ANALYSIS OF DISTINCT NEEDS Demographics of the target group
What do women, girls, boys and men do in their home/shelter?
What concerns do women, girls, boys and men have about their personal safety related to shelter?
What are the firewood collection practices and type of cooking stoves used?
Design of the intervention
How are the shelter materials being distributed and allocated? Is the system in place accessible to all?
Are there measures in place to ensure there is no sexual violence due to poor, inappropriate or cramped shelter conditions?
Post disaster considerations
Encourage women’s involvement in shelter reconstruction and house repair
Protect girls and women’s housing and land rights
Ensure that house design reflects men’s and women’s needs
Address the menstrual hygiene needs of women and girls of reproductive age by providing access to appropriate hygiene supplies. Include sufficient quantities of bedding and blankets to allow for girls and boys to sleep separately
Register the adult woman in all households (except single-male headed households) as the primary recipient of Shelter & NFI assistance in order to reinforce ownership and control of women as the primary target of assistance; and avoid excluding second wives and their children in polygamous families. All data must be collected by sex and age
Establish confidential complaints mechanisms to receive and investigate allegations of sexual exploitation and abuse experienced by women, girls, boys and men in seeking or receiving assistance through shelter or NFI programmes
Consult women and girls as a priority at all steps in project design, implementation and monitoring; consult them separately from men and boys, particularly on the times and place of distributions. Seek to have all monitoring teams and their interpreters include women
Encourage equal representation of women and men on committees involved in the different components of project activities. Ensure there is an equal number of female and male residents involved in distributions and that they receive equal pay for the same work
