Research Forum: the Science of Continuous Quality Improvement
St. Elizabeth Hospital, Inc. hikes up efforts in achieving continuous quality improvement through the conduction of scientific studies and research forums. Headed by Erick Von Fredeluces, RN, Research Coordinator, research studies are made possible and regularly per-formed to ensure that the company lives up to its vision and mission in every way possible. In the recent months, SEHI has conducted various investigatory projects that endeavored to yield quality services to clients and resolve conflicts and issues of employee performances. Breakthrough project accomplished by the Research and Development Office this year was entitled “Nursing Care Delivery and Shift Endorsement of SEHI”, the most visible insofar research implementation of the institution which is responsible for the milestone shift of the Nursing Service from functional nursing modality to primary nursing.
Mr. Fredeluces levels up the conduction of research studies by way of a research forum: the presentation of the entire study to the con-cerned bodies and departments- its methodologies, results and recommendations of the researcher. The research assembly serves as the avenue for the spectators to voice out concerns and take part in the improvement advocated by the research findings. According to the research coordinator, opinions and suggestions of the departments and sections involved are significant in coming up with better strategies to innovate systems and policies of the institution.
These recommendations, from the researcher and personnel collated, are then raised to the administration for evaluation and
final decision regarding the feasibility of its implementation in relation to the subject discussed in the study. Indeed, St. Elizabeth Hospital’s conduction of quality improvement research is the best embodiment of the institution’s quality
policy: “committed to provide the highest quality health care” incorporating the art of caring and the science of methodology.

I ntravenous therapy is defined as the parenteral infusion of fluids, electrolytes, blood components,
nutrients or medication to prevent or treat deficiencies or diseases. It is a very common place of therapeutic treatment today. The nurse is typically the professional who is responsible for maintaining, monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of IV therapy. In many nursing practice settings, a great deal of the nurses’ time and professional responsibility revolve around component delivery of IV therapy. Therefore, it is vital that today’s nurses understand the basic principles of IV Therapy.
St. Elizabeth Hospital Inc., in coordination with the
Association of Nursing Service Administrators of the Philippines (ANSAP) conducted a three-day Intravenous Therapy Basic Course on September 11 to 13, 2013. The training was successfully held at Retro Hall Training Center with 61 participants. It was facilitated by the institution’s Nursing Service Office headed by the chief nurse, Janet Alcala, RN.
The basic course involved discussion of pertinent
theories and principles in fluids and electrolyte balance, pharmacology and parenteral drug administration, chemotherapy, blood transfusion, parenteral nutrition and prevention on IV related nosocomial infections. Such topics were intellectually discoursed by the institution’s IV preceptors from the Nursing Service and Corporate Planning Office.
Dexterity in IV therapy procedures of the participants
were honed as they practiced return demonstration and actual IV insertion. The third day event proved well that indeed, in order to make perfect a particular skill, it takes constant practice.
Intravenous Therapy is an important aspect of nursing
profession. Enhancing knowledge and skills while doing intravenous therapy is essential in order to give clients the best possible professional and quality care that they deserve.

A remarkable beginning happened as the Department of
Medicine of St. Elizabeth Hospital Incorporated inaugurated
the Residency Training Program last August 1, 2013 at the Retro
Hall Training Center, SEH Compound, General Santos City.
This is the first three- year Internal Medicine Residency Training
Program of the entire Region 12 which intends to provide
progressive clinical experience, updated didactics, and journal studies
for the residents solely dedicated to Internal Medicine. The program
aims to provide competent, efficient and cost- effective patient care
to the community and to develop professional and skilled internists.
The core trainers of the Department are Dr. Annie Du-Yabut, the
Department Chair- Cardiology; Dr. Michael M. Enriquez, Chief
Training Officer- Cardiology; Dr. Vivien S. Paez, Gastroenterolgy;
Dr. Noel Pingoy, Hematology/Oncology; Dr. Arnelia Bersales-
Masendo, Nephrology; Dr. Emilia Juele Javier, Pulmonology; Dr.
Jolyle Mazo, Cardiology; Dr. Ronald Magbanua, Neurology; Dr.
James Manching, Rheumatology; Analyza Galia, Endocrinology and
Dr. Ruth Peñaflorida, Internal Medicine.
The inauguration was highlighted after the residency trainees were
officially introduced and welcomed. The new residency trainees are
Dr. Cheryl Rose Magan- Hudieres and Dr. Mark S. Bangcaya. To
show their utmost support, the SEH Board of Directors, the
Hospital Administrator, the Medical Department Heads along with
other members of the Medical Staff, heads and supervisors of the
nursing service department, officers of the Corporate Planning
Office attended the said event.
The success of the inauguration on that day was just a beginning
for the new endeavor of the Department of Medicine and for the
Hospital. More “birth pains” and struggle is indeed, anticipated to
make the program successful. However, with the dedication,
commitment and support of the members of the Medicine
Department and the Hospital management, surely it will succeed.
