A. INFORMATION ABOUT PURPAN AND ITS ENVIRONNMENT

The school of Agriculture:

The Ecole d’Ingénieurs de Purpan, a Jesuit private college founded in 1919, has maintained a spirit of direct collaboration with the agricultural environment.

It is administrered by a non-profit making council and depends on the Ministry of Agriculture. It awards the degree of “Ingénieur en Agriculture” which is equivalent to a MSc in Agriculture. Students are admitted after the French “Baccalauréat”, or directly into 2

nd or 3

rd year (after a two-or-three-year university degree:

direct entrants).

PURPAN curriculum is based on 3 key principles: intensive academic studies, on-the-job experience, strong international exposure. This five-year programme trains future graduates for top positions in a wide range of professional fields.

There are about 1,000 students at PURPAN and more than 60 lecturers and researchers (permanent or part-time lecturers from industry, research institutes and other Universities).

is also the 2nd

largest university town in France, the 1st European city for

aeronautical activities and a high-tech centre. Located in France’s most important agricultural region, Toulouse also remains attached to its traditions.

There is plenty to do downtown. With more than 95,000 students, Toulouse is one of the liveliest cities in France. Toulouse’s cultural mosaic enlivens the region’s various entertainment activities, and gives a southern European tone to its night-life. It offers at the same time exciting prospects and an easy way of life that attracts many people.

At the crossroads of Europe, Toulouse is only 6 hours from Madrid, 4 hours from Barcelona, and 2 hours from many European countries such as Italy, Austria, Switzerland, etc. The city is also at the crossroads of the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenean Mountains.

3. Useful information regarding the programmes

Courses: you may choose among the courses of the “Ingénieur” curriculum, on the condition that you have the prerequisites needed (we will check this matter with you).

Normally, exchange students choose courses from 3rd

and 4th year mainly, and

sometimes from 2nd

year. 1st year courses are generally too basic.

Access to 5th year courses is possible but restricted, please contact Sarah PRINCE

if you need more information.

Some courses are taught in English at PURPAN: EURAMA = “European Animal Management” AREM = “Agricultural Resources and Environmental Management”. Please contact Delphine SEGUI, if you need more information.

4. Linguistic knowledge (prerequisite, preliminary French lessons, level tests)

At PURPAN, the language of tuition is French for most of the courses. Consequently, we ask exchange students to reach a level B1 in French at least (according to the CEFRL: Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) to be able to attend courses. Level B2 is recommended though. For more information about the levels, please refer to : http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/en/resources/european-language-levels-cefr

A module of French as a Foreign Language is offered at the beginning of each semester (30 hours in group).

In addition, you might also want to sign up for French courses within the framework of the PRES "Université de Toulouse" (40€ per module). Please contact Delphine SEGUI for more information: subscription according to calendar and places (modules of 15 to 30 hours).

For EURAMA & AREM courses, we ask students to reach a sufficient English level (= TOEIC score 750 or equivalent).

5. Best time for study exchange

Best time to arrive:

- to attend courses in French: from January to June (Semester II) because we have much more courses offered than from October (Semester I). Indeed, 4

th & 5

th year courses start back from January only.

- for placements within Laboratories: from September (but you must check with Sarah PRINCE if a placement is possible beforehand). No courses and placements available for August.

E. ACCOMMODATION

There is no student hall on PURPAN campus. However we can help you finding flats to share, rooms in French families, or in Residences near PURPAN, if you ask us and according to our possibilities.

For students arriving in September or October, we sometimes have temporary solutions at first, but we always try to provide students with a lodging solution for the entire period of their stay according to our possibilites, unless they want to deal with this by themselves. Contact: Delphine SEGUI.

The first month, one has usually to pay a one-month rent security deposit, on top of the rent. If you have to pay it, don’t worry you will get it back at the end of your stay, unless you cause damage. One has to warn the owner 1 month in advance before departure (=“Préavis”), generally by sending a letter by recorded delivery to the owner. You may obtain a state allowance for lodging, but depending on the conditions it is not always the case (for EU students, usually yes; for other students, generally for stays superior to 6 months). The procedure requires a certain amount of papers (Birth certificate translated into French & certified by an official translator, marriage certificate, income certificate, rent contract, rent receipt, copy of your French student card, bank account details, certificate concerning your status in France –carte de séjour– etc…). More information can be obtained upon your arrival from the “Caisse d’allocations familiales” (http://www.caf.fr), rue Riquet, Toulouse. Tél. +33(0)5 61 99 77 00.
