OGDeN, Utah -- Four of northern Colorado’s five starters scored in double figures Saturday at Weber State, led by tate Unruh’s 17, but the bears’ defense struggled a bit in a 93-82 loss at Dee events Center.

First let’s talk about the good. Unruh made five of 11 from the field and tied a career-high with

five 3-pointers, and freshman tim huskisson scored 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Connor osborne scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds, and tevin Svihovec notched double-digits scoring again with 11.

emmanuel Addo came off the bench with 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds, helping northern Colorado (7-15, 4-7 big Sky) win the rebounding battle for the 17th time in 22 tries this season.

the bears also shot 49 percent for the game, made half of their three-point tries (10-20) and put in 13 of 18 free-throw attempts just 48 hours after missing 17 freebies in a frustrating home loss to Sacramento State.

the not so good?Well, Weber State (18-4, 10-1) showed why it’s the top team in

the big Sky so far this season with a scorching first half. the Wildcats shot 60 percent from the floor before halftime (18-30) and led 54-35, scoring more points in the half than any team has against northern Colorado in any half this season.

northern Colorado did “win” the second half, scoring 46 to Weber State’s 39, but the deficit was too much to overcome for coach b.J. hill’s talented but young squad.

“I’m proud of them,” hill said. “they took a big step tonight. Again, we didn’t start off well—gave them way too many points off our turnovers in the first half—but freshman and new sophomores will do that against one of the best big Sky teams I’ve seen in the six years that I’ve been in this league.

“I thought we fought. I thought we continued to fight for 40 minutes. I’m proud of them. We got better, and that’s all that I can ask as a coach: that they get better every time they take the floor.”

the Wildcats’ Damian Lillard, the nation’s leading scorer and a po-tential nbA first-round draft pick this spring, finished with 35 points

on 12-of-18 shooting. he also dished out a team-high five assists.Scott bamforth backed him for Weber State with 18 points.the bears were down 21-9 six minutes into the game but went

on an 8-2 run over the next two minutes to pull within six, at 23-17, with 11:50 to play. After withstanding Weber State’s initial haymaker, hill’s group seemed like it was poised to put up a fight in a tough road environment.

the Wildcats finished the half with a 31-18 run, though, and then started the second half with an 11-5 run to take complete control at 65-39.

the bears controlled the game from there, outscoring the home team by 14 the rest of the way.

“We did a lot of good things, it’s just that we’ve got to continue to get better defensively in our habits. We played a really talented, really explosive team tonight, and it showed.”

OPeNiNG tiPu northern Colorado will play its final regular-season home game of the 2011-12 season thursday night when it welcomes in big Sky-leading Weber State for a 7:05 p.m. Mt game at butler-hancock Sports Pavilion.

u A win thursday against Weber State (tied with Montana for the big Sky lead) would help in a tiebreaker situation with the bobcats or the eagles. the big Sky Conference utilizes head-to-head records as its first tiebreaker in postseason qualification but record against conference teams (in descending order) is the second tiebreaker.

u the bears and their fans figure to be an emotional group thursday as northern Colorado Athletics is set to host “Senior night” and honor Mike Proctor in his final home game for the bears.

u Proctor has quietly put together one of the most well-rounded careers in northern Colorado basketball history. he enters thursday’s game with more than 800 career points (803), more than 600 career rebounds (639), and he has started 69 times in his career and led the bears in rebounds 41 times. “Procchops,” as his teammates and fans have sometimes called him, will definitely be missed.

u the bears and the Wildcats have played 11 times in their history, with Weber State owning an 8-3 advantage since the series started with big Sky play during the 2006-07 season.

u northern Colorado is 3-2 all-time against Weber State in Greeley and has won the last two times the teams have played in butler-hancock Sports Pavilion, including earning a 19-point win (65-46) last season.

u the bears have lost eight home games this season (5-8) and have one game remaining at butler-hancock Sports Pavilion. northern Colorado has lost nine or more games at butler-hancock Sports Pavilion just twice in the 38 years it’s played in the building (It lost 10 times in 1990-91; nine times during the 2006-07 season).

tHe BeAR FACtSu northern Colorado began its transition to nCAA Division I play in 2003, and bears’basketball was first postseason eligible in 2007.

u northern Colorado has been an exceptionally strong rebounding team this season, and its plus-5.1 rebounding margin is the best mark of the big Sky Conference’s nine programs and ranks it 35th in the country in the category. the bears have outrebounded their opponents in 14 of their past 16 games and 21 times in 26 games this season.

u Unfortunately, it’s not equating to a lot of wins, though. northern Colorado is 8-13 when outrebounding opponents this season.

u It should come as little surprise, but it’s still worth noting: when northern Colorado has flexed its defensive muscle over the last two seasons (b.J. hill’s tenure as its head coach), it’s usually won. the bears are 7-1 this season and 20-4 in the last two years when allowing fewer than 70 points to their opponent.

u on the flipside, if northern Colorado allows its foe to get to 80 points or more, it’s winless this season (0-8) and 1-11 under hill.

u northern Colorado, coming off Saturday’s win against Cal Poly, is 17-12 under hill following a win, with a 1-7 mark this season.

u northern Colorado is the big Sky’s third-highest scoring team at 72.3 points per game this season, and a key component to the bears’ strong offense in 2011 has been their team shooting. UnC’s three-point shooting percentage entering Saturday night is 45.4 percent, which is tops in the league and the very best in the entire country (out of 338 nCAA Division I teams). Second place in the category is Cal State Fullerton at 42.9 percent.

u northern Colorado is also shooting 48.2 percent from the field, which is the 21st best mark in the nCAA and second best in the big Sky.

u northern Colorado finished the 2011 season ranked no. 98 in the final and official nCAA RPI report, coming in ahead of every big Sky-team, including Montana (122), northern Arizona (161) and Weber State (162).

u that top-100 finish represented a monumental four-year turnaround for the bears, who finished the 2007 season ranked at no. 336 -- the lowest in nCAA Division I.

u northern Colorado received 141 points, one first-place vote and the third pick in this year’s big Sky Conference Preseason basketball Media Poll, which is the programs’ second top-three preseason nod in the last two seasons. the bears’ preseason media picks since joining the league in 2006: 9th, 8th, 6th, 6th, 2nd.

u the bears received 41 points, no first-place votes and the fourth pick in the big Sky Preseason Coaches poll, which is where they were picked last year, too.

u the bears have made at least one 3-pointer in 167 straight games, with their last 0-for coming against Weber State on Dec. 28, 2006.

u northern Colorado, 14-0 at home during the 2010-11 season, is 31-9 in Greeley over the past three seasons and 41-13 at home since 2008.

u the bears are 22-4 under head coach b.J. hill when leading at the half, including a 5-2 mark in that situation this season.

u northern Colorado won the big Sky Conference’s regular-season and postseason championships in 2011 and qualified for its first nCAA tournament -- just five years after beginning play at nCAA Division I. the bears drew a no. 15 seed and lost to second-seeded San Diego State 68-50 in tucson, Ariz.

PROCtOR CHOPPiNG AWAY At CAReeR ReBOUNDS LiStu Senior Mike Proctor enters his “Senior night” on a climb up the bears’ career rebounds list. he enters thursday’s game with 639 rebounds in his four-year career, putting him in sixth place in school history and leaving him just nine rebounds shy of fifth place (see chart on page 8).

u his 17-rebound performance Monday night, Jan. 30, at northern Arizona helped with his climb.

u that effort tied him with Weber State’s Frank otis for the most single-game rebounds by a big Sky player this season and tied him with former bear Reggie York (2000-01) for the most single-game rebounds by a northern Colorado player since 2000. York’s performance came against Morningside College on Jan. 6, 2001.

u the program’s previous nCAA Division I single-game rebound record was held by Kirk Archibeque (2003-08), who grabbed 15 in a game against Utah Valley State on Jan. 15, 2005.

LASt WeeK’S tOP BeARu northern Colorado redshirt-freshman tevin Svihovec averaged 21.5 points and 5.5 assists in two games last week that saw the bears split against eastern Washington (loss) and Cal Poly.

u Svihovec scored 34 points against the Mustangs on Saturday, surpassing the 33 points Will Figures put in Feb. 13, 2010, which for more than two years had been northern Colorado’s high-water mark for single-game scoring.

u Figures is one of the great players in northern Colorado basketball history, and he was a senior in that game. Svihovec is a redshirt-freshman, who played in just his 26th collegiate basketball game Saturday.

u For the week Svihovec shot 52 percent from the floor (13-25) and 94 percent from the free-throw line (15-16).

SViHOVeC ... LeARN tHe NAMe ... AND LeARN it WeLLu Redshirt-freshman tevin Svihovec earned his first career start against Johnson & Wales on Dec. 3, and he’s been going gangbusters ever since. he hasn’t not started a game since (19 games) and is averaging a team-best 13.1 points per game as a starter with 48.8 percent shooting from the field and 82.3 percent shooting from the free-throw line.

u Svihovec has twice scored 30 or more points in his first collegiate season, putting in 30 points in a double-overtime road win at Idaho State earlier this season and then surpassing that with 34 points last Saturday against Cal Poly.

u Svihovec scored 11 points in his first start against J&W but then put in just two points apiece in the bears’ subsequent games against Denver and Marquette. Since then, however, he has scored fewer than 10 a game just once (at eastern Washington) and gotten to double figures in 15 of 16 games.

u none of it comes as a surprise to northern Colorado coach b.J. hill or his assistants. they had designs on utilizing Svihovec a lot last year as a true freshman -- when they won the big Sky Conference -- but a preseason foot injury to Svihovec derailed those plans.

YOUNG GUNSu A senior has led northern Colorado in scoring average in each of the last three seasons, with Devon beitzel (2010-11), Will Figures (2009-10) and Jabril banks (2008-09) all leading the way. And before that two juniors paced the bears in scoring, with banks (2007-08) and Sean taibi (2006-07) carrying the torch in their third years on the floor.

u So current sophomore tate Unruh and freshman tevin Svihovec, who lead northern Colorado in scoring per game this season with 11.0 points and 10.9 points per game, respecitvely, are marching into uncharted territory.

u the last underclassman to finish the as the bears’ season scoring leader was taibi, who scored 15.3 points per game as a sophomore during the 2005-06 season.

u If Svihovec passes Unruh in the season scoring race he would become just the fifth freshman in school history to lead northern Colorado in scoring in a season and would be the first since todd Lane (1990-93) led the bears during the 1990-91 season at 15.3 points per game.

u And as far as single-game scoring goes, both have accomplished something this season that hadn’t been done since beitzel’s sophomore season (2008-09). Unruh put in a career-high 25 points earlier this year at Marquette, and Svihovec scored 30 points in the bears’ double-overtime loss at Idaho State.

u If either’s career turns out like beitzel’s -- he was the 2010-11 big Sky Conference MVP and a 2011 Associated Press honorable Mention All-American -- the bears and their fans are in for a treat.

BUiLDiNG A FOUNDAtiON u the overall results haven’t quite been what northern Colorado basketball fans had gotten accustomed to seeing the last few seasons, but take a quick look at the team’s statistical breakdown (chart on page 3), and it’s easy to see some glimmers of hope for a future even better than the recent past.

u For starters, b.J. hill’s “baby bears” are leading the nation in three-point shooting (out of 338 nCAA Division I teams) at 45.4 percent marksmanship from behind the three-point arc. And northern Colorado’s top three-point shooters this season are Paul Garnica (a sopho-more), tevin Svihovec (a redshirt-freshman) and tate Unruh (a redshirt-sophomore).

u the bears have been a great three-point shooting team since they joined the big Sky Conference, but they haven’t finished in the national top 20 in the category in any of their five previous years in the league. that figures to change this season with just two games left in the regular season.

u hill’s young northern Colorado squad is also the big Sky’s best rebounding team, pulling down boards at a league-best +5.1 rebounding margin through this season’s 26 games. that puts the bears at 35th in the country in the category.

u to shed some perspective: when it won a school-record 25 games during the 2009-19 season, northern Colorado was ranked 162nd in the country in rebounding margin. the bears have never ranked higher than

SPReADiNG it AROUNDu A quick glance at the northern Colorado season stats shows a well-balanced offensive team -- really well balanced. the bears come into thursday night with eight players averaging six or more points per game this season, with true-freshman tim huskisson coming in in the low spot at 6.7 points per game.

u the bears have been led in scoring by seven players this season.

u Senior Mike Proctor and sophomore tate Unruh have led the way a team-high seven times during the 2011-12 season, while sophomore Connor osborne and freshman tevin Svihovec have been the top bear four times. emmanuel Addo has led the way three times, and Paul Garnica and huskisson have led the bears one game apiece.

tHeY’Re FRee ... WHY NOt tAKe ADVANtAGe? u northern Colorado has been one of the nation’s best free-throw shooting teams since it joined the big Sky in 2006, and that was never more apparent than last season, when the bears finished ranked eighth in the country in free-throw shooting percentage at 77 percent.

u the bears have struggled a little bit from the stripe this season and enter Saturday ranked 103rd in the country and fourth in the big Sky Conference this season in free-throw shooting at 71.0 percent.

u northern Colorado’s worst season from the stripe at the Division I level came in that first year (2006-07) when it shot 68.8 percent from the line. the bears have steadily improved every year since (70.9 pct. in 2008, 72.3 pct. in 2009, 74.5 pct. in 2010 and 77 percent in 2011).

HALFWAY MARK HAS BeeN ALL-tHe-WAY iNDiCAtORu over the last two seasons, if northern Colorado basketball can get to the half with a lead, the bears usually hold on and end the game with a lead, too.

u the bears are 38-6 since 2010 when leading at the half, including an 21-4 mark in that situation under b.J. hill.

NC ON tHe tVu northern Colorado, with its win against Montana State on Saturday, Feb. 11, (Altitude), is 12-34 all-time in televised contests and 9-10 in its last 19 tV games.

u the bears turned in one of the best seasons of any team in the country last year, and they were rewarded in their 2011-12 schedule with myriad television opportunities.

u northern Colorado basketball was on tV a school-record 10 times during the 2010-11 season, and its got the potential to match that this season with another run to the big Sky Conference semifinal (Altitude) and final games (eSPn2) and the nCAA tournament (tbD).

u the bears earned their first-ever national tV exposure last season when it advanced to the big Sky Championship final and nCAA tournament.

SOMetHiNG’S MiSSiNG HeRe ...u northern Colorado achieved great success during a historic run in 2011, but much of that was due in large part to the production of seniors (Devon beitzel, Chris Kaba, neal Kingman and taylor Montgomery) who aren’t with the program anymore.

u here’s a closer look at what the bears have had to replace this season: 1,501 points (66 percent of team’s scoring), 453 made field goals (62 percent), 418 made free throws (73 percent) and 602 rebounds (58 percent).

u the bears in 2011-12 also had to replace quite a few minutes played, with beitzel, Kaba, Kingman and Montgomery accounting for 112 minutes played per game last season (56 percent).

u the last time northern Colorado returned less than 40% of its previous year’s scoring was in the 2004-2005 season.

tHe RetURNS ARe GOOD, tHOUGHu When the ball went up in the bears’ opener this season against new Mexico State, northern Colorado featured quite a different look than the team that took the floor during last year’s run to “March Madness.” but there were some familiar faces and others who have been with the program for awhile, just not seen any floor time yet.

u take senior forward Mike Proctor, for example. he’s been an integral part of the bears since his first career game at oregon in november 2008, and Coach b.J. hill has looked for big things from his lone senior, who came into this season averaging six points per game over his career, to go along with five rebounds per game and a 50 percent career shooting mark from the field.

u the bears also welcomed back this season Paul Garnica (played last year as a true freshman), tate Unruh (redshirted two years ago; played last year), emmanuel Addo (redshirted two years ago; played a lot last year), Connor osborne (played two years ago; medical redshirt last year) and tevin Svihovec (has never played but redshirted last year).

Located on northern Colorado’s west campus, butler-hancock Sports Pavilion serves as “the home of the bears.”

named for longtime northern Colorado coaches Pete butler and John hancock, butler-hancock Sports Pavilion first opened as “butler-hancock hall” on Feb. 4, 1975, with a women’s and men’s basketball doubleheader. the northern Colorado women played Wyoming, while the men played host to Air Force.

the building’s name was changed to “butler-hancock Sports Pavilion” during the 2004-05 school year and remains home for northern Colorado’s men’s and women’s basketball programs, as well as its volleyball and wrestling teams.

the building has undergone impressive renovations during the last decade, including in 2006, when, as part of a $16 million dollar student-fee referendum, butler-hancock received a much needed makeover. new chairback seats were installed through-out, a new sound system and message and scoreboard center were added, as were enovated restrooms, an onsite ticket center and improved entry points.

butler-hancock’s official seating capacity used to be 4,500 but the renovations in 2006-07 brought that down to 2,992, creating a much more intimate feeling for spectators.

northern Colorado Men’s basketball has experienced a pretty sizeable homecourt advantage inside butler-hancock’s brick walls and are well over .500 (chart at left) at home since it opened in 1975.

that home winning tradition has continued since 2007, when the bears began playing at the nCAA Division I level, too. After struggling in its inaugural season at Division I, northern Colorado has strung together five straight winning seasons at home, including last year, when the bears finished 14-0 for just the third undefeated season in school history.

northern Colorado entered the 2011-12 season with a 256-132 record at butler-hancock in 38 seasons and with a mark of 37-6 since the beginning of the 2008 season.

the biggest “names” to play in butler-hancock Sports Pavilion in the last decade include oregon State (2006), San Diego State (2008) and new Mexico State (2011).

butler-hancock has been the site of numerous memorable events in its history, including the 2011 big Sky Conference Men’s basketball Championship, which was won by the bears and broadcast nationally on Altitude (semifinal) and eSPn2 (final).

butler-hancock has also hosted nCAA regional volleyball tournaments in 1981, 1989, 1990 and 2002, a regional men’s basketball tournament in 1989 and a regional women’s basket-ball game in 1995.

butler-hancock was also the site of the 1992, 1996 and 2001 nCAA Division II national Wrestling Championships, and in summer 2002, butler-hancock Sports Pavilion hosted a men’s olympic volleyball exhibition match between the United States and Korean national teams.



B.J. HILLB .J. hill, who served as northern Colorado’s associate head men’s

basketball coach during the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons and was a top bears assistant for the two years before that, was named the 18th head basketball coach in northern Colorado history on April 19, 2010.

In his first year on the job, hill led northern Colorado to its first big Sky Conference regular-season and postseason titles and its first appearance in the nCAA tournament.

the bears drew a no. 15 seed in the 2011 March Madness and faced second-seeded San Diego State in the tournament’s second round in tucson, Ariz. northern Colorado hung with the Aztecs into the second half before falling 68-50 at McKale Center.

hill was honored as the 2011 big Sky Conference Coach of the Year and landed on numerous national coaching postseason award lists. his 21-11 mark in his first year at the helm was the most first-year wins of any of the previous 17 northern Colorado head basketball coaches.

In hill’s four years on the northern Colorado bench, the bears improved from a team that finished dead last in 2007 in the final nCAA RPI report to a team this year that won 25 games (25-8) and set the school record for most wins in a single season.

northern Colorado qualified for its first nCAA Division I postseason berth in 2009 (big Sky Conference tournament quarterfinals) before advancing to the 2010 big Sky Conference semifinals and then making an appearance in the quarterfinals of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason tournament (CIt).

In hill, who came to the bears after a successful assistant coaching career at various stops in South Dakota, Kansas and Iowa, northern Colo-rado hired a tireless recruiter, a passionate basketball man and a great ambassador for the University of northern Colorado community.

“We all think that continuity in a sports program is paramount to its success,” northern Colorado athletics director Jay hinrichs said. “It was critical that we follow through with our multiyear succession plan to ensure stability throughout our men’s basketball program and not miss a beat in the development of our student-athletes.”

hinrichs officially introduced hill, 36, to the northern Colorado players

and support staff in a meeting Monday afternoon April 19. he replaced tad boyle, who coached the bears the past four seasons.

“this is an unbelievable opportunity,” hill said. “I want to thank Jay hinrichs, President (Kay) norton and everybody involved who believed in me. I also want to thank tad boyle. I’m extremely excited, and I’m look-ing forward to the opportunity to carry on what Coach (boyle) started and carrying it on to the next level.”

Prior to coming to Greeley, hill worked as an assistant at Indian hills Community College in ottumwa, Iowa, where he worked alongside coach Jeff Kidder and with former bears standouts Jabril banks and Robert Palacios.

hill helped the Warriors to a 25-6 overall record and second-place finish in the Iowa Conference in 2006. Indian hills was ranked as high as no. 3 nationally during the season and won seven more games than the previous year’s squad.

before his time at Indian hills, hill coached five seasons at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College, working with head coach Jay herkelman. In hill’s tenure, the Red Ravens won five consecutive Jayhawk east Conference titles and three straight Region VI championships and had a combined record of 146-33 (.816 winning percentage) and advanced to the 2002 nJCAA national Championship game.

hill spent the 1999-2000 season at South Dakota State University, where he helped the Jackrabbits to the nCAA Division II national tournament and a 21-9 overall record. SDSU finished second place in the north Central Conference that season and played a game against northern Colorado.

hill was an assistant coach at Independence Community College during the 1998-99 season, helping the team to a 22-10 record and second-place finish in the Jayhawk east Conference.

he started coaching during the 1997-98 season at north Iowa Area Community College (nIACC) in Mason City, Iowa, where he was a stand-out player in the early 90s.

A native of Cedar Falls, Iowa, hill played basketball at nIACC and at Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa. he received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Grand View in 1996 and his mas-ter’s degree in athletic administration from South Dakota State in 2001.

GReeLeY -- A new era in northern Colorado basketball began tuesday night with a good first half and a second half that most of the bears and their head coach, b.J. hill, would probably like to forget.

Mike Proctor, the lone senior for northern Colorado this season, scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed six rebounds, and seven of his teammates scored at least eight points in the bears’ 89-65 exhibition win against Chadron State at butler-hancock Sports Pavilion.

the bears, the reigning big Sky Conference champions, started the game on a 5-0 run and led 14-3 when junior-college transfer Aaron hawk-harris (“hawk”) got a rebound and a put-back with 13:41 to play before halftime.

northern Colorado pushed that advantage to 44-19 at the break, thanks to solid 54 percent shooting from the field.

but the eagles, an nCAA Division II team that last played the bears when both were at the Division II level (1999-2000 season), outscored northern Colorado 46-45 after halftime, and that figure ate at hill well past the final buzzer.

the bears, who will start their big Sky Conference Championship defense on Saturday, nov. 12, at home against new Mexico State, committed 21 fouls in the second half, and that resulted in a ragged first contest of the season for both teams and, of course, 29 free-throw tries for Chadron State.

“[Chadron State scores] 65 points, and 34 of them were from the free-throw line … that we give them,” hill said. “those were opportunities that were more on us—not necessarily what they did great, but us not guarding the ball very well. [We were] trying to do too much, I think. We were trying to hit home runs defensively by trying to make great plays, instead of being solid and playing as a unit.

“I thought there were way too many instances [tonight], on both ends of the floor that we tried to hit home runs. We didn’t share the ball very well on the offensive end—we talked about going inside continuously, because I didn’t think [Chadron State] could guard us; I didn’t think they had the depth inside to guard us—but we just didn’t have the patience to do it. So that’s something as a staff we can adjust, hopefully.”

newcomers bryce Douvier, tim huskisson, brendan Keane and hawk-harris joined tate Unruh with nine points, while tevin Svihovec and Paul Garnica added eight points apiece.

GReeLeY -- northern Colorado basketball broke a 41-41 halftime tie Saturday night against new Mexico State with a 9-2 run and took a 50-43 lead with 16:38 to play, capped by a down-the-lane dunk from redshirt-sophomore Connor osborne.

the Aggies slowed the bears’ tempo from there, though, and enacted some revenge for last season’s home eSPn bracketbusters loss, with an 89-75 win at butler-hancock Sports Pavilion.

the bears (0-1), who lost at home for the first time since March 2010 (CIt Quarterfinals), shot 55 percent from the field in the first half and 67 percent (6-of-9) from beyond the three-point line but committed 20 turnovers, fouled the Aggies (1-0) 17 times and lost the rebounding battle 41-27.

“We turned it over a bunch, and it led to easy baskets for [new Mexico State] that we couldn’t defend,” northern Colorado coach b.J. hill said. “We told our guys that coming into the game: that we can’t guard bad shots, and we can’t guard turnovers, and so we were going to have to limit those as much as we could. And we didn’t do a very good job of that tonight when you look at the fact that we let [nMSU] get to the free-throw line 41 times, and we turned the ball over 20 times.”

“We cannot turn the ball over 20 times in a game and expect to win, especially against a team as talented as new Mexico State.”

Redshirt-sophomore tate Unruh scored a career-high 15 points in the loss for northern Colorado, and true-sophomore Paul Garnica scored a career-most 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting.

Junior elliott Lloyd, who started 31 of the bears’ 32 games last season, added nine points, and osborne chipped in eight in his first game in nearly 20 months after he broke a bone in his hand prior to last season and sat out with a medical redshirt.

osborne also led the bears with seven boards.After the game, though, all hill wanted to talk about was his team’s defensive performance, which

resulted in the most points scored by an opponent at butler-hancock since texas State put in 93 points in november 2008.

“I’m not worried about offense with this team,” hill said. “We need guys to separate themselves defensively. We can’t give up 89 points and let teams get to the free-throw line 41 times. that was the difference and what made us successful in the past, is that those teams understood the importance of guarding people and having a sense of urgency every possession defensively. this young team doesn’t have that.”

LARAMie, Wyo. -- northern Colorado basketball shot out to a 7-0 run against Wyoming on tuesday night, calling to mind the bears’ incredible 31-4 start last season against the Cowboys in Greeley that ended up a 67-53 northern Colorado win.

that’s about all from tuesday’s game that resembled last year’s victory, however.Wyoming quickly erased the bears’ lead, took command of the game by halftime and cruised to a

75-56 win at Arena-Auditorium, dropping northern Colorado to 0-2 in a season for the first time since 2008.

Sophomore Paul Garnica finished with a career-high 18 points—his second straight career-best scoring performance to start the season—and freshman tim huskisson put in 10 points with a 5-for-5 effort from the free-throw line.

Connor osborne had nine points and eight rebounds, helping the bears win the rebounding battle 30-28.

Also, northern Colorado, after gifting Wyoming (2-0) with 14 turnovers in the first half, had just three after halftime and played right with the Cowboys for the second 20 minutes.

the bears just dug themselves too big of a hole before the break.“We’re young and struggling to find ourselves right now,” northern Colorado coach b.J. hill said.

“We’re going to be good—we’re going to be fine, we’ve got a lot of talent—but it’s going to have to start at practice and carry over into games.”

northern Colorado shot just 62 percent from the free-throw line, committed 32 fouls (61 through the season’s first two games) and it allowed the Cowboys to shoot 57 percent in the second half.

And following a Garnica layup at 11:23 in the first half, the bears didn’t score from the field again for a 12-minute stretch, spanning the remainder of the first half and just into the second.

osborne ended that drought with a tip in at 19:39 in the second half, and Garnica’s old-fashioned three-point play on the bears’ next possession pulled them within 32-19 and appeared to be the beginning of a comeback run.

It wasn’t, as Wyoming squelched the mini-rally and closed out the game for its first 2-0 start since 2008.

GAME 3: NORTHERN IOWA 78, NORTHERN COLORADO 69Sunday, Nov. 20 -- Cedar Falls, iowa (McLeod Center)

CeDAR FALLS, iowa -- Sophomore Paul Garnica continued his early-season surge for northern Colorado basketball on Sunday night in the bears’ 78-69 loss at northern Iowa in the first round of the South Padre Island Invitational.

Garnica finished with a game-high and career-high 22 points on seven-of-15 shooting, including six of nine from beyond the three-point arc, as he nearly pushed the bears past the Panthers in the first-ever meeting between the schools.

Sophomore tate Unruh backed him with 12 points, but those were the only two bears in double figures as coach b.J. hill’s program fell to 0-3 on the season.

Conversely, northern Iowa, which defeated Kansas to advance to the nCAA tournament’s Sweet 16 in 2010, shot 51 percent from the field (24-47) and had five players finish with double-digit points, led by Johnny Moran’s 17.

the bears stayed in the game with a 13-for-20 effort from three.“When you give that team that many extra attempts it’s going to hurt you,” hill said, “but there were

some bright points that we can definitely grow from.“It was nice to see the motion team from practice show up on game night. now, I say that, and you

still had way too many turnovers (25), but our motion and our action in our halfcourt offense was really good. I’d still like to see us get it inside more, but against a very-well disciplined defensive team, I thought we did a good job taking what was there and being patient. And we hit some shots. to beat a team like this on the road you’ve got to hit some shots.”

Garnica, after putting in 14 and 18 points, respectively, in northern Colorado’s first two games this season, was sizzling Sunday, scoring 11 points in each half, to go along with three rebounds, two steals, two assists and two free throws in the game—part of the bears’ perfect 12-for-12 effort from the line.

“When a guy drives it full speed when there’s five defenders back and he pulls up without a pass with 32 (seconds) on the shot clock, you know that: one, he’s a good player, and, two, he must have a lot of confidence,” northern Iowa coach ben Jacobson told the Des Moines Register. “those ones are hard to defend.”

Redshirt-freshman tevin Svihovec hit a three at the 9:57 mark in the first half to put northern Colo-rado ahead 22-15. the Panthers chipped away at the lead from there and led 63-54 with a little more than six minutes to go in the game.

GAME 4: IOWA STATE 90, NORTHERN COLORADO 82tuesday, Nov. 22 -- Ames, iowa (Hilton Coliseum)

MeN’S BASKetBALL BAttLeS iN ROAD LOSS At iOWA StAteAMeS, iowa -- Iowa State splashed home a school-record 16 three-pointers tuesday night against

northern Colorado and got a career-high performance from senior guard Chris Allen in front of a raucous crowd of 11,155.

And, the Cyclones, picked by some as a surprise team this year in the always-loaded big 12, needed nearly all of those points to hold off the bears in a 90-82 win at hilton Coliseum in the second round of the 2011 South Padre Island Invitational.

northern Colorado (0-4) shot a remarkable 49 percent for the game (32-65), 44 percent from three (10-23) and had five players score in double-figures, including true-freshman tim huskisson, who put in a career-high 16 points in just 19 minutes.

Sophomores Paul Garnica and emmanuel Addo scored 15 apiece for the bears, senior Mike Proctor added 14 and sophomore tate Unruh had 13.

Allen’s 23 points paced Iowa State (3-1), who shot 50 percent in the first 20 minutes (16-32) but just 41 percent in the second (12-29).

the bears outscored the Cyclones 43-38 after the break and whipped them in the paint overall with a 38-18 scoring advantage.

“the first half, we didn’t come out with the defensive intensity,” northern Colorado coach b.J. hill said. “I think we played a little back on our heels and might have been a little intimidated by the scout-ing report and seeing transfers from Michigan State and Marquette here and there and ‘top player this’ and ‘top player that.’ And that’s the way we played defensively.

“the second half, I was really pleased with the way we played defensively. to hold a team of that talent to 41 percent [shooting] is really good. We did get outrebounded (34-33), but, again, to get outrebounded by one to a team of that talent … I’m pleased with that. to give fans a feel back in Greeley, [Iowa State] is more talented than the Arizona team that we played last year. they aren’t as disciplined—they’re not as tough yet—but they’re more talented than that team that we played last year down in tucson, Ariz., and that team went to the elite eight.”

After both teams traded jabs for much of the first half tuesday, Iowa State pushed its advantage to 16 with 1:47 left before halftime and seemed poised to do exactly what Arizona did to the bears last season in a not-as-close-as-that 93-70 win.

northern Colorado would have none of it this night, however, and fought all the way back to close the gap to six points four times in the second half.

Iowa State answered each time, though—often with one of their record three-pointers.

GAME 5: NORTHERN COLORADO 74, WESTERN CAROLINA 57Friday, Nov. 25 -- South Padre island, texas (South Padre island Convention Center)

SOUtH PADRe iSLAND, texas -- Connor osborne scored a career-high 16 points Friday against Western Carolina, and Mike Proctor and tate Unruh backed him with 10 points apiece in northern Colorado’s 74-57 win at the South Padre Island Invitational.

osborne finished 6-for-7 from the field (both career highs) and made 4-of-6 free-throws to pace the bears in their first win of the season (1-4) at the South Padre Island Convention Center.

northern Colorado will face Southern (2-3) tomorrow on the final day of the Invitational. the Jaguars defeated Florida A&M 64-61 earlier Friday.

the bears led 26-16 at halftime and continued their hot shooting this season with a 47 percent effort against the Catamounts (2-4), giving them an identical mark so far this season after five games. they shot 43 percent from the field last season en route to their first nCAA tournament.

northern Colorado also continued its strong free-throw shooting of late, hitting 15 of 17. the bears, who made just 30 of their first 49 from the stripe (61 percent), have made 35 of their last 38 (92 percent).

northern Colorado ranked eighth in the country last season in free-throw shooting at 77 percent.the bears had to overcome a 35-point effort from WCU’s brandon boggs, who finished 12-for-23 from

the field.no other Catamount player reached double figures, however, as the bears allowed WCU to just shoot

32 percent after entering the game allowing opponents to shoot 45 percent in their first four contests.

SOUtH PADRe iSLAND, texas -- northern Colorado basketball used a 22-7 run at the start of the second half Saturday against Southern to claim a 77-57 win against the Jaguars on the final day of the South Padre Island Invitational.

the bears (2-4) got points from all 11 players who entered the game, including 10 apiece from Mike Proctor and emmanuel Addo in their most lopsided win of the season at the South Padre Island Convention Center.

the victory earned the bears the 2011 South Padre Island Invitational Madre Division title, joining Liberty and Florida Gulf Coast as previous mid-major winners.

Paul Garnica added eight points and tied a career high with five assists, freshman bryce Douvier matched him with a career-high eight points in just 11 minutes of play. Junior elliott Lloyd also had eight points.

northern Colorado led 34-25 at halftime before coach b.J. hill used his halftime break to stress the importance of second-half energy to his team, which was playing its fourth game in seven days. the bears were ahead at halftime for the second time in as many days, but hill wasn’t pleased with their intensity.

Whatever hill said worked, as the bears pushed their advantage to 56-32 with 12:43 remaining in the game.

“the guys responded really well with that run to start the second half,” hill said. “I thought we went inside, which is what I wanted to do to start the game, but I didn’t communicate that very well in the first 20 minutes. but they got the message. that’s what really opened the game up for us, was going inside. obviously, when you look [at the stats, scoring] 42-12 in the paint was the difference.”

Proctor, who earned a spot on the 2011 South Padre Island Invitational All-tournament team, finished 4-of-9 from the field against the Jaguars (2-3) and made both of his free-throw attempts. his double-digit scoring effort was his third-in-a-row after scoring 14 at Iowa State and 10 yesterday against Western Carolina.

the senior from Phoenix, Ariz., started the year with just 14 points in the bears’ first three games.the bears continued their solid shooting to start the season with a 52 percent effort (31-60).

thursday night with a sluggish 73-60 setback to nAIA Westminster (Utah) at butler-hancock Sports Pavilion.

the bears (2-5) were playing their first of five December home games—their most December games in Greeley since 1994—but the Griffins (9-2) spoiled the party with lights-out shooting from the field and from beyond the three-point arc.

Westminster junior Jake orchard, a University of Utah transfer, led all players with 28 points on 6-of-6 three-point shooting and 9-of-10 shooting overall.

northern Colorado sophomore tate Unruh led the bears with a career-high 16 points, including the first five of the game as the bears built an 8-0 advantage.

Sophomore Paul Garnica put in 14 points, scoring 11 after halftime, and senior Mike Proctor had eight points and a season-high nine rebounds to help the bears win the battle on the glass 34-25.

northern Colorado guards tevin Svihovec and elliott Lloyd had seven points apiece off the bench.“We played exactly how we practiced all week,” northern Colorado coach b.J. hill said. “I don’t think

our team has a lot of respect for anybody right now, and that’s unfortunate. our problem right now is we have a severe lack of leadership and maturity on this basketball team, and that showed this week.

“[Westminster] is a bunch of juniors and seniors. they’re [nCAA] Division I transfers. they’re experienced kids who execute a well-planned scheme. We got outplayed. We got outcoached. We got outdone in every aspect.”

orchard scored 13 of his 28 by halftime to lead the Griffins to a 32-29 advantage at the break, but he heated up even more in the second half (5-5 field goals, 3-3 three-pointers, 2-2 free throws), and that was the difference in Westminster’s first win against an nCAA Division I team since 2004 (Idaho State).

every time thursday the bears needed to get a stop to pull back into the game and avoid the upset, orchard, or tanner Gregory (11 points) usually had an answer.

Westminster, out of Salt Lake City, led by as many as 16 points in the second half, as it finished 12-of-25 from beyond the arc (48 percent) and forced the bears into 16 turnovers.

GReeLeY -- northern Colorado basketball came into its game Saturday night against Johnson & Wales looking to avoid any scene that bore any resemblance to thursday night’s frustrating set back against Westminster.

Well, mission accomplished.the bears had six players score in double figures against the nAIA Division II Wildcats, led by career-

high nights from emmanuel Addo and bryce Douvier, in a lopsided 98-66 win at butler-hancock Sports Pavilion.

Addo, a redshirt-sophomore, finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds—both are career-mosts—and Douvier, a freshman making his first career start, added 10 points and 10 rebounds in just 17 minutes to lead northern Colorado (3-5) to a tie for its second-most lopsided win as a nCAA Division I program.

the bears matched their margin of victory in last season’s 84-52 win against black hills State but fell short of matching their 93-52 win against tabor College to start last season’s run.

Addo made seven of nine from the field Saturday and all three of his free-throw tries, while Douvier, who suffered a broken nose late in the second half, made three of six from the floor and grabbed a team-high six offensive rebounds.

Douvier joined redshirt-freshman tevin Svihovec (11 points) and sophomore walk-on xzaivier James in making their first career starts. they lined up around the center circle for the opening tip with redshirt-sophomores tate Unruh (12 points) and Connor osborne.

Sophomore Paul Garnica came off the bench and splashed home four of six 3-pointers for 12 points, and freshman tim huskisson added 15 points in helping the bears outscore Johnson & Wales (3-8) 58-17 in bench scoring.

All that offense helped northern Colorado put thursday’s numbing loss to the Griffins behind it and overcome the absences of senior Mike Proctor (ankle) and freshman brendan Keane (knee), who didn’t suit up Saturday but aren’t expected to miss a lot of time—if any more games.

“our starting lineup was going to be what it was,” northern Colorado coach b.J. hill said. “[Proctor and Keane] were hurt yesterday in practice, but our starting lineup was going to be what it was. that’s what we had yesterday in practice, so that’s what we had today in the game.”

GReeLeY -- Sophomore guards tate Unruh and Paul Garnica combined for 38 points Wednesday night against Denver, but the Pioneers shot 48 percent in the second half and finished with four players in double figures in escaping with a 71-65 win at butler-hancock Sports Pavilion.

Unruh poured in a career-high 19 on 7-of-15 shooting, and Garnica was right behind with 18 to go along with a game-high six assists. Sophomore Connor osborne scored seven points and added a career-high and game-high 11 rebounds for the bears (3-6).

brian Stafford had 16 points for DU, and three others notched double figures in its win, including Royce o’neale’s 14, brett olson’s 11 and Chris Udofia’s 10.

the bears came into the game off a 10-day break for Finals but were sharp in the first half, knocking down 50 percent from the floor (12-24) to take a 31-26 lead into the break.

northern Colorado coach b.J. hill entered the game with a 19-2 career record when leading at the half, but the bears’ defense that limited the Pioneers (7-2) to just 37 percent shooting in the first half went absent the first 10 minutes after halftime, allowing Denver to shoot 48 percent in the second 20 minutes and drop that mark of hill’s to 19-3.

Denver opened the second half on a 11-0 run, turning the bears’ lead into a 37-31 deficit.“It’s just where we’re at right now in the process,” hill said. “I was really, really pleased with the first

20 minutes and our growth defensively in the last 10 days. but to start that second half, that’s just where we’re at, in terms of our maturity as a team, playing this many young guys.

“they’re having trouble sustaining it when there’s any type of break. We’ve got a halftime, we’ve got to be mentally strong enough and focused enough to be able to come out with that same energy when the defense is away from us—not in front of our bench—and play with the same communica-tion level and the same sense of urgency we had the first 20 minutes. And we didn’t do that, and it lapsed for about five to eight minutes, and then we caught it back again. that’s just where this team is, and right now we’re not good enough to play for 32 minutes. We’ve got to find a way to do it for 40 [minutes].”

Denver and northern Colorado combined for 20 three-pointers, with Denver edging out northern Colorado from long range, 11-9. but hill thought his players got too caught up in a long-range shoot-ing battle with the Pioneers.

MiLWAUKee -- tate Unruh put on a show Saturday afternoon with 25 points—his second career high performance in as many games—but northern Colorado couldn’t hang with 11th-ranked Marquette in a 93-72 road loss at the bradley Center.

true-freshman tim huskisson also had a career effort for the bears, with 17 points, and junior guard elliott Lloyd notched a career-high seven assists and four steals in northern Colorado’s final road game of 2011.

the bears (3-7), who had to overcome Saturday an opening-tip injury to senior starter Mike Proctor, will return home thursday night for a rivalry game against Colorado State and then open their big Sky Conference-championship defense on Saturday, Jan. 31, with a home game against northern Arizona.

the Golden eagles played without leading scorer Darius Johnson-odom (team violation) but got more than enough offense, with five players in double figures in points, including todd Mayo with 22.

Marquette improved to 10-0 for just the seventh time in school history and for the first time since 2001.

“their bodies wore us down,” northern Colorado coach b.J. hill said. “We knew we would have to play well in an arena like this, but they just outmuscled us in the paint (34-18) and on the boards (43-26). You lose a guy like Mike Proctor, and that hurts. he would have been able to help in those areas.”

Unruh, a redshirt-sophomore who led the bears with 19 points Wednesday at home against Denver, hit 10-of-18 from the field Saturday and 5-of-8 from three. he scored 16 of his 25 after halftime, miss-ing just one shot (6-7) and making all of his 3-pointers (4-4).

Unruh also led the bears with five rebounds, and his play helped northern Colorado score 42 points in the second half and overcome Proctor’s injury and a nearly absent performance from leading-scorer Paul Garnica, who came in averaging 14.4 points per game but finished scoreless and played just 11 minutes.

Redshirt-sophomore emmanuel Addo finished with nine points, and junior Aaron hawk-harris, fresh-man brendan Keane and Lloyd all had five points apiece.

the bears somewhat hung with Marquette for most of the first half, but the Golden eagles went on a 12-2 run at the 6:21 mark in the first half to turn a 30-18 advantage into a 42-20 bulge at the final media break before halftime.

GReeLeY -- on this exact date one year ago, northern Colorado basketball suffered a frustrating road loss at Louisiana-Monroe that was, without a doubt, the turning point in a season that ended with the program’s first trip to the nCAA tournament.

the bears are hoping that they’ll eventually look back on thursday night’s 92-78 home loss to Colo-rado State as the same sort of turnaround moment as last year’s setback on the bayou.

northern Colorado won seven straight and 10 of 12 after Christmas last season, and turned a 4-7 record into a 14-9 mark by mid-February and was well on the way toward its first big Sky Conference Championship.

thursday’s loss to the Rams (7-4) dropped northern Colorado to 3-8 in this campaign, including a mind-numbing 1-4 at home, with the opening game of its league-championship defense awaiting around the corner in northern Arizona (7:30 p.m., Dec. 31).

“Scoring 78 is plenty of points,” northern Colorado coach b.J. hill said, “but right now we don’t value the ball very much. When you look, [Colorado State] scored 24 points off our turnovers, and they’re not a team that really presses or does anything out of the ordinary defensively. that’s frustrating because those are points you’re just giving them.”

Dorian Green led Colorado State to its first road win of the season by scoring a career-high 36 points on 11-of-16 shooting and 8-of-10 shooting from three-point. he converted two four-point plays in the second half, with the second pushing the Rams’ lead to 63-44, and came within one three-pointer of tying the Rams’ record for a single game.

Colorado State, which finished with a season-high 13 three-pointers, and shot 59 percent from the field to turn in the best night by a bears’ opponent since February 2009 (north Dakota, 60 percent).

“they’re just not focused on [defense]. they just don’t understand the importance of it,” hill said. “We have two guys in this program (Mike Proctor and elliott Lloyd) who played any type of significant minutes on that team last year or the year before. I know emmanuel [Addo] was on that team; I know tate [Unruh] was on the team; I know tevin [Svihovec] was around in practice. but unless you have a significant role in those seasons, you don’t understand what it takes. And they don’t understand right now. they have to be baptized and get it on their own, because that’s what kids have to do.”

GReeLeY -- Connor osborne had 14 points Saturday night at butler-hancock Sports Pavilion, and northern Colorado dominated inside to beat northern Arizona 80-64 and snap a three-game losing streak.

Mike Proctor added 13 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, and tate Unruh also had 13 points for northern Colorado (4-8, 1-0 big Sky).

tevin Svihovec and Paul Garnica scored 11 apiece for the bears, the defending big Sky regular-season and postseason champions who improved to 4-2 in big Sky openers and 8-7 all-time against nAU (5-9, 1-1).

northern Colorado used a decided height advantage to outscore the Lumberjacks 36-14 in the paint, and it finished shooting 58.7 percent for the game -- it’s highest single-game shooting effort since a 61.1 percent game against bethune-Cookman in november 2010.

“If you look at the numbers, I couldn’t draw it up much better, in terms of numbers,” northern Colo-rado coach b.J. hill said. “When you shoot that percentage, it tells me that our motion was really good, and our kids followed the game plan.”

Gabe Rogers led northern Arizona with 18 points, while James Douglas added 16 for the Lumber-jacks, who are 3-2 under interim coach Dave brown.

Rogers made his second 3-pointer of the half to get the game to 54-44, but Unruh quickly matched it with one of his own.

GReeLeY -- northern Colorado missed a game-tying layup in the final seconds Monday against Idaho State, and it also missed sophomore guard tate Unruh in a 57-55 loss at butler-hancock Sports Pavilion.

Unruh, the bears’ leading scorer coming in at 13.1 points per game, went down with a left-ankle injury early in the first half and didn’t return after playing just seven minutes.

Mike Proctor led northern Colorado (4-9, 1-1 big Sky) in Unruh’s absence with a career-high 16 points, while Paul Garnica finished with 11 and tevin Svihovec had 10, for his third straight double-digit scoring game.

those three combined for 14 of the bears’ 17 turnovers, however, which the Idaho State (3-10, 1-1) turned into 22 points.

northern Colorado also couldn’t shoot its way out of multiple scoring droughts in the first and second halves. It went nearly seven minutes in the first half without a field goal and had two near four-minute stretches in the second half where its only points came from the free-throw line.

northern Colorado started the game on a lightning-quick 11-2 run but couldn’t sustain the momen-tum in falling to the bengals for the first time since 2009 and the first time in Greeley since 2008.

“We didn’t handle the pressure in the end-of-the-game situation, and part of that is--it’s not that the guys don’t value the ball--a big part of it, to me, is this group hasn’t been in this situation,” bears coach b.J. hill said. “they haven’t been in a close game yet, where it’s a one- or two-possession game down the stretch.

“We didn’t react well [late in the game], and that’s my fault. that’s something I can do more in practice.”

Chase Grabau paced the bengals with 18 points, and Kenny McGowen added 16.Grabau, a senior from boulder, made two free throws to put Idaho State ahead 55-53 with 1:57

remaining, and after forcing Proctor into a turnover Melvin Morgan hit a turnaround jumper to make it a four-point game, 57-53, with 57 seconds to play

SACRAMeNtO -- Redshirt-freshman tevin Svihovec put in a career-high 16 points Saturday night at Sacramento State, and emmanuel Addo added 10 off the bench in northern Colorado’s 61-53 big Sky Conference win at the nest.

the bears (5-9, 2-1 big Sky), who held the hornets (5-9, 0-3) to just 38 percent shooting and gave up a season-low in points, improved to 9-2 all-time against Sacramento State and won for the seventh straight time in the series.

“[our] energy, [our] focus was as good as I’ve ever seen it this year and as good as I’ve ever seen it as a head coach,” northern Colorado coach b.J. hill said. “this is definitely the best Sacramento State team that’s been here in the six years I’ve been in the big Sky. this is a really good team. [head coach] brian [Katz] is doing a great job, and for us to come in here and win is a heckuva job.”

the win was northern Colorado’s first true road victory of the season (1-4), and its defensive effort was a big reason for that as it got just two points from leading scorers tate Unruh and Paul Garnica, who were both dealing with leg injuries.

Garnica stayed behind in Greeley to nurse his wounds, and Unruh finished 1-for-4 and missed all of his three-point tries (0-3).

Svihovec was there to pick up the slack, though, as he continued his surge over the last month with his fourth straight double-figure scoring game in his seventh straight start. he’s now the bears’ leading scorer (12.3 points per game) in their three big Sky contests.

he scored 12 points after halftime, helping the bears break free from a 27-27 halftime tie and shoot 57.1 percent (12-of-21) after the break.

“how good was he?” hill said. “I mean, for a freshman to come in here and have 16 [points] and four [rebounds] and three assists and four steals and play 35 minutes … he’s got a lot of toughness and it shows, and each game since Colorado State (on Dec. 22) he’s just been getting better and better and more confident and confident.”

Konner Veteto dropped in a layup at the 8:16 mark to pull Sacramento State within two, at 43-41, but a free throw from Connor osborne (seven points), a dunk from tim huskisson (nine points) and a 3-pointer from elliott Lloyd (eight points) regained the bears a 49-41 cushion.

John Dickson scored 12 points to lead the hornets, and Joe eberhard and Jackson Carbajal scored 11 apiece.

GAME 15: PORTLAND STATE 86, NORTHERN COLORADO 75thursday, Jan. 11 -- Greeley, Colo. (Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion)

BeARS CAN’t StOP ViKiNGS iN SeCOND BiG SKY HOMe LOSS

GReeLeY -- every time northern Colorado basketball got within range thursday night, Portland State was there with an answer.

the Viks entered the game shooting a big Sky-worst 29 percent from three-point range, but they had little trouble in this one, knocking down 13-of-21 from deep in an 86-75 win at butler-hancock Sports Pavilion.

the bears (5-10, 2-2 big Sky) allowed 49 points in the first half as Portland State (8-9, 2-3) shot out to a 49-36 lead with 73 percent shooting from the field and 75 percent shooting from three.

“We definitely wanted to control the paint and make them hit threes, and they did,” northern Colo-rado coach b.J. hill said. “but we have to adjust. We had a lot to do with how open those threes were. [the Vikings] are [nCAA] Division I players. they are good players. they play for a good coach. they’re going to hit open shots. the problem we had was they were very open.

“We’re very inconsistent from our shoulders up in our habits and how we prepare, and it shows. You can’t hide. that’s what I’m trying to get across to these guys: Your daily habits show up on game night. When you don’t come to practice with that intensity, you can’t just flip the switch on game night.”

the bears pulled to within eight a few times in the second half and got to within six, 78-72, when Mike Proctor put in a layup with 2:21 to play. but Portland State, as it did time and again, bounced back with a couple free throws to push the margin back to six.

earlier, elliott Lloyd made it 62-55 with a contested 3-pointer, but the Viks hit a couple free throws and put in a layup on their next two possessions to push their lead back to 11.

Want another example? how about in the first half when northern Colorado responded to PSU’s 20-10 game-opening run by pulling within four at 25-21 with a little more than eight minutes to play in the first half?

the Viks poured water on that rally with a three-pointer and a layup on subsequent trips up the floor to lead 30-21.

Proctor and osborne both tied career highs with 16 points apiece, and elliott Lloyd broke past the 10-point barrier for the first time this season with 11 points on 3-of-4 shooting from three-point range.

Paul Garnica, the bears’ leading scorer, finished with just three points, and those came on a beyond-half-court buzzer-beater at halftime.

GReeLeY -- tate Unruh converted two technical-foul free throws with 12 seconds remaining Saturday to help northern Colorado slip past eastern Washington 71-70 at butler-hancock Sports Pavilion.

Unruh, who finished with seven points for the bears (6-10, 3-2 big Sky), got a chance at the freebies after the eagles’ Colin Chiverton called a timeout that eastern Washington didn’t have.

the eagles did get to huddle up, but it cost them a team technical, and Unruh, now 23-of-24 from the free-throw line on the season, made them pay.

the crazy play was reminiscent of Chris Webber’s famed gaffe for Michigan in the 1993 nCAA Cham-pionship game between the Wolverines and the north Carolina tar heels, and it turned Chiverton from a hero to a goat. his jumper with 18 seconds left had given the eagles (9-9, 3-3) a 70-69 lead and had them on the cusp of knocking off northern Colorado in Greeley for the first time since 2007.

Instead, Unruh’s free throws and freshman tim huskisson’s win-sealing steal on the other end gave northern Colorado a fifth straight win in the series and a 7-5 all-time mark against the eagles since 1971.

“he’s like the [second] all-time leading shooter in Missouri state high school basketball history from the free-throw line,” northern Colorado coach b.J. hill said of Unruh. “So if you’re going to have a guy at the free-throw line in that situation that’s a pretty good one to have.”

Mike Proctor led the bears with 13 points, and tevin Svihovec added 12. northern Colorado used nine players in the game, and all of them scored at least four points.

Chiverton led all players with 21 points, and Cliff ederaine and Parker Kelly scored 12 points apiece for eastern Washington.

the bears took just 35 shots but made 20 of them for a 57.1 percentage from the floor. they put in 47 percent of their shots in the second half (8-17) and 71 percent from beyond the three-point line (5-7) after halftime, helping them win for the first time this season when trailing at the half (1-8).

With the win and the late-game heroics from Unruh, a sophomore, and huskisson, a freshman, northern Colorado avoided its first three-game home losing streak in four seasons.

“I think our kids took a big step toward growing up,” hill said. “I’ve been complaining about their youth and their inexperience all year, and I think they took a big step in that second half today. It’s always good to get a win, and it’s good to get a win in front of the home crowd.”

MiSSOULA, Mont. -- Mike Proctor led northern Colorado with 14 points thursday night, and redshirt-freshman tevin Svihovec (12 points) scored in double figures for the eighth straight game.

but the bears committed a season-high 28 turnovers, and Montana, led by Will Cherry’s game-high 27 points, ran away with a 76-58 home win at Dahlberg Arena.

Proctor’s put-back at 9:28 in the first half put northern Colorado (6-11, 3-3 big Sky) ahead 28-16 before the Grizzlies (12-6, 5-1) finished the half on a 21-8 to lead 37-36 at the break.

the bears scored just three points in the final 6:40 of the first half and then were able to put just five on the board through the first 13 minutes of the second half and trailed 67-41 with a little more than seven minutes to play.

Proctor continued his solid final season with the bears with a mostly solid stat line—his nine rebounds were the most of any one on the floor, and he also had an assist, a steal and was 4-of-6 from the free-throw line—except in the turnover column, where his career-high-tying seven jump out as a definite black eye.

they added to the most turnovers for a bears team since nov. 27, 2007, when the opponent was Johnson & Wales.

“I think I’ve been a part of one game in 15 years where I’ve had that many turnovers,” northern Colorado coach b.J. hill said. “I’m at a loss for words for the way we were offensively.

“It started in the first half with us. We got a 12-point lead, and we went away from what had gotten us that lead. We played the scoreboard instead of playing the game and what had made us successful to that point.

“then, in the second half, [Montana] just came out, and they had a look upon their faces like, ‘We want to take out the defending champs.’ that’s what our team hasn’t figured out yet: that they have a big ‘x’ on their back, and they have to play every possession like someone’s trying to take everything from them. We don’t play with that type of focus and sense of urgency yet as a team. to me, that was the story.”

tate Unruh and emmanuel Addo finished with eight points apiece for northern Colorado, and Connor osborne chipped in six. Paul Garnica, northern Colorado’s leading scorer coming in at 11.2 points per game, finished with just four thursday and has scored just 12 points in the bears’ past three games.

BOZeMAN, Mont. -- Mike Proctor scored a team-high 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting Saturday night, helping northern Colorado shoot a road season-high 52 percent from the floor at Montana State’s Worthington Arena.

the bobcats knocked down 13 three-pointers, though—opponent three-point shooting has been a bears bugaboo all season—and they cruised to an 84-72 win.

elliott Lloyd and emmanuel Addo scored 13 points for northern Colorado (6-12, 3-4 big Sky), and tevin Svihovec added 12 for the bears, who dropped back-to-back big Sky road games for the first time since last January.

Montana State (10-8, 5-2) became the ninth northern Colorado opponent this season to hit 10 or more three-pointers in a single game, and the third to do it in the bears’ past four games.

Michael Dison came off the bench for Montana State and led all players with 17 points. Christian Moon added 13 for the bobcats, and xavier blount put in 12.

northern Colorado found itself in a 20-7 hole eight minutes into the game and went into halftime down 48-33 when Montana State’s tre Johnson put in a layup as the first-half clock expired.

the bobcats pushed their advantage to 19 five minutes after halftime, at 60-41, before the bears answered with a 10-0 run over the next two minutes to pull within 60-51.

Lloyd scored six of his points in the spurt, and Paul Garnica (six points) and Svihovec added layups.A 13-4 run by Montana State over the next four minutes, however, made the score 73-55 and set

the stage for northern Colorado’s second loss to Montana State in eight meetings, dating back to the 2007-08 season.

the bears made 26 of 50 shots from the floor and shot better overall than the bobcats (52 percent to 44.8 percent), and outrebounded them 32-30, giving them a rebounding edge in seven of eight games.

their three-point shooting defensive struggles made both of those efforts for naught.Proctor’s eight rebounds led northern Colorado and gave him 573 in his career, one shy of John

McFarland (1994-97), who finished his time with the bears with 574 boards and in 10th place in school history.

POCAteLLO, idaho -- tevin Svihovec continued his first-season ascent thursday night with a record-tying performance in northern Colorado’s heartbreaking 99-94 double-overtime loss at Idaho State’s holt Arena.

Svihovec, a redshirt freshman who sat out last season with a foot injury, scored a team-, season- and career-high 30 points in the defeat, which dropped northern Colorado, playing in its first overtime game since February 2010, to 6-13 on the season and 3-5 in big Sky play.

that’s the sixth-highest individual scoring game in the bears’ nCAA Division I history (see chart below) and ties Kirk Archibeque (30 points vs. texas State, Dec. 2004) for the highest scoring game by a northern Colorado freshman at the Division I level.

Svihovec hit 11-of-16 shots from the field in scoring in double figures for the ninth straight game.he also moved into eighth on the big Sky’s scoring-average list in big Sky games (14.3 points per

game) and overshadowed teammate emmanuel Addo, who scored a career-high 28 points off the bench with a 10-of-13 performance from the free-throw line.

Addo’s previous career best was 17 points earlier this season against Johnson & Wales.neither performance could help the bears overcome their 26 turnovers, however, or keep them from

losing three straight big Sky Conference games for the first time since 2008.Chase Grabau led Idaho State (6-14, 4-4) with 30 points of his own, Melvin Morgan added 22 and

Kenny McGowen put up 18. Sherrod baldwin scored just five points for the bengals, but they all came in the second overtime, capped by a 3-pointer with a second left on the shot clock to ice the game with 15 seconds to play.

“ Unfortunately for our guys, they busted their tails, but they just didn’t execute in a couple of key situations when we needed to,” northern Colorado coach b.J. hill said.

Idaho State shot out to an 8-0 lead, which put the bears in a familiar hole after they fell behind 8-1 to Montana State on Saturday night in bozeman, Mont.

A big reason for the early struggles were early turnovers.northern Colorado handed possession over on three of its first four possessions and fell behind 20-9

just seven minutes into the game. the bears, down just 38-35 at halftime, started the second half on a 12-3 run and led 47-41 with 12 minutes left in regulation.

Proctor’s effort tied Weber State’s Frank otis for the most single-game rebounds by a big Sky player this season and tied former bear Reggie York (2000-01) for the most single-game rebounds by a northern Colorado player since 2000.

the program’s previous nCAA Division I single-game rebound record was held by Kirk Archibeque (2003-08), who grabbed 15 in a game against Utah Valley State on Jan. 15, 2005.

York’s performance came against Morningside College on Jan. 6, 2001.Proctor’s came against an nCAA Division I rival, in his native Arizona, and helped the bears (7-13, 4-5

big Sky) snap a three-game losing streak and win for just the second time ever in Flagstaff.It also moved him from 10th to eighth on northern Colorado’s career-rebounds list with 595 in his

four years with the bears.“[Proctor] finished so many big defensive possessions for us by going up and grabbing it with two

hands and being strong with the ball,” northern Colorado coach b.J. hill said. “he took a big step tonight, as did the rest of our team, and he played tremendously well, especially on the defensive end.”

Sophomore guard tate Unruh emerged from a mini-slump with 16 points Monday, and freshman tevin Svihovec scored 11, giving him double-figure points for the 10th straight game.

those two, combined with Proctor and Addo, helped the bears win their first overtime game since Feb. 7, 2010. that victory also came against the Lumberjacks (5-17, 1-9).

northern Colorado improved to 1-4 in road overtime games since 2006.“I’m, obviously, really, really proud of them,” hill said. “I could see the altitude (7,000 feet) affecting

them even before the first media timeout. they just didn’t have the same juice to them. All the travel-ing they’ve done in the last 10 days, I could see it take effect. So, to have it go an extra five minutes and to pull it out is a special effort by a special group of kids.”

the bears led by as many as nine in the second half, at 45-36, before nAU finished regulation on a 20-11 run to force northern Colorado into its second overtime game in as many contests.

FLAGStAFF, Ariz. -- northern Colorado basketball couldn’t have picked a worse time to struggle from the free-throw line.

the bears have been one of the nation’s best charity-stripe benefactors over the last few seasons—they were ranked eighth in the country last season there—but they didn’t resemble that program at all thursday night in a 73-62 setback to Sacramento State at butler-hancock Sports Pavilion.

northern Colorado (7-14, 4-6 big Sky) made just 11 of 28 free-throws in the game and was never able to catch the hornets (7-14, 2-8), who shot out to a 24-8 lead early on and never looked back.

“I don’t know what motivates our guys right now,” northern Colorado coach b.J. hill said. “because this was a game we had to have, and we were at home—hadn’t been home in awhile—and [we] just didn’t have it.”

Redshirt-freshman tevin Svihovec led all the bears with 19 points to finish with double-figure scoring for the 11th straight game, and sophomore Connor osborne added 11 points and tate Unruh pitched in with nine.

Sacramento State got 16 points from Dylan Garrity and 14 from Joe eberhard and knocked off north-ern Colorado for the first time since 2008 and for just the second time ever in Greeley.

the bears pulled within striking distance at nine points a few times in the second half and got to within eight, at 66-58, with 36 seconds to play.

but their 14-point halftime hole proved too much to dig out of.“[our players] just don’t understand yet what conference basketball is all about and the intensity it

takes,” hill said. “I don’t know how many games we’ve played in how many days in the last two weeks, but—it’s an excuse but it’s not—I can see the wear on them over the last 10 days.

“the schedule they’ve played has been tough on them: a double-overtime game, overtime game, flying back here. It’s been tough. I don’t want it to be an excuse, but when you’ve got one senior on a team, two sophomores who haven’t played very much at all … I just don’t know what the deal is with why we come out flat, especially at home. there’s no excuse for that.”

even with the slow start, though, and even with the hornets playing a terrific game on the road, the bears had their chances to avoid a seventh loss at home this season by just putting a few more unguarded freebies into the bottom of the net.

OGDeN, Utah -- Four of northern Colorado’s five starters scored in double-figures Saturday at Weber State, led by tate Unruh’s 17, but the bears’ defense struggled a bit in a 93-82 loss at Dee events Center.

First let’s talk about the good. Unruh made five of 11 from the field and tied a career-high with five 3-pointers, and freshman tim

huskisson scored 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Connor osborne scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds, and tevin Svihovec notched double-digits scoring again with 11.

emmanuel Addo came off the bench with 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds, helping north-ern Colorado (7-15, 4-7 big Sky) win the rebounding battle for the 17th time in 22 tries this season.

the bears also shot 49 percent for the game, made half of their three-point tries (10-20) and put in 13 of 18 free-throw attempts just 48 hours after missing 17 freebies in a frustrating home loss to Sacramento State.

the not so good?Well, Weber State (18-4, 10-1) showed why it’s the top team in the big Sky so far this season with a

scorching first half. the Wildcats shot 60 percent from the floor before halftime (18-30) and led 54-35, scoring more points in the half than any team has against northern Colorado in any half this season.

northern Colorado did “win” the second half, scoring 46 to Weber State’s 39, but the deficit was too much to overcome for coach b.J. hill’s talented but young squad.

“I’m proud of them,” hill said. “they took a big step tonight. Again, we didn’t start off well—gave them way too many points off our turnovers in the first half—but freshman and new sophomores will do that against one of the best big Sky teams I’ve seen in the six years that I’ve been in this league.

“I thought we fought. I thought we continued to fight for 40 minutes. I’m proud of them. We got better, and that’s all that I can ask as a coach: that they get better every time they take the floor.”

the Wildcats’ Damian Lillard, the nation’s leading scorer and a potential nbA first-round draft pick this spring, finished with 35 points on 12-of-18 shooting. he also dished out a team-high five assists.

Scott bamforth backed him for Weber State with 18 points.the bears were down 21-9 six minutes into the game but went on an 8-2 run over the next two min-

utes to pull within six, at 23-17, with 11:50 to play. After withstanding Weber State’s initial haymaker, hill’s group seemed like it was poised to put up a fight in a tough road environment.

the Wildcats finished the half with a 31-18 run, though, and then started the second half with an 11-5 run to take complete control at 65-39.

GAME 23: MONTANA 75, NORTHERN COLORADO 68thursday, Feb. 9 -- Greeley, Colo. (Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion)

GReeLeY -- As it has more than a few times this season, northern Colorado basketball took a big and early punch to the chin in the first few minutes thursday night of its 75-68 loss to Montana at butler-hancock Sports Pavilion.

the Grizzlies hit their first five 3-pointers and missed just one shot (from the floor or the free-throw line) through the game’s first seven-plus minutes and led 25-13 before the bears even knew what hit them.

At that point it looked like Montana (18-6, 11-1 big Sky) was going to run roughshod all over the home team.

but, unlike its done very often this year, b.J. hill’s young northern Colorado squad (7-16, 4-8) picked itself up off the mat and shoved right back, taking a lead about six minutes later, at 26-25, and led by as many as seven in the second half, at 46-39.

the bears just couldn’t sustain that momentum against one of the big Sky’s best teams this season and faded down the stretch. they surrendered 27 turnovers in the loss—that’s 55 giveaways in two games against Montana this season—and just looked dazed and frustrated toward the end after having so much success early on.

“We showed that we can take a punch and throw one back, and [we] executed really well,” hill said. “We did what we practiced and what we game-planned. And then Montana does what good programs and what teams that are fighting for championships do: they counterpunched and cranked up their intensity. that’s the next step that our young team needs to learn how to do.

“our problem is that right now we don’t do a good job of adjusting on the go, in terms of going, ‘oK they’re going to go to a three-quarters court press, we’ve turned it over a couple times, this is what we need to do.’ We didn’t do that tonight.”

Mike Proctor led the bears with a career-high 18 points. he made six of eight shots from the field and converted six of his eight free-throw tries. he’s elevated his game in his final run through the big Sky slate, and he’s up to and 11 points and eight rebounds-per-game average.

Sophomore tate Unruh scored 11 points in the first half thursday and continued his surge of late with 15 points overall.

Connor osborne added 12 points, two blocks and led all players with seven rebounds as northern Colorado (the big Sky’s best rebounding team) outrebounded Montana 33-24.

GReeLeY -- the overall results this season haven’t quite been what northern Colorado basketball fans had gotten used to over the last few seasons, but the bears provided another glimpse Saturday afternoon into a future that seems filled with promise.

northern Colorado downed Montana State 77-64 in overtime, handing the bobcats (11-13, 6-7) their fourth straight loss in Greeley and avenging a 84-72 road loss earlier this year to Montana State.

but that only tells part of the story.to get a full feel for what the bears (8-16, 5-8 big Sky) pulled off, take a look a little deeper into the

box score.there you’ll see a dominant offensive effort in a come-from-behind win from a team that was led in

scoring by two sophomores (tate Unruh and emmanuel Addo) and a freshman (tevin Svihovec).Unruh scored a game-high 20 points and didn’t miss a 3-pointer (4-4), Svihovec added 15 points and

dished out a career-high five assists, and Addo scored 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including making all two of his three-point tries.

those three led a bears’ effort that ended with a 63 percent night from beyond the three-point arc (10-16), scored 22 points in the five-minute overtime period alone and won a game after trailing at halftime for just the second time this season.

head coach b.J. hill’s “baby bears” came into Saturday leading the nation in three-point shooting (43.7 percent) and likely distanced themselves even farther from second place with their sizzling performance.

“I really thought we were going to pull it out in regulation, but, heck, it went to overtime and our guys played great,” Unruh said. “We fought hard and pulled it out in the end. It was a great win. We just came out and kind of punched them in the mouth in the second half and got our mojo back. And, gosh, everyone contributed. that was such a great team win [and] fun to be a part of.”

Montana State led 42-28 three minutes into the second half and seemed well on its way toward winning in Greeley for the first time since 2007.

the bears flipped a switch, though, and finished the game on an amazing 49-22 run. they shot just 35 percent in the first half (7-20) but found their rhythm after halftime and hit 59 percent from the floor (13-22) in the second half.

GAME 25: E. WASHINGTON 79, NORTHERN COLORADO 76Wednesday, Feb. 15 -- Cheney, Wash. (Reese Court)

MeN’S BASKetBALL GiVeS ONe AWAY tO eASteRN WASHiNGtON

CHeNeY, Wash. -- Parker Kelly’s 3-pointer with 14 seconds remaining Wednesday night put eastern Washington ahead for good and sent northern Colorado basketball home with a numbing 79-76 loss at Reese Court.

the bears (8-17, 5-9 big Sky) led 50-33 early in the second half and seemed on the verge of downing the eagles (12-14, 6-7) for the sixth straight time.

but Kelly, who scored all nine of his points after halftime, and Collin Chiverton, who scored 14 of his 22 points after the break, had other ideas and led eastern Washington past northern Colorado for the first time since 2009.

Redshirt-sophomore Connor osborne led the bears with a career-high 17 points and team-high seven rebounds, and tate Unruh added 16 points on 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the three-point stripe.

Paul Garnica came off the bench with 14 points, giving northern Colorado coach b.J. hill double-digit points for the first time since Jan. 2 (Idaho State).

“[the eagles] made some big-time shots,” hill said to 1310-AM KFKA following the game. “We wanted them to hit threes, but we gave up too many easy baskets in the second half. We had a little lack of communication defensively.

“bottom line is: what you saw is a young team that hadn’t been in this specific situation. each game seems to be a new test with these guys, and this was a new test they hadn’t been in: up double-digits, on the road … how do you put your foot on somebody’s throat and finish a game? We didn’t respond well. When they turned up the pressure we didn’t handle it real well.

“to me, that was the difference. When [eastern Washington] cranked it up, we didn’t play with the same type of confidence and poise that we did in the first half.”

the bears in the last couple weeks have moved to the top line nationally in three-point field-goal percentage, and that number got even better Wednesday (from 44.5 percent to 45.2 percent) with a 10-of-16 effort, including Unruh and Garnica’s 8-of-11 night.

the bears shot 45.7 percent from the floor before halftime and made seven of their first eight long-range tries to take a 43-29 lead into the break.

northern Colorado led by 16, at 62-46, with 11:25 to play when Garnica banged home a three, but it scored just five points in the next seven minutes and held only a two-point lead, at 67-65, with 4:55 remaining.

GReeLeY -- there’s been a lot of focus this season on what northern Colorado basketball doesn’t have.

the bears entered the season coming off an incredible two-year run that saw them set a school record for wins in 2010 and earn last season their first-ever big Sky Conference regular-season and postseason championships and nCAA tournament berth.

northern Colorado also began this season without some program stalwarts that helped them author those memorable seasons. And it has seemed like the bears have been suffering from a bit of a hang-over from all those good memories in the last two years.

And if so, it seems like the bears’ 81-73 victory against Cal Poly on Saturday night, part of eSPn brack-etbusters, might be the perfect time for northern Colorado fans to turn their gaze toward the future.

because it was here tonight that guard tevin Svihovec did something that no one else has—no one!—in the bears’ nCAA Division I history.

he scored 34 points against the Mustangs (15-13) at butler-hancock Sports Pavilion, surpassing the 33 points Will Figures put in Feb. 13, 2010, which for more than two years had been northern Colorado’s high-water mark.

Figures is one of the great players in northern Colorado basketball history, and he was a senior in that game.

Svihovec? he’s a redshirt-freshman, who played in just his 26th collegiate basketball game Saturday.“tevin makes you a lot better coach,” northern Colorado coach b.J. hill said. “he’s a special kid, and

I think what does it, what gives him the confidence to go out and make those plays, is his level of mental maturity and mental toughness for a redshirt freshman far surpasses any other freshman I’ve ever had the chance to coach.”

“I had fun, playing and doing that,” Svihovec said. “My teammates just fed me the ball, and I felt good, and I felt like they were confident in me, and we played together and got a great win.”

“tevinsanity!,” emmanuel Addo added, in homage to current new York Knick Jeremy Lin and the “Linsanity” craze sweeping the nbA . “he was hot, and we just tried to give him the ball whenever we could, and he put us on his back and carried us to victory.”
