Assignment brief

You are asked to create an interior living space, for an upcoming point and click room exploration title. The room should include all essential furniture, and depending on the direction you choose for the style, any number of other appropriate assets. Use photographic references, observation or drawings to create models to a visually consistent scale, and place them in a convincing scene which incorporates lights and graphics/textures to represent materials

At the beginning of the this extravagant assignment, I constructed a mood board to give my self ideas for the environment. My idea was to model the mood board like the environment I wanted to make to act as a sort of guide for I ever ran into a rough patch.

The design for my chairs never changed from the original idea I conceived from the mood board, however the ‘feel’ the chairs gave wasn’t a modern one. After several different colour choices I decided on a black fabric, I felt tis portrayed the modern feel I was after.

After settling on the colour, I then decided to add a back cushions, this was taken directly from an image I was using on Google as a reference.

I positioned the chairs to face the TV from behind the coffee table as this gave a practical feel to the room.

When I initially placed my walls there were more of a frame, and this meant they exceeded the height that was necessary for the room, however I soon forgot this and began building the room out of scale. After I began making the window in scale to the wall it wasn’t long before Frazer questioned the scale I was working to.With this realisation I quickly lowered the walls and began to re-arrange and re-size the window to be in scale with the rest of the environment.

After placing the window in I soon realised I had doomed myself, I now needed an outside. Most people created an area to be placed outside the window, I didn’t have the time/patience/skill needed to do that. So I took the easy way out, I made a skybox. I placed a large plane and textured it out side the window at a distance, I then added a floor plane and textured it as well. Finally to sell the experience I used the trees 3DSMax provided and created a small woodland area directly outside the tree, this has a two fold purpose, it adds the realism of the environment while taking the attention off the planes who are very notably bad as they are just flat textures.

I had the idea of creating a table lamp from the beginning, but that soon became a childish dream due to the factor known as… Laziness. So I made this tall lamp instead, was way easier, but man you should see the bulb, I put so much detail into it. Also I decided I was having a clock, although it was the last thing I made it took a bit of work. I originally made the texture to small and so the clock face sat to high on the object, after some tedious re-sizing I finally got the right size, and the created the clock hands and central piece in no time at all.The cupboard was just one of those things, it was an easy build, and originally was meant to fill space, but at that time Ben had changed my back ground on my desktop to Boris Johnson, and so I made a picture frame with his picture as a little personal joke.

Mr sunlight

Concentrated direction of light, to flood the room

I used a sky light directed at theWindow for the overall environmentLighting, and then added in the Mr skyportalWhich I placed in the window, this created theIllusion of outdoor light flooding indoors.

EvaluationI found the project to be rather challenging and overall difficult. If I was to attempt this project again I would put more time aside for my preproduction and planning, as they suffered due to my eagerness to start my environment, but ironically this caused my environment to progress slowly and inefficiently as I had next to none planning or preproduction to refer to.

The biggest obstacle I faced would have to be, apart from my lack of ability with 3DS Max, modelling the environment in scale, I was constantly having to rescale in minor increments, and even with the finished product I would say that some objects look either too large or too small, but I am unable to see which ones are causing the feeling of this scale imbalance.
