you to Mississippi College! We are so glad that you are here! I have honestly been praying for you over the past months. My time at MC has been greatly impacted by the different activities on campus, but mostly by being part of a tribe. Soon, you will have the opportunity to go through rush. Rush is a time where you create new relationships, have fun, and most importantly grow closer to Christ. I honestly believe that if you decide to go through rush, you won’t regret it! Swannanoa’s motto is, “To serve rather than be served.” We believe through service we create a bond of sisterhood that is not easily broken. We want to be a source of encouragement to you along the way, regardless of what you decide to rush. We love you and can’t wait for you to be a part of the family at MC!

Dear neW sTuDenTs,Dear neW sTuDenTs,

KrisTian gauTier ciViTan presiDenT, 2014-2015

As president of Circle K, I would personally like to welcome you to Mississippi College. As this is my third year here, I can say that this institution provides a solid education and caters to a unique personal experience. My name is Andrew Glass and I am a Finance and Accounting major, as well as a soldier in the United States Army National Guard. I would like to take a few minutes of your time to tell you a little about who Circle K is.

Circle K is the longest standing Men’s Service/Social Club on the campus of Mississippi College. Founded in the 1953-1954 school year, Circle K has a very rich history of successful members and alumni. Our purpose and objective is to provide an environment in which a Circle K man can be inspired to seek the best in their chosen lines of study as well as in life, so that they may have a satisfying and useful role in society. One of the biggest things that separates us from the other clubs is that we welcome people for who they are and there is not really a “stereotype” among Circle K actives. We believe that the Lord created you in His image. That being said, members of Circle K are truly just a group of guys who are down to earth, genuine, supportive, and friendly people. We strive to maintain and create a strong, close-knit brotherhood, honoring tradition, and actively pursuing service to humanity and promoting academic excellence. Circle K is a highly dynamic collaboration of men that changes every semester; however, the ideals which we were founded upon always stay the same: Commitment, Service, and Brotherhood.

I hope that as you start this new adventure in your life that some refer to as “college,” you would consider the possibility of allowing Circle K to walk alongside you.

My name is Kristian Gautier, and I’m president of Civitan Men’s Club. I know you’ve probably heard this already, but welcome! I’m so excited to see all of these new faces on MC’s campus, and I just want to say, this is it! You’ve finally arrived. The memories, friends, and experiences you’ll have here are going to be the ones you cherish for a lifetime.

It’s crazy to think of how fast college has flown by, since I was in your very place two years ago. Take advantage of these next four years and get involved as much as possible. It flies by! I feel like the best way to get involved at MC is by rushing. Rushing will not only allow room for personal growth, but will also give an opportunity to meet new people and experience new things. Rushing Civitan Men’s Club was the single best decision I’ve made here during my time at MC. Civitan was founded in 1949, and has always encouraged its members to strive for social involvement, spiritual growth, and excellence. Civitan has three important things we stand for: Service, Brotherhood, and Character. Not only does Civitan have some awesome date parties, swaps, and an occasional formal in New Orleans, we share a brotherhood that focuses on serving Christ, serving our communities, and serving each other.

Our prayer for you is that you will take this opportunity and run with it; allowing the Lord to use you in new ways and experience the connectedness with a group of guys that will be there with you through thick and thin.

Please don’t hesitate to ask me any questions about the rush process or Civitan in general. I’m excited to meet each of you, and I hope Civitan will be a part of your experience here at Mississippi College! Happy rushing!

Welcome To chocTaW naTion!Welcome, men of mc.

Ken DelaughTer roToracT presiDenT, 2014-2015

You are about to have the opportunity to embark on a process that could change your college journey. College is the time in your life where you are truly independent and responsible for your own decisions. Rushing a Men’s Service Club gives you a unique opportunity to create relationships on campus. With great pleasure we invite you to rush Kokoa, the newest club on campus.

“Kokoa” is the Choctaw word that translates “to be broken”: this means as a club we realize we are inadequate if we lean on our own understanding, but our ambition is to provide and be a brotherhood whose central focus is Christ. Furthermore our brokenness compels us to be servants to our brothers, our campus, and our community.

We know that no matter what, God is in control and He will put you where you need to be. Thanks for your time and can’t wait to see you.

Proverbs 27:17 – “As iron sharpens iron, so does one man sharpen another.”

It’s over, the visits, the orientations, and parental supervision. You are about to start the best years of your life. You will make lifelong friends and memories.

Rotaract Men’s Service Club was formed in 1987 and will be celebrating 27 years. We are the third oldest club on campus and strive to provide an authentic and transparent picture of what brotherhood is. Collectively we value the individuality of our members an acceptance of members, and a quality over quantity approach to club membership.

Rotaract has been one of the most developmental parts of my college career. I have made my best friends and even met my girlfriend through a club function. We have several different functions such as formal, informal, swaps, and service projects. If you are interested in a brotherhood, that will last longer than your college years, then come hang out with us.

Do it like a Choctaw. We actually have a Choctaw.Side note: Thomas Tubby is a real Choctaw for you.

Congratulations, you’ve just begun the rest of your life! And you’re in luck: MC is a place where you can maximize your potential and make the most of every day you’ve been given. One of the best way s to be involved on campus is through the rush process! Rush is your doorstep, your threshold, to growth; to development; to discipleship.

On behalf of my brothers in Shawreth, I want to tell you just how excited we are that you’ve chosen MC as your home. Seriously, we’re pumped. Shawreth is a Men’s Service Club that was founded in 1998 upon three tenets: Devotion, Perseverance, Excellence. Our name comes from the Hebrew word for “servant” or “minister” and is used to describe Joshua’s relationship to Moses in Joshua 1:1. The word carries with it a sense of holiness, of being set apart, for a purpose.

My desire for you is that whatever you do and wherever you go, you would fix your heart and mind continually on the Father.

“For a day in Your courts is better than a thousand outside. I would rather stand at the threshold of the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.” (Psalm 84:10)

The purpose of Clubs and Tribes is to create and maintain a positive social environment at Mississippi College. Accordingly, all Mississippi College organizations should fully support the Hazing Policy of the University. In keeping with its commitment to maintaining a positive social environment at MC, and in accordance with Mississippi State Law, Clubs and Tribes should unconditionally oppose any hazing.

The Mississippi College Tomahawk defines hazing as an act which threatens the mental or physical health or safety of a student, causes embarrassment or humiliation, or which destroys or removes public or private property, for the purpose of initiation, admission into, affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership in a group or organization, a student’s willingness to participate in such activity not withstanding (See Student Conduct Code).

Mississippi College further defines hazing as any willful act done by one or more individuals belonging to a Tribe or Club, whether physical, mental, emotional or psychological, which subjects another person, voluntarily or involuntarily, to anything that may abuse, mistreat, degrade, humiliate, harass, ridicule, intimidate, or endanger him or her, or which may in any fashion compromise his or her inherent dignity as a person.

The following are some general examples of activities which are generally considered hazing (This list is meant to serve only as a resource and DOES NOT list every activity considered hazing):

• The application of food items or any other substances to an individual’s body or property

• Coerced* or forced carrying or wearing of any items that causes embarrassment or humiliation

• Coerced or forced wearing of costumes or particular clothing that causes embarrassment or humiliation

• Any kind of physical exercise

• Coerced or forced consumption of food, drink, alcohol, tobacco, and/or illegal drugs

• Coerced or forced transporting of individuals• Activities that include humiliation, ridicule, indecent exposure or threaten social

exclusion• Coercing or forcing illegal acts• Coercing or forcing acts that are immoral and/or unethical*(see section W)• Activities that negatively impact an individual’s academic, social, physical, or

personal success • Personal servitude • Mental harassment and/or sexual harassment• Deception that causes embarrassment, humiliation or that threatens an individual’s

physical and/or mental wellbeing • Any activity that involves the use of alcohol or any controlled substance in

accordance with Mississippi College’s Alcohol and Drug Policy• Any activity that is not in accordance with Mississippi College’s established

policies

Note that it is the responsibility of ALL members of an organization to ensure that hazing is not taking place. Anyone who is aware of hazing should alert Student Life staff immediately. Should hazing occur in connection with any group or individual activity, disciplinary action will be taken.

*Section W-Conduct which adversely affects the student’s suitability as a member of the University community or reflects negatively on the institution and the principles ascribed

*Definition of Coerce (according to Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary)1. To restrain or dominate by force 2. To compel to an act or choice 3. To achieve by force or threat
