PITTSBURGH STEELERS (6-3) VS. KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (2-7) REGULAR SEASON GAME #10 SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 22, 2009 – 12:00 PM (CENTRAL) ARROWHEAD STADIUM – KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI 2009 Stats and NFL Rankings THE SERIES THE MATCH-UP The Chiefs enjoy their initial home conest in a month as Kansas City hosts the Steelers on Sunday. Pittsburgh is making its first visit to Kansas City since the Chiefs registered a 41-20 victory over the Steelers at Arrowhead (9/14/03). Kansas City is coming off a 16-10 win at Oakland (11/15) and is seeking to register back-to-back victories for the first time since accomplishing the feat in the final two games of the 2006 campaign. Pittsburgh had a five-game winning streak snapped after suffering a 18-12 loss vs. Cincinnati (11/15). The Chiefs defense allowed just 90 net passing yards at Oakland (11/15) and forced 11 punts, a mark that tied as the second-highest single-game total in franchise annals. Kansas City also limited the Raiders to two of 16 on third down (12.5%) and ranks fourth in the NFL, forcing three and outs at a 29.5% clip. RB Jamaal Charles had a season-high 103 rushing yards vs. the Raiders. Kansas City has won two of its last three home meetings with the Steelers. However, Pittsburgh owns the distinction of being the only AFC club that has visited Arrowhead more than once to boast a winning record with a 9-4 (.692) all-time mark at Arrowhead. Sunday’s contest will mark Todd Haley’s first-ever encounter with the Steelers as an NFL head coach. A graduate of Upper St. Clair High School in Pittsburgh, Haley is the son of legendary Steelers personnel man Dick Haley, who played a pivotal role in the acquisition of 10 Pittsburgh players who are now enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The younger Haley grew up immersed in the Steelers Super Bowl teams of the ’70s, serving in numerous capacities with the club during training camp and on gameday. Haley’s most recent encounter with the Black and Gold came in Super Bowl XLIII when he served as the offensive coordinator of the Arizona Cardinals. Arizona waged a furious fourth-quarter comeback, scoring 16 unanswered points to take a 23-20 lead with 2:37 remaining in the contest. However, the Steelers would answer as QB Ben Roethlisberger connected with WR Santonio Holmes for a six-yard TD with 0:35 left to play to give Pittsburgh a 27-23 lead and its sixth Super Bowl title. Up next for Kansas City is a division road contest at San Diego (11/29), while Pittsburgh travels to Baltimore (11/29). Kansas City is 9-17-0 (.346) all time against Pittsburgh in the 26 previous meetings between the two clubs (25 regular season, one postseason). Eight of the last nine meetings between the two franchises have come at Arrowhead, with the Chiefs winning the last matchup in Kansas City by a 41-20 margin (9/14/03). Pittsburgh claimed a 45-7 victory in the most recent meeting between the two squads in KC’s debut at Heinz Field (10/15/06). Kansas City produced a 27-24 OT win in the only postseason contest between the two squads, a ’93 AFC Wild Card contest at Arrowhead (1/8/94). Neither team has won back-to- back games in this series since Pittsburgh won four straight from ’87-92. KANSAS CITY VS. KC’S COVERAGE UNITS HAVE BEEN SPECIAL Kansas City, Houston and Washington are the only NFL teams that rank in the league’s top 10 in both punt and kickoff coverage. The Chiefs are third in punt coverage, allowing 5.0 yards per return. Kansas City ranks sixth in kickoff coverage, permitting 20.7 yards per return. The Chiefs have made substantial improvement in both those areas from 2008. KC ranked 16th in punt coverage (9.3 avg.) a year ago and was 22nd in kickoff coverage (23.6).

Mike Tomlin was named the 16th head coach in Steelers history on January 22, 2007. In his second campaign in 2008, Tomlin led Pittsburgh to a 12-4 record and a victory in Super Bowl XLIII. At 36 years, 323 days, he became the youngest coach in NFL history to win a Super Bowl. He led the Steelers to a 10-6 record and AFC North title in 2007, making him the only Steelers coach in history to win divisional titles in each of his first two years as head coach.

Before moving to the head coaching role in Pittsburgh, Tomlin spent one season as defensive coordinator in Minnesota (2006) after coaching defensive backs in Tampa Bay (2001-05). He began his coaching career at the Virginia Military Institute (’95) before becoming a graduate assistant at Memphis (’96). He then coached the wide receivers (’97) and defensive backs (’98) at Arkansas State. Tomlin finished his collegiate coaching career overseeing the defensive backs at the University of Cincinnati (’99-00).

Born in Hampton, Virginia on March 15, 1972, Tomlin was a wide receiver at William and Mary (’90-93), finishing his collegiate career with 101 receptions for 2,046 yards and a school-record 20 TDs. Chiefs head coach Todd Haley is the son of longtime NFL personnel man Dick Haley. One of the architects of the great Steelers teams of the ’70s, Haley had a hand in scouting and/or drafting 10 different Pittsburgh players who are now enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Those 10 players were selected to a total of 67 Pro Bowls during their respective careers and are the owners of a combined 37 Super Bowl rings, including one earned by CB Rod Woodson with Baltimore in 2000. The elder Haley’s ’74 draft class with Pittsburgh featured four Hall of Famers – LB Jack Lambert, C Mike Webster, as well as WRs Lynn Swann and John Stallworth. Thanks to a host of Haley acquisitions, the Steelers would claim four Super Bowl crowns over a six-year span from ’74-79. Dick Haley was a standout halfback at the University of Pittsburgh and spent six seasons playing RB/CB in the NFL with Washington (’59-60), Minnesota (’61) and Pittsburgh (’61-64).

P DUSTIN COLQUITT IS “NETTING” RESULTS Since the AFL-NFL merger in ’70, Kansas City P Dustin Colquitt ranks second in career net punting average with a 38.85-yard mark per kick. He is third in the NFL with a 41.52-yard net punting average in 2009. Colquitt owns the KC career record with 131 punts inside the 20-yard line, including an NFL-high 27 this season. Cleveland P Dave Zastudil (25) plays on Monday Night Football. Colquitt is on pace to fi nish the year with 48 punts inside the 20 which would shatter P Louie Aguiar’s Kansas City single-season record of 29 set in ’95. Colquitt is the son of former Steelers P Craig Colquitt (’70-84).

Chiefs Rank Among the NFL’s Best in the Turnover Column The Chiefs are tied for fourth in the NFL, committing just 10 turnovers in 2009. KC has thrown six INTs to tie for the fi fth-lowest total in the league. Opponents have scored 16 points off Chiefs giveaways. Only Baltimore (13) and Indianapolis (15) have relinquished fewer points after turnovers and no team has given up a lower percentage of its total points off giveaways than KC (7.4%). Dating back to ’90, the Chiefs boast the NFL’s best turnover differential at +160. Pittsburgh is a distant second at +86. Over that span, Kansas City (632) is the only team that has forced more takeaways than Pittsburgh (631), while no squad has committed fewer giveaways than Kansas City (472). Pittsburgh is 36-2 (.947) with a positive turnover ratio dating back to 2004 when Dick LeBeau returned to the club as defensive coordinator. Pittsburgh is 15-1 (.938) with a positive turnover ratio under Mike Tomlin, including a string of 11 consecutive wins. The Steelers have won 15 consecutive road games with a positive turnover margin dating back to a 13-3 win at Miami (9/26/04). Pittsburgh has been negative in its last fi ve losses dating back to 2008. Both Kansas City and Pittsburgh were -1 in their games last week with different results. GIVEAWAY POINTS ALLOWED PCT. Past Precedent First-Half, Second-Half Turnarounds In 2008, 11 teams had a losing record in the fi rst half of the season. Four of those 11 teams - Cincinnati (4-3-1), Houston (5-3), San Diego (5-3) and San Francisco (5-3) - rebounded to produce a winning record in the second half of the 2008 season. The Chiefs would love to emulate the second-half efforts of those clubs, especially since three of those four teams currently have a winning record in 2009: Cincinnati (7-2), Houston (5-3) and San Diego (6-3). More Dramatic Stats on P Dustin Colquitt, KC’s Special Teams No NFL punter has forced more fair catches than P Dustin Colquitt (17) and no NFL punter has had more of his punts downed than Colquitt (14). In fact, the next-closest competitor in that department is N.Y. Jets P Steve Weatherford (9). Thanks in large part to Colquitt, Kansas City ranks third in the NFL, allowing just 5.0 yards per punt return. The Chiefs have also been consistent in kickoff coverage, ranking sixth in the league in that department, permitting just 20.7 yards per kickoff return. Chiefs rookie K Ryan Succop has connected on 14 FGs, the second-highest total by a Chiefs rookie behind only the 21 made FGs established by Hall of Fame K Jan Stenerud in ’67. Succop has a pair of FGs from 50+ yards in 2009. Only K Nick Lowery has topped that total. Lowery had four 50-yard FGs in ’80 and made three 50-yard FGs in ’85 and ’88. Chiefs-Steelers Rushing Stats to Watch Kansas City is allowing 31.0 fewer rushing ypg and has relinquished fi ve fewer rushing TDs than it did at the nine-game mark in 2008. Pittsburgh is allowing a league-low 69.3 rushing ypg. The Steelers have gone 27 consecutive games without permitting a 100-yard rusher, the second-longest active streak in the NFL. Minnesota has gone 32 straight contests without permitting a 100-yard back. Ex-Jaguars RB Fred Taylor was the last runner to top the century mark against the Steelers, doing it in a 29-22 win vs. Pittsburgh (12/16/07). The Chiefs boast a pair of players with 100-yard outings at Arrowhead on their resumes. RB Jamaal Charles also had 106 yards vs. Tampa Bay (11/2/08), while RB Kolby Smith had 150 yards vs. Oakland (11/25/07). Charles is coming off a season-high 103-yard performance after tying a career-high 18 carries in a 16-10 win at Oakland (11/5). Charles recorded a career-long 44-yard TD run in that contest, KC’s longest TD run since RB Larry Johnson had a 49-yard score vs. Cincinnati (1/1/06). Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall owns a pair of 100-yard performances this season, including a 165-yard, two-TD outing in a 38-28 win vs. San Diego (10/4). The Steelers have allowed two rushing TDs, a mark that ties with Minnesota as the lowest in the NFL. Pittsburgh is 37-3 (.925) when producing a 100-yard rusher dating back to 2004, including eight straight wins. Third-Down, Other Stats in the Kansas City-Pittsburgh Matchup KC’s defense is fourth in the league, forcing three and outs at a 29.5% clip (33 on 112 possessions). Only Houston (34.9), NYJ (33.0) and MIN (30.8) are better. PIT’s offense is tied for 12th in the league with a 41.7 conversion rate on third down. PIT’s defense is 24th on third down at 40.8%. PIT ranks in the NFL’s top 10 in both total offense (ninth - 364.7 ypg) and total defense (second - 277.4 ypg). PIT is ninth in the NFL with 32 completions of 20+ yards.

Pittsburgh is a Familiar Foe for Kansas City at Arrowhead The Steelers are the only AFC team to own a winning record at Arrowhead with two or more regular season appearances there with a 9-4 (.692) mark (regular and postseason). Pittsburgh is 11-9 (.550) on the road under Mike Tomlin. The Steelers have lost three of their last fi ve road games, but produced a 28-10 win at Denver (11/9) in their most recent road contest. Tomlin will make his debut at Arrowhead as an NFL head coach. KC is 25-11 (.694) against head coaches making their regular season debuts at Arrowhead since ’94. Chiefs-Steelers Scoring Stats Dating back to ’95, Kansas City is 56-11 (.836) at Arrowhead when holding opponents to 21 points or less and is 48-4 (.923) at home over that same span when limiting foes to 17 points or less. Pittsburgh owns a 28-13 (.683) record under head coach Mike Tomlin. The Steelers have been held to 21 points or less in 11 of those 13 losses under Tomlin, including a 18-12 loss vs. Cincinnati (11/15). The Steelers are 22-3 (.880) under Tomlin when scoring 21 points or more, including a streak of 13 straight victories. The Steelers are 22-2 (.917) under Tomlin when holding opponents to 17 points or less. Pittsburgh currently ranks fi fth in the NFL in scoring defense, allowing 17.4 ppg. However, the Steelers have allowed an NFL-high seven return TDs, meaning their defense is permitting an NFL-low 12.2 actual offensive points per game. KC has been outscored by a 103-53 margin in four home contests this season, an average margin of 25.8 to 13.3 ppg. The Chiefs have held their opponents to 20 points or less in their last eight victories. Chiefs, Steelers Have Both Been Involved in Some Close Calls The Chiefs and Steelers are both 1-3 in games decided by seven points or less in 2009. Kansas City’s 16-10 win at Oakland (11/15) was the club’s fi rst win in such a circumstance under Todd Haley. Pittsburgh’s lone win in a close game this season came by a 13-10 count vs. Tennessee (9/10). Pittsburgh’s three losses in 2009 have come by a combined 12 points (4.0 ppg). The Steelers have scored 27 points or more in fi ve of their six wins this season, averaging 26.8 ppg in those wins, while allowing just 16.5 ppg. In three losses, Pittsburgh has been outscored 19.3 to 15.3. A Fast Start is Imperative Against Pittsburgh The Chiefs will face a Pittsburgh squad that has allowed an NFL-low 15 points in the fi rst quarter. Kansas City has scored 12 points in the fi rst quarter in 2009, but owns fi rst-quarter FGs in each of its last two games. The Chiefs have led at halftime in three games in 2009, winning two of those games. KC held a 10-3 edge in a 26-20 OT loss vs. Dallas (10/11), a 3-0 advantage in a 14-6 win at Washington (10/18) and last week’s 16-10 win at Oakland (11/15). Pittsburgh is 24-5 (.828) when tied or leading at halftime under Mike Tomlin, but just 4-8 (.333) when trailing at intermission. Pittsburgh led 9-6 vs. Cincinnati (11/5). Pittsburgh is 23-4 (.852) when leading after three quarters under Tomlin, but is just 5-9 (.357) when tied or trailing entering the fourth quarter. The Chiefs have scored 49.3% of their points in the fourth quarter (70 of 142). Only seven teams have scored more points in the fi nal period. Only six clubs have permitted more fourth-quarter points than Kansas City (69) and Pittsburgh (68). The Steelers have allowed 43.3% of their points (68 of 157) in the fi nal quarter. QB Matt Cassel Seeking Initial Victory at Arrowhead Chiefs QB Matt Cassel is seeking to register his initial victory at Arrowhead. Cassel has thrown 10 TDs and is on pace to fi nish the year with 18 TDs which would be the highest total by a Chiefs passer since QB Trent Green had 27 TD passes in 2004. Cassel has thrown just six INTs, compared to eight INTs for Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger. The Chiefs will face a Pittsburgh defense that is tied for fourth in the league with 25.0 sacks. Pittsburgh has allowed 27.0 sacks, while the Chiefs have permitted 32.0. Cassel owns a 4-1 record as a starter when he posts a rating of 100.0 or better. He completed a season-high four passes of 20+ yards at Oakland (11/15) and has seven 20-yard completions in the Chiefs last two contests. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger Makes His Arrowhead Debut Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger will make his initial NFL start at Arrowhead on Sunday. The only other AFC venue where he has yet to play is Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo. Roethlisberger owns a 57-23 (.713) regular season record as an NFL starter, including a 25-14 (.641) mark on the road. He will become the ninth different signal caller to open a regular season contest at Arrowhead. The last two Steelers QBs to make their fi rst start with the Steelers at Arrowhead both left Kansas City with a loss. QB Tommy Maddox completed 28 of 47 passes for 336 yards with one TD and three INTs (62.0 rating) in a 41-20 loss at Arrowhead (9/14/03). QB Kordell Stewart completed 11 of 21 passes for 101 yards with one TD and one INT (61.8 rating) in a 13-10 loss (11/3/97). Roethlisberger owns a 23-2 (.920) record when compiling a rating of 100.0 or better (min. 20 atts.). He has produced a 100.0+ rating in four of his last six starts. He also owns a 27-7 (.794) record when throws two or more TDs. Dating back to ’95, KC has registered at least one game with two INTs at Arrowhead in every season over that span. During that timeframe, the Chiefs are 33-4 (.892) when forcing two or more INTs. S Mike Brown had two INTs at Oakland (11/15). Roethlisberger is 6-14 (.300) in games when he suffers two or more INTs. In his only previous appearance against KC, Roethlisberger completed 16 of 19 passes for 238 yards with two TDs in a 45-7 victory (10/15/06). Pittsburgh currently ranks eighth in the NFL, averaging 253.3 passing ypg.

Kansas City traveled to Pittsburgh for the first time since ’89 and found a hostile crowd and a desperate opponent awaiting its arrival. After bouncing back from an early 14-0 deficit a week earlier at Arizona, the Chiefs were unable to repeat that feat for a second consecutive contest. The Steelers dominated from the game’s outset, jumping out to a 31-0 halftime lead en route to a 45-7 victory. Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger registered his first win of the season, connecting on 16 of 19 passes for 238 yards and two TDs, finishing the contest with a 153.8 rating. Pittsburgh RB Willie Parker rushed for 109 yards and added a pair of scores. Pittsburgh started its scoring barrage on the game’s initial possession. The Steelers were facing a third-and-11 when Roethlisberger hit WR Santonio Holmes on a quick pass. Kansas City CB Ty Law came up to make the tackle, but slipped and Holmes raced downfield for a 50-yard gain. Parker capped the drive with a three-yard run, giving Pittsburgh a 7-0 lead. The Steelers struck paydirt again on their third possession when Roethisberger found WR Nate Washington wide open in the Chiefs secondary for a 47-yard score. The touchdown gave Pittsburgh a 14-0 advantage late in the first quarter. Another Parker TD minutes later put Pittsburgh ahead 21-0. Pittsburgh added another scoring drive before the half came to a close set up by RB Najeh Davenport’s 44-yard run. The Steelers then went back to the air as WR Hines Ward caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Roethlisberger to widen the Steelers margin to 28-0. A 32-yard field goal from K Jeff Reed mercifully ended the first half as Pittsburgh held a dominating 31-0 lead heading into the intermission. Kansas City’s defense tried to get the club back into the contest in the second half. DE Tamba Hali forced a Parker fumble that was recovered by LB Kawika Mitchell. However, the Chiefs couldn’t produce any points from the turnover, handing the ball back to the Steelers when S Troy Polamalu intercepted a QB Damon Huard pass. The Chiefs mounted their best drive of the day during the third quarter. Huard started to heat up, finding WRs Eddie Kennison and Samie Parker for big gains. RB Larry Johnson capped the drive with a determined two-yard scoring run when he carried a host of Pittsburgh defenders into the end zone. The score cut the Steelers lead to 31-7. Kansas City’s momentum would be short-lived. Hali would force his second Parker fumble on the day, but the ball bounced into the hands of G Chris Kemoeatu to keep the ball in Pittsburgh’s possession. The Steelers would go on to produce a 13-play, 62-yard drive that resulted in a one-yard TD from Dav-enport on fourth-and-goal. Steelers LB Rian Wallace capped the scoring when he returned a QB Brodie Croyle interception for a 30-yard TD, making the final score 45-7.

GAME NOTES• G Will Shields played in his 213th regular season game as a member of the Chiefs, bypassing K Nick Lowery (212) for the most games played in franchise history. DE Tamba Hali tallies 10 tackles and two FFs.

THE LAST GAMEChiefsChiefs 16, 16, RaidersRaiders 1010

November 15, 2009 • Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum • 40,720

The Chiefs made critical plays at crucial junctures to claim their seventh consecutive victory at Oakland. Kansas City produced a 16-10 win at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum as S Mike Brown clinched the victory with an INT with 0:38 remaining, his second INT of the day. RB Jamaal Charles finished the contest with a season-high 103 yards, including a 44-yard TD run, while K Ryan Succop banged through three FGs.

Raiders RB Michael Bush scampered for 60 yards down to the Kansas City four-yard line on the second play from scrimmage. Bush’s run set up a one-yard RB Justin Fargas TD two plays later, giving the Raiders the 7-0 lead with 12:42 left in the first quarter.

Following Oakland’s opening-drive score, QB Matt Cassel looked for WR Chris Chambers deep down the right sideline on third and 12 on the Chiefs opening drive, but his pass was intercepted by CB Chris Johnson.

It was punt-for-punt before Cassel sparked the offense with a 30-yard pass to Chambers. The drive stalled, setting up a 50-yard Succop FG to make the score 7-3 with 4:54 left in the first quarter.

KC forced Oakland three and out, but the momentum shifted right back to the Raiders as Chiefs RB Dantrell Savage muffed the punt which was recovered by LB Jon Condo at the KC 37-yard line. Oakland settled for its own 50-yard FG by K Sebastian Janikowski, making the score 10-3 with 2:10 left in the first quarter.

Faced with fourth and one at the Oakland 44-yard line, head coach Todd Haley left his offense on the field, and Charles reeled off a 44-yard TD run to tie the score at 10-10 with 12:25 left in the first half.

After another Raiders punt, Cassel went to work finding WR Dwayne Bowe for 41 yards down the left sideline to get in Oakland territory on the opening play of KC’s ensuing drive. Cassel then hit Chambers for 24 yards to move the ball to the Oakland seven-yard line. The drive stalled bringing out Succop for a 25-yard FG that gave KC a 13-10 lead with 6:48 left in the first half.

On their first possession in the second half, the Chiefs penetrated as deep as the Raiders 37-yard line. Succop’s 52-yard FG try sailed wide left, leaving the score 13-10 with 10:43 to go in the third quarter. Oakland could not take advantage as Janikowski misfired his own 45-yard attempt wide left, his initial miss of the year.

On Kansas City’s ensuing possession, Cassel hit Bowe for 12 yards, but Bowe had the ball jarred lose as he was being tackled. Multiple players from both squads attempted to gain possession of the ball before Chiefs G Brian Waters jumped on it at the Oakland 32-yard line to regain possession. But Kansas City would give it away on downs after failing to convert a fourth-and-one pass from the Oakland 14-yard line.

On Oakland’s next possession, Brown registered the Chiefs first takeaway of the day as he intercepted QB Bruce Gradkowski’s pass intended for WR Johnny Lee Higgins. Cassel then orchestrated an eight-play drive that ended in Succop’s third field goal of the contest, this time from 31 yards out to extend the Kansas City lead to 16-10 with 6:17 left to play in the game. After a three and out by the Raiders, Kansas City got the ball back with 4:38 remaining and was able to run the clock down to the two-minute warning before giving the Raiders one final opportunity.

The Raiders took over at their own 20-yard line with 1:53 left to play. A 22-yard completion to WR Darrius Heyward-Bey that was upheld by a replay review moved the ball to the Kansas City 26-yard line with 0:38 remaining. Brown then hauled in his second interception at the 10-yard line, sealing a 16-10 victory.
