It’s often difficult in today’s Denton to imagine a home-grown business so influential it employs over 1,000 people and even runs adverts in the Radio Times.

You would be forgiven

for assuming the business manufactured solely batteries. However, “Oldham’s” was founded upon providing mechanical machinery to the mining and cotton industries not only within Denton, but globally.

1865- Joseph Oldham began his work in piston manufacture. 1878- Joseph partnered up with son, Orlando. 1888- Ten people now employed. 1910- Oldham Batteries expanded into mining industry technologies. 1921- Became a Private Limited Company. 1921- Company’s first venture into production of car, locomotive and aircraft batteries. 1965- “Oldham’s” celebrated their centenary with factories in; France, India, Africa and Australia. 1970- Oldham Batteries merged with Carlton Industries- ending the Oldham family’s connection with the company. 2002- Factory site demolished.

After placing exceptional financial strain on the business, the “Oldham Lamp” won Home Office approval and a staggering 150,000 were in use in British pits. By the 20th century Denton’s Oldham Batteries had become a nationally renowned name.

In 1865 local entrepreneur Joseph Oldham started work in a humble workshop close to St. Laurence’s Church, at which time his firm was principally concerned with the manufacture of pistons. Joseph and his son Orlando, who can both be seen in the photograph above (1882), joined forces in 1878 and the business evolved into the design, construction and maintenance of hatting as well as colliery machinery. This huge financial gamble accompanied by astute business acumen transformed the fledgling business into one which sold to a global market. Involvement with the

shows Oldham Batteries at the very pinnacle of prosperity. The photograph at the very bottom of this page shows Oldham’s vast administrative team- highlighting the vast scale of the business. Note it’s wholly female composition and its single male supervisor. Quite incredibly, by 1965 and the centenary anniversary of the company, Oldham Batteries had established factories in France, India, Africa and Australia; a staggering feat. The decline of Oldham Batteries came in the 1970s. Managing director Orlando Oldham proposed a merger with another U.K. battery manufacturer in the decade, however the company was taken over by Carlton Industries and for the past thirty years they controlled the business. In 2002, due to a national decline in secondary industries, Oldham Batteries was demolished. The future of the site is a proposed additional Retail Park. After overcoming significant legal opposition in 2007, Tameside Council intend the development to bring “tremendous benefits to the people of Denton and beyond.” In addition to Crown Point North, the plans will bring “even more top high street names as well as employment opportunities” to the heart of Denton.
