It was an emotional conversation with Gaby, Christine and Ilse. Thomas and I were just listening, or at least we were trying, because it was an unsettling moment. We did not fully realise the impact of that phone call on 3rd of May, and I still do not realise it today, 24th of July 2018, as I am writing this: the greatest legend of pigeon racing in Belgium, whose pigeons have left their mark across the globe, will no longer be keeping pigeons. It feels as if Messi would suddenly decide to end his career, or Pele, the greatest of all times.

Gaby is a man of his word: when he makes a decision, he is not likely to change his mind. His decision to end his career is final. Not a single fertile pigeon will be kept in Dentergem. Only those few pigeons that are no longer fertile and that are very dear to him, will get to spend their days in Dentergem.

Gaby is a man of few words but with a clear vision. We really appreciate the fact that he made the first step: he asked us to offer his entire life’s work to the world, confident that this is the best way to end his career.

I received a phone call from Gaby in the beginning of May, and I was asked to come over as quickly as possible. At the time, I had no idea what this would be about. Thomas and I went to Dentergem the next day, where we were told that Gaby’s doctor had urged him to stop keeping pigeons. Christine was there as well, and she confirmed that Gaby had to make a really tough decision, in order to avoid any more strain on his lungs.

During that first conversation we quickly understood that he had not taken this decision lightly – it was moti-vated by both reason and emotion. Even though Gaby will always be very passionate about pigeon racing, his doctor has made it clear to him that if he were to continue racing, keeping or breeding pigeons, this would have negative consequences for his health.

We talked about the emotions that he felt when making this decision, about the pigeons that he feels very attached to, and we also discussed the practical side of things. He wants everything to be perfect-ly organised, down to the finest details. This really typifies Gaby as a person.

PIPA once started off as a pigeon newspaper. After a few years, we also started selling pigeons, and I quickly understood that special birds were my main passion; exclusive pigeons that are well above average, pigeons the world looks up to.

When my brother joined the project, selecting the best pigeons for our online auctions continued to be our main priority. We have been organising numerous auctions over the years, we have sold some fantastic birds, and new records were set along the way, although

this was never really a goal as such. Trying to discover exclusive pigeons will always be our true passion.

This event will no doubt be our most special auction ever, and the most special auction in the history of our sport. This is the life’s work of a man who has dramatically changed the outlook of our sport, like no one else has ever done before him.

Gaby, we are proud that we can reali-se this project for you. We genuinely

hope that it will be a major success, because this will be a special moment, and not only for us. To you, this will mark the end of your life’s work. We wish you a good, happy and long life after yourpigeon racing career, and a joyful retirement. We wish you all the best!

Can you name a pigeon strain that has been more successful in international races ranging from 400 to 800km than the Gaby Vandenabeele family? Take it from us, there is no such breed. No other pigeon family has even come close to the pigeon family of the grandmaster from Dentergem.

No other loft across the globe has bred more champions than the noble Vandenabeele strain. And their exceptional race-winning abilities have been repeatedly passed on to future genera-tions. That is why this breed is in a league of its own. It also explains why the Vandenabeele pigeons are in such demand.

1976: The start of a success storyGaby’s career in pigeon racing has been nothing short of impressive; so impressive in fact that it is hard to put into words. His achievements as a fancier have been praised by the international press, and we reckon pretty much everyone is now familiar with his palmares.

When Gaby and his wife Christine moved to their current home in the Wontergemstraat in Dentergem in 1979, no one would have guessed that this would be the starting point for the most fantastic success story in pigeon racing. The first pigeons to stay in Gaby’s loft unsurprisingly came from his father Gentiel, himself a middle distance champion in West Flanders back in the day. Gen-tiel’s pigeon breed was mainly centered around pigeons of Valère Desmet-Matthijs (Nokere), Pol Bostijn (Moorslede) and Lucien Verstraete (Dein-ze), and they would prove an excellent starting point for Gaby as well. The first three bloodlines to play a prominent role in Gaby’s loft are stock breeders Kleinen, Bijter and Groten.

There was one pigeon that played a particularly impor-tant role in this success journey: Kleinen BE81-3238253. His breeding achievements still show in pigeon races today, now more than 37 years later. In fact, all of Gaby’s international champions are related to him, including Wittenbuik, Bliksem, Rudy and the new generation. They turned Gaby Vandenabeele into a grandmaster, and into one of our sport’s great heroes!

Gaby got involved in pigeon racing at a very young age, in the lofts of his father Gentiel, a proficient fancier with a top quality breed. As such, Gaby had everything he needed to have a flying start in 1976, getting a lot of invaluable advice from his father, and of course some excellent pigeons as well. Gaby would soon dominate the middle distance in his region. He was in fact so strong that many of his opponents decided to move over to a different competition, simply to avoid the overwhelming strength of the Gaby Vandenabeele pigeons. Denter-gem was soon banned from several competitions in and around the area, which was a sad thing. As there is nothing you can do as a fancier, Gabyhad no choice but to leave the middle distance compe-tition in 1985. He took a different course, now aiming for the provincial and national races of the longer middle

distance and the one day long distance (400-800km). Gaby had already started making a few investments but it soon turned out that his own pigeons were perfor-ming a lot better than the newly obtained long distance pigeons. He promptly decided to compete in the long distance with his own pigeon breed and the bloodline of stock breeder Kleinen in particular. His team performed even better than before, adding more prestigious results to their already long list of achievements.

There is a saying that goes: “every disadvantage has its advantage”. Gaby did not realise it at the time but it was thanks to his own opponents that the Vandenabee-le pigeons were able to develop into an internationally

regarded pigeon breed, thanks to their excellent results in the longer distance races (500 to 800km), which earned them a place in the hall of fame. It was still the year 1985 when the racing team deliver-ed their first prestigious performance in a national race from Limoges in early July, with Gaby claiming a 2nd and 10th na-tional. It was racing bird Fideel, a son of Kleinen, that had only just failed to win a coveted national victory for the first time – a national victory was due soon.

Gaby eventually claimed a national victory for the first time in 1988 with Rambo, winner of a 1st National Bourges of 13,154 old birds, and fastest of 63,176 birds. It was the first of seven national first prizes, and it was the start of a highly successful team that would never cease to deliver.

Wittenbuik turns Gaby Vandenabeele into a superstarWe return to 1988, the year in which the legendary Wittenbuik saw the light of day. This was the starting point of the dynasty of the illustrious Kleinen, his son Wittenbuik and his grandson Bliksem. Each one of them has made pigeon racing history.

With the help of Wittenbuik, Gaby now started to dominate the long distance competition as well, and his 3 (inter) provincial first prizes were a hot topic in pigeon magazines. Wittenbuik was making the headlines as one of the best, if not the best pigeon of his generation. This champion turned Gaby Vandenabeele into an international superstar. Wittenbuik was one of the leading names in seasons 1988 through to 1990, along with his uncle Favoriet 155/86 (a son of Bijter, and a half brother of Flicka, the dam of Wittenbuik). Favoriet became 1st Provincial Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB West Flanders 1989, and he won a 2nd Prov Poitiers, a 2nd Prov Angoulême, a 2nd Prov Tours, etc. He is quite a champion indeed.

Breeding youngsters from great champions has always been the key to success – it has led to a very strong pigeon family and to

consistent results. Unsurprisingly, Wittenbuik was given a well deserved spot in the breeding loft after his brilliant racing career, where he would soon develop into the team’s new stock breeder.

Some expected to see a drop in perfor-mance in the racing loft but that was not quite the case: a new team of champions were eager to take over from Wittenbuik. One of the team’s new stars was Turbo BE90-3119128, another direct son of stock breeder Kleinen, now paired to Georgette. This top class bird claimed the title of 1st Provincial Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB West Flanders in 1993, after winning a 2nd Nat Brive 5,132 p., a 4th Prov 2,197 p. and 50th Nat Limoges 10,291 p., and a 32nd Prov Limoges 2,767 p.

He did almost the same in 1994, now claiming a 2nd Pro-vincial Ace Pigeon title Long Distance KBDB West Flanders with a 22nd Prov Poitiers 2,971 p., a 5th Prov Limoges 2,487 p. (on 27/06), a 5th Prov 1,630 p. and a 31st Nat Limoges 8,362 p. (on 09/07). Turbo would eventually turn out to be a highly talented breeder as well: one pigeon that comes to mind is the hen of top pair Perigueux (grandson Wittenbuik) x Corry (daughter Turbo) of Rudi De saer. They are the grandparents of a number of national first prize winners and top class long distance birds.

It was at this point in time that another highly renowned bird came to the fore, Ronker BE91-3204052. This great champion has had his share of success as well, as 1st Provincial Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB West Flanders 1994 and winner of a 1st Nat Limoges 8,883 p. in 1995. And that brings us to 1995, the season in which Blauwe Fideel BE93-3050068 (a grandson of Fideel 147/83) really started to deliver, winning a 1st National Brive 4,719 olds and a 1st National Brive 3,970 two year olds (661km). And the team continued to perform at a top level, with Wittenbuik increasingly leaving his mark on both the racing and the breeding loft. One of the sons that ope-ned the door to a new chapter in this success journey is Kolonel BE92-3233008: he wins a 1st Prov Chateauroux 7,793 p., a 2nd Prov Orleans 1,413 YLs, a 12th Prov Blois 3,026 p., a 54th Prov Tours 3,152 p., and a 37th Nat Zone Limoges 6,018 p.

Kolonel gained a name for himself in 1998, when he bred an iconic new pigeon for the Gaby Vandenabeele pigeon

breed: the now legendary Bliksem BE98-3158062, the moral winner of a national ace pigeon title middle distance 2000.

He lost the title simply because Gaby had basketed him for Perigueux, which took place in the same weekend as

Bourges. Perigueux did not count for the ace pigeon championship, as opposed to Bourges. But not to worry: Bliksem would soon develop into a world class breeding bird, and he took his revenge by turning into one of the world’s most acclaimed pigeons in terms of breeding value.

There are a few more renowned racing and breeding birds from this generation that deserve a mention, because they too have played a

crucial role in the international success story of the Gaby Vandenabeele breed.

- Neptunus BE99-3199708 (a grandson of Kleinen, and the sire of The Lion King: 1st Prov Tours, as well as the grandfather of Fyther: 1st Nat Agen, and Prinses Gloria: 1st Nat Gueret)- Royal Blue BE05-3006583 (another grandson of Wittenbuik, and the sire of Gloria: 2nd Nat Ace PigeonLong Distance KBDB, and the grandfather of Prinses Gloria: 1st Nat Gueret) - Zus Wittenbuik BE92-3349996: the dam of James Bond BE01-3031007: winner of a 1st Nat Bourges 13,166 yearlings.

Bliksem laid the foundation for the next highly successful chapter, for the team of Gaby Vandenabeele as well as for other lofts across the globe (see list of references). It began at the turn of the new millennium, and continued with his now world famous son and the team’s current number one, five star breeder Rudy BE06-3008003, and his equally famous sons Super Romeo and New Bliksem. This was the final chapter in an incredible career that is still fresh in everyone’s memories, and which began with the legendary stock breeder Kleinen.

Kleinen was the leader of the team, the stock breeder of a pigeon breed with international appeal. His blood-line has proven to have incredible breeding abilities. His bloodline was the instigator for 7 national victories as well as 100 provincial first prizes between 1988 and 2018. Here is a look at all seven national first prizes:

Luck, coincidence or intuition? Does Gaby have something others do not have? Does he know more about pigeons than his opponents? The way

in which he was able to have his pigeon breed compete at such a level is nothing short of remarkable. He has always sought and found a new leader of the team, a new stock breeder that he could further build upon. Is this a matter of coincidence or luck, or does it come down to having a good feel for pigeons? Gaby is still convinced that New Bliksem will one day exceed the breeding achievements of his sire Rudy and his grand-father Bliksem. Only time will tell of course, although it will not be happening here in Dentergem. One thing is clear: Gaby rarely makes mistakes.

Another peculiarity is the fact that the team’s key names are all directly related to Kleinen. The dynasty of stock sire Kleinen, his son Wittenbuik and his grandson Bliksem have continued to live on in Rudy, Super Romeo and New Bliksem. In other words, the breeding dominance continues to exist in a straight line.

A top class breed shows in the results True top class birds are the alpha and omega of pigeon racing, and they have been a crucial factor from start to finish.

Without them, you cannot perform at the highest level for almost 40 years straight. And a top class breed comes from proper selection! Gaby did not even have any breeders in his first five years as a pigeon fancier; Kleinen was the first genuine breeder in team Gaby Vandenabeele. And he was one of a kind!

Gaby’s pigeons do not get any special treatments; they have to prove themselves first, and they are vigorously

put to the test. This is something Gaby learned from his father Gentiel, a very successful fancier in his time, who asked a lot from his pigeons.

He expected his pigeons to deliver in tough weather, with speeds of around 1200 m/min or less. Pigeons that failed to cope were dropped from the team almost straightaway. And that was his main asset: strict selection was the key to success, and Gaby is still using that same approach.

He picks his pigeons in good racing conditions with speeds of 1200 to 1300 m/min or less, with no wind or preferably a headwind. Pigeon racing is all about winning, and in order to win races you need pigeons that can take the lead.

This type of bird can only be discovered in races with a lot of headwind, where they have to break away from the group to take the win. When Gaby sees these qualities in a pigeon, it will be given a chance in the breeding loft already at a very young age. That is what happened to Wittenbuik (3 x 1st Interprovincial), Bliksem, Rudy, and eventually Super Romeo and New Bliksem.

Gaby was always looking for new investments, and the same principles applied to any potential newcomer as well: he wanted pigeons capable of excelling in demanding condi-tions. He also wanted his investments to originate from pigeons with proven breeding qualities, and he did prefer pigeons that were to some extent related to his own breed. Their descendants were then put to the test in various races, before he would allow these newcomers to be mixed into his existing family.

Gaby prefers pigeons with soft plumage and a strong wing, with long, narrow and slightly rounded, supple primaries. Even though he has pigeons of different sizes in his loft, he favours birds that are average in size, as – when pigeons are more or less the same size – then there is no need to compensate for size differences when creating new pairings.

Kleinen was the first genuine breeder in the lofts of Vandenabeele, and he is one of a kind! He was in fact never basketed for races, which goes against the grandmaster’s own principles. But with good reason: Kleinen was born in peculiar circumstances. Call it coinci-dence or just plain luck.

The sire of Kleinen is Zitterke BE80-4055428, a pigeon that Gaby had borrowed from fellow fancier Jozef Delodder for a brief while. Gaby had been quite impressed with Zitterke’s achievements, including a clear win from

Orleans in hot weather and a strong head-wind. But there was a problem: Gaby could not think of a suited partner for his newly obtained star. A good friend of his decided to offer some help: fellow fancier Gilbert Van Parys was willing to lend him his super class hen Ameyke BE77-33064419. Ameyke belongs to the outstanding stock pair Angoulême x Ameyke, the parents and grandparents of several ace pigeons and national first prize winners. The pair moved to the loft of team Norman in Knokke Heist after Gilbert Van Parys’s total auction.

It has been 37 years since Kleinen saw the light of day in Dentergem, and his direct descendants are still playing a lead role in competitions across the globe! This Kleinen dynasty has continued to deliver new race winners and ace pigeons season after season, earning Gaby Vandenabeele the status of an international champion. This is a bloodline with world class breeding potential!

And so it happened: breeding hen Ameyke was paired to Zitterke. At the time, no one could have predicted this pair to become one of the main pillars of the world’s most successful pigeon family. Zitterke x Ameyke was not just a lucky shot but rather a combination of two super class breeders. And the combination was an instant success, with the now world famous Kleinen as their most important des-cendant! Make no mistake: his name (Kleinen is small one in Dutch) does not really say anything about his posture, since Kleinen was rather average in size.

It was Kleinen who pushed this team to the top, allowing Gaby to become one of Belgium’s leading pigeon fanciers, which he would be until the end of his career!

Kleinen was initially paired to Goed jong 76 of Gaby’s father Gentiel, and this pair delivered almost right away: he bred Pica-nol in his first year of breeding,

followed by Fideel. And it did not stop there: an impressive series of champions and iconic breeders were bred, with Wittenbuik becoming the most famous son of stock bree-der Kleinen. His most important sons include:

To be honest, a fancier should feel very lucky to have one such breeder in his collection over the course of his entire racing career. But Gaby did not have to wait long for a worthy successor: Kleinen’s spot in the breeding loft was taken up by one of his own sons: the legendary Wittenbuik.

He is the most famous pigeon and the greatest champion in Gaby Vandena-beele’s fabulous career. Kleinen was pretty much the perfect pigeon, with truly exceptional breeding potential. He died in the spring of 1995 aged 14, and it meant a major loss for Gaby’s breeding loft. After all, such high value breeders come by only every once in a while.

Wittenbuik was paired to different partners, and he bred some outstanding racing birds and super class breeders with each of them. The Wittenbuik descendants have been doing really well over the years, both at home in Denter-gem and in lofts across the globe. It is hard to tell which of Wittenbuik’s partners have given the best results but he bred some particularly talented youngsters with Moriska, Françoise, Het Provinciaalke (a daughter of Turbo) and Prinsesje.

Two direct children of Wittenbuik that have contributed considerably to the international reputation of this world class breeder are without doubt Kolonel and Dolores.

- Kolonel BE92-3233008: a son of Wittenbuik x Prinsesje (a daughter of Picanol), which makes him an inbred to

stock breeder Kleinen. He followed in the footsteps of his sire Wittenbuik as a racing bird, winning for instance a 1st Prov. Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB 1995, 1st

Prov. Limoges 2,762 p., 1st Prov. Chateauroux 7,793 p.,

and 2nd Prov. Orleans 1,413 p. Kolonel owes his reputati-on mainly to Rita (a daughter of Vital: 1st Nat Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB 1993 for Noël Lippens), to which he was paired in the breeding loft in 1998. They became the parents of an iconic new bree-der for team Vandenabeele: none other than the legendary Bliksem (see later).

- Dolores BE95-3332945: a full sister of Kolonel. She was paired to Bliksem when she gave birth to Jonge Bliksem BE01-3266512, the stock breeder of Jan Hooymans and the sire of the now world famous Harry, 1st Nat Ace Pigeon One Day Long Distance WHZB 2009.

Bliksem is a son of Kolonel (son of Wittenbuik) x Rita BE93-3354340, a direct daughter of Vital BE88-3389798, 1st Nat Ace Pigeon Long Dis-tance KBDB 1993 of long distance champion Noël Lippens.

The year 2000 was by far Bliksem’s best racing season. He could have won the title of National Ace Pigeon Middle Distance KBDB but there was one problem: he was basketed for Perigueux instead of Bourges on 30th of July 2000, where he claimed a 5th Provincial of 1,119 pigeons. However, Bourges was the

only race that day to count for the national ace pigeon championship middle distance KBDB, which was rather unfortunate.


A fantastic racing bird… and a breeding superstar!

We have had Kleinen and his son Wittenbuik, and now was the time for Bliksem to take over the Vandenabeele breeding loft, as a grandson of Wittenbuik. Bliksem was himself an excellent racing bird; he did earn his stripes in the racing loft before getting a prominent place in the breeding loft.

Bliksem is still this champi-onship’s moral winner, with the lowest coefficient. But he never won the national title.

He took his revenge not as racing bird but as a breeder! The achievements of his youngsters and grandchildren continue to resonate not only in Belgium but worldwide. The Bliksem bloodline is still playing a prominent role in

numerous national and international competitions, even in 2018. And they have been particularly strong in the lofts of grandmaster Gaby Vandenabeele himself.

One of the pigeons to play an important role in this success journey is his son Rudy BE06-3008003, the well proven star in the breeding lofts in Dentergem. Rudy’s qualities showed through the achievements of his two fantastic sons:

- Super Romeo BE12-3088052: 1st National Ace Pigeon Long Distance Yearlings KBDB 2013

- New Bliksem BE13-3056024: 1st National Tulle 5,731 Yearlings 2014.

And to conclude: one of the most renowned champi-ons in The Netherlands is Harry of Jan Hooymans: 1st Nat Ace Pigeon One Day Long Distance WHZB 2009. He too is a grandson of the legendary breeder Bliksem.

Rudy only had a brief racing career. He showed his exceptional talent for the first time as a yearling, which would also be his final season of racing. His sire Bliksem was no longer fertile, and so Gaby almost immediately decided to transfer Rudy from the racing loft onto the breeding loft. It was another great move by the grandmaster, and it shows that he does have an eye for talent: Rudy did eventually become the new leading name in the Gaby Vandenabeele pigeon family.

These two champions were soon given a new destination: the breeding loft. Super Romeo (fertile until April 2017) and New Bliksem became the main pillars of this loft in recent years, along with their sire Rudy. Just like every fancier, Gaby is always looking for potential reinforcements, in search of the next great champion. And preferably one that originates from his own breed, with another renowned bloodline mixed in. Both Super Romeo and New Bliksem are a perfect exam-ple of this successful breeding strategy of the grandmaster from Dentergem!

The end of a story Pilgrims from all across the world travelled to Dentergem, but not to take a sip from its holy water. No, they came to discover the secret behind the countless successes of this team, and to find out why the Gaby Vandenabeele pigeons

were able to dominate the competition for so many years. These fanciers were fascinated by the youngsters and even the grandchildren of such iconic breeders as Kleinen, Wittenbuik and Bliksem, and today they are equally captivated by the youngsters of the team’s cur-rent stars, which include most notably Rudy and his sons Super Romeo and New Bliksem.

A total auction, which takes place on 10, 11 and 12 November, will mark the last chapter of an incredible success story. The pigeon lofts in Dentergem will now close for good, although the name Vandenabeele will continue to live on in future seasons, as fellow fanciers from around the globe will in turn try to achieve great results with the help of the breed of the grandmaster from Dentergem, Gaby Vandenabeele.

The auction will be published on PIPA in advance, on Sunday 28th of October at 5pm, to give interested fanciers the chance to browse through and to study the entire auction beforehand. Bidding will not yet be possible. Bidding starts on Monday 29th of October at 5pm, which is the official start of the auction.

How to follow the auction and to place bids?You can of course follow the auction online on PIPA (www.pipa.be). Visit the PIPA website on your PC, your mobile phone or your tablet and click ‘auctions’. Keep in mind you have to be logged in on the website in order to bid direct-ly. Auction closing timeThe auction closes across three days:

- Day 1: Saturday 10th of November 2018: end of Part 1 at 11am Every 30 minutes another part of the auction ends: Part 2 at 11:30am, Part 3 at 12am, and so on.

If someone bids on a pigeon in the final five minutes before closing time, the closing time will be extended for another five minutes, just until there are no more bids in the last five minutes. This means the auction is officially over. The closing time will be clearly indicated for each pigeon. The same scenario applies for day 2 and 3 of the auction:

- Day 2: Sunday 11th of November 2018: end of Part 1 at 11am The following parts will close every 30 minutes

- Day 3: Monday 12th of November 2018: end of Part 1 at 11am The following parts will close every 30 minutes until the final bids have been placed, and the auction closes for good.

Which pigeons will be sold in which part?The auction will include extensive breeding schemes, with an overview of Gaby Vandenabeele’s pairings. To make things easier for you, the parents and their youngsters that are sold in auction will come with a sale number. This sale number can be found online during the auction in both the breeding schemes and in the extensive presentations.

Are you interested in buying one particular bird? Write down its sale number.

For instance: sale number 3.2.10: this means the pigeon is sold on the third day (12th of November), in Part 2, sale 10.

Pigeons in auctionAll the pigeons to be sold in auction were still fertile in 2018. The pigeons from 2011 or older will be given away along with a young bird, usually with their direct son or daughter. However, keep in mind Gaby Vandenabeele or PIPA cannot guarantee for 100% that these pigeons will still be fertile in the future, which is why they are given away for free with one of their descendants (youngsters). Since this is a total auction, with no substitute pigeons available, the risk of a pigeon no longer being fertile is entirely the buyer’s responsibility.

Important: if there is clear doubt as to whether a pigeon will still be fertile in the future, that pigeon will not be included in this auction. And that is the reason why such renowned birds as Super Romeo and Ben-ji (both no longer fertile since April 2017) and Nicky (egg-binding since 2017) will not be sold in auction. Due to Gaby’s emotional attachment to these birds, they will get to spend their days in a loft in his backyard.

Rudi De Saer was a passionate cyclist in his younger days, although he had already developed a keen interest in pigeon racing at the time. On one of his favourite training rides he made a stop in Dentergem, to visit Gaby Vandenabeele, but the grandmaster unfortunately was not home at that time. Luckily, he was able to meet him on one of his following visits. Rudi got straight to the point, asking for youngsters of all of his best birds. Direct youngsters of stock breeders Kleinen, Wittenbuik, Turbo, Limoges, Neptunus, etc. soon found themselves on their way to Rudi’s loft in Ruiselede.

No one would have guessed it at the time, but this is where this team’s national dominance in the long distance since 2009 took root. Among their many highlights are the following championship titles:

The Bliksem dynasty was paired to their own Kaaf-jes dynasty, and thus to their super class hen Kaafje BE07-4270406, as well as to her sire and brothers and sisters. This enabled the Gevaert-Lannoo combination to develop into a nationally renowned team in the shorter and longer middle distance.

Gevaert-Lannoo gained a reputation winning a 2nd Nat Bourges in 2007 with a direct descendant of their invaluable stock dam Chateauke BE05-3202164, herself a daughter of the renowned Chateauke of Cools-Blancke, winner of a 1st Prov Chateauroux 7,347 p. (she is herself a half-sister of Mona, the dam of Gloria) and thus a granddaughter of Bliksem-Vandenabeele.

They had a head start in pigeon racing in 2006. When Geert and Annick decided to start keeping pigeons, they had a clear plan and a well-defin-ed goal: they were eager to make it to the top. A friend introduced them to grandmaster Gaby Vandenabeele from Dentergem, who handed them a number of eggs. These would prove to be the driving force behind the their success story.

And they did not only obtain a number of eggs from Dentergem. They got along really well with Gaby, and, he gave them some invaluable advice and guidance. Unsurprisingly, their pigeon strain now consists for 90 to 95% of Gaby Vandenabeele birds.

Their first major successes soon followed. They clai-med an (inter)provincial first prize from Argenton, Blois, La Souterraine and Tours but their major breakthrough came in 2011 with a 1st Nat Gueret young birds. Tsaby1 x Kim 1 – would soon develop into a wor-ld renowned breeding pair, especially after their grandson Super Romeo claimed the title of 1st Nat Ace Pigeon Long Distance YLs KBDB in 2013. Several other talented racing birds have been bred from this fantastic pair in their home loft since.

Tauber was paired to Lieske, and together they are the parents of Kim1 (which died in early 2014). And that brings us right to stock pair Tsaby1 x Kim1, the parents of a 1st Nat Gueret and 1st Interprov Tours, and the grandparents of Super Romeo: 1st Nat Ace Pige-on Long Distance Yearlings KBDB 2013 for Gaby Vandenabeele. And Tsaby1 is a direct Vandena-beele bird as well: he comes from top bird Tsaar (1st-12th-18th Prov) paired to Betsy (a daughter of a 1st Nat Brive 16,007 p. for team A. D’huyvetter). Tauber x Lieske were also the parents of another highly renowned breeding bird in Deinze, namely Memphis. He is the sire of Chardon, Durango and Patriek (winner of a 1st Interprov Vierzon in 2014).

With Lieske developing into an invaluable stock dam almost right away, Geert and Annick decided to turn to Gaby again, to see if he had anything else on offer from Captain Blue x Nancy. Soon, another talented breeder was introduced, in the form of Orlando, a full brother of Lieske. Nancy would eventually be transferred to Deinze as well.

Besides Tsaby1 x Kim1, the pairing of Orlando x Nicofelia is also proving to be a high quality combination as well,

having bred several top class birds as well. One of the team’s very best pigeons that was bred from this combination is the outstanding Orlandor BE11-4245806.

He wins an impressive 4 top 100 prizes national and 9 top 100 prizes in the zone (of between 2,110 and 8,476 pigeons) between 2012 and 2014, including a 1st Nat Zone Tulle. Orlandor is himself the grand-father of Renate BE15-3095344, winner of a 1st Nat Argenton 11,215 p. for Dirk & Bart Delodder.

It was with the youngsters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of stock pair Jonge Bliksem x Dirkje that Jan Hooymans has claimed 12 first prizes NPO since ‘the year of Harry’ (2009), mainly in one day long distance races from 500 to 700km. He also claimed two provincial victories (sprint).

This golden bloodline has turned Jan Hooymans into an internationally renowned pigeon fancier.

Jan has always been fond of the pigeons of Gaby Vandenabeele. One day, Jan asked Gaby to create an inbred pairing for him: Bliksem paired to Dolores (a daughter of Wittenbuik, and a full sister of Kolonel, the sire of Bliksem). Gaby is not really an advocate of this type of close inbreeding, so Jan really had to persuade him to put the two birds together.

Rik obtained descendants of the best Vandenabee-le bloodlines, and his own champions were often paired to Gaby’s stock breeders, as part of a joint breeding. It was a win-win for both parties. Such pairings as Bliksem x Fryda, Bliksem x Aagje or Bliksem x Kaatje led to a boost in performance in both lofts. And he did not want just any pigeon: he wan-ted nothing but the very best bloodlines from Dentergem. He invested in two sons of Blauwe Fideel (winner of a 1st Nat Brive 1995), 2 daugh-ters of Ronker (winner of a 1st Nat Limoges ’95 and 1st Prov Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB ‘1994), and a youngster of Turbo (1st Prov Ace Pigeon Long Distance KBDB). These pigeons were crossbred with the team’s own stock bree-der Willequet, and that was the starting point of a highly successful career.

One of the most famous Houfflijn pigeons worldwide is arguably supercrack Geronimo. The dam of this superstar, Blauw Grietje, is a direct Vandenabeele pigeon: she is a daugh-ter of Brutus, himself a grandson of the world famous Wittenbuik. Geronimo developed into a world class breeding bird later on as well, as

the sire and grand-father of a whole host of new stars, including Geschulpten Geroni-mo, As Geronimo, and Star Geronimo. These pigeons have turned the Houfflijn pigeon breed into an interna-tionally famed team. They claimed a 1st Nat Cahors and they won the title of 2nd Nati-onal Champion Long Distance KBDB twice, both in 2006 and 2013. They also became 2nd General Champion of Belgium KBDB in 2006, and they won numerous first prizes and other top results at provincial and national level. All with the help of the Gaby Vandenabeele pigeons!

They are running one of Belgium’s best long distance pigeon families, one that is heavily based around direct Gaby Vandenabeele birds. Their incredible success story took root in the mid-1990s, when Patrick turned to Gaby Vandenabeele from Dentergem for new investments.

Martin obtained youngsters of several Vandenabee-le champions over the years, including Fideel (1st Prov. Bourges, 2nd Nat Limoges), Pipo, Bijter, Ja-son, Royal Blue, Falco, Captain Blue, Groten, Emill, Marcus, Romulus, Bambino and many others, and of course youngsters of current top breeder Rudy.

He discovered an invaluable new breeding dam in Fidele, a daughter of Fideel, born in 1985. She became the dam and grandmother of quite a number of race winners and cracks. One of her most illustrious descendants is without doubt Little Darco, one of the strongest pigeons of his genera-tion in the shorter middle distance in Belgium, and winner of 8 first prizes and an endless number of top results.

When Little Draco became 7th Nat Ace Pigeon Middle Distance KBDB, the shorter and longer dis-tance was still a single competition; they were split up only in 2005. Otherwise he could have finished in the top 3 every single season.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable, is that the two prizes were won by two nest brothers. The dam of the two birds, NL15-1274058, is a 100% Gaby Vandena-beele obtained through Anton Ruitenberg. Sanne is a daughter of Witpen Bliksem (of Anton Ruitenberg from Zwolle), which was inbred to Bliksem: he is a son of his top breeder 781 Zoon Bliksem (from the iconic Bliksem Vandenabeele x Kaatje - thus a full brother to Rudy) paired to Granddaughter Bliksem.

Clement De Mesmaeker – St.Ulriks-Kapelle (BE)This team has been a top contender in the national middle distance competition for years. They added another top result to their palmares in 2018 in the national race from Argenton, in rather difficult weather, winning a 1st Nat Zone Argenton of 3,486 p. Rik Cools – Ruiselede (BE)He was victorious not once but twice on 16th of June, winning a 1st and 2nd Interprovincial Chateauroux of 2,714 old birds. His winning hen was also his first nominated: super class hen Carla. She had already won a 1st Clermont earlier this season before winning this interprovincial first prize from Chateauroux. She also has a 24th Nat Chateauroux 29,580 p. and a 76th Prov Tours 6,083 p. to her name, just to name a few.

She originates from Pipo Junior from her father’s side, and he is a grandson of stock breeder Witpen Maurice 204/08, as well as a son of super class racing and bree-ding hen Molleke (4th Nat Argenton, 31st Nat Bourges and a granddaughter of stock breeder Schonen Bliksem).
