DO’s

This Television has been designed and manu-factured to meet international safety standards,but like any electrical equipment, care must betaken if you are to obtain the best results andsafety is to be assured.DO read the operating instructions before youattempt to use the equipment.

DO consult your dealer if you are in any doubtabout installation, operation or safety of yourequipment.

DO be careful with glass panels or doors onequipment.This TV is supplied with a fitted mains plug.This plug must not be cut off as it may containa special radio interference filter, the removal

of which could lead to impaired performance.If you wish to extend the lead, obtain an appro-priate safety approved extension lead or con-sult your dealer.

Observe the manufacturers instructions whenconnecting extension leads to the TV. Checkthe fuse rating on the new plug, this should befitted with a 5 Amp fuse which conforms to ei-ther ASTA or BSI (BS1 362) approvals, these

1. Power Source

The set should be operated only from a 220-240V AC, 50 Hz. outlet. Ensure you selectthe correct voltage setting for your conve-nience.

2. Power Cord

Do not place the set, a piece of furniture,etc.on the power cord(mains lead) or pinch thecord.Handle the power cord by the plug.Donot pull out the plug by tugging the cord andnever touch the power cord when yourhands are wet as this could cause a shortcircuit or electric shock.Never make a knot inthe cord or tie it with other cord.The powercord should be placed in such a way thatthey are not likely to be stepped on.A damaged power cord can cause fire orgive you an electric shock. When it is dam-aged and need to be changed, it should bedone by qualified personel.

3. Moisture and Water

Do not use this equipment in a humid anddamp place (avoid the bathroom, the sink inthe kitchen, and near the washing machine).Do not expose this equipment to rain or wa-ter, as this may be dangerous and do notplace objects filled with liquids,such asflower vases on top of the set. Avoid fromdripping or splashing.If any solid object or liquid falls into the cabi-net, unplug the set and have it checked byqualified personnel before operating it anyfurther.

4. Cleaning

Before cleaning, unplug the set from the walloutlet. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners.Use soft and dry cloth.

5. VentilationThe slots and openings on the back coverare intended for ventilation and to ensure re-liable operation. To prevent overheating,these openings must not be blocked or cov-ered in anyway.

Oc-casionally, a few non-active pixels may ap-pear on the screen as a fixed point of blue,green or red. Please note that this doesnot affect the performance of your prod-uct."

6.Heat and Flames

The set should not be placed near to nakedflames and sources of intense heat,such asan electric heater. Ensure that no nakedflame sources, such as lighted candles, areplaced on top of the set.

7. LightningIn case of storm and lightning or when go-ing on holiday, disconnect the power cordfrom the wall outlet.

8. Replacement PartWhen replacement parts are required, be surethe service technician has used replacementparts which are specified by the manufactureror have the same specifications as the origi-nal one. Unauthorised substitutions may re-sult in fire, electrical shock, or other hazards.

9 . ServicingPlease refer all servicing to qualified per-sonnel. Do not remove the cover yourself asthis may result in an electric shock.

Instructions for waste disposal:

• After unpacking, allow the TV set to reach theambient room temperature before you con-nect the set to the mains.

• Connect the aerial or cable TV plug to theAerial input socket located at the rear of theTV and connect the cable plug coming outfrom the TV out socket located on the devices(VCR, DVB-T etc.) to this socket as well.

How To Connect Other Devices

IMPORTANT: Switch off the TV before con-necting any external device.

Sockets for external connections are at therear side of the TV. For connection of otherdevices via Scart refer to the manuals of therelated devices.

Inserting Batteries In The RemoteControl Handset

• Remove the battery cover located on theback of the handset by gently pulling down-wards from the indicated part.

• Insert two AA/R6 or equivalent type batteriesinside. Place the batteries in the right direc-tions.

• Replace the battery cover.

NOTE: Remove the batteries from remotecontrol handset when it is not to be used fora long period.Otherwise it can be damageddue to any leakage of batteries.

SwitchingTheTVON/OFF

To switch the TV on:

Your TV will switch on in two steps:

1- Connect the power supply cord to the sys-tem. Press Power On/Off switch “ ” locatedby the mains input socket. Then the TVswitches itself to stand-by mode and the ledon the front of the TV becomes Red.

2- To switch on the TV from stand-by modeeither:

Press a digit button on the remote control sothat a programme number is selected,

or,Press the "-P/CH" or "P/CH+" button at theright side of the TV or press the “P-” or “P+”button on the remote control, so that lastmode switched off is selected.By either method the TV will switch on andthe led becomes green.

To switch the TV off:

• Press the “ (stand-by)” button on the re-mote control or On/Off switch at the rightside of the TV, so the TV will switch to stand-by mode and the GREEN LED will becomeRED.

To power down the TV completely, pressPower On/Off button at the rear side of theTV,or,

Initial APS(Automatic ProgrammingSystem)

The following menu will be displayed on thescreen when you turn your TV on for the firsttime. APS, searches and sorts all channelsand stores them automatically on your TV,a c c o r d i n g t o t h e t r a n s m i s s i o n o fprogramme systems in your area.

OperatingTheTVYou can operate your TV using both the re-mote control handset and the buttons on theset.

Operating with the buttons on theTV set

Volume setting and programme selectioncan be made by using the buttons on thecontrol panel at the right side of the TV.

Volume Setting

Press the “- ” button to decrease volumeor the “ +” button to increase volume, soa volume level scale (slider) will be dis-played at the bottom of the screen.

Programme Selecting

Press the “P/CH+” button to select the nextprogramme or the “P/CH-” button to selectthe previous programme.

Entering The Menu

Press the “MENU” button on the controlpanel at the side of the TV to enter the menu.

“P/CH+ / -P/CH” and “ + / - ” buttonson the TV are used as navigation buttons inmenu.

AV Mode

Press the “AV” button on the control panelat the side of the TV to switch your TV to EXTmodes.

Operating With Remote Control

The remote control handset of your TV is de-signed to control all the functions of your TV.The functions will be described in accor-dance with the menu system of your TV.Functions of the menu system are de-scribed in Menu System section.

Volume Setting

Press the button to increase volume.Press the button to decrease volume. Avolume level scale (slider) will be displayedat the bottom of the screen.

Programme Selecting

(Previous or next programme)

• Press the “P-” button to select the previousprogramme.

Programme Selecting (direct access):

Press digit buttons on the remote controlhandset to select programmes between 0and 9. The TV will switch to the selectedprogramme after a short delay.

• For a two digit programme number enter thesecond digit after pressing the first digitwithin 2 seconds.

Brightness

Sharpness

By pressing / button, select Sharp-ness. Press button to increase sharp-ness. Press button to decrease sharp-ness. Sharpness level can be adjusted be-tween 0 and 31.

Colour

By pressing / button, select Colour.Press button to increase colour. Press button to decrease colour. Colour level canbe adjusted between 0 and 99.

Hue

This item is displayed in picture menu whenthe TV receives an NTSC signal. By press-ing / button, select hue. Press buttonto increase hue. Press button to decreasehue. Hue level can be adjusted between -31and 31.

Colour Temp

By pressing / button, select ColourTemp. Press / button to choose one ofthese options: Cool, Normal and Warm.

Noise Reduction

This item is used to reduce the image noiseand improve the picture quality at weak sig-nals.

By pressing / button, select Noise Re-duction. Press / button to set Noise re-duction level to Off, Low, Medium or High.

Balance

By pressing / button, select Balance.Press button to increase balance to theright. Press button to increase balance tothe left. Balance level can be adjusted be-tween -31 and 31.

Sound Mode

By pressing / button, select SoundMode. Press / button to change themode.

You can select Mono, Stereo, Dual A or DualB mode, only if the selected channel sup-ports that mode.

In case of bilingual broadcast (Dual Sound),you can select original or dubbed languageusing mode option.

AVL

Automatic Volume Limiting (AVL) functionadjusts the sound to obtain fixed output levelbetween programs, having different soundlevels.

Pressing / button will turn this feature onor off.

Effect

You can use this feature to switch the soundeffect on or off. If the current sound system isMono and the sound effect is switched on,then the sound will be heard as if it is Ste-reo. If the current sound system is Stereo,switching this effect on will give a more spa-tial effect.

Pressing / button will turn this feature onor off.

Dynamic Bass

Sleep Timer

By pressing / button, select SleepTimer. The timer can be programmed be-tween Off and 2 hours in steps of 10 min-utes by pressing / button. If sleep timeris activated, at the end of the selected time,the TV goes automatically to stand-by mode.

Child Lock

You can use this feature to prevent childrenturning the TV on or changing programs oradjustments etc. without remote control.

The child lock feature can be set by / but-ton to either on or off. When off is selected,there will be no difference in the operation ofyour TV. When on is selected, the TV canonly be controlled by the remote controlhandset. In this case the control panel but-tons, except the Power on/off button, at therear side of the TV will not work. If one ofthese buttons is pressed, “Child Lock On”will be displayed on the screen.

Default Zoom

Blue Background

You can set the TV to automatically changeto a blue screen if the signal is weak or ab-sent, or when there is no input from an exter-nal device.

The Blue Background feature can be turnedon or off by pressing / button.

PIP and PAP modes

Press the button to switch to PIP mode.At PIP Mode, a small picture (PIP picture) isdisplayed on the main picture. There are 1size and 4 positions (upper left, upper right,bottom left and bottom right) available for thePIP window. You can use button tochange the PIP position. Aspect Ratio of thePIP window is fixed and 4:3.

When PIP Mode is entered, the default activewindow is PIP window and the active win-dow is indicated by a green frame around it.The active window can be changed bypressing the “Yellow” button. The status infoOSD belongs to active window. The place ofthe status OSDs are same for both win-dows.

For PIP picture restrictions, see table onpage 27.

Press the button twice to switch to PAPmode.

At PAP Mode, two pictures with equal sizesare displayed on the screen. Aspect Ratiosof the windows are fixed.When you switch to PAP Mode, Main windowin PIP Mode is displayed on the right side ofthe screen. The active window can bechanged by pressing the “Yellow” button.Source restrictions of PAP Mode are sameas in PIP Mode. It is not possible to show 2different channels from the TV tuner at thesame time.

Freeze Picture

You can freeze the picture on the screen bypressing the button. At PIP and PAP lay-outs; only the main picture can be frozen.

Zoom Modes

Zoom mode can be changed by pressingthe button. You can change the screensize according to the picture aspect ratio.Select the optimum one from the followingZOOM modes.Note: You can only choose 4:3 and FULL in PCmode.

Auto:

When a WSS (Wide Screen Signalling) sig-nal, which shows the aspect ratio of the pic-ture, is included in the broadcast signal orthe signal from an external device, the TVautomatically changes the ZOOM mode ac-cording to the WSS signal.

• When the AUTO mode does not function cor-rectly due to poor WSS signal quality orwhen you want to change the ZOOM mode,change to another ZOOM mode manually.

Full:

This uniformly stretches the left and rightsides of a normal picture (4:3 aspect ratio)to fill the wide TV screen.

• For 16:9 aspect ratio pictures that have beensqueezed into a normal picture (4:3 aspectratio), use the Full mode to restore the pic-ture to its original shape.

16:9 Zoom:

This zooms up the wide picture (16:9 aspectratio) to the full screen.

16:9 Subtitle:

This zooms up the wide picture (16:9 aspectratio) with subtitles to the full screen.

“Default Zoom” Modes:

4:3

Use to view a normal picture (4:3 aspect ra-tio) as this is its original shape.

14:9 Zoom:

This zooms up the wide picture (14:9 aspectratio) to the upper and lower limits of thescreen.

Panoramic:

This stretches the left and right sides of anormal picture (4:3 aspect ratio) to fill thescreen, without making the picture appearunnatural.

The top and bottom of the picture are slightlycut off.

TeletextTeletext is an information system that dis-plays text on your TV screen. Using the Tele-text information system you can view a pageof information on a subject that is availablein the list of contents (index).

To Operate Teletext

• Select a TV station where Teletext is beingtransmitted.

• Press the button. Usually the list of con-tents (index) is displayed on the screen.

To Select A Page Of Teletext

• Press the appropriate digit buttons for therequired Teletext page number.

The selected page number is displayed inthe top left corner of the screen. The Teletextpage counter searches until the selectedpage number is located, the desired page isthen displayed on the screen.

• Press the button to move the Teletextscreen forward one page at a time.

• Press the button to move the Teletextscreen backward one page at a time.

To Select Index Page

• To select the page number of the index (gen-erally page 100), press the button.

To Select Teletext With A TVProgramme

• Press the button. The text is now super-imposed over the programme on thescreen.

• Press the button again to return to theTeletext page.

To Select Double Height Text

• Press the button for the top half of the in-formation page to be displayed in doubleheight text.

• Press the button again for the bottom halfof the information page to be displayed indouble height text.

• Press the button once more for the fullpage of normal height text.

To Reveal “Concealed”Information

• Pressing the button once will reveal an-swers on a quiz or games page.

• Pressing the button again will concealthe revealed answers.

To Stop Automatic Page Change

The teletext page you have selected maycontain more information than what is on thescreen; the rest of the information will bedisplayed after a period of time.

• Press the button to stop the automaticpage change.

• Press the button again to allow the nextpage to be displayed.

To Select A Subcode Page

Subcode pages are subsections of longTeletext pages that can only be displayed onthe screen one section at a time.

• Select the required Teletext page.

• Press the button.

• Select the required subcode page numberby pressing four digit buttons (e.g. 0001).

• If the selected subcode page is not displayedin a short time, press the button. TVprogramme will be displayed on the screen.

• Teletext page number will be displayed onthe upper left corner of the screen when theselected page is found.

• Press the button to display the selectedTeletext page.

PAT (Picture and Text)

• Press the RED ( ) button to see theprogramme and teletext at the same time.The screen will be divided into two parts.Teletext will be displayed on the left side ofthe screen.

To Exit Teletext

• Press the button. The screen will switchto TV mode.

To Display The Time

• While watching a TV programme with Tele-text transmission press the button. Thecurrent time information, captured from Tele-text will be displayed on the screen.

• If the programme being watched does nothave Teletext transmission, no informationwill be displayed.

Fastext

Your TV supports the 1000 page Teletextsystem. When the page number of any ofthe 1000 pages in memory is entered, thesystem will not search for the requestedpage; instead it will display the page auto-matically. If the requested page is not inmemory, the system will search for the re-quested page number and save the 1000pages including the requested page intomemory after finding it.• Press the button to move the Teletext

screen forward one page at a time.

• Press the button to move the Teletextscreen backward one page at a time.

For Fastext

The subject-heading for the information mayhave a particular colour.

• Press an appropriate RED, GREEN, YELLOWor BLUE button in order to reach the relevantpage quickly.

For TOP text

TOP text mode of operation will be activatedautomatically according to the transmission.

• If TOP text transmission is present, colourcoded buttons will appear in status row.

• If TOP text transmission is not present, sta-tus row will not appear.

The subject-heading for information may belocated in coloured box.In Top mode the or commands will re-quest the next or previous page respectively.If TOP text transmission is not available, incase of operation of these commands,wraparound occurs. For example page 100appears to be one greater than page 199.

ConnectPeripheralEquipment

There is a wide range of audio and videoequipment that can be connected to your TV.

The following connection diagrams showyou where the different (Optional) equipmentshould be connected at the rear side of theTV.

High Definition

Your Hitachi LCD Television is capable ofdisplaying High Definition pictures from de-vices such as a High Definition Satellite Re-ceiver or DVD Player. These devices mustbe connected via the HDMI socket (EXT-5) orComponent Socket (EXT-3). These socketscan accept either 720p or 1080i signals.

Via The Scart

LCD TV has 2 Scart sockets. If you want toconnect peripherals (e.g. video, decoder,etc.) which have Scart sockets to the TV, useSCART 1 or SCART 2 inputs.

If an external device is connected via theScart sockets, the TV will be switched to AVmode automatically.

Via Aerial Input

If you want to connect to your TV, peripheralslike video recorders or decoders, but the de-vice you want to connect does not have aScart socket, you should connect it to theAerial input of the TV.

If the VCR is connected via Aerial input itis suggested to use Programme 0.

Decoder

Cable TV offers you a wide choice of pro-grams. Most of them are free, others are tobe paid for by the viewer. This means thatyou will need to subscribe to the broadcast-ing organisation whose programmes youwish to receive. This organisation will supplyyou a corresponding decoder unit to allowthe programmes to be unscrambled.

For further information ask your dealer. Seealso the booklet supplied with your decoder.

Connect a decoder with an aerial socketto the TV

• Connect the aerial cable.

Connect a decoder without an aerialsocket to the TV

• Connect the decoder to the TV with a Scartcable to SCART 1.

TV And Video Recorder

• Connect the aerial cables.

Better picture quality can be obtained if youalso connect a Scart cable to SCART sock-ets.

Playback NTSCTo use this option you can;

• Connect an NTSC VCR player to a Scartsocket at the rear side of the TV.

• Connect an NTSC VCR player to RCA Jacksat the rear side of the TV.

Then, press the button to select appro-priate source.

CopyFacilitySource selection for VCR recording.• Select Feature menu.

• Select Ext-2 Out by pressing / button.

• Select a source to copy the picture from thatsource.

Search For And Store The TestSignal Of The Video Recorder

• Unplug the aerial cable from the aerialsocket of your video recorder.

• Switch on your TV and put the video recorderon the test signal. (See the booklet for yourvideo recorder.)

• Enter the Install menu and select search.• Search for the test signal of your video re-

corder in the same way as you searched forand stored the TV signals. Store the test sig-nal under programme number 0.

To Connect To AV Input

Connect your camera or camcorder to AV(EXT-4) input at the rear side of the TV.

• Connect your equipment to the TV via VIDEO(yellow), AUDIO R (red) and AUDIO L (white)inputs. You must connect the jacks to the in-put using the same colour.

To Connect To S-VHS Input

Connect your camera or camcorder S-VHSinput at the rear side of the TV.

• Connect your equipment to the TV via S-VHSinput and audio inputs of AV inputs by usingS-VHS cables.

Connect The Decoder To TheVideo Recorder

Some video recorders have a special Scartsocket for decoder.

• Connect a Scart cable to the Scart socket ofyour decoder and to the special Scart socketof your video recorder. Refer to the bookletof your video recorder.

• To connect your video recorder to the TV, re-fer to the TV and Video Recorder section.

If you want to connect more equipment toyour TV, consult your dealer.

Connecting Headphones

Use the stereo headphone socket at therear side of the TV, to connect headphones.

Connecting Subwoofer

Use Subwoofer Out socket to connect anexternal, active subwoofer to the set to give amuch deeper bass effect.

haps interrupt the sound, pressing thebutton?

Sound is coming from only one of thespeakers. Is the balance set to one ex-treme? See Sound menu.

Remote Control

Your TV no longer responds to the remotecontrol. Perhaps the batteries are ex-hausted. If so you can still use the local but-tons at the bottom of the TV.

Have you selected the wrong menu? Pressthe button to return to TV mode or pressthe button to return to the previous menu.

No solution:

Switch your TV set off and on. If this does notwork, call the service personnel; never at-tempt to repair it yourself.

TipsCare Of The Screen

Clean the screen with a slightly damp, softcloth. Do not use abrasive solvents as theymay damage the TV screen coating layer.

Poor Picture

Have you selected the correct TV system? Isyour TV set or house aerial located too closeto non-earthed audio equipment or neonlights, etc.?

Mountains or high buildings can causedouble pictures or ghost images. Some-times you can improve the picture quality bychanging the direction of the aerial.

Is the picture or Teletext unrecognisable?Check if you have entered the correct fre-quency.

The picture quality may degrade when twoperipherals are connected to the TV at thesame time. In such a case, disconnect oneof the peripherals.

No Picture

Is the aerial connected properly? Are theplugs connected tightly to the aerial socket?Is the aerial cable damaged? Are suitableplugs used to connect the aerial? If you arein doubt, consult your dealer.

No Picture could mean that your TV is notreceiving a transmission. Have you selectedthe correct button on the remote control?Tryonce more.
