    5. Write the difference between the PN junction diode and zener diode.

    6. Give the biasing conditions for a transistor to operate as an amplifier.

    7. Write the truth table ofan Exclusive-OR gate.

    8. Express the following binary numbers in its equivalent decimal numbers :(a) 10.01(b) 101.11

    9. State any two differences between analog and digital signals.

    11. (a) (i) Calculate the current in 20 ohm resistor in the circuit shown below. (8)

    (ii) Derive expressions for impedance, power factor and current of a RL series

    circuit connected across alternating current source. Draw also the phasordiagram. (8)

    11. (b) (i) For the circuit shown below, calculate the line current, the power and thepower factor. The value of R, L and C in each phase are 10 , 1 H and100 F respectively. (8)

    (ii) Explain the principle of operation of attraction-type and repulsion-typeof moving iron instruments with neat sketches.

    12. (a) (i) Draw the circuit diagram of the following three types of dc motors andwrite the relationships among the currents and voltages: (1) Separatelyexcited motor (2) Series motor (3) Shunt motor. (6)

    (ii) Explain the characteristics of a d.c. shunt motor. Sketch the graphicalrepresentation of the concerned characteristics. (6)

    (iii) A DC motor connected to a 460 V supply has an armature resistance of0.15 ohms. Calculate (1) the value of back emf when the armature current

    is 120 A (2) the value of armature current when the back emf is 447 V.(4)

    12. (b) (i) Explain the principle of operation of single phase transformer.(8)

    (ii) Derive the EMF equation of a transformer. (8)

    13. (a) (i) Explain the mechanism of avalanche breakdown and zener breakdown.(8)

    (ii) With the help of relevant circuit and V-I characteristics, show how a zener

    diode is used as a voltage regulator. (8)

    (ii) Describe about frequency modulation. Obtain the mathematical represen-tation of frequency modulated wave and explain modulation index. (10)

    15. (b) (i) With the help of suitable block diagram, explain the various functionalblocks of TV transmitter. (8)

    (ii) Describe the satellite communication system, with the help of block dia-grams of earth-station transmitter and earth-station receiver. (8)
