We had a great pot luck dinner and music Gathering in Septem-ber at St. Matthews UMC. I am sorry if you missed it, but on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 5:30 PM, we will have the 4th Day dinner for the new Pilgrims from the October walks. The dinner will be held at Paradise Valley UMC. We invite the Community to come, bring a dish, and celebrate the newest members of our Community. I know this is new, but it is very successful in other places in AZ and this way everyone who wants to come, is included. We urge the sponsors to bring their Pilgrims and extra food for them, and for the team from each of the past walks to make a special effort to attend. The Pilgrims love to see all of you again. A little girl walked to and from school daily. Though the weather that morning was question-

able and clouds were forming, she made her daily

trek to the elementary school. As the afternoon

progressed, the winds whipped up, along with lightning.

The mother of the little girl felt concerned that her daughter

would be frightened as she walked home from school and

she feared the electrical storm might harm her child. Full of

concern, the mother quickly got into her car and drove along

the route to her child's school. As she did, she saw her little

girl walking along. At each flash of lightning, the child

would stop, look up, and smile. Another and another flash of

lighting followed quickly and with each, the little girl would

look at the streak of light and smile.

When the mother's car drew up beside the child, she lowered

the window and called to her, “What are you doing?”

The child answered, “I am trying to look pretty because God

keeps taking my picture.”

Pre-Emmaus, anyone?

Have you ever wondered what the Pre-Emmaus committee does? Well, we are charged with trying to share what Emmaus is all about with anyone who is interested in attending a weekend. We will go to

any church or community to make a presentation on the walk to Emmaus. The Upper Room has produced a 10-minute DVD that explains the pur-pose of Emmaus extremely well. The Discernment Process

Have you ever wondered how Lay Directors or As-

sistant Lay Directors are chosen for a team? We

have been asked that by quite a few people and we

want to share how this happens. It is through a proc-

ess known as spiritual discernment.

Around 13 months before a scheduled Walk, each

member of the Board of Directors of the Arizona

Walk to Emmaus is given a list of those persons who

are eligible to serve as a Lay Director. To qualify, a

community member needs to have served on one

cook team, one talk team, and twice as an Assistant

Lay Director. This is the minimum requirement, and

it is rare for someone to be discerned with only the

minimum numbers satisfied. After receiving the list,

each Board member is asked to prayerfully seek

God’s will in choosing six people. The names se-

lected are sent to the Community Lay Director in the

order of preference. The Community Lay Director

tallies the results and then shares this at the next

Board meeting. The Board discusses the results and

approves the choice of Lay Director.

A similar process is used for the Assistant Lay Di-

rectors. The minimum requirements are service on

one cook team and one talk team. Each Board mem-

ber prayerfully discerns six persons who have served

as an Assistant Lay Director before and six persons

who have not served in that position previously.

The results are sent to the Community Lay Director,

who tallies the results and shares this at the next

Lay Director prayerfully discerns two from each of these

lists to serve as his/her Assistant Lay Directors.

It is important to see that each Board member wraps this

entire process in prayer every step of the way. You have

heard that Emmaus floats on a sea of prayer, and so does the

process of discernment.
