[email protected] Gloucester Advocate Wednesday April 23 2014 — 15 Endurance: Count The Chimes wins the 2530m Jim Anderson Handicap at last year’s Gloucester Cup meet Sport BOWLS WITH the pennants competition suspended over the Easter break, the only bowls last week were of a social nature. Last Thursday there were 30 participants in seven matches. Scores were high and 20 points were required for the top prize. Ray Smith and Barry Wade had a 31 to 13 win over Charlie Faulkner and Gary Spokes. In the runners-up position were Mark Tull and Bob Jones with their 17-point and 13- shot winning margin over Steve Howlett and Peter Jones. Two other teams managed 17 points but had smaller winning margins. Bob Crittenden and Lu Urby defeated Barry Peacock and Don Sutcliffe by 12 shots and Peter Green and Gordon Pritchard beat John West and Steve Higgins 23 to 14. Ron Stepto and Terry Higgins beat Terry Davies and Wayne Groves by six shots and Harry Cox, Frank Wells and Kevin Burley defeated Joe Holstein, Nico Duynhoven and Eric Latimore. Kevin Everett and Terry Carson snared 14 points for their six-shot win over Tony Tersteeg and Paul Sutton. On Saturday only 10 players fronted up and two matches went ahead. Peter Green, Vic Hebblewhite and Bob Charman defeated Terry Higgins, Terry Davies and Nico Duynhoven by a score of 25 shots to 12. In the second match Clive Redman and Steve Howlett went down to Barry Wade and John West by 23 shots to 18. This weekend the pennants competition springs back to life when the grade two team visits Taree Leagues Club and the grade five teams host the same opposition. This is a top of the table clash and is a must win for Gloucester if there is to be any chance of a top place finish. Matches start at 1pm sharp. The major singles semi finals have had to be postponed with a host of Manning district competitions involving club members. The singles and the final of the men’s fours will be played at a future time and date to be decided. Ladies THE Gloucester Women’s Bowling Club number three pennants team suffered a narrow loss against Forster in a play-off at the Taree Leagues Club last Wednesday. Only eight ladies contested social bowls last week. The winners were Jan Griffith and Pirjo Maurer. The raffle winners were Norma Relf, Jill Everett and Joan Ridgeway. The Easter raffle winners were Kerrie Green, Paula Standon and Pam Judd. For games of major singles will be played today. Morning tea today is Deanne Styche; April 30 Bev Murray and Denise Redman. GOLF GLOUCESTER Golf Club members contested a stableford event on Saturday, April 19. The event was sponsored by Garners Home Hardware. The winner in A grade was L Wilson with 38 points. The B grade winner was Brian Osborne with 39 and the C grade winner was John Barraclough with 36. The ball comp winners were B Osborne 39, L Wilson 38, J Barraclough 36, B Peacock 36, W Maddalena 35, K Whitby 35, K Cross 35, A Besr 35, M Coglan 34. The A grade NTP winner was S Crichton. B Osborne won the B grade NTP while the C grade winner was P Garland. The second shot winner was C Peacock. Nathan McInnes holed an eagle on the 17th. The C grade captain’s long drive winner was G Kemp and the stayer’s award went to B Redman. The Gloucester Coal super sevens winners were G Hesford 20, W Radford 18, C Pritchard 18, J Barraclough 17, R O’Brien 17, P Blanch 16, P Blanch 16. The first Deros match must be completed by May 24. This week’s event is a stableford sponsored by Roadies Café. Sunday, April 27 is the Rotary charity day. Interested players can contact Chris Pritchard. Veterans GLOUCESTER Veterans Golf Club hosted 36 visitors from Beresfield last week. A total of 25 locals played in an individual stableford competition sponsored by Bill Hunter and Keith Caldwell. The winner was Bill Norris with a commendable score of 35. Runners-up and ball winners were John Herd with 34 points, followed by Terry Cox (33), Bert Newman, Bruce Fraser and Bill Murray (32) and Chris Pritchard (30). The NTP winner was Bruce Fraser and the stayer’s award went to birthday boy Reg O’Brien. Special thanks to David Hjorth, Jim Dunn and Bruce Fraser for cooking the lunch for the visitors. Next week’s competition will be a three-person aggregate stableford with an individual competition in conjunction. A COUPLE of showers saw the umbrellas go up last Wednesday, but it did not deter the 15 ladies who contested the second monthly medal at Gloucester Golf Club. The event was sponsored by Sandra and Ricky Lawler. Evelyn Blanch returned to form to win with 32 points. Jenny Burley was second with 31, beating Debbie Wilson on a count- back. The ball winners were Lorna Taylor, Cheryl Goodrich and Effie Crawley. NTP on the fourth and 13th was Val Smith who chipped in for two. The division one NTP winner on the sixth and 15th was Val Smith and the division two winner was Debbie Wilson. President Jill handed a cheque for $4000 to club president Ann Mullen on behalf of members to assist in the purchase of two new tills. The new tills will be of great help to the staff and running of the club. Members are looking forward to a lot of fun with a visit from members of the bowls, tennis and croquet clubs on Friday, June 6. Treasurer Shirley has been flown back to Newcastle and was pleased to see some visitors. She will be happier still when she gets back to Gloucester. As there were quite a few players away on Wednesday, April 9 the program was changed to a stableford. There were 10 players and both Gai Randall and Cheryl Goodrich finished on 31 points with Gai win- ning on a countback. Balls went to Jill Carson on 28 points, Evelyn Blanch on 25 and A Cravino with 25. The NTP winner on the fourth and 13th was E Blanch. The division one winner on the sixth and 15th was G Randall. There is a sheet up for players keen to contest the Rotary four-person ambrose on Sunday, April 27. Casey Gooch from Gooch Agencies said the business had been sponsoring the race meet for the past five years. “It’s a great day out for everyone,” she said. “It’s a good opportunity to get dressed up, let your hair down and catch up with peo- ple you might not have seen for a while.” Newcombe’s will run a bus service from Gloucester to the racecourse for the meet.
