    1Introduction

    Galaxy PulsarEdge841PowerSystemController

    OverviewTheGalaxyPulsarfamilyofcontrollersiscomprisedoftheGalaxyPulsarPlusandGalaxyPulsarEdge controllers. This manual covers the Galaxy Pulsar Edge 841 power system controllers.Thesecontrollersweredevelopedtobe integrated intothepowershelfmodulesoftheCompactPower Line (CPL) and Infinity NE power systems designed for both indoor and outdoorcabinetizedandframepowerapplications.Inaddition,theGalaxyPulsarEdgealsomanagestheNP,EP,IP,and59Xseriesorrectifiers.ThemodularhardwareandsoftwaredesignoftheGalaxyPulsarEdge allowsforeasycustomizationforspecificapplications.

    The Galaxy Pulsar Edge provides control and alarm monitoring functions over severalcommunication interfaces including a standard robust RS485 digital serial interface thatinterconnects system rectifiers and other peripherals. Control and monitoring involves powermodulemanagementincludingitemsascentralizedsettingsforrectifieroutputsetpointvoltages,alarmmanagementitemswithuserdefinedhighandlowvoltagealarmandshutdownthresholds,load and battery disconnect management, distribution monitoring, and battery managementfeatures. Users have access to these and many more features through both local and remotemeans. The majority of the configurable items for the controllers features and its associatedthresholdshavebeensetwithindustrystandarddefaults.Thesedefaultshelpminimizethesetupprocessinthefield.Tofurtherfacilitatefieldinstallation,thesecontrollersare alsoavailablewithcustomerspecificconfigurationfactorydefaults.CustomizationallowsacontrollertobeFactorytailoredforapplicationsorforspecificconfigurationpreferences.

    ApplicationsTheGalaxyPulsarEdgecontroller ispresentlyavailable inapplications involving theCompactPowerLine(CPL) and theSmallPowerSystem(SPS).These systemsconsist of an integratedcontrollerpowershelfthatcanbesingleshelfsystemswithintegrateddistributionormultishelfsystemswithexternaldistributionforbatteryorbatterylessDCpowersystems.Thiscontrollerfamily can also bemade available for monitoring and control in custom or embeddedapplications.FollowingareproductdepictionsutilizingthevariousconfigurationsoftheGalaxyPulsar Edge controller. These applications utilize the 841 and SPS841Galaxy Pulsar Edgecontrollers.     Systems that utilize the Galaxy Pulsar Edge controller provide a dedicated location for thecontrollerthatallowsthemaximumnumberofpowermodulestobeusedpershelf.Accesstothecontrollerinputs/outputsislocatedonasinglerearedgeconnector.Thisconnectordistributesthesignalstotheenduserthroughvariousinterfacesdesignedintotherearlocationsoftheshelftheunitresides.Presentsystemslocatethecontrollertoadedicatedpositionlocatedtotheleftmostpower position in the shelf. TheGalaxy Pulsar Edge controller provides a front panelRS232asynchronousCraftport for local terminalaccess.ThestandardCraftportconnection isaDB9but an RJ45 serial port connection is available. EasyView 2, which simulates the web pageinterface, is providedas theGraphicalUser Interfacewhenaccessing over thisCraft port.TheGalaxy Pulsar Edge controller is typically preinstalled into the power shelf at the factory.However,itcanbeorderedseparatelyforspares,installedinthefield,orintegratedintocustomsystems.

    IntroductionLineage Power rectifiers accept alternating current (ac) power and rectify it to produce directcurrent(dc)powerforpoweringexternalequipment(loads).Convertersacceptthedcoutputfromrectifiers or other sources and convert it to various regulated output dc levels also needed forpoweringexternalequipment(loads).Batteries,generators,andUPSareusedtoprovidebackuppower when ac is lost.When batteries are used, they are connected in parallel for additionalcapacityalongwiththerectifieroutputsthroughappropriatebreakersandcontactordisconnects.DCpowerisdistributedthroughdistributionpanelswithvariousprotectorsandcontactors.Theserectifiers, backup systems, and distribution components are all managed by theGalaxyPulsarEdge841systemcontroller.Thefollowingfiguredepictsagenericrepresentationofthesystemcontrollerand itsrelationshipinapowersystem.Thecomponentsdepictedandtheirassociatedfeaturesastheyrelatetothe systemcontrollerwillbediscussedinthismanual.

    Galaxy PulsarEdge841ConfigurationsThemain841microprocessorboardcomprisestheGalaxyPulsarEdgefamilyofpowersystemcontrollers. This controller is designed to fit a variety of systems and applications. Systemsutilizingthiscontrolleraredesignedtoallowthecontrollerbequicklyinstalledorremovedfromitsallocatedpositionthroughasimplethumbscrewwithouthavingtoremoveinputoutputcableattachments. The input and output cable assemblies are connectorized and can quickly beremoved or installed into the respective power shelf. There are several different configurationoptionsfortheGalaxyPulsarEdge841controller.ThecontrollercanbeorderedforCPorSPSpowersystemsandbeconfigureddifferentlyforthesepowersystems.Configurationincludesthenumber of customer inputs or outputs and the desired front panel Craft port interface. Theseoptionsmustbeordered andare preinstalled atthefactory.

    The following figure shows a generic block diagram of the basic components of the GalaxyPulsar Edgecontroller for the J2007001 power shelf. The exact system interconnect will varydependingontheshelfdesign.Somedesignsmayormaynothave interconnectboardsorcables.

    Torque electrical connections to the values specified on labels or in the productdocumentation.

    Alarmcontactsfromthe841arenotfusedwithinthecontrollerorpowershelftherefore,current limitingprotection for these contactsmustbe inherent in or providedby externalcircuitsthatusethesecontacts.Maximumratingsforalarmconnectionsare60Vdcand0.5amperes.Exceedingthesemaximumratingscouldresultinfireordamagetotheunit.

    PreparationThissectionoutlinesthesequenceforinstallingandquicklyconfiguringtheGalaxyPulsarEdge841 controller into a power system. Most power systems that are purchased with the GalaxyPulsarEdgecontrollerwillbe shippedfromthe factorywith the controllerwillbepreinstalled.

    OverviewThe Galaxy Pulsar Edge 841 family of controllers provides system monitoring and controlfeaturesforCP,SPS,andotherLineagePowerrectifierbasedpowersystems.Thesecontrollersmonitorandcontrolsystemcomponentsincludingrectifiersanddistributionmodulesviaamultidrop RS485 digital communications bus. System status, parameters, settings, and alarmthresholds canbeviewedandconfigured from the controllers front paneldisplay.Assignmentandconfiguration of alarm inputs and output relays canbeperformed froma laptop computerdirectly connected to the front access local RS232 Craft port or directly connected to theEthernetportwhen thecontroller isconfigured tooperate inaDHCPServermode.Accesscanalsobe obtainedremotely througha network connection to theWorldWideWeb (internet) oryourenterprisenetwork(intranet).AconnectionthroughanoptionalexternalmodemconnectedtothecontrollersRS232portis also possible.

    MaintenanceAllowsremoteaccesstoControl/Operationcommandsthatareavailablethroughthe front panel.
