We were thrilled to host the ARSC meeting in New Orleans Nov 2nd-4th. We rode in horse-drawn carriages to our dinner at The Court of Two Sisters, attempted an “escape room” at Clue Carre and played golf at TPC Louisiana. It was great to play tourist in our city with our ARSC friends!

"Kayla is dependable, not only is she to work on time but she rarely miss-es a day. She's a multitasker, it takes a special person to juggle numerous tasks without letting the ball drop. She does anything asked of her in a timely manner, with a smile and pleasant personality."- Shelly Guilbeau, Executive Director

"Kayla is one of those employees that I can count on day-in and day-out. She exemplifies the characteristics of a model employee."- Dixi Dufrene, Director of Operations

2016Employee of

the Year:

Kayla Usey

What do you believe makes a good employee?A good employee is always on time, very reliable, able to multitask, willing to learn, and goes out of their way to help others. Good employees are also respectful to customers and their coworkers.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?Growing up, I wanted to be a lawyer.

What’s the best part of your job?The best part of my job is working with people who feel like family. When you enjoy being around your coworkers waking up at 4:15am isn’t so bad.

What’s your favorite time of the year at Gulf Coast and why?My favorite time of year is Christmas. The Christmas party is always a very nice event in which we get to hang out and enjoy a few drinks with our co-workers outside of the office setting. I also enjoy seeing the office decorated at this time of the year.

What is your favorite thing to do away from work?I really enjoy spending time with my family and hanging out with my friends. I also enjoy how happy my godchildren are when they get to have a “slumber party” at Nanny’s house.

What is your favorite Gulf Coast Safety Council memory? My favorite memory is receiving Employee of the Year. It’s nice to be recog-nized for all of your hard work throughout the year!

The OSHA Outreach Training Program provides training for workers and employers on the recognition, avoidance, abatement, and prevention of safety and health hazards in workplace. The program also provides information regarding workers' rights, employer responsibilities, and how to file a complaint. This is a voluntary program and does not meet training requirements for any OSHA standards.

Through this program, workers can attend 10-hour or 30-hour classes delivered by OSHA-au-thorized trainers. The 10-hour class is intended for entry level workers, while the 30-hour class is more appropriate for workers with some safety responsibility.

Back in June, we held a Lunch & Learn on the topic of “What It Means to Intervene”. James Fish (Dow SCO) and Rudy Simoneaux (GCSC) present-ed to a crowd of over 40 people on issues regarding intervening in the workplace. It was a very interactive session and a great open discussion.

In November, we held a second Lunch & Learn on the topic of“Going Beyond the Obvious.” It was another open, interactive session presented by Rudy Simoneaux (GCSC). The feedback from June had many requests to take the intervention process and godeeper into safety observations and discuss techniques/issues regardingidentifying the things that are not obvious, such as proper PPE, etc.

With the potential for extreme temperature changes outdoors, industri-al workers need to be prepared to dress for protection against the ele-ments during winter, even in the South! Since the cold weather increases the possibility of hand injuries, employers should plan to protect work-ers' hands from winter-related safety problems.

Here are five tips to improve hand safety for the winter:

1. Choose PPE That Will Withstand the Cold:Provide workers with PPE that is made for freezing conditions to prevent frost-bite and other health issues due to cold. These gloves could include linings made from warm materials that are wind and water-proof.

2. Size Gloves ProperlyWinter gloves should act as an extra layer of protection for employees and this means having PPE that fits the specific measurements of individual em-ployees. Rather than using gloves that are one-size fits all, order gloves from manufacturers in a variety of sizes to ensure workers have the right fit and will cover their hands completely.

3. Select Hand Tools for Winter-Specific GlovesWith gloves on, employees might also need to make sure they will be able to handle tools properly. Test winter gloves when operating hand tools to see whether workers are comfortable.

4. Recognize Symptoms of Cold StressRecognizing cold stress symptoms could allow workers to know when to take a break from working outside in the cold to avert winter-related hand injuries.

5. Be Prepared for Emergency ResponseIn case a worker has signs of frostbite or other health issues from the cold, employers should have medical equipment and supplies on stand by to help employees suffering from these symptoms.
