GVVCVC President Fred’s Chat……………

Hello to all our

members,

Unfortunately for

you & also myself, I

have been requested

by our Editor, to

provide a regular

letter for inclusion in

the GVVCVC

Journal. My first

reaction to this

request was, is this

really necessary?. I

raised the request at our last Committee Meeting asking for

comment & to my surprise & disappointment, the request

was strongly supported.

Following that discussion I can see now the benefit of

such an initiative. We have just a little under 500 Members.

Of these, approximately only 100 or so regularly attend our

Club`s G.Ms. (even less our AGM). Although we hold, on

average, 3 Club Runs per month, these are usually attended

by the same regular bunch of around 50 people. In addition

we find that there is a regular number of around 30 to 40

members who always volunteer to assist with all of the

activities that are required for the Club to provide all of its

members with the Runs, Outings & Activities that our

Committee believes you are looking for.

It is therefore quite obvious that that without our Regular

Journal, provided by our previous Editor Alvin Jenkin &

which has served us so well during his time in the position

that there is no real opportunity for all of our members to be

kept informed about what our Committee are directing their

activities to & also how the thoughts & wishes of our

members are being addressed. We have a replacement for

our Editor ,who has a small team to assist him now that

Alvin is enjoying a rest from the pressure, I hope. The

recent Journal produced by our Editor Paul Barnet indicates

that he has risen to the task & with help from his support

team should be able to meet the challenge.

What would be a great help would be for any of you who

may have a question or an issue to raise, just firstly, speak to

a Committee Member. It may be that other members may

also have the same view. You can see how important it is

therefore that you get your message across. This is not a

criticism of anyone who may be reluctant to speak up.

Instead it is merely an encouragement to enable any of our

less outspoken members to raise their issues on a one to one

basis with one of the Committee members. I am happy to

discuss any matters or concerns with members & I do try to

be approachable. I do also believe that it is my responsibility

to ensure that we, as a Committee, are providing you all

with a Club that is delivering the sort of Club that you want

to be a member of.

Just to clarify a few misconceptions, I need to explain

that your Committee is not there to make decisions on your

behalf. Their function is to follow the objectives of the club

as defined in the Constitution (of which you should all hold

a copy). The Committee consist of 10 Office bearers ;

The President, the Secretary, & the Treasurer as Directors.

In addition there are the Vice President, the Events

Coordinator, the Membership Secretary & 4 additional

Committee Members . Also there are a number of additional

people who are appointed by the Committee to carry out

specific duties.

There are also currently 2 Sub Committees Appointed by

& reporting to the Committee. These are the Functions Sub

Committee, 3 Members & the Club Facilities Committee 5

Members. The Position of Public Officer, held by our long

standing Public Officer Peter Bailey, is appointed by the

Committee. There is a list of Committee Members, Sub

Committee Members & appointed individuals shown on the

second Page of our Bimonthly Journal.

To further Clarify you need to understand that all issues are

managed & actioned by the Committee. Their responsibility

therefore is to manage the affairs of the club & comply with

any Legal Requirements. The Committee cannot make any

final decisions & they are required to Review, Process all

matters & after careful consideration prepare a

Recommendation to be presented to the Members For their

acceptance & approval.

The Sub Committees are required to carry out their

Activities as directed by the Committee & report on their

progress regularly to the Committee. At each point along

the way it is the responsibility of the Committee to advise

the Club Members of the progress to date & also to put any

recommendations to the Members for their approval.

I do hope that this letter has been of value to you & that it

has not been too tiresome to read through. I believe that it

was necessary that you all have an understanding of the

operations of your Club & how your Committee are

committed to ensure that your wishes & issues addressed.

It is my intention to provide you with an update on all of the

issues currently before the Committee at our next G.M. &

from there on I will provide a regular update via the Journal.

Regards your

President

Fred Chapman

Greetings fellow car enthusiasts………………..

My story with vehicles begins at the age of 12 on my

grandfathers farm at Peterborough when my brother and I

resurrected Grandpa/s old 1924 Dodge Tourer as a hotrod to

scream around in and learn to drive. WOW did we have

some fun and also many prangs with trees and not judging

the gateway areas proper?

From this episode the next was motorbikes, BSA =

Triumph =Norton =Yamaha, and even an old Harley that

Grandpa and Grandma used to use (many prangs off of that

as it was so heavy and hard to maneuver)?

As my father owned the BP service station opposite

Maccas on Adelaide Road Gawler south from when I was 14

my car ownership began as I was doing an apprenticeship on

mechanical knowledge and had the opportunity to check out

and test drive up and down Eighth street (without a licence I

must add), police were great blokes then?

At 16, I bought a Terraplane Sedan from a bloke at

Wasleys (doors opened forward) and it was a real fun car as

it was all that parents and I could afford.

The funniest thing with that vehicle was when one night

we were hooning around the town and when we turned at

the end of 12th street to go up over the over way bridge the

nice chick in the passenger seat accidentally crabbed the

door handle (no seat belts) and the door flew open and hit

the light pole and wiped it off. She then moved over next to

me (that was great) and we stopped and went back to pick it

up off the pole, we then went up to Wingnuts (Rawlings)

Servo Willaston and welded it back on.

After working at the BP servo (Dads) I saved up to buy my

real cars a 36 ford Coupe from Ashley Pratt of Willaston,

Wow what a beast and did I ever have fun in that.

We used to go to the drive-in, two in the front and 4 in

the dicky seat in the back (lid shut of course) Cheap night

for those 4, only got caught once. Only twice drove off after

the movie with the speaker still inside the window, Shit it

made a mess of the window and scared the crappe out of us

also?

Next vehicle was an Austin A40 =followed by a zephyr

Sedan (pompoms around the inside of the window and

leopard skin seat covers) and of course a foxtail from the

Arial.

Next came a Ford custom line Twin Spinner, great car but

the coppers did not like the way it sounded and how fast it

went??

Working up in the Yunta area on a Sheep and cattle

station then I also started racing motorbikes and doing stunt

riding around that area. One stunt that did not come off was

when I tried to jump a dam on Wininninie Station and all

went well but when I was in the air half way across the dam

the bloody front wheel fell out and I closed my eyes and

expected the worst summersaulting down the other side and

ended up with a broken leg in two places. (Bloody

Triumphs?)

My mates took me back to the homestead and the boss was

not impressed and said that I was a dickhead and that I

would have to take myself to the doctor?

That night was hell and next morning I drove the ford

custom line down to Peterborough to the hospital (broken

leg looking like a mushroom) and on entering the hospital

gate I wondered how I would get anyone to help so I drove

up to the front door and sat on the horn (which was Colonel

Booggy)? It did not take someone too long to come and get

me?

Then I moved back to Gawler after 4 years up in the

Bush, worked at Roseworthy College (Transport Trainer and

Bus Driver) and worked part time at the Amoco (now BP)

Servo in Murray Street.

I became involved with racing, drag racing and motorcycles,

bought the Service station with my Wife Glenys and

operated that for 16 years successfully. Opened up other

Businesses =Gawler Motorcycles= Gawler Auto

Accessories Shop employing at one time 12 persons.

Cars through that time were many, Holden Kingswood

=VW Sports Station Ghia=Monaro 350 two door =Ford

Tudor coupe =many varied motorcycles (mainly Honda)

=Toyota Land cruisers =and now Ford Maverick Wagon and

two Land cruiser wagons and a RAV 4.

Vintage car at present is a 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe

(awaiting Full restoration) that has only done 38000miles

from California (ladies shopping car).

Thank you Trevor Bellchambers and his team of supporters

and followers in developing the Gawler Vintage and Veteran

car club for all to enjoy as we all do today. WOW what a

success story .

My involvement throughout my life has been very

supportive in this club, organizing two swap meets and was

instrumental in forming the GAWLER ROAD KNIGHTS

CAR CLUB and active in THE GAWLER

MOTORCYCLE CLUB along with the GAWLER BMX

CLUB and

the Short lived GAWLER MOUNTAIN BIKE CLUB.

I have had a great life in this area and look forward to many

more years of enjoying Motoring in any way possible =

bring it on, I am still a rev head==speedway starts up again

in October,

cannot wait.

I'll be seeing

you around,

MURRAY BRIDGE RUN………………………….. Sunday, July 31

We started at Princes Park with a little morning drizzle and glad to

have the sheltered area to the rear alongside of the Train Line to get

together for the start. We welcomed our loyal members all the way

from Ardrossan Mike Mary and Maisey Osborne .

At 0900 we drove along through the hills and turned across through

Mt Pleasant and then down to have our BYO morning tea in good

weather at the Palmer Oval Complex.

After our short break we traveled on to the Rotary Market at Murray

Bridge. The local club Event Director Claude Minge had arranged a

Display area for us on an area within the grounds and this saved us a lot

of time chasing car parks as there was a large crowd there for the market.

After having lunch and a good look around there we then drove down

to the Murray waterfront area where some of the local motor club and the

Riley club came to meet us and brought down their club cars for us to

check out.

Some of us then went to The Serenity Garden Centre on the Mannum

road to have a good look around through this very interesting business.

Our President had a lot of trouble with his Graham Paige and on two

occasions had to be towed to start by two different Mercedes Benz. The

vice President had a busy time there also and sold lots of our Mini Raffle

tickets to the Murray Bridge club members. Good Onya Trun.

I think that most of us enjoyed this outing except maybe for poor Fred and

Noelene. Regards. Brewan.

SPARROW RUN TO GUMERACHA……….….Sunday, August 7 Today 46 members and relatives enjoyed the Sparrow run to Gumeracha Big Rocking Horse

Restaurant.

We went along the scenic road through Deadmans Pass and then up and along the ranges to

Kersbrook where most of us drove on through Chain of Ponds, but some took the Alpine

route up Checkers hill and along to the back of Gumeracha. The weather was good for this

time of the year and we were served a good breakfast there and had a good social time

between us.

Most of us went along a different route back home after having enjoyed the earlier

breakfast Thanks to Corrie for organising this run .

Regards Brewan.

ANNUAL DINNER………. Saturday, August 20

64 members attended this dinner held on the top floor of the new

Greyhound main building .

A two course meal was provided and was served in alternating dishes.

Entertainment was well done by Cheryl and Gavin with their version of

Irish counting. That Gavin has many talents. The President Fred and

Events Director Bruce handed out small prizes to the many helpers

working with Bruce in the Events areas. Fred also spoke about the

Trophies for the most unlucky member on a run, Brian Roberts and the

Award for Classic vehicle restoration Peter Dalton.

Mike Williams was thanked for his management of the Swap

Meet over the last years and Alvin Jenkins for his outstanding

work as Journal Editor.

Thanks to our new committee member and Function

Manager Lorraine East for her organisation of this dinner.

SHED RUN…...Wednesday, August 24

Well today was a blokes day with a total of 56 members on this

run but only a few of the finer sex dared to make it out. However we

sure made use of these women who with Lyn presented a top

Devonshire morning tea at their busy Cheek Ave Motel. Corries was

the first on the Shed list and we were able to have a good look at the

Club Raffle Mini and his many cars. After that up to Trev & Lyns

for a Devonshire morning tea and a check out of their many

interesting vehicles including the Wedding or Doomsday vehicles.

From there across to the Tooth sheds that made most of us feel

inferior with the high level of hospital strength cleanliness of the

sheds adorned with Toranas and a Harley, with a Mini hoisted

above. Peter T's Family Torana

Then on to Lyndoch where we enjoyed a top meal as we almost

overloaded that hotel eating area………………………………

After lunch the girlies checked out the Op Shop and then we drove on

to Sandy Creek to have a look at Piet's classic cars which were mainly

imported from South Africa like him and his family. A great mob to

be sure.

After a good look around there we continued on and visited David

Hardings very interesting sheds where he has 6 standing engines ,a

Ford T coupe ,Customline and a 38 Ford coupe. all in top condition

and tidy as a Vietnam Vet would have it.

I would say that everyone enjoyed this Shed Run and thanks to Trevor

OLD CAR DAY , BETHANY..........................Thursday, September 1

Co-ordinator, June Kent …………Wattle Day,

First day of spring and what a glorious morning for a car run,

the vehicles and their drivers and passengers started to arrive at

Fremont Park Playford at 0900, June and Dave were there to

welcome the participants, the first to arrive as the Elizabeth

Town Centre clock struck nine was as usual Trevor Unsworth,

armed with his freshly cut sprigs of Golden Wattle to give out

to all the participants.

June finally managed to marshal the group together (without

the Voice) as Martin was not joining us this year from Crystal

Brook not so many attendee’s this year, thirty-five in 25

historic vehicles, some coming from Glenelg and beyond, but it

is a working day for most.

Like all good coordinators June ensured that everyone signed

the attendance sheet and received their participation sticker,

also explaining the route we would be taking, ready to move off

at 0930,but where was and Trevor he was missing, apparently

he had found a Golden Wattle tree in the park and was

replenishing his supply of Wattle sprigs for the other

participants who would be meeting us at Bethany (lucky no

Park Rangers around)

Along with the gang of council workers there were also some

spectators from Victoria who admired our cars and when we

left the park they waved us off, they had heard about the

gathering on Jeremy Cordeaux Five aa radio show,(Perhaps we

could invite Jeremy along next year as he is known to own

several collector cars).

We commenced our drive from Elizabeth via the Main North

Road passing along through Munno Para and on to Gawler;

from there we travelled via Sandy Creek where we got a wave

from club member Piet Van Rooyen who was in his front

Garden, on arriving at Lyndoch we joined up with other

participants for morning refreshments from the local cafe and

bakery and the customarily visit to the little boys and girls

rooms.

Proceeding on to Bethany Dave and June being in the slowest

car, their 1945 Tourer Standard Flying 8, brought up the rear,

closely followed by Alan Martin in his Wolseley1500, Alan

claims he thought we were actually flying backwards when too

very large B doubles past in the opposite direction. (June held

on to the soft top hoping not to lose it)

On arrival at Bethany, participants from other clubs and other

like minded old car owners who came out for the day were

greeted by Alvin and his stalwart band of club marshals who

managed to park the cars, Alvin toured around to attempt to

Trevor, Fred and Nolene grab a bite to eat

count the vehicles on display but some members

deliberately interrupted his count , he managed up to 148

but there was more likely 180 as cars were still coming in

after lunch when some others were leaving.

Overall a good friendly gathering and several excellent

cars we had not seen before see you all next year.

With more buyers and less sellers it boded well for our Service Clubs with their food stalls ( our club BBQ team

cooked over 350 snags with many thanks to Lorraine ) as consumers needing food and coffee to sustain them while

swapping cash/ goods or stories and meeting up with old friends or chatting to new ones.

With the wet areas in the grounds reducing our parking areas we were lucky that seller numbers were a bit lighter

than expected.

The swap meet can always be improved and I am sure the new coordinator Brian Sambell would welcome

constructive suggestions on how to improve it going forward.

In closing I thank all the members who helped making the event a success in fact all members who have assisted

over the past 5 years.

The GVV&CVC can be very proud of its swap meet but as a club we can't be complacent as additional State

Government requirements and Local Government road measures will keep us on our toes.

STEAMRANGER RUN…………………… Sunday, September 18th

WOW .. It looks like most of our mob might be Old Train

Buffs with 85 going on this Steamranger Run outing. Most

of us drove to Mt Barker in moderns and boarded the train

there.

Because of the large number of old carriages involved there

was a Diesel Loco helping the old Steamy through the

hills. With the smoke and burnt coal smell this reminded

some of us of earlier times in our youth. We saw many

Kangaroos ,stock animals and old car wrecks in back yards..

The Goolwa Market was in full swing when we arrived at

the station for a break and most of us enjoyed the look around

there. From Goolwa we proceeded along the line to Pt Elliot

which was the oldest public line with steel rails in Australia

(1854) and was originally built to provide an outlet for the

Murray River trade but was extended to Victor Harbor after 7 ships were wrecked

in the harbour.

Victor Harbour was swamped by the Rock and Rollers ,old cars and many

bands. We had lunch there and a good look around before boarding the again for

the returning to Mt Barker arriving there around 6.30pm

I am sure that everyone enjoyed this outing and was another great run

organised by Lorraine and Barry Many thanks to them

MOTORFEST 2016......Wednesday, September 21

On Wednesday the 21st of September the GVV&CVC hosted day 3 of the

2016 Motorfest activities.

Following the traditional get together over morning tea & biscuits the run

was underway from Motorfest Headquarters Glandore at 9:30 am to our

first destination, Highercombe Museum where morning tea was served as

we viewed the many displays of the areas heritage. The run then

proceeded through Upper Hermitage and Snake Gully to Dead Man’s Pass

for a BBQ lunch from our wonderful BBQ trailer with some magnificent

views of the hills & the Gulf along the way.

After the BBQ and viewing of the members cars on display we moved

on through Murray St. to Bruce Fletcher’s Collection of some rare Jaguars

and wooden boats in Willaston.

Our final destination was the She oak Log Museum with a fantastic

collection of stationary engines and farm machinery which many were

started by Bob Ahrens to demonstrate how they operate, some were

operated with petrol & Diesel with the steam units operating on

compressed air. There was also a rare 1928 Nash utility owned by Bob.

69 participants entered the event with several coming from A far a

field as Northern Territory, Queensland, NSW & Victoria. Our Car

Club certainly lived up to our reputation and has received much

congratulation and good comment from many of the participants and

personal praise from the Federation Committee. Much of the praise and

comment is to our Marshals and catering officials who put in a fantastic

effort for the club & hospitality to our quests. Thanks also to the many

members who displayed vehicles at the Pass.

Apologies if I do not mention all the officials as I do not wish to miss

any of you, you all know who you are so give yourself a well deserved

pat on the back for supporting this fantastic event and a job well done.

Some I must mention who go the extra yards are :- David Prest - Run

Organizer, Geoff Francis – Tee Tree Gully Organizer, Lorraine East –

Catering Manager Graham Butler – Jaguar Display at Willaston. Our

Club can be very proud to have so many willing helpers to support these

great events.

Reminder:- Next year’s Motorfest Classic is already in the planning

stages – Please give Trevor Evans all the support he needs for this one

also.

BAY TO BIRDWOOD RUN………………….Sunday September 25th

This year the Bay to Birdwood Run was under many challenges

including heavy rains leading up to the event and a change of route

due to road works on hackney Road.

We formed up on to Barrett Reserve at 6:00 am in our particular

groupings with the veterans at the Start alongside this year’s

celebrated Marque being Packards whom are holding their National

Rally here. GVV&CVC members Mark & Morag Jenkinson were

entered with two Packards.

There were 1000 vehicles entered, 300 short of the 1300 required.

Although we received some slight drizzle on the trip down the

weather held off for the rest of the day and there was a great

opportunity to view the vehicles and catch up with many of the

participants. At 8:30 am the Veterans were flagged off by Glen

Dix followed by the Concours and Vintage vehicles.

I was the lead vintage vehicle not far behind the lead vehicles. The new

route along Cross Rd. & Portrush Rd. was easy being mostly two lane

including the turns at the traffic lights with a great number of spectators

considering the cold conditions. Not long along the Run we found ourselves

up with the lead vehicles and three Police vehicles. Other vehicles were now

passing us but no one game enough to challenge the Police vehicles for the

lead. We decided to remain in third position and the run from Inglewood all

the way to Birdwood developed into a one lane parade. Half of the road near

the Gorge R. intersection had collapsed so if we were using a two lane one

way as in the past the one lane merge would have created more congestion.

After a pleasant journey and without drama we arrived at Birdwood at 10:20

am. and immediately headed to the food and other necessary facilities.

Due to the heavy rains the week before much of the grassed areas were

roped off with the food stalls on the bitumen near the main entrance. Despite

the weather and route changes this run was still a fantastic experience and

loved by the public as shown by their support along the way.

It is our premier event of the year supported by all clubs around Australia

and envied around the world and we should be proud to have it here and call it

ours.

With the Bay to Birdwood being the premier event for us car enthusiasts and

our wonderful club supported by 500 members it is disappointing that only 13

GVV&CVC members participated in this world class event.

Thanks to those who participated in supporting the event and show casing our

great club. They deserve a mention, order of entry:- Trevor Unsworth,

Alec Harris, Anthony Page, Alby Grey, Howard Locking R Geue ,Graham

Ferris , Mark Jenkinson , Morag Jenkinson, John Clifton, Gordon Koch ,

Fred Chapman, G Dunn and Gavin Launer.

Some of our club

enthusiasts were spotted

along the route, thanks

to them for supporting

this magnificent event.

To the Editor,

Greetings Gawler Car Club Members

The 29th Down Under London to Brighton Run for

Veteran vehicles will be conducted on Sunday 30th October

2016. The event will start with vehicles assembling at

London Road Mile End from 9.30am in time for a 10.00am

departure for morning tea at the Combined Car Club

Clubrooms at Glandore. From there it is off to Brighton and

the rest of the Run.

On behalf of the Vintage Sports Car Club I am

endeavouring to contact all past entrants to invite them to

enter this year’s Run. Due to our Club’s fundraising efforts

and some generous sponsors we have been able to keep the

cost of entry at ten dollars, which we understand has been

the case for many years. We will also have larger London

Buns this year; and have put in place steps to ensure that the

London Road start is better organised. Apart from that we

have taken notice of the feedback received after the 2015

Run and are keen to ensure that the “Down Under London

to Brighton” remains an iconic event for Veteran Vehicles

on the South Australian Motoring Calendar.

We would love to have you join us on Sunday 20th

October for the Run. With that in mind I have attached an

Entry form which can be e-mailed, or posted to the Run

Directors. Ian Loader and Rod Wood are the Run

Directors. They will be pleased to answer any questions you

may have. Their contact details are shown below.

The e-mail address for entries is [email protected]

To the Editor,

Dear Car Club Members ,

With Dads ( Rob Macalister) move to Trevu Residential

Care, he’s now got a laptop so he can be in contact again

from his new location…

However, we’ve had to create him a new email address as

no one knew the password of his old one and we had no

other option than to create a new one so please update

your records.

He now has his computer and it is good for him to be

back online!

His mobile phone number hasn’t changed but his home

phone will be disconnected at some point…. But feel free

to call him on his mobile (0407 719 380).

Thanks, Lindy.

To the Editor

Once upon a time …..(a story found by car member

Anthony)…….

A Japanese company (Toyota) and an American company

(General Motors) decided to have a canoe race on the

Missouri River. Both teams practised long and hard to reach

their peak performance before the race.

On the big day, the Japanese won by a mile . The

Americans, very discouraged and depressed, decided to

investigate the reason for the crushing defeat. A

management team made up of senior executives was formed

to investigate and recommend appropriate action. Their

conclusion was the Japanese had 8 people paddling and 1

person steering, while the American team had 7 people

steering and 2 people paddling. Feeling a deeper study

was in order, American management hired a consulting

company and paid them a large amount of money for a

second opinion. They advised, of course, that too many

people were steering the boat, while not enough people were

paddling. Not sure of how to utilize that information, but

wanting to prevent another loss to the Japanese, the rowing

team's management structure was totally reorganized to 4

steering supervisors, 2 area steering superintendents and 1

assistant superintendent steering manager.

They also implemented a new performance system that

would give the 2 people paddling the boat greater incentive

to work harder. It was called the 'Rowing Team Quality First

Program,' with meetings, dinners and free pens for the

paddlers. There was discussion of getting new paddles,

canoes and other equipment, extra vacation days for

practices, and performance bonuses for the managers. The

pension program was trimmed to 'equal the competition' and

some of the resultant savings were channelled into morale

boosting programs and teamwork posters.

The next year the Japanese won by two miles.

Page 16: GAWLER VETERAN VINTAGE & CLASSIC VEHICLE CLUBleopard skin seat covers) and of course a foxtail from the Arial. Next came a Ford custom line Twin Spinner, great car but the coppers

16

Humiliated, the American management team laid off one

paddler, halted development of a new canoe, sold all the

paddles, and cancelled all capital investments for new

equipment. The money saved was distributed to the senior

executives as bonuses.

The next year, try as he might, the lone designated

paddler was unable to even finish the race (having no

paddles), so he was laid off for unacceptable performance,

all canoe equipment was sold and the next year's racing team

was out-sourced to India. Sadly, the End.

Here's something else to think about: GM has spent

the last thirty years moving all its factories out of the US,

claiming they can't make money paying American wages.

TOYOTA has spent the last thirty years building more than

a dozen plants inside the US. The last year's results:

TOYOTA makes 4 billion in profits while GM racked up 9

billion in losses.

GM folks are still scratching their heads, and collecting

bonuses...

IF THIS WEREN'T SO TRUE IT MIGHT BE FUNNY

To the Editor..

To Everyone who helped or displayed cars for our Motorfest

Run on Wednesday 21st September 2016.

THANK YOU! And well done, I think we did the club

proud with a great run for the participants who were mostly

from other clubs and some from interstate.

Every guest seemed to be enjoying themselves and almost

everyone stayed on to the end – 3:30-4:00pm!

I would like to thank everyone who helped personally, but

there were too many to do that.

However, I would especially like to thank Trevor Unsworth

who was not only my mentor while organising the event, but

also a great helper, so thank you very much Trun.

Others who I think need a special mention are, in order of

the events…

· Geoff and Jeanne Boundy who did the whole run

prepared to assist anyone in trouble.

· Geoff Francis, Gill Starks and volunteers at the

Highercombe Museum, special people and a very special

place.

· David Moule for his early advise, and help on the day.

· Gavin Launer and Corrie Wake for tremendouse help

with the Dead Man Pass setup etc.

· Fred Chapman for has help and announcements, it

always looks good when the President of a club addresses

the guests at a function like this.

· Lorraine East. Wow, does she do a mean BBQ? And

thanks to all those who put in the hard yards helping her.

· Bruce Fletcher – gorgeous Jags and Mustangs! Who

would let a bunch of complete unknowns wander around

their property? (Bruce was interstate!)

· Graham and Dorothy Butler who organised and

displayed their own and Bruce’s vehicles (and wooden

water craft!) so beautifully on the day.

· Bob Ahrens and his offsider at the Shea-Oak Log

Museum. What great guys and what a fantastic setup! I

knew an old bush mechanic whose truck broke down once in

the middle of nowhere. He diagnosed a failed condenser. He

pulled the condenser to bits, found the shorted out section,

cut it out and reassembled the condenser. Like a can of

worms the papers wouldn’t go back Wonderful!

Thank you to the many marshals and other helpers (too

many to list), some who stood freezing on corners, but

helped make the day so great. Several participants have

commented on how terrific it was to have directions given by

marshals. Again, thank you all.

Cheers David Prest.

CONDENSERS AND PITTING OF POINTS………..

I have had problems in the past and have put

together this article from a few sources hoping it will be

helpful to club members. A standard tune-up at the local

garage was always points, plugs and condenser. The

condenser does not care if it is 12 or 6 volts. Basically the

only thing that makes a condenser fail is an internal

problem. This is quite common with Chinese parts. If the

condenser and coil are exactly matched, the points will

never burn. If you get a crater in one and a peak on the

other contact it indicates the wrong value condenser.

"The direction in which the tungsten is transferred gives an

indication for correcting the situation. If the tungsten

transfers from the negative to the positive point one or two

corrections may be made. Increase the capacity of the

condenser, shorten the condenser lead, separate high and

low tension leads between the coil and distributor, move

these leads closer to the engine block. If the transfer is from

the positive to negative point, reduce condenser capacity,

move low and high leads closer together and/or away from

Page 17: GAWLER VETERAN VINTAGE & CLASSIC VEHICLE CLUBleopard skin seat covers) and of course a foxtail from the Arial. Next came a Ford custom line Twin Spinner, great car but the coppers

17

the engine block, or lengthen condenser lead." {from a

Delco book}

If you have a Pertronics electronic ignition and coil then you

have no points or condenser.

I knew an old bush mechanic whose truck broke

down once in the middle of nowhere. He diagnosed a failed

condenser. He pulled the condenser to bits, found the

shorted out section, cut it out and reassembled the

condenser. Like a can of worms the papers wouldn’t go back

in the condenser tin, so he wrapped them up with electrical

tape and left them hanging. A very smart mechanic.

Happy motoring, Barry Sweetman

I saw this comment recently on the internet and thought it

was interesting to share. Barry Sweetman……….

Motor runs rough?

I have seen high output coils on older engines tend to make

carbon tracks in the cap, and even on the rotor. Reason, I

surmise, is due to the older engine having more blow by,

which pushes oily vapors up into the distributor, and the

high voltage spark jumping across from rotor to terminals

turns the hydrocarbons into carbon and plates the carbon on

the inside of the cap, and some types of rotors, from the tip

along the side of the rotor. So, when this carbon track gets

built up even, it absorbs and dissipates each spark all around

to all the terminals, which weakens the spark to the plug that

should be firing by itself, as well as firing all the others

weakly out of time, thus the engine will quit running or not

start.

THE STIG IN GAWLER?

By Trevor Bellchambers.

I am a older vehicle enthusiast and have a small

family business, Cars of Class, and I use older Rolls

Royce and Bentley cars for mainly weddings. On

Saturday afternoon, August 13th, I set off in my 1958

RR Silver Cloud 1 for a 3:00 pm. Wedding at

Mawson Lakes. I left my

home in Gawler East, drove down Calton Road and left

into the main street of Gawler. At the end of the street

the road bears right and passes the Shell Service Station.

There were two or three cars stopped at the traffic

lights before the bridge so I applied the brakes to slow

down and stop but the brake pedal went to the floor…

no brakes whatever! I thought ‘I am about to have my

first accident!!!’ My options were very limited and

it’s amazing how fast your mind works in a crisis..

1. Drive into the service station and possibly cause

a major explosion.

Can’t keep the Auctioneer out of Gavin, at the Club auction night held recently raising $459 for the club

Page 18: GAWLER VETERAN VINTAGE & CLASSIC VEHICLE CLUBleopard skin seat covers) and of course a foxtail from the Arial. Next came a Ford custom line Twin Spinner, great car but the coppers

18

2. Go around the stopped cars on their right side

but risk hitting a car head on coming the other

way.

3. Run into the vehicles ahead and risk injuring

myself and other people.

4. Try for the footpath on the left which I did,

angled between two poles, missed the Red Shield

Op Shop sign, dodged a large steel electrical

control box, took a very sharp 90 degree left

turn onto a single one-way road (wrong way)

and finally stopped the car with gears and hand

brake. Thankfully no damage to me, the car or

anybody else.

A friend of my older son Scott who works at

Steinborner’s witnessed the whole incident and rang

Scott to ask if one of my cars had a problem as he had

just seen some very interesting driving. Scott confirmed

that there was a problem but assured him everything

was OK as “ The 73 year old Stig from Gawler East was

in control!”

I was on the way to the wedding 25 minutes

later in a replacement car and everything went very well.

For your interest.. these cars have a rod activated

mechanical servo assist braking system that works very

well, normally.

On 3rd September the boys from the One Tree

Hill chapter of the club ventured to the monthly market

at the institute at One Tree Hill. After carefully setting

up they launched into selling tickets in the club’s

Morris Mini car raffle. The little red car sat pertly at

the kerbside whilst the boys pointed out its virtues and

encouraged the purchase of tickets.

Then the heavens opened up. The rain came with

vengeance and there were cakes, buns and people

getting

a good washing down. The boys decided to call it a

day, not due to the rain but more the lack of patrons.

After all the Morris Mini FLOATS ON FLUID.

To the Editor,

Due to some misunderstanding there has been a

travesty regarding the club BBQ trailer. Some people

think the club paid too much for its construction.

Let us put it straight. No one was paid for their

labour in its construction. Wolfgang Ritter donated

many hours of his time (hundreds of hours) as did

Trevor Norris. Much of this given to the design, (many

people had pictures in their mind but few put it on

paper), going off and sourcing the bits and pieces,

getting and abiding with the many regulations

regarding health and safety (this is not a back yard job

and authorities are tuff on cleanliness etc.) and

listening to the endless amount of advice from our well

meaning club members on how it should be done.

It has been constructed to last and with a

simplicity that any mug can use it. (Future members

might be as smart as us.) It has cost a bit of money but

there are receipts for every stainless steel nut and bolt.

Rather than criticize I think that we should

applaud the great work of Wolfgang Ritter and Trevor

Norris and be thankful that we can afford this great

asset. Member Steve

Towing with a rope,……………………….…a question asked of the Journal. Towing a car with a tow-rope, often as a means of recovering a broken down vehicle, was reasonably common in

years past. It’s still legal, subject to complying with the relevant road rules and regulations, but it’s not

recommended. Exceptions might be moving vehicles a very short distance at low speed, either for safety reasons or

where restricted access (such as some car-parks) means other preferred towing options can’t be immediately or easily

employed.

Depending on vehicle design, particularly the driveline, and the nature of the breakdown, serious vehicle

damage could result from this type of towing. Many vehicles these days will require tilt-tray towing.

Also there are significant safety risks. This could include a lack of power assistance to steering and brakes on

the towed vehicle. Remember relevant road rules specify the towed vehicle’s brakes and steering must be in working

order and the vehicle can only be towed if safe to do so.

Australian Road Rules also specify certain requirements for the drivers of the vehicles, lighting requirements,

distances between vehicles, and use of warning flags/lights on tow lines. Vehicle towing mass limits for the vehicle

performing the tow also apply.

The following is an extract from Transport Operations (Road Use Management—Road Rules) Regulation 2009

Towing a vehicle at night or in hazardous weather conditions A driver must not tow a vehicle at night, or in hazardous weather conditions causing reduced visibility, unless—

(a) if the towed vehicle is being towed from the front of the vehicle—

(i) the tail lights of the vehicle are operating effectively and are clearly visible; or

(ii) the vehicle has portable rear lights that are operating; or

(b) if the towed vehicle is being towed from the rear of the vehicle—the vehicle has portable rear lights that are

operating.

Keeping control of a vehicle being towed The driver of a motor vehicle must not tow another motor vehicle unless—

(a) either—

(i) the driver can control the movement of the towed vehicle; or

(ii) the brakes and steering of the towed vehicle are in working order and a person who is licensed to drive the

towed vehicle is sitting in the driver’s seat of the towed vehicle, and is in control of its brakes and steering; and

(b) it is safe to tow the towed vehicle.

Registration and use of Historic Vehicles under The Log Book System

Preamble The system of historic registration of qualifying vehicles in S.A. is an excellent system that promotes the use

of Historic Vehicles by Club Members in the enjoyment of their hobby. As, Historic Registration is only available to members

of a recognized Club then it is the expectation of the Club that Members will use a small portion of the logged outings to

participate in some Club Activities using their Historic Registered Vehicles.

Important Your Log Book must be signed each year by 30 June by one of the club registrars. It is your responsibility to

present your Log Book, current registration, Statutory Declaration and membership receipt.

Fees The membership fee is due by 1st July every year. Renewals shall be on the prescribed renewal form which is

posted in April to all financial members. Membership will cease if the membership fee remains unpaid thirty days after

the due date. The Committee may re-admit the person upon payment of the joining fee plus the outstanding membership fee.
