Managing Director’s Corner

2017 has been an exciting and fast paced year so far for all of us at The Club at Reunion Resort with May 17th being extra special! On May 17th a small intimate ceremony was held with the Reunion Club’s Advisory Board of Governors members and their spouses to commemorate the official groundbreaking for the Reunion Club’s new Nicklaus Golf Course Clubhouse. Site preparation is already underway and completion is planned for Fall 2018. Once we are closer to an actual completion date, invitations for our Nicklaus Clubhouse Grande Opening Celebration will be sent to all our Reunion Club members.

Also on the evening of May 17th at the Reunion Club’s Monthly Member/Manager Reception we had guest speakers from Encore Capital Management, Lubert-Adler Real Estate Funds, and Salamander Hotels & Resorts to give updates on happenings around the Reunion Community.

After providing updates on recent projects completed and underway, such as new dining furniture for Eleven restaurant, new restroom facilities for our Grande Pavilion event venue, new decorative lagoon fountain at Palmer course between holes 7 & 8, installation of two Pickle Ball courts at the Tennis Centre, two Bocce Ball courts at the Cove, golf course bridge repairs, new chaise lounges & cocktail tables for our Water Park, and Lobby Sushi Bar expansion, I has the pleasure of introducing our first guest speaker.

Neil Eisner, Managing Director, Encore Capital Management, is the new liaison with Encore for all Encore developments at Reunion. Since Mr. Eisner’s increased involvement at Reunion, some of the Bear’s Den Club development plan has been revised resulting in an increase in the quality and price of the homes affiliated with that community, and there are no longer plans to build a separate Bear’s Den Clubhouse. Mr. Eisner also fielded some questions from Reunion Club members about future plans for other property within Reunion owned by Encore. As Encore’s development plans are not finalized at this point, additional information will be available in the coming months as development plans become more firm.

Next, Stuart Margulies, Managing Partner, Lubert-Adler Real Estate Funds, announced the Groundbreaking event hosted earlier in the day and unveiled artist renderings of the new Nicklaus Golf Course Clubhouse for our Club members to view for the first time. Mr. Margulies noted that site preparations will soon be underway followed by the vertical construction of the facility with a planned completion date target of Fall 2018.

Both Mr. Margulies and Mr. Eisner stressed a renewed spirit of cooperation and teamwork between Encore and Lubert-Adler in order to facilitate moving development projects forward at Reunion for the benefit of the Reunion community.

Finally, Prem Devadas, President, Salamander Hotels & Resorts, spoke about the design and features of the new Nicklaus Clubhouse. The Clubhouse will have unparalleled views of the Nicklaus 18th fairway & green, a Sports Bar style restaurant & bar, a fitness center that will overlook the 18th green, men’s & ladies locker rooms with showers, and a beautiful Golf Pro Shop with retail apparel. Mr. Devadas also reiterated that work continues on the potential for a new hotel & meeting space expansion project that was announced about a year ago, and noted that the program could include a new luxury Spa, Club member dedicated spaces, a state of the art fitness center, Watson & Palmer Golf Pro Shop, Clubhouse restaurant, and a two level parking structure to resolve parking concerns. Additional details and information will be forthcoming as these plans evolve during the next several months.

The future is very bright for The Club at Reunion Resort and I hope you are all as excited as I am to see our ongoing improvements!

Sincerely,

CARLTON W. GRANT, CHA Managing Director, Reunion Resort & Club

If you’ve ever been playing doubles and feel like your opponents are just killing you with their shots and returns, there is something that you can do.Doubles is a very interesting game because even though you have an additional person on your side to help you cover the court, it also means that now your opponents can hit more angles because the court is 9’ wider (the alleys).

One simple thing that you can do in order to eliminate some of that court is to serve down the “T”. The T is the middle service box area where the center service line meets the service line, creating a T.

Why does hitting this area eliminate court? Basically it comes down to geometry. The wider you hit a serve, or any shot for that matter, the more court you give your opponent to hit to on your side. Angles create angles! If you serve out wide, then not only are you giving them more of an angle cross court, but you are also giving them a easier down the line shot, one that can literally be hit around your net player.

Another advantage to serving down the T is the fact that you will get your net player more involved in the point. Balls will be traveling more down the middle of the court, enabling them to be more aggressive and stick their nose out to pick the returns off.

Just remember, if you want to be a more effective doubles player, the “T” is the key.
