Highlights of the April Meeting

Mark Steele welcomed meeting attendees. Ron Alto led the Pledge of Allegiance. Mark an-nounced the Club members total contributions to the Scholarship Fund is now just under $8500.

Our featured speaker was Laurie Murphy, a 17 year volunteer with Guide Dogs of the Desert, was our primary speaker, joined by 3 other volun-teers, 3 black Labrador Retrievers and 1 standard poodle. Guide Dogs of the Desert, a 501-c3 or-ganization, custom trains guide dogs for the blind and visually impaired. A yearly calendar is one source of funds.

In addition to training, they also have an in-house breeding program. Dogs are selected for both brains and temperament. Most are Labs but some poodles are used as they are smaller and non-allergenic.

The volunteers at the meeting were all puppy raisers. Puppy raisers must apply to be selected to the program. Puppies are between 8-12 weeks old and 8-12 weeks are required to train each puppy. The puppies must be medically sound and housebroken, and the trainers are responsible for teaching basic obedience, house manners, and socializations at grocery stores, restaurants, pub-lic transit etc. Dogs are never fed by hand – only from bowls.

The school, located in Palm Springs, CA, owns

the dogs throughout training. After puppy training, the dogs go to California for an ad-dition 3-9 months learning how to pull on harness, deal with elevation changes, traffic, overhangs, etc. to be fully capable of provid-ing the required guidance for their eventual owner. Some dogs are not suitable for guide work but there are 3-5 partner organization that will train those dogs for other tasks.

Upon completion of training, the dogs are paired with a visually impaired person based on application data that facilitates matching the person with the dog. Potential new own-ers undergo 28 days of training with a 40% graduation rate. There is ongoing support after graduation.

There are about 300 active dogs throughout the US and internationally. Current waiting list for dogs is between 50 and 75. 100 pup-pies are currently being raised and trained. And there are 30 breeder dogs in the pro-gram.

Interested in being a puppy raiser? More in-fo at; www.guidedogsofthedesert.org/our-programs/canine-program/

The 50/50 drawings were won by Jim Hoffman and Jay Westerhausen.

President’s Column

It was good to see many of you at the April meeting and we enjoyed hearing Lori Murphy discuss the Guide Dogs of the Desert organization. We also enjoyed the 4 dogs that Lori and 3 other vol-unteers brought. It was also great to see the 40 Members and friends who attended the Spring Picnic. Next meetig we will be hearing from Brian Anton, a retired Southwest Airlines pilot. Bri-an spent nearly 33 years with Southwest, over 30 years as a Captain. It should be informative and I hope many of you will be there. If you have a subject you would like presented at the monthly meeting please let Dolf, me or a board member know.

Your Board continues to work on the future of the club. During the month of March we were able to get a Treasurer. Joan Schenamsgruber has agreed to take on the Treasurer duties and I am will-ing to be Secretary. This is pending a vote of the membership at the May meeting. Our thanks go to Glenn Orgeron for serving as our Treasurer this past year. Thanks Glenn! We still need someone to step up and be willing to serve as club President! Also, the Board is considering a name change for the club. In order to help recent retirees searching the web find us, the Board be-lieves that the name Honeywell needs to be in the club name. The Board is considering changing the name to Honeywell-Garrett Retirees Club of Arizona. No timing has been set and your feed-back would be appreciated.

Early heads up, Tim Mahoney, President of Honeywell Aerospace, will be our presenter for the October 2

nd meeting.

Our club has many people who work behind the scenes to keep our club functioning and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mike Peterson for all the work he does to get this newsletter distributed electronically. Mike maintains our website and sends out the electronic newsletter each month. In addition, Bob and Diane Recenberger set up the refreshments for each meeting and Diane Bennett arranges our Spring Picnic and Christmas luncheon. Also, Stu Mitnik puts to-gether the monthly club newsletter and our club roster. Thank you Mike, Bob, Diane, Diane and Stu!

I want to wish you all a very safe summer and I look forward to seeing many of you in September! Speaking of September, we will have a presentation by the principal of Fountain Hills High School addressing active shooter protocol. I look forward to seeing it!

This is my last column as your President. It has been my honor to serve as your President the past 3 years and I want to thank all for your support. I want to wish you all a very safe summer and I look forward to seeing many of you in September! Speaking of September, we will have a presentation by the principal of Fountain Hills High School addressing active shooter protocol. I look forward to seeing it!

Mark Steele, President

Spring Picnic

Forty (40) Club members, guests and friends attended the pot luck at

McCormack-Stillman Train Park. Winds were gusting but everyone enjoyed

the hamburgers, hot dogs and pot luck dishes with gusto.

50/50 drawings were won by Loenary Gartner and Juanita Barreras. The Triv-

ial Pursuit prizes were won by Stu Mitnik, Carol Pearson and Joe Baczynski.

May 1 Meeting – Former Pilot – Southwest Airlines

Brian Anton, a retired Southwest Airlines pilot, joined the USAF in 1973 and, after training in Del Rio Tx, flew C-141s for 3 years including the 1975 evacuation of Saigan. Subsequently he flew C-5As for 4 years, including a 21 hour flight from McClellan AFB to Kenya with 8 fighters in the cargo area and one of the last flights to Tehran prior to the disposition of the Shah.

In 1981 he was offered a job at Southwest Airlines where he remained for nearly 33 years. He was a Captain for over 30 of those years until his mandatory retirement at age 65.

Once again the popularity of the scholarship program has increased this year. Applications of next year are currently being reviewed. Thank you to the Garrett and Honeywell Retiree clubs as well as Honeywell International for their generous donations. The majority of the yearly total available funds come from contributions by individual members of the Garrett and Honeywell Retiree clubs. All of you who gave are making a difference in the lives of these deserving recipients.

Cost of a college education has been increasing yearly and our number of valid applicants has increased from 1 at program start to 12 for this year. So far, we have been able to award each of the qualified applicants with at least $1,000. Continued awards of this modest amount for each applicant will likely be impossible unless we can increase contributions. Please review your charitable contributions and seriously consider adding this Scholarship Program to your list of worthy causes. The Scholarship Program is qualified as a 501(c)(3), so donations should be tax deductible (check with your tax advisor). Please remember, students receiving these benefits are all family members of retired Honeywell and Garrett employees. By giving to this program, you will be directly helping the friends and family members of people you worked with for years.
