Eleni, wrth i ni barhau i dyfu a newid fel esgobaeth, rwy’n eich gwahodd i ystyried eich galwedigaeth i wasanaethu Duw, gan ddefnyddio’r adnoddau yn y llyfryn hwn i’ch harwain drwy’r Grawys.

This Lent, as we continue to grow and change as a diocese, I invite you reflect on your calling to serve God, using the resources in this booklet to guide your thoughts and prayers.

Bob wythnos, fe fydd yr adnoddau a geir yma yn rhoi cyfle i chi oedi, ac archwilio gwahanol agwedd ar eich perthynas â Duw. Gallwch wneud hyn yn unigol neu fel rhan o grŵp. Mae nhw fel ‘gorsafoedd’ ar daith ffydd ac fe’u lluniwyd i uniaethu eich profiad chi o ffydd â darlleniadau’r Efengyl i bob Sul yn ystod y Grawys.

Wrth wraidd y llyfryn hwn ceir cwestiwn canolog: ‘Beth mae Duw yn fy ngalw i i fod a gwneud yn ystod rhan nesaf fy mywyd i?’ Mae’n gwestiwn pwysig ac anodd i bawb sydd wedi eu galw i ddilyn Crist fel disgyblion a gweinidogion yr Efengyl. Yn y gorffennol defnyddid y gair ‘galwedigaeth’ i’r rhai hynny oedd yn teimlo eu bod wedi’u galw i fod yn offeiriad neu’n Ddarllenydd. Heddiw rydym yn cydnabod bod gan bob un ohonom alwedigaeth i ddilyn Crist a defnyddio’r doniau mae ef wedi eu rhoi i ni yn ei wasanaeth.

Wrth feddwl a gweddïo am sut y gallai Duw fod yn ein galw i fod yn ddisgybl iddo ac yn weinidog ei Efengyl, mae angen yn aml i ni edrych yn ôl yn ogystal ag ymlaen. Gwnawn hynny am y cawn drafferth gweld beth mae Duw yn ein galw i fod a gwneud yn y dyfodol heb i ni geisio deall sut y mae wedi llywio ein bywydau yn y gorffennol. Felly fe fydd pob ‘gorsaf’ ar y daith hon drwy’r Grawys yn rhoi cyfle i chi feddwl am eich bywyd eich hun yng ngoleuni stori’r Efengyl, gan adael i golau hwnnw hefyd oleuo’r ffordd ymlaen.

Rwy’n cymeradwyo’r deunudd yma, ac yn dymuno pob bendith arnoch y Grways hwn.

Week by week this booklet will give an opportunity for you to pause and explore a different aspect of your relationship with God. You can do this individually or as part of a group. They are like ‘stations’ on the journey of faith and they are designed to relate your own experience of faith to the Gospel readings for each Sunday in Lent.

At the heart of this set of resources is a central question: ‘What is God calling me to do and to be during the next part of my life?’ It is an important yet difficult question for everyone who is called to follow Christ as a disciple and a minister of the Gospel. A while ago the word ‘vocation’ was used only for those who felt called to be a priest or a Reader. Now we recognize that each and every one of us has a vocation to follow Christ and to use the gifts that he has given us in his service.

When thinking and praying about the ways in which God may be calling us to be his disciple and a minister of his Gospel, it is often necessary for us to look backwards as well as forward. This is because it is often difficult to see what God is calling us to be and do in the future until we can see how he has guided our lives in the past. Therefore each ‘station’ on this journey through Lent will give you an opportunity to think about your own life in the light of the Gospel story, and to allow this light to lighten your future steps.

I commend this material to you, and assure you of my prayers this Lent.

Mae’r ciwbiau stori wedi cael eu defnyddio i helpu pobl i fyfyrio ar eu bywydau ffydd o’r blaen; mae llawer o ddisgyblion o bob oed wedi’u cael yn ffordd fuddiol o archwilio sut mae Duw wedi cyffwrdd â’u bywydau yn y gorffennol a sut y gall fod yn eu galw i waith newydd yn y dyfodol.

These story cubes have been used to help people reflect on their lives of faith before; many disciples of all ages have found them a helpful way to explore how God has touched their lives in the past and how he may be calling them to new work in the future.

One resource that may help you in this process is the cardboard story cube. This is of course a box with six sides and it will open up to form a cross.

Ciwbiau stori / Story cubes

• The cubes have six sides so that every week during Lent you could attach images, pictures, words or phrases on each side of the cube relating to the theme of this week. Those of you who like to express yourself in this way may find this really helpful.

• The cube has a lid so it is possible to insert items, you could therefore insert prayers, notes, important objects or pictures.

• The cube opens up to form a cross. Cubes could therefore be displayed in church or used in an act of worship.

• The cubes can also be stacked together. They have been used to form an altar or a shelter or a prayer wall.

You could therefore use the story cubes in a number of different ways this Lent. Some may enjoy decorating each of the six sides to represent important truths that have emerged from each week’s learning and sharing. Some may prefer to place items of meaning to themselves within the cube. Some groups may decide to work on a cube or cubes together while others may prefer to work on their cubes as individuals. Some may find this whole process unhelpful and may feel that they would prefer to leave the construction of the cubes to others!

Please surround your time of reflection with worship and prayer and be prepared to use the resources creatively. You don’t have to explore all the questions in this booklet every week.

Efengyl yr wythnos hon

Yn dilyn ei fedydd ac ar ôl clywed Duw yn siarad amdano fel ‘yr Anwylyd’, mae Iesu yn cael ei yrru allan gan yr Ysbryd i’r anialwch i gael ei demtio gan Satan. Wedyn mae ei weinidogaeth yn dechrau ac mae’n galw ar y bobl i edifarhau a chlywed y Newyddion Da.

St Marc 1:9-15

Bryd hynny: Daeth Iesu o Nasareth Galilea, a bedyddiwyd ef yn afon Iorddonen gan Ioan. Ac yna, wrth iddo godi allan o’r dŵr, gwelodd y nefoedd yn rhwygo’n agored a’r Ysbryd fel colomen yn disgyn arno. A daeth llais o’r nefoedd: ‘Ti yw fy Mab, yr Anwylyd; ynot ti yr wyf yn ymhyfrydu.’

This week’s Gospel

Following his baptism, and hearing God speak of him being ‘the Beloved’, Jesus is driven out by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan. Then his ministry begins and he calls the people to repent and hear the Good News.

St Mark 1:9-15

At that time: Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.’

And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness for forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.’

Questions for personal or group reflection

Thinking about baptism

• Remembering – our own baptism and the story of that occasion as told to us. If baptism was more recent, what memories are brought to mind when thought about, or upon looking at the font? What might it mean to be ‘born again’ through the waters of baptism?

• Calling – when we are baptised we are welcomed, called, into the family of God and God’s Church. Baptism begins our journey of discipleship. Who are those who have encouraged and supported your journey into faith? How might we do that for others?

• Ministry – after being tempted, Jesus began his ministry. What does the word ‘ministry’ mean? What has been your ministry? What is your ministry now? What may be the way of your ministry in the future?

Thinking about temptation

• How are people tempted within the world of today? What affect does this have on others?

• Where is there temptation within the life of the Church? What affect does this have on others?

• What are the personal temptations that we face day by day? What affect does this have on others?

A personal prayer

Most holy and gracious God, you have drawn me through the waters of baptism into a new life with Christ, your Son. Empowered by your Spirit give me courage and strength when tempted to stray from your side; give me love and comfort when I struggle to confess my need of forgiveness, give me wisdom and understanding when I fail to truly follow your call. At the beginning of this Lenten season, I pray, that through these weeks I will hear your still, small voice speaking into my heart, that I will reflect upon my faith and ministry, that I will seek out new ways of serving in your name; through Jesus Christ, who in love died and rose again. Amen.

Dywed Iesu wrth ei ddisgyblion fod rhaid iddynt yn gyntaf godi eu croes os ydynt am ddilyn yn ôl ei droed. Mae o’n dechrau eu paratoi at ei farwolaeth sy’n dod, ac am eu hangen i golli eu bywyd er mwyn yr Efengyl.

St Marc 8:31-38

Bryd hynny: Dechreuodd Iesu ddysgu bod yn rhaid i Fab y Dyn ddioddef llawer, a chael ei wrthod gan yr henuriaid a’r prif offeiriaid a’r ysgrifenyddion, a’i ladd, ac ymhen tridiau atgyfodi. Yr oedd yn llefaru’r gair hwn yn gwbl agored. A chymerodd Pedr ef ato a dechrau ei geryddu. Troes yntau, ac wedi edrych ar ei ddisgyblion ceryddodd Pedr. ‘Dos ymaith o’m golwg, Satan,’ meddai, ‘oherwydd nid ar bethau Duw y mae dy fryd ond ar bethau dynol.’

Galwodd ato’r dyrfa ynghyd â’i ddisgyblion a dywedodd wrthynt, ‘Os myn neb ddod ar fy ôl i, rhaid iddo ymwadu ag ef ei hun a chodi ei groes a’m canlyn i. Oherwydd pwy bynnag a fyn gadw ei fywyd, fe’i cyll, ond pwy bynnag a gyll ei fywyd er fy mwyn i a’r Efengyl, fe’i ceidw. Pa elw a gaiff rhywun o ennill yr holl fyd a fforffedu ei fywyd? Oherwydd beth a all rhywun ei roi’n gyfnewid am ei fywyd? Pwy bynnag fydd â chywilydd ohonof fi ac o’m geiriau yn y genhedlaeth annuwiol a phechadurus hon, bydd ar Fab y Dyn hefyd gywilydd ohonynt hwy, pan ddaw yng ngogoniant ei Dad gyda’r angylion sanctaidd.’


Jesus tells his disciples that if they are to follow in his steps then they must first, take up their cross. He begins to prepare them for his coming death, and their need to lose their life for the sake of the Gospel.

St Mark 8:31-38

At that time: Jesus began to teach his disciples that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, ‘Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.’

He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, ‘If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.’

Syndod!

• Efallai nad y Grawys yw’r adeg pryd disgwyliwn i Dduw ein synnu, ac eto, dylem gael, achos dyma’r amser pryd y gelwir arnom i edrych ar y ffordd rydym yn byw ein ffydd o ddydd i ddydd. Lle gallai Duw eich synnu yn yr wythnos sydd i ddod? Pryd a lle mae Duw wedi’ch synnu ar eich siwrnai ffydd?

• Mae stori’r Efengyl a ddilynwn trwy’r Grawys, sy’n ein harwain at yr Wythnos Fawr a’r Pasg, yn un a all deimlo yn gyfarwydd iawn. Mae arnom angen gadael i’r geiriau yr ydym yn eu clywed suddo i’n meddwl a’n calon, ac o’r mannau hynny i’n gweddi. Pa mor effro ydym i glywed stori’r Grawys eto a cheisio deallwriaeth newydd am ffordd a bywyd Iesu mewn perthynas â’n bywydau? Sut gallwn edrych ar dymor y Grawys yn fodlon cael ein synnu, a’n herio gan bopeth a glywn, a chan Dduw?

Y Groes

• Mae Iesu yn dweud wrth ei ddisgyblion fod rhaid iddyn nhw godi eu croes os ydyn nhw am fod yn ddilynwyr iddo. Beth mae hyn yn ei olygu i’r Eglwys heddiw? Pa mor gyffyrddus yw’r ddelwedd hon o fewn ein diwyliant presennol, fod ninnau hefyd yn cael ein galw i gario ein croes?

• Symbol o’n ffydd yw’r groes, ac er hynny yn symbol o drais eithafol. Yn amser Iesu, yr oedd croes y croeshoeliad yn ffurf gyffredin ar farwolaeth i droseddwyr, sydd heddiw efallai yn gwneud inni deimlo yn anghyffyrddus i’w hystyried. Sut mae hyn yn effeithio arnom wrth inni nesáu at yr Wythnos Fawr a Dydd Gwener y Groglith?

• Ni ellir anwybyddu nag osgoi’r groes mewn perthynas â phoen, dioddefaint a marwolaeth. Sut y gall hi fod yn gymorth ar adegau personol o boen, dioddef a marwolaeth? Sut mae’n effeithio arnom mewn perthynas â’r newyddion am boen, dioddef a marwolaeth ddaw o bedwar ban byd?


Surprise!

• Lent may not be the time when we expect to be surprised by God, and yet we should be, as this is the time when we are called to look at the way in which we live out our faith day by day. Where may God surprise you in the coming week? When and where has God surprised you on your journey of faith?

• The Gospel story we follow through Lent, leading us towards Holy Week and Easter, is one that can feel very familiar. We need to allow the words we hear to sink into our minds and hearts, and from there into our prayer. How awake are we to hear the Lenten story again, and to seek a new understanding of the way and the life of Jesus in relation to our own lives? How might we approach the Lenten season so that we are willing to be surprised, and challenged by all we hear, and by God?

The Cross

• Jesus tells his disciples that they are to take up their cross if they want to be his followers. What does this mean for the Church today? How comfortable an image is it within our present culture, that we too are called to carry our cross?

• The cross is a symbol of our faith; yet a symbol too of extreme violence. At the time of Jesus, the cross of crucifixion was a common form of death for criminals, which today may make us feel uncomfortable to consider. How does this affect us as we journey towards Holy Week and Good Friday?

• The cross, in relation to pain, suffering and death, cannot be ignored or avoided. How may it help in personal times of pain, suffering and death? How does it affect us in relation to the news of pain, suffering and death from across the world?

• Look back over your coming to faith. Where, and what, have been the times of difficulty and struggle, and where and what has made the journey easier?

• The disciples had Jesus himself to guide them, who has helped you:

- by coming alongside in times of pain and suffering?

- by supporting in times of doubt? - by helping you to carry your cross,

and discover what that cross may be?

- by sharing your joy as God has surprised you?

- by helping you to discover how God is, or may be, calling you to serve in some particular way?

A personal prayer

Take up my cross? It’s too heavy to carry. Let go of the baggage I need not carry? I’ve tried more than once to do that. Is this journey too difficult? You never promised me an easy ride. Will I follow you wherever you call me too? Yes, of course I will. Be still and quiet? I keep on trying, and praying, seeking the way ahead. It’s the way of the cross? In that case, I need help to take it up and carry it? I’ll be surprised at what will happen next? Will I?

O God, full of love and compassion, your presence poured into my life surprises me out of my fears, doubt and my complacency. With you at my side, my cross becomes light;with your wisdom in my mind, my understanding of your ways deepens;with your love in my heart, my life is yours. I take up my cross, my faith in Jesus your Son. I will follow you with the whole of being and serve you as I can.

Should I be surprised at God’s love for me? I shouldn’t, but I am. I welcome it and I will return it. Amen.

Wrth fynd i mewn i’r deml yn Jerwsalem, mae Iesu yn ei chael yn llawn masnachwyr sydd yn atal y bobl rhag dod i addoli Duw. Mae o’n troi’r byrddau drosodd ac yn dweud wrth y bobl sydd wedi ymgynnull yno y bydd o’n codi’r deml eto dri diwrnod ar ôl iddi gael ei dinistrio. St Ioan 2:13-22

Entering into the temple in Jerusalem, Jesus finds it full of traders preventing the people from coming to worship God. He overturns the tables and tells those gathered there that three days after destroying the temple he will raise it up again. Only much later, after the resurrection, do the disciples understand the meaning behind Jesus’s words.

St John 2:13-22

At that time: The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money-changers seated at their tables. Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle. He also poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. He told those who were selling the doves, ‘Take these things out of here! Stop making my Father’s house a market-place!’ His disciples remembered that it was written, ‘Zeal for your house will consume me.’ The Jews then said to him, ‘What sign can you show us for doing this?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.’ The Jews then said, ‘This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?’ But he was speaking of the temple of his body. After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Mae Simeon yn adnabod Iesu fel Meseia Duw ac yn rhagweld dioddefiadau Mair.

St Luc 2:22-35

Bryd hynny: Pan ddaeth amser eu puredigaeth yn ôl Cyfraith Moses, cymerodd ei rieni ef i fyny i Jerwsalem i’w gyflwyno i’r Arglwydd, yn unol â’r hyn sydd wedi ei ysgrifennu yng Nghyfraith yr Arglwydd: ‘Pob gwryw cyntafanedig, fe’i gelwir yn sanctaidd i’r Arglwydd’; ac i roi offrwm yn unol â’r hyn sydd wedi ei ddweud yng Nghyfraith yr Arglwydd: ‘Pâr o durturod neu ddau gyw colomen.’

Yn awr yr oedd dyn yn Jerwsalem o’r enw Simeon; dyn cyfiawn a duwiol oedd hwn, yn disgwyl am ddiddanwch Israel; ac yr oedd yr Ysbryd Glân arno. Yr oedd ei dad a’i fam yn rhyfeddu at y pethau oedd yn cael eu dweud amdano. Yna bendithiodd Simeon hwy, a dywedodd wrth Fair ei fam, ‘Wele, gosodwyd hwn er cwymp a chyfodiad llawer yn Israel, ac i fod yn arwydd a wrthwynebir; a thithau, trywenir dy enaid di gan gleddyf; felly y datguddir meddyliau calonnau lawer.’


Simeon recognises Jesus as God’s Messiah and predicts Mary’s suffering.

St Luke 2:22-35

At that time: When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph brought Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of the Lord, ‘Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord’), and they offered a sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, ‘a pair of turtle-doves or two young pigeons.’

Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, ‘Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.’

And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed - and a sword will pierce your own soul too.’

• Dychmygwch mai chi yw Mair yn y deml – beth fyddai eich ymateb a’ch teimladau chi ar glywed y geiriau Simeon? Beth allai fod ar eich calon wrth i chi fyfyrio ar yr addewidion a’r rhybuddion am ddyfodol eich plentyn.

New beginnings

• Simeon has guarded the Jewish faith and traditions while waiting for the new beginning to be found in God’s Messiah. To what extent does this reflect your experiences of the Church today?

• For Simeon the new beginning would be characterised by ‘light for the Gentiles’ and he warned that this light would not be universally popular. What is the new beginning you long to see in the Church? Is it likely to be universally welcomed?

• As we travel nearer to Holy Week, what are you holding on to which might make it more difficult for you to fully welcome the new beginning offered by Easter?

• Can you identify moments in your life when it has felt like a new beginning? What made it feel that way? Did you recognise it or did someone else point it out to you? Was it your choice or did you feel it was imposed on you. Was it planned or did it happen? Was it easy or painful? What did you have to leave behind?

Mothering Sunday

• Imagine being Mary in the temple – what would your initial thoughts and feelings be on hearing the words of Simeon? What might be on your heart as you reflect on the promises and warnings about your child’s future?

• Think back on all that has happened to Mary and her family since the Angel Gabriel visited her in Nazareth, and since the Christ child was born. What might Mary’s feelings be as she reflects on this new life – this tiny child – this new beginning, for which she now has a mother’s responsibility?

In the crowd travelling up to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover are some Greeks who come with the request ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus’. This prompts Jesus to give his disciples a glimpse of the meaning of his forthcoming death and what it will achieve, using the illustration of a grain of wheat which must die before it can bear fruit.

St John 12:20-33

At that time: Among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, ‘Sir, we wish to see Jesus.’ Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, ‘The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honour.

‘Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—“Father, save me from this hour”? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name.’ Then a voice came from heaven, ‘I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.’ The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, ‘An angel has spoken to him.’ Jesus answered, ‘This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgement of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.’ He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

A personal prayer

Look at a flower (or a weed!) in the garden, its colours, its petals, its strength, its vulnerability. Which flower reflects the person you are? Quietly think about why you have chosen that flower, and what it ‘says’ to you about your own self and God’s love for you.

God of all Creation, out the depths of the earth beauty springs forth, a myriad of colours, hues and shades;from such a small seed grows so much potential to bring joy to the world.

Out of the depths of the womb you have called me forth, a myriad of colours painting the ‘who I am’;you have clothed me with a beauty unique to me, and see more wonders dwelling within me than my eyes can take in.

You see my strength and my vulnerability, for from you I can hide nothing.You see the seed of my faith growing, and my doubts and my convictions.You know me better than I know myself.Help me trust in you, your presence and love nurturing my life, to become the person you call me to be, and to follow you now and for always. Mae Iesu yn marchogaeth i mewn i Jerwsalem ar gefn asyn. Wrth iddo agosáu at y ddinas, mae’r tyfaoedd yn dod allan i’w gyfarfod, gan weiddi ‘Hosanna’, gan chwifio canghennau o’r palmwydd, a chan daenu eu mentyll ar hyd y ffordd o’i flaen ef.

St Marc 11:1-11

Bryd hynny: Pan ddaethant yn agos i Jerwsalem, at Bethffage a Bethania, ger Mynydd yr Olewydd, anfonodd Iesu ddau o’i ddisgyblion, ac meddai wrthynt, ‘Ewch i’r pentref sydd gyferbyn â chwi, ac yn syth wrth ichwi fynd i mewn iddo, cewch ebol wedi ei rwymo, un nad oes neb wedi bod ar ei gefn erioed. Gollyngwch ef a dewch ag ef yma. Ac yr oedd y rhai ar y blaen a’r rhai o’r tu ôl yn gweiddi: ‘Hosanna! Bendigedig yw’r un sy’n dod yn enw’r Arglwydd. Bendigedig yw’r deyrnas sy’n dod, teyrnas ein tad Dafydd. Hosanna yn y goruchaf!’

Aeth i mewn i Jerwsalem ac i’r deml, ac wedi edrych o’i gwmpas ar bopeth, gan ei bod eisoes yn hwyr, aeth allan i Fethania gyda’r Deuddeg.


Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey. As he approaches the city, the crowds come out to meet him, shouting ‘Hosanna’, waving branches cut from palm trees, and spreading their cloaks on the ground in front of him.

St Mark 11:1-11

At that time: When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples and said to them, ‘Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, “Why are you doing this?” just say this, “The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.” ’ They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it, some of the bystanders said to them, ‘What are you doing, untying the colt?’ They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it. Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields. Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting, ‘Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David! Hosanna in the highest heaven!’

Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

Farewells

• We all have times in our lives when we are faced with farewells. What makes goodbye’s easier to deal with and what makes them more difficult?

• Looking back over your life can you identify endings which have also been beginnings? What determines whether you view them as endings or beginnings? Is it always easy to tell the difference?

• How has your faith journey presented you with endings and farewells?

• Is there a sense in which they were also beginnings?

Palm Sunday

• Where will you put your palm cross through this Holy Week?

• What will you do with it after Easter?

• What does it mean to you to receive a palm cross?



The donkey’s owners asked, ‘Why are you doing this?’ How often do we agree to do something and in the middle of it ask ourselves ‘Why am I doing this?’ Often it is because the task has become difficult, demanding or disheartening. The task of discipleship can also lead to this question. However, it can be even more challenging when others ask us these questions, especially in mission and outreach. It is the question that cuts to the core of our faith and is best answered when we are able to state with confidence, ‘I am doing this because the Lord sent me!’

What is your story? Use pictures, images, words which remind you of times in your life when you have experienced farewells. When chapters or times in your life have come to a close and it has been time to move on. Perhaps try to capture the mood of those farewells.

• The Lord needs it was the answer given to those who questioned what the disciples were doing with the colt. What are the needs of the Lord during this Palm Sunday? Or what are the needs of his body, the Church, as it continues his journey in faith today? What personal resources, possessions or gifts do we, church and people, make available for his use?

• What is Christ calling you to do for him? What help will you need to be able to respond to him?

• Y mae ar y Meistr ei angen oedd yr ateb a roddwyd i’r rhai hynny a gwestiynodd beth roedd y disgyblion yn ei wneud efo’r ebol. Beth yw anghenion yr Arglwydd yn ystod y Sul y Blodau hwn? O God, I join my voice with those who shout in praiseas your Son enters Jerusalem. I celebrate this day and hold up my palm cross. I remember this day the week that now unfolds. I look at the cross and seek to understand.I want to taste the bread and wine transformed.I pray to stay awake and watch.I seek to feel the agony, the tears of Mary.I will enter the silence of Saturday.

O God, I need your presence with me this week, and, then,I can rejoice in the news of resurrection.Amen.

St John 17.1-10

At that time: Jesus looked up to heaven and said, ‘Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all people, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth by finishing the work that you gave me to do. So now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had in your presence before the world existed.

‘I have made your name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you; for the words that you gave to me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am asking on their behalf; I am not asking on behalf of the world, but on behalf of those whom you gave me, because they are yours.
