This presentation has been developed for the benefit of those who desire to better understand common characteristics of Generation Y and who are interested in positively facilitating their transition into an intergenerational workforce. The presentation identifies common characteristics of the generation, as a starting point, in order to understand the motivations of employees and for the benefit of developing strategic and tactical approaches to disconnects between generational values and business needs. The presentation makes use of generalities and may not represent everyone.

We invite anyone with edits, updates or inputs to this presentation to post them as comments at http://www.slideshare.com. The content of this presentation will be continually updated in an attempt to be as inclusive and representative as possible.

How About Human Development Stages of Life Adolescent to Young Adulthood

Cognitively, the adolescent is able to participate in abstract thinking, also referred to as the formal operational stage, enabling them to process and group ideas; adolescence also brings egocentrism in the form of imaginary audience (believing everything centers around one's appearance, thoughts, and behaviors) and personal fable (the belief that one is invincible and incapable of experiencing anything harmful). (Nevid & Rathus, 2005)adolescent

adolescentSocial and personality development in adolescence is exemplified in the adolescent's search for independence which frequently results in conflict with anyone in authoritative positions and the engagement in risk-taking or reckless behaviors in part due to one's belief of invulnerability. (Nevid & Rathus, 2005)

Young AdulthoodPhysical development for the young adult typically sees one in the best physical condition: strong, sharp senses, and stamina. Memory and thinking (cognitive) abilities are at their highest.

Young AdulthoodThe social development and personality development for the young adult can be identified with a desire to be socially independent and with a high ambition to succeed and can include occupation selection, life-partner, starting a family, accepting responsibilities, and social networking. (Nevid & Rathus, 2005)

Gen Ys Values

Meritocracy. Only the talented survive and anyone with talent should be able to succeed.

Camaraderie. Working with others, in teams or just collaboratively; group accomplishment is even sweeter than solo success. A sense of mentoring, or mentors, in the workplace.

Non-traditionalism. Doing things differently than in the past while making the point, this is different.

Integration of work and personal life in a number of ways: co-workers are family, work and social life are blended together, and personal and social activities are blended into the work day (or night).

Fierce independence: in choice of company to work for, when to leave, how you get your work done, how your work should be done are all individual decisions, (with input from social/professional networks) resulting in little loyalty to employers.

How Generation Y Sees Themselves

21

Unique. They see themselves as a breed apart, talented, skilled and in demand. They strongly believe in the value of their work and expect the rest of the world to appreciate it as well.

Proud. They are confident in their skills and they enjoy being looked to for advice and guidance and admired for their special talents.

Confident. They show little fear of the future, believing that their skills will always be in demand and they have a strong support net in place through family and friends.

Realistic. They are, however, realistic about financial compensation due to ups and downs in the economy.

innovate and communicate in new and distinctive ways.

a generation that can

35

Taken together, these trends suggest a number of implications for business

Financial compensation. Young knowledge workers may be realistic about variations in compensation because of economic fluctuations, but the underlying expectation of high compensation remains.

Caring. The sense of being nurtured and indulged by the organization is central.

Career opportunities. Gen Y workers have the expectation that their organization will offer learning and growth opportunities: the chance to do creative, challenging work, and the prospect to grow.

Collaboration. Young workers seek a work culture that is organized around teamwork and collaboration.

Failure for many in Generation YNot pursuing an opportunity; not trying

Not effectively managing school, work, and life balance

Not being true to oneself; compromising integrity

Not succeeding; not being challenged
