Daily Routine “This is how we do it…”

SHARED READING

Shared Reading is a time to develop and enhance the literacy skills of our preschool students. During shared reading, children are introduced to book concepts such as left to right “tracking”, book and page orientation, page manipulation, picture recognition, and word use. Teachers usually focus on 1 book for a 2 week period. In the first week, children complete a picture walk which introduces them to the characters and concepts in the story while providing them with the opportunity to use their oral language skills to make comments, generate predictions and draw conclusions. In the second week, the teacher reads the actual story and students participate in choral reading of repeated lines. They also respond to various questions. Shared reading is a great time to facilitate sentence expansion utilizing the tip of the month! J SLP’s can intervene during this part of the daily routine in several ways which include:

• Facilitating students comprehension of specific concepts such as: spatials, present progressive actions, descriptives

• Helping students make associations between pictures and any associated actions

• Assisting students with sequential ordering of story events

Expansion/Extension When working with children who are

acquiring language skills, a helpful tip is to expand or build upon what the child has said. Matching a child’s utterances

and adding more information gives them insight into new vocabulary and provides

a model for how they should structure their sentences. In addition, we build an

element of trust by showing the child that we’ve heard them and value what

they have to say.

Good to Know

Project UPSTART Project UPSTART is a program designed to assist eligible students, who are in transition, with educational needs. If a student is doubled up, “sharing the housing of other persons due to loss of housing as a result of economic hardship or similar reasons” they may be able to receive specific supports that will enable them to continue with their academic pursuits.
