APRIL MEETING, ETC,WED. APR 29th TIFFANY'S SALOON

by Bill O'Connell

The April meeting is also the SpringSocial. If you have not yet sent Larry andCheryl your money, you better get on thestick. For directions etc, see Larry'sarticle.

Many thanks to Jeff and Steve Okun forthe March meeting. We had over 60 peoplethere to leam how these guys perform theirmagic without mirrors. They used a 1986black 944 as the goat and the differencewas pretty astounding. Now we know whathas to be done with spring here.

PRESIDENT S MESSAGEby AL ANDERSON

By now we have shaken out thewinter blues and are lookingforward to the spring and summerfestivities of our club. Watch DerGasser for our socials, our carwash, Ralleys, autocross and trackevents. Let's every one join in,we have something for everyone!

I am happy to announce thatRichard Van zijl has taken over astech chairman, and Rich Benn is oursafety chairman.

I recently attended the Zone 2Presidents meeting hosted by AllenFriedman (our Zone 2 Rep). Amongthe subjects discussed were lessemphsis on alcoholic beverages atclub functions and safety at ourtrack and autocross events. Our

events have always been safe andnow more than ever we must stress

safety. Also, the people atNational are very region-orientedand are eager to attend a specialclub event or just hear from usabout a region problem. Allen isworking on a Zone 2 news letter tokeep us abreast of other happeningswithin the Zone. The meeting washeld at the Friedman's home inRe'ston, Maryland on Saturdayfollowed by a swap meet on Sunday. It was cold...we even had a snowstorm for the ride home.

Boy, I'm glad winter is over!

POCONO DRIVERS ED Paul K. Johnston

Pocono Raceway was the locationof Riesentoter•s first drivereducation event of 1987 on FridayApril 10th. Despite slightlychilly temperatures early in themorning/ sunny skies soon warmedthings up for the ninety drivers inattendance. Der Gasser's Editor(thats me) even got permission totake off work for a day to attendhis first ever driving event.

While air shifting Al Holberts962 from the comfort of your livingroom chair may be as close as mostpeople would care to get toappreciating the capabilities oftheir Porsche, there were 21 firsttimers finding out what the otherseventy already knew - this is fun.It is also and more importantly

educational. If you think thequickest way around a corner is toturn the wheel and follow the whiteline, you would probably learnsomething at one of these events. And although you're not supposed todrive at maximum speed in dailydriving^ (learned something alreadydidn't you) if you've ever been onan unfamiliar road late at nightand suddenly found a curve and atree where they weren't supposed tobe, having good control of your carin a corner can be real helpful.

As Bob Lamb, our competition

chairman pointed out^ the otherprimary concern of all drivingevents is safety. This is not arace and you don't have to go anyfaster than you feel capable of.All drivers are assigned aninstructor who rides with them

until they have the experience tohandle the car on their own.Riesentoters instructors, under theable direction of Don Galbraith, all have a great deal of experienceand deserve a lot of credit fortheir patience and effort. Myinstructor for the day was RichardVan zijl who did a terrific job ofhelping me get the most out of myfirst event.

My only minor mishap of the daywas caused by a rare occurrence inwhich a sudden shift in the earthscrust causes a curve to suddenlybecome tighter, causing ones car toquickly change direction. Sinceeveryone else chose to complete thelap going forward and not backwardI decided to stop, change directionand go forward again. Although I'mstill awaiting seismographicconfirmation of this event^it seemsto be the only plausibleexplanation for what happened.

If you would like to learn moreabout driving your Porsche and havefun doing it, give one of the trackevents or autocross events a try.

"We'll make your carlook like It did

the day you bought it."

We hand wash and detail cars and don't missa thing. We even clean the doorjams. Iusemy wife's Q-Tips" to scour the air conditioningvents. When we're finished there shouldn'tbe a mark on the car. Most of my customersare In awe. The restare ecstatic.
