President’s Award

Many of us were teary-eyed when our President,

Barbara Knuff, called upon Theresa Cullum to

accept the president’s Award at the AGM in

November. Theresa has served as the Society

secretary for many years and as Barbara’s right

hand this past year. Whether sitting on

committees, co-chairing, as President or member,

Theresa has contributed to every aspect of our

society’s endeavours. Her dedication

appreciated by fellow board members and the

society.

Introducing Our Guest Speaker

Smart Greens is a new ‘container farm’ located at 3369 Regional Rd 15, in Chelmsford. Its

owners - Erin Rowe and Steph Lanteigne - believe indoor, contained farming is the future of

northern food production.

“Smart Greens was founded by business partners Eric Amyot and Eric Bergeron in Cornwall in

2014. They started out with a refurbished shipping container, using hydroponics and LED lighting

to create a climate-controlled environment that reduces growing hazards, such as pests and

harsh weather… Plants are cultivated from seed and then transplanted into vertical growing

towers, which allows the farmers to grow up to 4,000 plants in just 400 square feet of space. The

amount of water, nutrients, and light are all controlled by a programmable computerized

system.” Northern Ontario Business – April 2017

Erin is a teacher and Steph has degrees in biology and applied linguistics. They explored the

idea of container farming while planning a return home to Canada after spending 12 years

teaching English in South Korea. They purchased property in Chelmsford and Smart Greens-

Sudbury became one of six container farms in the Smart

Greens network and the first in Northern Ontario.

Smart Greens can grow its produce year-round…even in

Northern Ontario winters…and has been selling its

produce through local businesses and at Farmers

Markets since 2017.

Erin will tell us more about this interesting gardening

technique at our meeting on January 27, 2019 at 2:00

p.m. Don’t forget that we are no longer meeting in the

CNIB auditorium. All of our meetings will be held at

Parkside Centre on Durham Street in 2019.

General Meeting - Sunday, January 27 at Parkside Older Adult Centre, Durham Street

Refreshments at 1:15 pm… Meeting begins at 2:00. Guest Speakers: Erin Rowe and Steph Lanteigne - “Smart Greens”

PRESIDENT’S REPORT – A Year in Review

Every year at this time we take a look back at the past twelve months of Sudbury Horticultural Society

events and activities.

In January 2018, our new Board of Directors and Officers, elected at the AGM in November, were installed

by our Assistant District Director, Donna Butson. Many thanks to all who chose to serve.

Also in January was the Presentation of Awards to winning participants of the 2017 horticultural shows.

Three shows were organized – in May, at the Gardening Festival, and in August and November at our

General Meetings. Thanks to all who volunteered and who entered.

Eight General Meetings were held, each with a full programme. This included speakers Paulette

Macdonald (4-H Club), Sarah Woods (Watersheds), Jennifer Babin-Fenske (Pollinators), Colette Theriault

(Orchids), Pat Marcotte (NOAFEM – Northern Ontario Agri-Food Education and Marketing), Gabby Nichols

(Invasive Plants), and Jessica Sinka (Air Plants). The Northern Brass Choir agreed to entertain us in

November. Some other features of our General Meetings were tasty refreshments, White Elephant Sale,

Prize Draws, and mini presentations on topics of interest.

A number of Special Events were held. A joint venture with community partners, Seedy Saturday was held

March 3rd.

The hugely popular and successful Gardening Festival was held at Parkside on May 26th

, and the

wonderful Open Garden Weekend tour of gardens happened on July 21st and 22nd. These major events

involve year-round planning and many, many volunteer hours. Chief organizers Wayne Hugli and Theresa

Cullum are quick to thank all participants; we also thank them both very much.

Small but well-attended events included the Jane Goodall Trail Tour with Peter Beckett and Graeme Spiers

on June 16th, the VETAC 40th Anniversary tour of re-greened schools on August 29th, and the Seniors’

Fair at Parkside on September 21st.

A number of “hands in the soil” activities took place throughout the growing season. A group of

volunteers met each month from May to October to care for our gardens at John Street Park. The CNIB

gardens were maintained by volunteers led by Georgette Mitchell. Donated plants were potted up May

23rd for the Annual Plant Sale. Organized by Pat O’Grady and Master Gardener Cathy Carr, the plant sale

is one of our major fundraisers. It was held jointly with Sudbury Master Gardeners and held at the

Gardening Festival. And on September 12th, Master Gardeners and Society volunteers assisted the

student winners of the Ugliest Schoolyard Contest at Confederation Secondary School in Val Caron.

Hundreds of hours of volunteer work by community partners, individual members, committees, and the

Board make all of these activities possible. And now, we can all relax with one of the gardening books the

Society donated to the Sudbury Public Library, or one from our free Little Library at John Street Park; or

we can read a yearbook or newsletter edited by Hermina Hubert’s committee; or we can check out our

Society website or browse our Facebook page, thanks to Webmaster Linda Hugli. You might discover

more about 2018 than I have mentioned here. Now, are we all excited for 2019?
