What is happening to our planet?

Typical person’s carbon footprint in MEDCs

MEDCs = More economically developed countries.

PIE CHART TOTAL = 100%

Direct contributions to Co2 emissions

Indirect contributions to Co2 emissions

CARBON FOOTPRINT = Carbon emissions.

Which ones do you think we might have more control over?

The Greenhouse effect https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zLuqSYF68E

https://www3.epa.gov/climatechange/kids/basics/today/greenhouse-effect.html

The Earth gets energy from the sun. The Earth’s surface absorbs this energy and heats up. The Earth cools off by giving off this energy in a different form, called infrared radiation. While this radiation needs to scape to outer space, the greenhouse gases absorb it thus keeping the Earth’s surface warmer too. This is called the Greenhouse effect.

• Greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere, which makes the Earth warmer. • People are adding several

types of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere making matters worse for the weather, wildlife, plants and humans.

A waste of my time?Yesterday, I gathered up all my old newspapers. My sister is always reminding me to recycle, but the recycling bin was outside, it was raining… and I couldnt be bothered. I shrugged my shoulders as I picked up a paper which had just fallen on the floor. After all, what have my old newspapers got to do with global warming ? Nothing, right?Wrong. As I picked up the newspapers, I noticed a report about greenhouse gases in the USA. In fact, it was this chart that caught my eye. It shows the different causes of greenhouse gases. It was “Deforestation” that stood out. That meant forests being cut down for farming, housing and, yes, paper (my newwspapers). I sighed. I was responsable for that blue sector . I stepped out into the pouring rain, and walked over to the recycling bin. I knew I was doing the right thing.

This week you will have to write 2 diary entries (150 word each) called “GREEN GUILT” This will describe the days when you couldn’t bother about recycling or global warming or printed too much paper or even dropped papers on your school floor.

RUBRICS: TOTAL 10 points (5 points each diary entry)- Vocabulary from the unit, past tenses, organization and punctuation.

Next week you will have to write ONE ARTICLE called “GREEN REVELATION” (similar to the previous article – 200 words) telling the reader how you have changed and how you are now more aware of your life’s impact in the planet.

RUBRICS: TOTAL 10 points- Vocabulary from the unit, present and future tenses, organization and punctuation.
