GAME #9 Hamline Pipers (63/42 MIAC)
At Concordia Cobbers (53/32 MIAC)
January 6, 2007 Memorial Auditorium
Moorhead, MN GAME TIME: 3 p.m. SERIES: Concordia leads 482 SERIES STARTED: 1980 LAST SEASON: Concordia continued their winning ways against the Pipers by winning both games. Led by Melanie Hageman’s gamehigh 22 points and gamehigh 12 rebounds, the Cobbers proved the old adage, "It's not how you start the game, it's how you finish." Visiting Concordia used the strength of an 114 run in the final 3:00 of the game to post a 6357 win over the home Pipers. The second game of the series was the Cobbers’ season finale. Concordia had been making a habit of starting slowly in their last few games, the team had started like a Yugo trying to get up to speed in the Daytona 500. Against the Pipers, Cobber head coach Jessica Rahman popped the clutch on Concordia's NASCAR and bolted to a 140 lead en route to a 7361 victory. Hamline’s Carolyn Korchik lead all scorers with 20 points, but it was not enough as the Cobbers had four players in doubledigits and Anne Keeley notched ten rebounds and thirteen points for the doubledouble. The Pipers’ last victory against the Cobbers came on February 15, 2003.
GAMEDAY GAME NOTES Ø Concordia enters today’s game after having tripped and fallen coming out of the gate in 2007. The Cobbers lost at Macalester on Wednesday 5752 in overtime. The game was the first overtime game of the season for CC and might prove costly to their title aspirations. The loss also snapped a threegame win streak the Cobbers had strung together just before the Christmas break. Ø The loss to the Scots was just the second time in the 45game series history that Concordia has fallen to Macalester. The only other defeat came at home in 1994 in a 7978 double overtime thriller. Ø In the game against the Scots, Concordia shot a seasonlow 28.8% from the field. It was the first time all season that the Cobbers had shot under 32.0% from the floor. Ø Annie Keeley led Concordia in scoring against Macalester with 14 points. She has now taken over the team lead in scoring. She is averaging 16.8 points per game in the team’s eight games this season. Melanie Hageman leads the team in scoring in conference games. She is averaging 14.8 points per game in league contests and 16.6 ppg in overall games this year. Keeley is currently fourth in the MIAC in overall scoring but still leads the league in 3point field goals (2.88/game). Ø Hageman is fifth in the league in scoring in overall games and is third in both field goal percentage (55.6%) and rebounding (8.4). In league games she is sixth in scoring (14.8), second in rebounding (9.0) and fourth in field goal percentage (55.6%). Ø Freshman guard Sara Sorbo was the only other player for the Cobbers that scored in double figures against the Scots. She had 11 points – marking the second time this season that she has scored in double digits. Sorbo is currently tied for seventh in the MIAC in steals per game (2.00). Ø As a team, Concordia is third in the league in rebounding defense. CC is holding opponents to 34.2 rebounds per game. The Cobbers are also second in offensive rebounds (13.6/gm), third in rebounding margin (+3.6) and third in 3point field goals made (5.4/gm). Ø The Cobbers are entering a stretch where they will play eight of their next 11 games at home. After today’s game, CC will host Gustavus on Monday, travel to Bethel on Wednesday and the return home to face St. Thomas next Saturday – welcome back to the wild and wooly MIAC!! Ø Hamline comes into today’s game after beating Augsburg 8266 on Wednesday to open the 2007 portion of their schedule. The Pipers are currently 42 in the MIAC and in a twoway tie for third place. Ø The Pipers lead the MIAC in points per game. In their six conference games they are averaging 73.3 points per game and have scored at least 70 points in four of their six conference games. They have also lit up the scoreboard for at least 80 points in three of their last four games. By contrast, Concordia has scored 70 points in only one of five MIAC games. Ø The Pipers started the MIAC campaign by going 31. It marked the best beginning to an MIAC season since the team started 41 in 198586. Ø On the other side of the ball, Hamline is ninth in the league in opponents scoring average in league games. In their six MIAC games, they are allowing an average of 65.2 points per game. Ø Hamline is led in scoring by sophomore Jessica Heinen. The 60 center is averaging 11.1 points and 7.0 rebounds per game this season. Ø Earlier this year, Hamline beat St. Thomas for the third consecutive time. That streak broke up a 38game losing skid the Pipers had endured against the Tommies. Ø Hamline starting senior forward Ashlee Senser is the daughter of former Minnesota Viking great tight end, and current radio broadcaster, Joe Senser.

Cobber Last Game Recap ST. PAUL, Minn. (1/03/07) Concordia shot a seasonlow 28.8% (17 of59) from the field and were outscored in overtime as they lost to upsetminded Macalester 5752 in St. Paul on Wednesday. The loss to the Scots, who only rejoined the MIAC this season, is just the second for the Cobbers in their 45game series history with the Scots. Scoreless streaks at the start of the second half and then overtime spelled doom for the Cobbers. Concordia did not score a field goal in the first 6:42 of the second period and then allowed Macalester to score eight straight points in overtime to put an end to their threegame winning streak.
Annie Keeley led all Cobbers in scoring. She scored 14 points before fouling out in the overtime period. Freshman Sara Sorbo was the only other Concordia player in double figures. She had 11 points. CC junior post player Melanie Hageman was held to a seasonlow six points and made only one field goal from the floor. She added a teamhigh eight rebounds. The Scots had a pair of players post doubledoubles on the night. Anna Baltzer had 17 points and 13 rebounds and Elise Pagel added 14 points and 14 rebounds.
The shooting totals for Concordia got even colder from behind the arc where CC shot a mere 28.6% (6of21) for the game. The Cobbers made only two 3point field goals in the second half and did not connect on a longrange shot in the fiveminute overtime period. Macalester shot 36.7% (18of49) from the field but held a commanding 4834 advantage in rebounds. The Scots used that advantage to post a 100 edge in secondchance points.
The teams combined to commit 47 turnovers. CC posted 21 miscues while the Scots turned the ball over 26 times.
