READERS, who are fans of the cult antics of ‘Monty Python’s Flying Circus, will be delighted by The Regent Theatre’s decision to bring back ‘Monty Python’s Spamalot’ in the New Year!Seen by over half-a-million people in the UK alone, audiences all around the world have been roaring with laughter, since ‘Monty Python’s Spamalot’ (written by Eric Idle and John DuPrez and “lovingly ripped-off” from the 1975 film, ‘Monty Python and the Holy Grail’) won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2005.

The show tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and features a bevy (or possibly a brace) of beautiful showgirls, witch-burnings (cancelled as too expensive), not to mention cows, killer-rabbits and French people.

It features fantastic tunes (which are catchier than the plague), including ‘He Is Not Dead Yet’, ‘Knights Of The Round Table’, ‘Find Your Grail’ and, of course, the ‘Nation’s Favourite Comedy Song’ (Reader’s Digest Poll 2009), ‘Always Look on The Bright Side Of The Life’.

‘Spamalot’ stars Bonnie Langford and Todd Carty, who returns as Patsy (they can’t get shot of him!).

Bonnie enjoyed a successful tour of the USA (playing Roxie Hart in ‘Chicago’),

and her previous musical roles include Miss Adelaide in ‘Guys & Dolls’, Ado Annie (‘Oklahoma!’), Charlie in ‘Charlie Girl’ and the eponymous hero of ‘Peter Pan’, in addition to starring in numerous pantomimes.

Enthused The Independent: “I felt I might actually die of laughter”, while The Times declared: “Very funny? You bet. You have to be a dead parrot not to agree.”

The musical comedy runs from Monday, February 27th, to Saturday, March 3rd, at 7.30pm, with 2.30pm matinee performances on Wednesday and Saturday.

Tickets (starting from £14.50) are available from The Regent’s Box Office on 0844 871 7649 or book online at www.atgtickets.com/stoke

Fabulous family winners return on FREE night at Baddeley Green WMC!!THE first Friday evening of the New Year of 2012 sees Baddeley Green WMC presenting a FREE night as a ‘thank you’ for everyone’s support during a very successful 2011!

Yes, admission is free, when Beardsmith (who achieved national fame in December, 2009, when they deservedly won the ‘family of the year’ competition on GMTV, leading to a Christmas album being recorded) return to perform at the Stoke-on-Trent club on January 6th.

Beardsmith is a fantastic, six-piece live band, featuring members of the same family - from young Gill on the drums to dad, Neil, on bass-guitar.

All members of the family band have outstanding musical ability and talent, and they are an absolute joy to watch and listen to!

Friday night live entertainment at the Leek New Road venue received a tremendous boost, thanks to an exciting, new catalogue of premier-quality performers, bands and groups.

As a result, Friday evenings in the club’s excellent concert room (which can accommodate

in excess of 250 people) have played a massive part in its renaissance, with ‘full houses’ now a regular occurrence.

In 2011, lovers of 1960s’ bands were regaled with performances by those fondly-remembered groups, The Fortunes, Union Gap and The Ivy League.

Other popular attractions were a sold-out ‘Night with The Royle Family’s Ricky Tomlinson’, Charity Cabaret Nights and Top Rank Revival Nights.

Further details are available from the club on (01782) 541246.

A club that’s BIG on entertainment!!

CONSISTENTLY at the forefront of North Staffordshire clubland, this Stoke-on-Trent venue has SO MUCH to offer members and their guests alike during the New Year of 2012!

Yes, Goldenhill Workingmen’s Club is ‘pulling out all the stops’ to enhance its popularity, thanks to a wide-ranging series of attractions (including, naturally, top-flight live entertainment from a brace of agencies).

Commented Club Secretary, Mick Moran: “Obviously, we’re trying to attract as many customers as possible.”

Acclaimed throughout the City of Stoke-on-Trent for its ‘trend-bucking’ reputation, Goldenhill WMC had the foresight, six years ago, to install a ‘Lounge Lizard’ Club Entertainment System, which offers members and visitors a fascinatingly-diverse choice of ‘touch-screen’ attractions, which includes Race Nights (both horse- and dog-events) , Quiz Nights and perennially-popular karaoke-sessions!

“The system is ideal for karaoke, because we can play any record which anyone in the audience wants, without the need for a disco-operation,” explained Mick, adding: “Also popular with our members is the game, ‘Shoot The Loot’, which is very similar to the well-known TV show,

‘Deal or No Deal’.”The Kidsgrove Road club is, of

course, already acclaimed for its top-class live entertainment each Saturday and Sunday evening, with Liverpool agency, Riverside Entertainments Agency, supplying a wealth of talented acts for the month of January (see advertisement on

facing-page).(February’s

scintillating line-up of live weekend entertainment will be supplied by Coventry-based Mainstream Entertainments).

However, Goldenhill WMC

offers entertainment throughout the week, as well as at weekends, with sequence dancing sessions (plus bingo) each Monday and Thursday evening, while Wednesday night features ultra-popular ‘pay-out’ Bingo sessions.

On Friday nights, the club’s capacious Concert Room is offered for private hire for all-comers (when available), and, on five occasions each year, it plays host to boxing promotions (always “big crowd-pullers”, said Mick Moran), courtesy of local ABA match-organiser, Tommy Lowe.

On Saturday evenings, horse-racing is an additional favourite, alongside the live entertainment.

BINGO REALLY IS AN IMPORTANT ATTRACTION AT THE CLUB, WITH £50 IN PRIZE-MONEY GUARANTEED FOR ALL FULL HOUSES EACH SATURDAY AND SUNDAY EVENING.

“We always offer entertainment on Bank Holidays, and, football fans can enjoy all Premier League games (including Stoke City matches) every week,” stated Mick.

Indeed, lovers of both indoor and outdoor games are well catered for at Goldenhill, which features two, full-sized snooker-tables, whilst the venue’s facilities include a superb bowling-green (located to the rear of the premises), which is the home to several teams and is the venue for important county matches.

In addition to its large Concert Room, Goldenhill WMC comprises a refurbished Lounge; members and guests can enjoy a terrific choice of drinks, including Carling, Worthington and many more (courtesy of local supplier, LWC), served up in friendly fashion by Steward, Mick Allison (a Goldenhill man, who has has been at the club for the past seven months and previously ran The Globe public house), and his bar-staff.

Unusually, the Kidsgrove Road venue offers traditional, ‘hand-pulled’, cask-conditioned brews, including regularly-changing ‘guest beers’.

Even more unusually, it features its own kitchen, providing hot and cold culinary fare at eminently reasonable prices.

“The club is doing well, and, we on the committee, are determined to maintain this progress,” commented Mick Moran, who celebrated his third year inthe post of Club Secretary this month, having previously been President.

Mick is joined on the management committee by Tracy Phillips (President), Paul Fryer (Assistant Secretary), and Alan and Susan Mountford, Jean Morgan, Bill Dale and Sandra Purchase (Committee Members).

Keeping your pet fit & well during the Winter EACH season of the year poses its own threats to the well-being of your pets; accordingly, staff at The Croft Veterinary Clinic have provided a Winter survival guide.

It is inherently obvious that the Winter months can prove a real challenge for many of our creature chums; so, here are a few, well-chosen, seasonal tips on how to keep them fit and well.

OBESITY ALERT! With the nights drawing in, it can be more difficult to find the time to walk your dog, while your cat may prefer to settle down in front of the fire, rather than getting out and about.

Where possible, constant exercise-levels will help to keep you and your pet fit and healthy.

Keep an eye on your pet’s weight and get in touch with the clinic, if he or she is gaining a few, extra pounds (carrying excess weight can have a multitude of adverse effects, including heart-disease and diabetes).

ARTHRITIS ALERT! In addition to checking your pet’s weight, keep an eye out for signs of joint-stiffness.

Limps and difficulty in rising after a rest are both signs of joint-stiffness and pain, which can be worsened by cold weather and also by carrying extra weight.

A prompt check of any such signs is advisable, as it is gives staff the best chance of being able to help affected pets.

RABBIT WATCH! Naturally, the colder weather can be challenging for pets (like rabbits and guinea pigs), which live outside.

It is important to ensure that their hutches are warm, dry and clean

and have plenty of bedding.

Water-bottles should be checked regularly to ensure that they not become frozen!

FLEA ALERT! With Summer sadly just a distant memory, it can be very tempting to lower your guard against these tiny, wingless pests!

However, with modern central-heating , fleas are no longer just the seasonal, Summer problem they used to be.

For optimum flea-control, treatment should be all-year-round: spot-on treatments are ideal for treating your pet, whilst larvicidal house-sprays can be used to prevent fleas developing in your home.

THE CROFT VETERINARY CLINIC

Wishing You A Very Happy New Year

‘Grand’ at The Grapes!!180!! The Grapes public house, in Newchapel, Stoke-on-Trent, hosted a highly-successful darts ‘fun-day’!Staff from fruit and vegetable wholesaler, Freshview Foods, helped to raise £1,000, with proceeds going towards the BBC’s Children in Need Appeal.Event organisers, Paul Johnson and Nikki Dwine, were joined by workers and directors from Freshview Foods, with pub regulars fielding their own team. One Freshview director, Richard Harrison, sponsored some of the players, while business partner, Bill Summerscales, also took part.Joining in the cheque’s presentation was Newcastle Borough Mayor, Councillor Trevor Hambleton.

Revamp will ‘tea’ up pub’s relaunchAN historic pub in the ‘Queen of the Moorlands’ is set to re-open, following a ‘face-lift’.Closed since 2009, The Earl Grey, on Ashbourne Road, Leek, is being refurbished, thanks to new owner, Robert Walker, from Tideswell, Derbyshire.Plans to bulldoze and replace a dilapidated, one-storey extension at the rear of the hostelry, using reclaimed materials to match the rest of the original building. The planned scheme (approved by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council with conditions) will create two, full-time jobs and four, part-time ones.

Historic memorial unveiled by landlady, SueSUE Wainwright, landlady of The White Lion pub at Penkhull, unveiled a marble

plinth in the Stoke-on-Trent village, in front of seventy spectators.Located at the junction of Gresty Street and Honeywall, the plinth marks the entrance to the village, which enjoys an Iron Age fort and Domesday Book histiography, and its unveiling was celebrated by a buffet lunch at the hostelry, which is located opposite the site.It reads: “This spot indicates the entrance to the former Iron Age Fort and the Domesday village of Pinchetel. A former Royal Manor from 1086 to the time of Edward II.”The memorial was co-ordinated by the Penkhull Residents’ Association, and its chairman, local historian, Richard Talbot, commented: “This was a tremendous reception to the unveiling.“The word, Honeywall, means ‘Hill Fortress’, and, in 1906, excavations at that location discovered archaeological evidence to indicate an early road, water channel and wall.“As for the Domesday village, historical documents clearly define the boundaries of the early village.”

Wedding GuideEase the stress of ‘Big Day’ preparations

IT is, indubitably, true that planning for your ‘Big Day’ CAN be both stressful and time-consuming - but it doesn’t have to be!

Firstly, don’t overdo the wedding reception details; so, keep the tables simple and elegant.

Also, choosing a plain, fresh reception will look great and save you cash on those annoyingly-unnecessary, little extra which you won’t really need or use.

If you have paid the wedding venue for cases of wine to go with the wedding breakfast, check how many are actually used; if you have any ‘leftovers’ at the end of the repast, they can be placed behind the bar during the evening, thus saving not

only your own budget but also your guests pounds and pounds.

Instead of buying flowers for both your ceremony and reception, purchase one bulk-load of wedding flowers and use them for both!

After the ceremony, ask a member of staff or a bridesmaid to help move them across to the reception while you are having your photographs taken.

Fourthly, use your wedding cake as dessert to avoid paying for an additional course.

Ask for some jugs of cream to be brought out after the final course; then, dish up the cake!

Some hotel venues will give the bride and groom a complimentary

Negotiate before you book, and, if you’re in the early stages of planning, remember that venues will, often, offer deals on weekday weddings or superstitious dates.

Remember not to ignore the high street for your bridesmaids’ dresses, since there are some gorgeous one available!

If you’re not too worried about having photos of you getting ready or at the evening party, book your wedding photographer by the hour (it will be a lot cheaper than buying a ‘package deal’!
