This book has been a source of valuable genealogical information since my Dad gave me a copy a number of years ago. As it was never formally published and only twenty eight copies were produced, I decided to make this information more widely available to the public by creating this edited and digitized edition. The original information was a little hard to follow, so I have restructured it in a manner that makes the flow of families much easier to discern. The original format has been retained, but each descendant of the three families is assigned a number which makes it easier to find where they are listed as a child and where they are listed as a parent. Some changes have been made to correct logical inconsistencies.

This book was written before the internet was available. Much more information on these families can probably be found. For the on-line edition, I have included the vital statistics only for persons who have been born in the last seventy-two years which is the census standard, unless their deaths have been documented. As future editions are released, I will include this information as well as the results of additional research. Information added by myself will be italicized.

Library, Carroll County, Missouri marriages (1833-1852) Haziel McKinley, by Elijah Jeffries. Putnam Co, Missouri Atlas (1877) Quintas McKinley settled 1850. He, and D. P. Arsissa each wed in Putnam Co. The James McKinley family appears to have migrated from Kentucky to Missouri about 1850.

Russell Co. Kentucky advised that James McKinley operated a ferry there on the Cumberland River in 1837. Also Anderson Jeffries (Richard Anderson Jeffries) wed Harriet McKinley there. The marriage bond could not be found.

Richard Anderson Jeffries’ time and places of residence are elusive. Except of his military service there are not records of where he lived after his marriage until 1870 census of Bates Co. Missouri. Thereafter he lived in various places in Missouri except for a short time in the state of Washington.

To this date the parents and ancestors of Joseph Price have completely evaded each and every source of inquiry and investigation. Genealogist Smith still searching.

Genealogist Smith says discrepancies in the records of ancestors is not uncommon.When the research was completed a printer examined it for the purpose of publishing a book.

He advises that a book is quite expensive and that typed and copied pages in a binder are much better. I have over 2400 sheets prepared in 28 binders to be mailed.

CHAPTER ONE: THE JAMES McKINLEY FAMILY

Michael McKinley and a younger brother (not Named) when boys secreted themselves in a vessel and left Scotland unknown to their parents for America. Michael joined the army and was with Washington through the Revolution, with General Jackson at New Orelans and lost his life there Jan 30, 1815. Michael had sons Solomon, James, and Peter: daughter Elizabeth: wife Sarah Fout.

CHAPTER TWO: RICHARD ANDERSON JEFFRIES - BACKGROUND Springfield, Kentucky 40069 October 21, 1966Mr. C. E. Jeffries417 West Park StreetLivingston, Montana, 59047Dear Mr. Jeffries:I am so sorry so many things have kept me from finishing the material I started for you on the families you want researched here. I think you will agree the search has been fairly successful. There seemed no way to prove here what I thought to be the family lines.Early in the summer, Mrs. Berley from Greensburg, a Kentucky Highway researcher checking deeds for the state, came to Springfield, and I met her. I asked about Jeffries material in her area, and she offered to lend me a book by a deceased friend of hers who did much work on some of your families. This book was privately published - just a few copies - after the death of the lady who did the work but did not live to complete it. Her family finished it. I have copied the chapters referring to your ancestors, JEFFRIES & Pettits.There is also a descendant of Elijah Jett and Rhoda Gordon, who has done some research. I have copied what she has, and it is some facts and some traditions. She sent data on the Owens family. I had not known that Thomas Pettit and High Gordon were brothers-in-law, having married Nathaniel Owens’ daughters. The given name “Nathaniel” appears n the Jeffries and also the Campbell families (note Thomas Pettit data). Many of the families were related neighbors in Virginia counties and doubtless came together to Kentucky. All seem to have been Baptists and were together in Bethlehem Church, formed 1805. I believe Elijah Jeffries and Joel Gordon were both ordained there.Most of the Kentucky lifetime of Anderson Jeffries was spent in Washington County, and I think he lived only a short time in Hardin after moving there. A tombstone for A. JEFFRIES is in the Gilead Churchyard in Hardin County. A friend of ours here, Shelton Jeffries, was there once searching for family clues. Shelton does not descend from Anderson Jeffries but from a Nathaniel Jeffries here, closely related, I am sure, and living in same area.You will note that only Thomas Pettit Jeffries remained in Kentucky, and he was the ancestor of the writer of the book quoted. The location of the marriages of Elijah’s children, are given; also Elijah and Elizabeth (2nd wife)’s gravesites. I am told by Shelton Jeffries that his mother sent the old Family Bible to Missouri to a relative to copy, and never got it back. But I feel sure this is not concerned with the Elijah Jeffries family.Your marriage bond and letter from the Clerk, are enclosed with this material. Also, I am sending additional forms for the families, which you may like to complete from your own information, and for your files. Hope you enjoy the data. If you want copies of documents in Washington County, I will try to arrange for these through our Clerk. Will appreciate your comments, and try to answer any question in our County. The Jeffries Family

The name “JEFFRIES” signifies “At Peace with God”.

Jeffries Coat of Arms: Sable, a lion rampant, or, between three scaling ladders.

Crest: On a mount vert, a castle with two towers.

Motto: fac recte et nil time.

The earliest Jeffries in America was Nathaniel, and his wife, who landed at Jamestown Island, 1619, from the ship “Gift of God”. He sailed from London, 1618, with a colony of two hundred fifty people that came to settle eighty thousand acres of land obtained by Richard Martin, an attorney for the London Company. The Settlement was known as Martin’s Hundred. (Ref: Earliest Immigrant’s - Hotten)A number of other Jeffries men came to American during the 17th Century and became prominent citizens,

My known Jeffries Ancestors

1. G E O R G E J E F F R I E S married S A R A H H E A D L E Y in the county of Lancaster about 1735, and moved with his infant son, Alexander Jeffries, born about 1736-1737, to what is now Fauquier Co., Virginia. He obtained from Richard Henry Lee a tract of land on the Western Slope of Watery Mountain, about two-and-one-half miles from Warrenton, Virginia. This family had lived in Prince William, King George, and Stafford Counties, Virginia.Joseph Jeffries, a brother of George, came with him and lived near George. Joseph Jeffries had several children. (Ref: Virginia Magazine. Vol. 7, p 306).

“On September 25, 1761, Capt. William Edmunds at the head of a Fauquier Co., Virginia Militia, marched to the Ohio River, to join General Clark. George Jeffries and sons, ALEXANDER and James were in Edmunds’ company. Simon Kenton who went from Fauquier Co., Virginia, opened up the western part of Kentucky to white settlers. Great numbers of Fauquier Co., people followed.”

2. A L E X A N D E R J E F F R I E S married a Miss White and settled in Fauguier Co., Virginia, where he reared his family, became a prosperous farmer at Manor Leads, Fairfax’s Domain in upper Fauquier. The Tax List of 1782 lists Alexander Jeffries and son, JAMES, and Alexander Jeffries, Jr. and Joseph Jeffries owning 10 slaves and 40 head of horses and cattle.Alexander Jeffries (appears to be a brother of George Jeffries who married Sarah Headley) was a soldier in the French and Indian War. Two of his sons served in the Revolution. After the Revolution they went to Ohio, thence to Missouri. Alexander Jeffries was a member of the Broad Run Baptist Church near Warrenton, Virgina. He was ancestor of the famous pugilist, James J. Jeffries.

(Note - there were two Alexander Jeffries. The writer’s ancestor (above) was the son of George Jeffries, above).(Note - the other Alexander Jeffries married Lettie Barton, Sep 30, 1741, Overwharton Parish Register - 1720-1760. He had sons, Eli, Reuben, George, Eliza, Stephen, John, and Moses Jeffries: three daughters, one married a Lernell, one a Weaver, and another daughter married a Lander. Information on these was from James W. Jeffries, Carbon, Indiana.)

3. J A M E S J E F F R I E S, son of my Alexander, had sons, ANDERSON JEFFRIES born 1765-1767, according to the Tax List of Fauquier County, Virginia; James Jr., born 1770-1774; Ephriam Jeffries, born 1775-1777.JAMES JEFFRIES gave patriotic service during the Revolution. He and his family remained in Fauquier Co., Virginia until 1799 (Tax Lists).4. A N D E R S O N J E F F R I E S, eldest son of James Jeffries, appears as a taxable with his father, in 1788. Next year, 1789, he is listed as head of his own household. He married Mary Gordon, daughter of Hugh and Sarah Gordon, on August 25, 1788. (Marriage Book I, page 231, Fauquier Co., Virginia). The Gordons lived in adjoining County of King George as shown by the following deed: King George Co., Virginia, Deed Book 7, p 201, Dec 6, 1787, Deed recorded June 5, 1788.

Also - Public Claim Certificate for furnishing provision for the Army - at Court held for King George County on April 4, 1782. High Gordon received pay for 350 pounds of beef taken for Public Use. Fauquier Co. formed 759 from Prince William, and Prince William from King George, 1730 - 1731. Stafford formed 1664.ANDERSON JEFFRIES disappears from Fauquier County Tax Lists by 1776. With his wife, and High Gordon family, he removed to Mercer County, Kentucky. There were other Jeffries families in Mercer County early but relationships not known. Mathew Jeffries left will in Book I, p 63, 1788, wife Isobel; sons - William and John to have certain properties when they came of age, and daughter, Agnes Hingston, Other names there: Henry, Thomas, William. Moses was in Nelson Co., Kentucky.Will of Thomas Jeffries is in Jessamine Co., 1834; Heirs, Mary Ann (Polly) Johnson; Children, Nelson, Sally, George, William, Enoch, Joseph, Eliza, Thomas Jr., Lydia, and John. Absolom and Ann Hunt. Thomas was married twice. One wife was named Polly Dickerson.A Henry Jeffries married Margret Chanbers, Fauquier Co, Virginia.William Jeffries married Nancy Smith, Aug 20, 1786 in Mercer Co., Kentucky. She was a daughter of Rev. James Smith, Baptist Minister who went to Illinois Territory and was captured by Indians. Was held captive for two years, then ransomed by his son by giving the Indians a horse and Gold watch. William Jeffries was a Revolutionary War soldier, and a pensioner in Garrard Co., Kentucky, and had his pension transferred in 1838 to Marion Co., Missouri, and was living in home of his son, presumably, James W. Jeffries, 1841.Known children of William and Nancy Smith Jeffries:

4. ANDERSON JEFFRIES and family moved to Hardin Co., Kentucky. See that County, Deed Book M, p 358, Jan 14 1832. Eliza Ann was the 6th child of Lucy Pettit and Elijah, and was three week old when her mother died. A neighbor Mrs. Marshall and her daughter Elizabeth took Eliza Ann and her sister Lucy Jane to raise after Lucy’s death, but within three months Elijah had married Elizabeth Marshall, and took the little girls back home with him and his bride.James Rudd Jeffries married Martha Marshall, sister of Elizabeth, his father’s 2nd wife, and had four children; went to the Civil War, never came home to his family; married again in California, and had at least one daughter Ethel, several children. Eddleman - I wonder about Elijah born at Jamestown, Virginia, certainly not the original Jamestown, and if in 1799, possibly in Kentucky. He probably preached in Jamestown, Kentucky - Russell Co. only two counties away from Lincoln, and next to Pulashi, where one notation places him preaching.)

Thomas Pettit Jeffries remained in Kentucky. Born near village of Texas, Washington Co., Kentucky. Went to Russell County, Kentucky, farmed a few years, logged on Cumberland river, met Mary Ann Nelson. He secured marriage license in Nelson Co., Kentucky, married in Russell Co., by his father, Elijah Jeffries who sent the return to Russell Co., Clerk’s office. They bought a large farm on Russell Creek in Adair Co. She died 1899, he in 1902, burried in family plot on that old farm.

Davis of Lexington, Kentucky, a descendant of NOAH GORDON, a brother of Rhody. Sarah Owen was probably much older than Rebecca”. From Clyde Gordon’s letter......“Also in Fauguier County, Virginia, records are Jeremiah Owen and wife Jane. His wife was probated Aug 23, 1773; and a Joshua Owens and wife AMELIA (Kenton) sister of Simon Kenton, well known pioneer and Indian fighter.I do not know how these Owens are related to NATHANIEL OWENS, Sr. Nathaniel Owens, Jr. was a brother of SARAH OWENS who married Hugh Gordon. I think there was another family of Gordons not related to ours in Virginia and must have come to about the same region of Kentucky about the same time. Old Elijah Gordon came to Missouri and is buried in Polk County, and my grandfather was 25-30 years old before Elijah died, so he knew a lot about the family. It was handed down about Hugh coming over, worked his way on a freighter, and that there was another one here.My Aunt, died 1949, told about the area, IVOR, a county, town or some area in Scotland, but I have not found a map to see if there is or was such a place. It is said to be about 100 miles north of Glascow, Scotland. The older Gordons have used the “en” speeling as Gorden, but most others write it Gordon, unless told otherwise.There are records of Owens at Greensburg, Green Co., Kentucky and some of the Gordons also. I think Nathaniel Owens, Jr. is buried at Greensburg. The first sheriff of Green Co., was Nath Owens, a farmer of good education for the times, acquired considerable wealth. He bestowed great attention to the education of his children, sent them from home to the best schools, and he was among the earliest pioneers of Green County. He acted for a time as Justice of Peace and also Judge of Court, previous to 1801. He died about 1846 on Little Bush Creek, 80 years old, and is buried there”.(Part of this, you see, is hearsay, but since it might come in handy will just copy most of the Clyde Gordon letter...).“Have heard that Hugh came over when 12-15 years old from Scotland and that his father’s name was also Hugh. He settled on the James River in Virginia, was in Fauquier County, and then King George County; married Sarah Owens in King George Co., and moved to Kentucky around 1788-1790. My ancestor was Elijah born 1788 in Virginia. This Elijah Gorden is buried in the Gorden Cemetery 5 or 6 miles south east of Halfway, Missouri. Noah Gorden, an older brother, is buried 1 1/2 miles south west of Bolivar, Missouri. Joel Gorden’s name shows up here in Missouri, but not sure if he is Elijah & Rhody’s brother.High is supposed to have had 12 children and I have only 10, an not all of their births.

Rhoda married a Jett; Sallie wed a Whitman; Molly (nickname for Mary) wed a Jeffriees Frances: Noah married Nancy Bartlett, born 5-8-1799-died 1865; William; Joel was born 6-17-1783; Elijah born 8-29-1788-died 2-20-1862, married Statia Ann Gootee. He was my Gr-Grandfather. Connecting Hugh as 1st generation in this county, I am then #6 born 5-19-1897. Elijah, Samuel, Joseph H., William Henry, and me.

MY PETTIT FAMILY

The PETTIT family is a very old Norman family recorded at Meaux, in Normandy as early as 650. They were known as the Pettits of the Mills and the Pettits of the Moors. Some were manufacturers, others were farmers. When William the Conqueror invaded England, many of the Pettits joined his army. He burned his vessels to prevent their return to Normandy, therefore the Pettits remained in England where they became prosperous. Many were knighted and several married into Royalty.

Heavy taxes were imposed upon the people of England which the Pettits bitterly resented. They believed in freedom from unjust taxes, personal liberty, and freedom to worship according to the dictates of their own consciences. For that reason Thomas Pettit joined John Winthrope and sailed to New England.

Thomas Pettit was born at Wedford, England, about 1610, sailed in the ship “Talbot” which left England in Mary, 1630. It was at sea for three months. landed at Charlestown, now Cambridge, Massachussetts, on July 2, 1630. The parentage of Thomas Pettit has not been proven.

Thomas Pettit married 1st, Christian - sometimes recorded as Catherine - Mellowes, in Essex County, England, in November, 1629, the daughter of Abraham Mallowes and Martha Bulkeley. Christian Mellowes was born about 1610-1611. Her mother Martha Bulkeley, descended from King Edward I, and Knights of the Garter,, and from the Eight Securities for the Magna Charta of 1215. John Pettit, brother of Thomas Pettit, and Oliver Mellowes, brother of Christian who married Marie James, the daughter of the Rev. John James, sailed with Thomas and Christian Pettit to America. The famous Ann Pettit Hutchison may have come long with them. There were seventeen vessels in the Winthrope Fleet which brought one thousand Puritans and Non-Comformists of the Church of England, to their new home. Many brought their cows, horses, goats and seeds for planting.

Thomas Pettit was a Non-Conformist, and got arrested because of his stand against the Massachusetts Bay Colony, but was released without punishment, went to the Falls of the Piscatagua, in New Hampshire, and founded the town of Exeter. He helped establish the Congregational Church there in 1638. The Duke of York granted the Massachusetts Bay Colony control of the land the surrounded the settlement of Exeter. So Thomas Pettit sold his rights, and with his family, went to Long Island. In 1708, he was one of the first members of the Presbyterian Church in Newton, Long Island, He died in Newtown before the year 1668. (Note - L. R. Eddleman -evidently the date of 1708 is an error, or the man is the same Thomas)..

Secondly, it is my will and desire that whatever property, both real and personal, I am possessed of at my death shall be fairly sold by my executors to the highest bidders excepting my slaves which are to have the priviledge of choosing their masters and to be sold by my executors fairly at private sale to such persons or person as the said slaves ay choose to serve, at a fair price. He married Mary Bailey, daughter of Elias Bailey who was the son of John, and who later went to Jamaica, Long Island, bought thirty thousand acres of land there, in New Jersey, above the Falls of the Delaware. He and his sons owned fourteen hundred acres at Trenton which the State Capitol now stands on.Nahaniel and Mary Bailey Pettit had eight children:

Nathaniel Pettit, Jr. born 1676, married Elizabeth Heath, daughter of Andrew Heath who bought 420 acres of land at the Falls of the Delaware. In his will Andrew Heath, Hopewell Township, New Jersey, dated 3 Jan 1716-1717, he mentions his wife (second one), Hannah who was the widow Clark with three children, Samuel, Hannah, and Daniel Clark. Andrew Heath’s children were Andrew Jr., John, Elizabeth (above), Sarah, Richard and Martha.Nathaniel Pettit and Elizabeth Health Pettit had five children:

6. Jane Pettit, daughter of Thomas and Mary Bailey Pettit, was sometimes called “Christian”, married August 21, 1705, in the home of her uncle Jonathan Bailey to George Ely, son of Joshua Ely. Joshua Ely died in Trenton, New Jersey, 1702. In his will he provided (proved 1704) that his son George’s share be reduced if he married Christian Pettit, daughter of Nathaniel Pettit. George married he sister Jane, so the records say, but may have been the same girl with her name changed. They had the following children: John, George, Mary, Sarah, and Rebecca Ely.7. Johnathan Pettit, born 1721, came with his father and father’s brother to Amwell, New Jersey, about 1737. He married Deborah Robins, daughter of Daniel and Hope Robbins.8. Charles Pettit married Sarah Smith and went to Canada.ELIAS PETTIT (#4 above) son of Nathaniel and Mary Bailey Pettit, was named for his grandfather, Elias Bailey.It is thought by those who have done research on this line of the Pettit family that Elias Pettit had two wives, namely: Jane Furman, and a Miss Havens. After the death of Elias Pettit (or a divorce from him), Jane Furman Pettit took back her maiden name “Furman” which was a common occurrence and custom in that day, evidence as follows:

On Pay Roll again in May 1977 in Captain John Poulson’s Company. Again in June and July, 1778. During the period of service of Thomas Pettit, he came to Kentucky and took up land, Returned to Virginia and continued with his services in the War until closed.Proof of Land Claims: Garrard County, Kentucky Will Book A, p 57. Deposition of Benjamin Pettit taken at the request of John Brum to perpetuate testimony.“Benjamin Pettit swears that in the year 1775 or early 1776, he and Thomas Pettit were in the woods and found a spring known as the Sinking Spring, and that they made some improvements by marking some trees. Ten days after this, he and Thomas Pettit found another spring known as the Hogan Spring, and made some improvements. Thomas said if I found another spring close by to mark it for him. In February I was in the wood again and found a spring known as Rice’s Big Spring and I marked a big sycamore tree with our names by chopping them with a tomahawk.

Logan’s Fort was one mile west of Standford in Lincoln County.Benjamin Pettit was the son of Zedahiah Pettit, and Thomas Pettit was the son of Obediah Pettit (See Jane Furman’s Will).After the death of his father. 1807, Thomas Pettit, together with his family, returned to Kentucky, and settled in Washington County, where he lived until his death 1834.As stated above, Thomas Pettit married Bethethalon (Hetby, Hethy) Owns. wife Catharine, sons, Henry and John.

Christian Poffenbarger was born Maryland, died age 83 Feb 5, 1857, Jefferson County, Iowa

Married Mary Brantner, daughter of John Brantner, born in Virginia and died Oct 1853, Jefferson

County, Iowa. They were in Franklin County, Ohio in 1826, moved to Sangamon County, Illinois

Oct 28, 1839. Moved to Jefferson County, Iowa 1846. Their son, George W. Poffenbarger, born

Oct 16, 1817, Washington County, Maryland. Married Rachel Jones 1844.

Christian’s daughter, Mary Ann Poffenbarger, was born 12-6-1823 or 6-22-1823-25,

Washington County, Maryland, died Sept 10 1896, Bates County, Missouri. Married Dec 18,

1840 in Sangamon County, Illinois to Joseph Price, born Jan 30, 1818 or 1820, Ohio. Father born

in Virginia and Mother born in Pennsylvania. Joseph Price died March 31, 1904, Bates County,

Missouri, Mary and Joseph each buried Pleasant Grove Cemetery near Rockville, Bates, County,

Missouri.

LIFE OF ELIZA JANE PRICE (Daughter of Joseph Price and Mary Poffenbarger)

Born in Springfield, Illinois on Sugar Creek in Sangamond County, May 22, 1842. In 1843, the

day Iowa was opened for white settlers, went there. Then to Missouri in 1854. Went back to Iowa

same fall and lived one year, then moved back to Missouri in 1856. Then lived until 1860 and was

married to John W. Hiatt, March 8, 1860, Union Ville Post Office, Putnam County, Missouri. Then

moved from there to Marysville, Kansas, Marshall County, near Big Blue River. John enlisted in

1862 in Second Kansas Cavalry, Company H. Died in 1865 after serving three years. Died Oct 15.

He was sick and had been in Fort Leavenworth Government Hospital. Eliza and children went to

get him in two horse wagon. He lived two weeks after being home. Gertrude, their daughter died

a week later. Was around 3 years old. Eliza worked in field and garden and thought Gertrude got

sunstroke. She was very smart little girl. Very Bright.

Married again to Baptist Kirch May 12, 1867 in Marysville, Kansas. Eliza had farm and stone

house. Then lived there eight years until the grass hoppers wiped them out. Came to California

in 1875 to Sonoma County. They came on train and sat on benches at sides of cars. Stayed in

Sonoma County three months. Then on to Visalia where Eliza had dressmaking establishment.

She had a dressmaker helper. Left there Spring of 1876. Came to Fresno. Fannie born Oct 9. 1876.

Eliza had bakery shop in her home. He did odd jobs. They moved to Keeler ranch in 1877. Johnny

was drowned in June 23, 1879 in Kings Rive. He was 7 years, 7 weeks and 18 days old. He went

with Sam Craner to Centerville in two horse wagon to buy produce for store on Watts Valley

Road. Baptist Kirch and Sam were partners in store. They crossed river and all were drowned,

even horses. Body recovered and buried near Centerville in old cemetery. Johnny was hanging

to limb of tree. A negro boy swam his horse out to rescue him. He was hit in head of the horses

hoof. Then they moved to homestead in 1881. They made that there home rest of life, Centerville,

California.

He died May 14, 1930, Schell City, Missouri - had married at Nevada, Missouri - Mrs. Lucy A. Jones in 1913 (June 4) - married by Elder Giddens, according to a statement by her - that H. P.’s former wife died July 29, 1909, and her (Lucy’s) former husband in May 1905.

In 1930, Lucy A. Price lived afterwards with her son. Elmer G. Jones, of Neosho, Missouri.

His (Henry’s) Doctor of Neosho made affidavit and wrote letter to Elmer G. Jones that he became acquainted with “Brother” Price in 1878, when he lived near the Bates and Cass Co. line. Henry held services at “our church” at Johnstown and visited him several times - that sometime in the later 80’s He (Henry) settled near Lebeck - The Doctor thought there were his wife and eight children - severe epidemic of typhoid fever in Lebeck neighborhood and his wife, oldest daughter and oldest son died within 48 hours of each other - he became discouraged with the place - went to Schell City in March 19, 1891 - during summer of 1891, rest of children had typhoid, all recovering but youngest girl - that Henry’s 2nd wife Mrs. Van Swearingin died Dec. 29. 1909.

To get to this cemetery proceed west from Schell City, Missouri on County Road M. This turns into County Road C. It is about one mile from Schell City on the south side of the road. The graves are numbered by section (row) beginning on the NE corner of the cemetery. Henry Price and his third wife Lucy are buried in Section (Row) 13. This is right next to the center road on the second cross road. S. Highway 71 (Rich Hill) several miles, and then north on County Road P (at this point County Road B turns south towards Rockville). Go about a mile and then turn west on SE15305. The graves are numbered from 1 to 190. The right side of the cemetery is numbered first followed by the left side. Persons of interest in this cemetery are:

APPENDIX A: PLEASANT GROVE (MEYER’S CEMETERY)

This cemetery is located near Rockville, Bates County Missouri. This information is extracted from the book “Missouri Cemeteries - 1980” by E. Joyce Christensen, a copy of which can be found in the Butler Public Library in Butler, Bates County, Missouri. The book contains one mistake. It incorrectly identifies the cemetery as Myer’s cemetery which is actually located in another part of Bates County. The correct name if the cemetery is Meyer’s Cemetery. It was formerly known as Pleasant Grove Cemetery. To get to this cemetery proceed east on County Road B from U. S. Highway 71 (Rich Hill) several miles, and then north on County Road P (at this point County Road B turns south towards Rockville). Go about a mile and then turn west on SE15305. The cemetery is a short distance up this road. In the book, the graves are numbered from 1 to 190. The right side of the cemetery is numbered first followed by the left side.
