Author-poet Carl Sandburg was born here in athree-room cottage on January 6, 1878. Fromthese humble beginnings, Sandburg went onto achieve international acclaim for his poetry,children’s stories and a six-volume biographyof Abraham Lincoln. A Visitors’ Center and giftshop is located next to the birthplace. Be sureto walk through the wooded park and perennialgarden where the ashes of Carl Sandburg andhis wife lie beneath “Remembrance Rock.”Quotation Walk leads you through the gardenwith famous quotes from Carl Sandburg’swritings engraved in the stepping stones.

This imposing Richardsonian Romanesquechurch building, constructed in 1898 of dark redsandstone transported from Michigan, is listedon the National Register of Historic Places. Ithas a number of magnificent rose windows, andis located on the site of the “Old First Church” –founded by the original settlers who came herewith George Washington Gale to start a religiouscommunity and college.

See acomplete station agents area, a central trafficcontrol console, sit in the engineers seat andbe at the controls of a GP30 locomotive. Takea tour of our 1930 Baldwin built 4-6-4Hudson 3006 locomotive, a fully restoredRailway Post Office and Railway Express caras well as a Pullman parlor car and of course acomplete 1930 caboose. The cornerstone of this sandstone building was laid in 1884 and constructionwas completed in 1886 at a cost of $150,000. The ornate details are typical ofthe Romanesque period. On the east lawn, you’ll find the Mother BickerdykeMemorial. This sculpture is dedicated to a Galesburg woman who served thewounded Union soldiers during the Civil War. To the west of the Courthouse isStandish Park Arboretum with over 170 trees and shrubs.

Old Main’s construction in 1857 reflectedthe prosperity that the new railroadbegan bringing to Galesburg threeyears earlier. It is the sole remainingoriginal site of the great Lincoln-Douglas debates in 1858. The debatewas staged against the east wall of OldMain, and two large bronze plaques withthe likenesses of Abraham Lincoln andStephen Douglas grace that wall.Registered as a National Landmark, thebuilding itself is a significant example ofAmerican Gothic Revival architecture.

The Orpheum Theatre opened in 1916. Thefacade is French Second Empire style andthe interior features classic Corinthiancolumns. HISTORY•Galesburg was founded by GeorgeWashington Gale, a minister of thegospel from New York state, whodreamed of establishing a manuallabor college which became KnoxCollege. A committee from NewYork purchased 17 acres in KnoxCounty in 1835, and the first 25 set-tlers arrived in 1836. They built tem-porary cabins in Log City near cur-rent Lake Storey, just north ofGalesburg, having decided that nolog cabins were to be built insidethe town limits.

•Galesburg was thehome of Mary AnnBickerdyke, whoprovided hospitalcare for Union sol-diers during theAmerican Civil War.

•Corpus Christi is a parish inGalesburg, which was founded byFather Joseph Costa and dates toAugust 4, 1885. What makes thechurch unique is the special relic itholds. It holds the body of St.Crescent: legend says that thereare only 10 saints whose bodies arelaid in churches in the UnitedStates.

HISTORY TRIVIA1834 – Oldest residence in KnoxCounty was built by William Riley.

1897 – Central CongregationalChurch, built in 1897 is an exampleof Romanesque Style architecturewith unusual rose stained glassthroughout. It is on the NationalRegister of Historic Places.

1898 – George and EllaLawrence of Galesburg were thedesigners of the Illinois State Flag.

1905 – The world's largest elm tree,known as the "Lombard" elm wasacclaimed at a spread of 140 feet indiameter stood right here in Galesburg.

knowENTERTAINMENT•Those Were the Days! starring WilliamHolden was filmed on the Knox Collegecampus in 1940.

•After the Civil War, Galesburg was thebirthplace of poet, author, and historian CarlSandburg. The site contains the cottageSandburg was born in, a modern museum,the rock under which he and his wife Lilianare buried, and a performance venue.

According to legend, it was inGalesburg in 1914 where the four MarxBrothers (Groucho, Chico, Harpo andGummo) first received their nicknames. Afellow Vaudevillian, Art Fisher, supposedlybestowed them upon the brothers duringa poker game here. Zeppo Marx receivedhis nickname later.

•George Reeves, who played Superman ina popular television series (although anative Iowan), lived here briefly as an infantwith his mother, a Galesburg resident mostof her life. Her homestead still stands atBroad Street.

•Held annually every September since1972, Galesburg hosts the largest gatheringof Stearman planes anywhere in the worldsince the end of WWII.

•In 1916, the Orpheum Theatre on KelloggStreet opened its doors after a constructioncost of $135,000. Built as a vaudevillehouse, the Orpheum hosted many earlystars of stage and screen, including JackBenny, George Burns, Harry Houdini, AlJolson, Edgar Bergen, Fanny Brice andBlackstone, the Magician. In the 1930'sthe Orpheum was owned by RKOCorporations, who distributed the first ofmore than 20 films for Walt Disney, including"Snow White" and "Fantasia".

GALESBURG was home tothe first anti-slavery societyin the state of Illinois foundedin 1837, and was a stop onthe underground railroad.

1842– Olmstead Ferris planted 60 acres of corn pro-ducing 20 barrels of seed which he took to Londonand popped corn for Queen Victoria in WindsorCastle which was a first in a European country.

1843 – The World's Greatest Horse Market wasfounded in Galesburg, furnishing horses for theUnited States Government during the Civil War andfor many years to follow. They served the worldmarket through the 1930's.

1851 – George Brown of Galesburg invented theCorn Planter and they were sold all over the world.

1857 – A new invention combined “punch & shearcorn press” invented by G.D. Colton & Company ofGalesburg for the manufacturing and compressionof broom straw for brooms and the basic idea is stillused today.

1871 – May Company of Galesburg adapted thewindmill originally used in Holland to our farm stan-dards. Over 2,000 May windmills were manufac-tured and sold for use in Western states.

1884 – Many bricks from Purington Paving BrickCompany in East Galesburg were used in buildingthe Panama Canal and also used in Europe.

1893 – George Washington Gale Ferris was bornand raised in Galesburg and was the inventor of the"Ferris Wheel".

1904 – The “Gale” touring car was built inGalesburg, a vintage auto, comparable to Ford'sModel “T”. Had the Sears Company picked the"Gale" touring car instead of the Model "F" to beshowcased in their catalog the future of the "Gale"car would have been entirely different.

1910– The “Illinois”, a 35 horse powered touring carwas known as a long low-hung roomy car, designedand built in Galesburg by the Overholt Company.

PRESIDENT•Ronald Reagan moved toGalesburg with his family atthe age of five. They lived in anapartment at 1260 N. KelloggStreet and later movedacross the street to 1219 N.Kellogg. He attended SilasWillard Elementary School.

•Nancy (Davis) Reagan's father, Dr. Loyal Davis, awell-known Chicago neurosurgeon, was born inGalesburg. Dr. Davis married Nancy's mother in1929 adopting Nancy who spent many vacationsfrom school at her grandparents' Walnut Avenueresidence in Galesburg.

•The Carr Mansion on North Prairie Street wasthe site of the first presidential cabinet meet-ing held outside of Washington, DC. Thosepresent for this meeting in 1899 werePresident McKinley and Secretary John Hays.

LINCOLN-DOUGLAS DEBATEThe city was the site of the fifth Lincoln-Douglas debate, on a temporary speaker's plat-form attached to the east end of Knox College'sOld Main building on October 7, 1858.

MANUFACTURING& COMMERCEThroughout much of itshistory, Galesburg hasbeen inextricably tied tothe railroad industry.Local businessmenwere major backers ofthe first railroad to con-nect Illinois' (then) twobiggest cities – Chicagoand Quincy. Also, homeof a major rail sortingyard. As of the closing ofthe Maytag plant in thefall of 2004, BNSFRailway is once againthe largest privateemployer in Galesburg.

The GalesburgHistorical Society has a mission to “preserve and promoteGalesburg history.” Currently, the organi-zation has displays at the GalesburgAntiques Mall Co. located on the thirdfloor, at the top of the stairs, of 349 EastMain Street. The museum takes you backin time with snapshots of Galesburgthrough pictures, narratives, memorabiliaand artifacts pertaining to Galesburg’spast. The journey is free and open sevendays a week to visitors—10am to 5pmMonday through Saturday and 12pm to5pm on Sundays. The displays rotate andthe artifacts are from various venues,some on loan, and some owned by thesociety. Be sure to sign the visitors’ bookwhen you are there!


The names of the towns in west-centralIllinois are as familiar as the roads that con-nect them, but the stories behind thosenames reveal the area's unique history.Some settlements named after their

founders, such as Galesburg, or theirfounder's hometowns, such as Abingdon.Others, such as Maquon and Dahinda,

illustrate the Native American influence inthe area, or trace their names toEuropean heritage, such as Galva andBishop Hill.Still others, such as Roseville and

Williamsfield, picked up their names whenthe railroad came to town.Edward Callary, an associate professor

of English at Northern Illinois University,has collected all of these stories in "PlaceNames of Illinois," soon to be released byUniversity of Illinois Press.The entries provide information on pro-

nunciation and etymology when appro-priate, as well as the community's loca-tions and insight into the historical andcultural context of place names all overthe state.Here are summaries of the names of

the places right under our noses, culledfrom Callary's book:

ABINGDON: Founded in 1836 byAbraham D. Swartz and named for hisformer home of Abingdon in HartfordCounty, Md., which was named forAbingdon, Oxfordshire, England. Thepost office was established in 1837 asOregon, changed to Hartford in 1839and then changed to Abingdon in 1852.

ALTONA: Founded in 1834 as La Pier,but the post office was established in1844 as Walnut Grove and changed toReno in 1868. The station on theCentral Military Tract Railroad wasAltona, though, and just 11 days afterbeing established as Reno, it waschanged to Altona.

DAHINDA: Laid out in 1888 on thesite of a former Native American village,Dahinda takes its name from HenryWadsworth Longfellow's "The Song ofHiawatha," in which Dahinda is theOjibwa name of the bullfrog.

GILSON: Named after one of itsfounders – James Gilson. The postoffice was established in 1857.

KNOXVILLE: Known as Hendersonuntil 1832, when it was renamed for itslocation in Knox County. It was thecounty seat until 1873. The post officewas established in 1830 as KnoxCourthouse; the name was changed toKnoxville in 1844.

MAQUON: The village was laid out in1837 and originally was calledBennington, perhaps after Bennington,Vt. The name was changed to Maquonin 1858, probably from a generalAlgonquin word recorded as A-ma-quon-sippi, which was translated intoEnglish as Spoon River.

ONEIDA: Founded in 1854 by CharlesCamp, Oneida likely takes its namefrom Oneida County, N.Y. The tribalmeaning of the name is “people of thestanding stone.” The post office wasestablished as Oneida in 1855.

RIO: The post office was establishedin 1848 as North Prairie and settlersalso toyed with calling the townCoeburg after postmaster Nelson Coebefore deciding on Rio, a reference tothe Rio Grande, and changing the postoffice to that name in 1871.

VICTORIA: Probably named afterQueen Victoria of Great Britain, whosecoronation was in 1837, the same yearthe post office was established inVictoria.

WATAGA: This village was known asUrn when the post office first wasestablished in 1853, but was changed toWataga in 1855, likely a transfer fromWatauga in North Carolina, Tennesseeor Kentucky. Watauga comes from theCherokee.

WILLIAMSFIELD: The post officewas established in 1888 and the town isbelieved to have been named after acontractor for the Santa Fe Railroad.

YATES CITY: Likely named after thehome of its founders in Yates County,N.Y.

GALESBURGFOUNDED IN 1836 and namedafter the Rev. GeorgeWashington Gale, a Presbyterianminister from Whitesboro, N.Y.,who helped found the city andKnox College. The post office wasestablished in 1837 as Galesburghand was changed to Galesburg in 1893.
