“Fish Room Setup and Breeding Techniques“
Born in Buffalo, NY, raised in Richmond, VA,
currently resides in Hudson, OH.
Have kept busy raising five children for the past 30
years.
Have worked in the surgical industry for 34 years.
Currently work with Medistim, USA.
Have been keeping fish for 46 years.
Degree in Biology from the University of Richmond, Richmond, VA.
Currently running over 200 tanks. Using PVC piping, 3 linear pumps and Python to clean.
Raises and breeds numerous old and new world cichlids. Cichlids from Madagascar, West Africa, Lake
Malawi, Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika, Central America, South America. Also raises many species of catfish,
rainbows and livebearers from all over the world.
Have set up aquariums and lectured at various schools in Northeast Ohio.
Participated in several collecting trips, in multiple states, for native fishes.
Board member of the Ohio Cichlid Association, member of the Medina County Aquarium Society,
Northeast Ohio Fish Club, Youngstown Area Tropical Fish Society, American Cichlid Association.
Ohio Cichlid Association, former “Bowl Show Chairman,” current “Webmaster.”
Awarded the American Cichlid Association 2011 “Spawn of the Year.”
Have introduced numerous endangered (CARES) species to area hobbyists.
Started in the fish hobby when I was 9 years old. My parents would take me to Woolworths and Roses to
look at their aquariums. I kept a tank with black mollies and another tank with turtles. I was fascinated by
livebearers. I learned three valuable lessons: 1) Don’t trust an angelfish with mollies. 2) Never fully clean
the tank & rocks with bleach and replace all filter material at the same time. 3) When keeping newts,
make certain to have a secure top. Unless you want to find a French fried newt at a later date.
Other hobbies include: playing tournament tennis, playing guitar, member of the Midwest
Cactus and Succulent Society, raising orchids.

Speaker’s Bio
www.neo-fish.com
Hey Gang,
Again this month we will be having another great speaker in Gary Mendez. He will be speaking about his fish
room and breeding techniques. Gary is one of the nicest people in the fish hobby and someone you will hate
bidding against at auctions. His talk will be worth seeing and listening to. Plan on attending as he will answer
many of the questions many of you have wondered about.
Also this month will be the last monthly meeting before our 1st auction. This will be the meeting where we
look for volunteers to help. Presently we have 108 members and we need a lot of you to help run bags,
check in fish, setup, take down and insure that all members have an opportunity to enjoy the day. If you’re
not sure about helping since you don’t know how an auction works, we will be glad to help and show you.
We need as many members as possible to be there and help.
Just like every other club, an auction is that clubs time to shine, and I am sure like other clubs our members
will step up to help make our auction a success.
Lastly, as most of you who attend our meetings, see more and more members and new members each and
every month. I want to take this time and thank each and every one of you for spreading the word about our
club to people. Yes, it has only been two years and those of you who helped start the club see the club
growing, the speakers better and more opportunities for everyone, from quarterly fish buys, member group
buys, the Kens' Fish order and other things the club is doing for its members. The club will continue to do
these things and hopefully continue to grow. We need each and every one of you to insure it does.
Remember, No Smoking on Church grounds or littering of cigarette butt on nearby properties.
I look forward to seeing everyone this Friday and again on March 15th for our club auction.
See you this weekend.

President’s Message
www.neo-fish.com
On January 17, 2015 at 7:00PM the NEOfish board convened.
Present were Dan Ritter, John Chapek, Bill Bilski, Debbie King, Rich Grassnig,
George Hollister, and Janice Bilski.
First topic of discussion that was brought to discussion was a quarterly
fish raffle of rare fish. The board agreed to have a quarterly buy of
rare fish for members only.
Second topic of discussion was a buy of sponges and canister filters.
The board agreed on a buy of sponges by club members, and then the
following month would be a buy of canister filters also purchased by
club members.
Dan Ritter brought up a event that was brought to the board by Ken
Walker. A 2 day event that would be planned for 2016- Catfish and Pleco
Event with speakers an a auction with rare catfish tied into a regular
auction. The board agreed to further pursue the idea. More to come on this.
Third topic was the Bowl Show changes. Fish bucks were eliminated along
with the point system and quarterly 1st place winners. The board agreed
to place the following point system in place: 1st place 3 points, 2nd
place 2 points and 3rd place 1 point. The board also agreed to install a
dollar amount i.e.: $3.00 1st place, $2.00 2nd place and $1.00 3rd place.
All cash prizes will be handed out in December.
Fourth topic was a club purchase of a microphone. John Chapek was going
to look into prices and get back to the board at the next meeting.
Fifth topic was Debbie King asked to order shirts for the auction and
the board approved it.
The last topic brought up by George Hollister was how to advertise the
club resulting in reaching all areas in Ohio. The President, Dan Ritter,
tabled the topic for next months board meeting asking all board member
to think about ideas to further broaden the range of advertising the club.

The Northeast Ohio Fish Club (fish) is an all species Fish club
in Northeast Ohio. We pride ourselves in being a progressive club offering all our members not only the
normal fish club programs, but others like individual e-mail addresses, club member websites, spawning
con-tests, aquarium decorating contests workshops, road trips and more. Our goal is to make every
meeting exciting, educational and leaving you with the feeling that you can’t wait until the next meeting.
Look at our website and see if this club isn’t the club you have been looking for. If you already belong to a
club, that’s okay, think about making us your second club and come enjoy the fun.
Both www.neo-fish.org and www.neo-fish.com show the same website.
As always, the Northeast Ohio Fish Club (NEOfish)
holds monthly meetings in Independence, Ohio on the 3rd Friday of every month. Meetings are at:
Independence United Methodist Church
6615 Brecksville Road
Independence, OH 44131
There is no smoking on Church Grounds or littering of cigarette butts on nearby properties.
8:00p.m. to 10:00p.m. (Christmas Party starts at 7:00p.m.)
Everyone interested is invited to attend. NEOfish is an all species club, such as Betta, Guppies, Tetras,
Barbs, Cichlids etc. We will look to the attendees to pick out a name for the new club. Current club
members are welcome to join a second club.
The Board meets before the general meeting at 7:00p.m. at the church as well. Even though you’re not on
the board, your are still welcome to sit in on the meeting. You would not have a vote but you certainly
could share some input. Per our Constitution and By-Laws, this is also the appropriate time and place to
air any concerns about the club. It would be helpful to first contact a board member to discuss the issue
but if you feel that the whole board needs to hear it then feel free to attend.

Now, about ME. I am new to this club, not having yet renewed for the first time. I have been a member
of 3 fish clubs in the past 10 years. They are Medina, Lorain and Cleveland aquarium societies. I've had
guppies, bettas(bred these), catfish and loaches since I was in middle school. After college I got into
cichlids-Discus, angels, labs, zebras etc. I also had about 50 different types of plecos. I also have shrimp,
snails and such. All my tanks are planted. My tanks range in size from a betta cube(Kyleighs), a few small
tanks, a couple 40's and a couple over 100 gallons.
My daughter Kyleigh joined most of my current clubs as well. She is new to the Bowl Show each
month. If you need to contact her, please e-mail me. She is 9 and does not yet have her own account.

Committee Announcements (cont.) Breeder Award
Program (BAP)
Well, January was not a disappointment we
had 43 spawns turned in and a there were a good number of NEW to the program fish
turned in. We also had a new member DAVE HEARN WELCOME!!!
Ok now I have some things to address. First of all the
size issue. Most of the fish were of acceptable size but a few were not. This is the final warning they need to be
1 INCH unless it is a fish that matures at 1 inch or less. I will never be standing there with a ruler but there
were some fish turned in that were unacceptable. The next is the number in the bag...
The purpose of the program is to promote breeding.
There are supposed to be at least 6 fish in the bag. I know there is a reference in the BAP Guidelines that says 3 to 6. Bags of 3 fry are only acceptable for fish
with higher POINT VALUES in other words 20 point fish. The reason for this is to provide the buyer with a
chance to obtain enough fry to almost guarantee a pair or small breeding group. I urge you to bring 6 fry even
on the higher 20 point fish for that reason. It is just my opinion and mind set but I will usually pass up a bag of 3
fry because if you buy them and then lose 1 your chances of a pair are much slimmer. I will also spend
more money on 6.
I will accept 5 fry, I get at least one person every few months that will set aside 6 fry for BAP and will lose
one right before the meeting. Ok I can live with 5 in those cases unless of course everyone begins to show
up with 5 fry in the bag. One final issue I would like to address and this is not
posted anywhere yet but will be in the future. I will give you the option of opting out of the BAP auction if you
bring in 6 fry for inspection and bring an article for in-clusion in the bulletin. This is really intended for those
fish you worked hard to breed and have lots of money invested in. I will be expecting something substantial
though not just a few short paragraphs to try and get you by. Photos of your own would be a plus!!! I get
it you spent $300.00 on your breeders and 1 inch fry are selling for $20.00 each and you don't
want to give them away.
The final thought. We are supposed to be sharing knowledge here, write an
article.
Cheers, John

Refreshment Committee
I hope that everyone enjoyed the refreshments at the January meeting. I am trying to do some healthier snacks
because most people choose to lose weight or eat healthier for their New Year’s resolution. Donations col-
lected last month for refreshments were $4.51. Thanks to those who contributed. You can make cash dona-
tions or bring something to share. Anything is appreciated.
Next month for the March 15th auction, I would like to start the day by serving breakfast items and see how
that works out. From all the auctions I have been to, the breakfast items are usually muffins and donuts. Below
I will have the food menu, so that everyone can plan what they want to eat. I hope at this auction to see more
people at the refreshment counter and less fast food bags. I will still need a couple extra sets of hands to help
out as well. Please let me know if you can volunteer to help.
