From the Principal’s Desk Kia ora Ugly Shakespeare This week, instead of assembly, students attended the “Ugly Shakespeare” drama production that travels around New Zealand visiting secondary schools. This small group of talented performers take Shakespearean drama and present it in a context that makes it relevant to today’s youth. In doing this they manage to communicate the importance of Shakespeare in English literature. Inzone Bus On Monday the Inzone bus visited us. This bus delivers career information to students using information technology. Web Site Last week Tokomairiro High School launched its new web site which can be located at www.tokohigh.school.nz. Next time you have access to the internet, have a look. We intend to keep this site up to date with information including notification of future events. We are now heading in to week 4 of Term 1 and the majority of our students are getting down to the business of learning as well as participating and contributing in various activities. The Australian Sports Tour group are busy fundraising for their trip in July and, on their behalf, I thank everyone who has supported this group as they work at reaching their targets. OPEN WEEK Each year Tokomairiro High School throws open its doors so parents can come into the school and see, or be a part of, what is happening. This year Open Week is 8th to 12th March. Mark these dates on your calendar. We want you to join your child’s class for some of their lessons during this week. You do not need to make appointments and we suggest you check you child’s logbook to see what subjects they have. It is an ideal opportunity for you to see for yourselves the programmes running in each of the subjects and to meet some of the teachers. When you come to school, sign in at the office (this is a legal requirement) and if you are unsure, Mrs Robins will be able to direct you where your child will be found. Quite possibly the teachers may also get you taking part in the lesson if it is appropriate. It is likely your child will tell you not to come, but please do, we want to see you. During the week, please feel free to also attend Monday and Friday assemblies (8.50am) as well as the Magic Show, with a strong health message planned for Thursday, period 5, or watch some of the sporting events of the East Otago sports exchange on Friday at the Edgar Centre. It is during this week that you can also meet with teachers in the more formal setting of parent interviews, to be held on Wednesday 11th March. You make an appointment through the office for these and will be informed in more detail about these shortly

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT A number of resources, including textbooks, reading books and films are currently outstanding from 2009 and earlier. Many students at the senior level, in particular Year 13 2009, have books that belong to the English Department, or one of the teachers in the English Department . All books that belong to departments, or are the personal property of teachers, need to be returned, so please check at home. These are urgently needed for 2010 programmes. Please could parents and caregivers and students ensure such resources are returned.

Ugly Shakespeare On Monday 22nd February the Tokomairiro High School students were entertained by three amazing actors from the Ugly Shakespeare Company with a rendition of Macbeth. The Ugly Shakespeare Company has a proven record in New Zealand schools, providing consistently high quality live theatre performances since 1996. The company began with only 72 schools on the list and since then their success and the demand for visits have extended their audience reach, to over 120 schools nationwide on an annual basis. This growth is a combination of their ability to actually engage with the teens themselves as well as their determination to continue with what they believe – that is to make professional, live

theatre accessible to youth. T h e U g l y Shakespeare Company has a unique approach to both Shakespeare and live performance. They a re s t rong believers in getting amongst the students and relating to them on a level that is both

contemporary and non-patronising. Their success lies in their ability to utilise teen culture within their shows. This includes using current teen vernacular references to film, TV or music that is relevant, as well as adapting the show on the road to fit changing trends.

Inzone Bus

On Monday 22nd February the Inzone bus visited Tokomairiro High School. The Inzone careers unit road show is a careers expo, in the form of a specially designed bus that has 22 ‘pods’ hosting 33” LCD audio/visual screens, which contain information covering a range of different careers and industries. All the students had a chance to visit the bus and found it very

interesting.

Homework: A Guide to

Keeping the Stress to a

Minimum From the first year your child starts school, homework becomes a feature of daily life and as they get older, they are expected to complete more homework. Unfortunately this can become the cause of serious tension in your home so here are some suggestions on how to reduce homework battles every night. Make a Homework Plan: Some young people prefer to get their homework over and done with as soon as possible when they get home; others need a chance to unwind first. Discuss this with your child, and then together set up a routine around their preference. Remember food, downtime, and fun time should also feature in this plan. TV can be a reward for homework done, perhaps. If your child has after school commitments such as work or sport, these also need to be built into their plan. And remember, once you have settled on this plan; make sure your child keeps to it. Create a Homework Space: It is always easier to settle down to homework if the space to do it is comfortable. If you can, provide a table with good lighting for your child to work at. Also try to remove the distractions that will entice your child away from their studies. Most young people will tell you they study better with the TV on or their MP3 playing loudly. These can be a distraction if not monitored so come to some compromise around them. For a short period every day perhaps the telephone or social networking should not be available to your child during their homework time. It is a good idea to have at least a little quiet time while they are working. Chat to Teachers About Workload: Homework is given for a number of reasons and is part of the active learning process. Often parents ask for it. Sometimes it is to get students to revisit work done during the day or earlier, it may be to complete tasks begun in class or to set them up for their next lesson. While homework is often built around personal research and so parent help could be welcome it also offers our young the opportunity to develop independent study and work habits. Homework can be used to initiate a discussion between family members, about what has happened during the child’s day. If you find your child is becoming too stressed by the task or the amount of homework given, contact their teacher and talk this over with them. There is usually a solution to be found. The school wants your child to have success, and will do what it can to help this occur.

News from the Milton

Dental Centre Sam Brady has recently begun working at the Milton Dental Centre. Sam grew up in North Otago and after attending Waitaki Boy's High School he studied Dentistry at the University of Otago. Since graduating, Sam has worked with Oral Surgeon Peter Christmas in Invercargill Hospital, and in General Practice in both Invercargill and Dunedin. Sam is exceptionally well qualified and we are delighted to have him working in Milton. He loves working in the rural environment and he really enjoys meeting people. Kirsty has been working as a hygienist with us in Milton for some time now. She works with us on Tuesdays and Fridays, and for the rest of the week she is a clinical tutor on the new Bachelor of Oral Health Sciences programme at the School of Dentistry in Dunedin. Kirsty has recently been trained to do in-house bleaching for tooth whitening and removal of stains in enamel, and to assist with this we have just purchased a new Bleaching Light which enables us to offer this service in the surgery without the need for patients to wear mouth trays over a period of a few days. The in house bleaching takes about an hour and the results so far

h a v e b e e n excellent. We are very pleased to be able to offer this service now in Milton. Photo: New Milton Dentist Sam Brady and Hygienist Kirsty Barltrop.

Swimming Lessons After play on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays the senior classes go over to the pool for swimming lessons. Some of the older children are going to be doing the Swim for Life 200 metre challenge which is when you swim six lengths without stopping. The people who are doing this are practising swimming long distances. Also, some of our better swimmers are trying to qualify for the South Otago Swimming Championship next month. We do many different types of activities to improve different parts of our swimming technique. For example, some groups are using float boards to practise leg action and keeping flat across the top of the

water. We think we are very lucky to have these lessons because not a lot of schools throughout the country have them. The juniors go over for their swimming lessons after lunch every day except Friday. We all really enjoy swimming.

Playcentre News Colours and shapes can be fun. Continuing our colour theme this past week, we have had so much fun with this topic. Thanks to one very enthusiastic child bringing a game from home we spent one session playing a colour and shapes game. Thanks Brodie. Healthy eating has captured the children’s imaginations, and one of the activities we have done is an experiment with potato chips showing exactly how much fat is in one packet. The results are on display for all to see. It does not make for nice viewing. This week we will have our beach trip, so fingers are crossed for

good weather.

Milton Kindergarten News Through the fence What a wonderful opportunity the children at Milton Kindergarten have to keep in touch with their friends who

have left kindergarten, their older siblings and family members to later become accustomed to moving onto school. We enjoy many special moments ‘through the fence’ that help us appreciate the sense of community of Milton. There are also many opportunities for wider learning experiences with school visits, visiting the School Library and taking advantage of the school grounds for kite flying and exploring.

Council Agendas Available

Online It is now easier for residents and ratepayers to keep track of decisions made by the Clutha District Council, with meeting agendas now available online. Chief Executive Charles Hakkaart said meeting agendas for the full Council, Standing Committees, the District Development Board and the Community Boards are now accessible via the Council website www.cluthadc.govt.nz “The intention is to make information about Council and its decisions more readily available to the community and stakeholders and also to reduce future photocopying and postage costs.” Mr Hakkaart said agendas would generally be available online on the Monday prior to a particular meeting. Interested people can receive an email notification advising them when a particular agenda is available. Agendas can be downloaded in PDF, either in full, or by each agenda item to make the service more user-friendly and accessible for those on dial-up Internet connections. Minutes of each meeting will also be published on the website, after they are confirmed at the subsequent meeting.

Youth Council Approves

Development Fund The Clutha District Youth Council will allocate up to $2,000 towards a youth development fund aimed to help young people in the district reach their goals. Although the details are yet to be finalised, the intention is for the fund to be available for young people to apply to, and recipient(s) then selected by an interview panel consisting of several youth councillors, one councillor and one staff member. Once the process and criteria for the fund has been finalised, it will be advertised throughout the district. The decision to establish the fund was made at Monday night’s Inaugural Youth Council meeting for 2010. This year’s Youth Council has seven new members – Danae Bradley (Blue Mountain College), Hayden Cockburn (The Catlins Area School), Terry Batt (Lawrence Area School), Brianna Watt (Lawrence Area School), Natasha Cameron (South Otago High School), Courtney Tekoronga (Tokomairiro High School), and Daniel Fenton (workplace representative). They join Todd Murray (Blue Mountain College), Meghan Bennet (South Otago High School), Christiaan Faber (Tokomairiro High School) and Brendan Morrison (workplace representatives) who are all returning members. Cr Bruce Vollweiler and Cr Chris Hargest remain as Council’s representatives on the Youth Council. Mayor Juno Hayes officially welcomed the Youth Council members who then made declarations in front of family and friends. Workplace representative Brendan Morrison was then elected to the position of Chair, while Todd Murray was elected Deputy Chair. The Youth Council then got down to its first official business by allocating up to $2,000 of its discretionary $5,000 annual budget towards the Youth Council Development Fund. Youth Councillors will be researching options for the remainder of the $5,000 budget, with ideas floated to date including running a youth event throughout the district and improved signage for the Tuapeka Mouth Punt. The Youth Council is a Standing Committee of Council, enabling it to regularly report to and make recommendations to the full Council. Milton Garden Club Our first Meeting for the year was on Monday February 8th when we travelled to the Balclutha area. The Stirling garden of Alison Dempster was our first stop for the day. This is an extensive garden of established trees and shrubs under planted with hostas, lavenders, roses and ground covers all making a colourful display. A short walk across the road was the garden of Evelyn Mason. This featured several vegetable garden plots, herb gardens, trees and shrubs, an aviary and huge clumps of lilies in full bloom, a spectacular sight. This garden is still being developed, but full of interest. Matau Nursery was next on the list and many plants were purchased. Then it was on to Lorraine Ramsay’s garden for our picnic lunch. As it was a particularly hot day, we all appreciated the large shady trees as we had a leisurely lunch, a chat and a stroll around her large garden. The last stop for the day was Wake Robin Nursery in Balclutha, where more plants were purchased. All agreed it was a relaxing and enjoyable day out. Raffle winners were Pat Ralston, Kathleen Matheson and Becky Matheson. On Monday March 8th we are travelling to visit gardens and the Blue Mountain Nursery in Tapanui. Bus leaves Elizabeth Street at 9am. Please bring lunch and drinks for the day. Telephone Ngarita 417 4932.

Our whole school has signed up for the 200m challenge. The teachers are very proud of everybody. By Jorjah Mason-Waru. One of our swimmers swam 78 widths. That is a lot of swimming. Everyone had fun. Tokoiti is part of the 200m challenge. I’ve got a 200m passport. Some of us moved up swimming levels, but the best thing of all, everybody tried their best. By Zamira
