Reserve Your Table Now for the Annual DinnerThe Middlebury Chamber of Commerce will host its annual dinner at the Essenhaus Inn & Conference Center on March 10th. The dinner will feature the 2nd Annual Business Expo for member businesses as well as the new photo contest for the cover of the 2015 Chamber Membership Directory.

The guest speaker for the evening will be Mike Garty. Mike is the owner of Uncommon Leadership, LLC, and works for Lippert Components in the area of leadership development. Mike is a graduate of Taylor University and Asbury Theological Seminary.

The business expo is open to chamber members, is limited to 10 exhibitors, and is a great way to introduce or re-introduce your business to other members of the Middlebury business community. An eight-foot table and basic electricity is available.

The directory photo contest is open to all area photographers. The subject can be anything the photographer feels exemplifies the essence of Middlebury. All entries must provide proof that the photograph was taken within the Middlebury school district. Photographs will be on display during the annual dinner and the winner will be determined by votes from those attending the dinner. Flyers detailing further contest rules will be available after February 5th at the Chamber office.

Volunteers NeededThe Chamber is looking forward to welcoming guests to the community in 2015. Volunteers are needed to staff the Chamber office for a few hours each week. Knowledge of the Middlebury Community is very helpful, but not necessary. Please contact the Chamber office at 825.4300 for more information.

Changes at the ChamberChamber director Sam Pohl has announced that he will be leaving the chamber in the upcoming weeks.

The Chamber board of directors thanks Sam for his years of service and wishes him the best in his future endeavors.

From where we were to where we are now, the people of Middlebury have done many amazing, beneficial things. Northridge High School has been offering a ‘Career Exploration Internship’ (commonly known as ‘Work Experience’) for years. Headed by coordinator/

supervisor Mike Wickersham, it is an elective for seniors with three consecutive hours free in their daily schedule. Students find a place of employment (or volunteer work) and a supervisor there will train and evaluate them, coordinating with the school.

How It Works“Students must attend class meetings and complete online exercises intended to enhance their work experience and training,” says Wickersham. “Local business owners and managers also come to share personal guidance and advice in developing their employability skills.” Recent topics have been compensation and benefits, labor costs, safety issues in the workplace, and work hour limitations for students.

In this, his first year of supervising the program, Wickersham is passionate about what he does. “I was excited to work with our local business owners, not to mention all of the new contacts I have made across Elkhart, LaGrange, and St. Joe Counties. We have a great group of employers working to train our students and provide good learning experiences. It’s been refreshing to get out of the classroom and travel to each business and see what the students are doing, discuss their progress, and help them set goals.”

What They LearnThe students are gaining real world, hands-on skills that cannot

be learned in a classroom setting. From work ethic to leadership skills, administrative needs to communication, our seniors are being well-prepped for their futures. “All of the students have been successful and some students have greatly improved their employability skills in a way they had not been able to demonstrate in school,” says Wickersham.

Jennifer Schreiber, Assistant Manager at the Essenhaus Village Shops, says “…it has been a fantastic opportunity for both employer and student. Through this program, I’ve met some talented, hard-working, and self-motivated young individuals. I think this type of work experience will be helpful in building the students’ resumes and in giving them a well-rounded experience for future reference.”

Good for Our CommunityThe best part of this program is how it strengthens our community. Students establish relationships with local business contacts which will be helpful after graduation. The businesses work closely with the school and give feedback to the curriculum, and the school and students learn to reach out to their community, working together as a whole.

Valentine’s DanceThe Middlebury Men’s Club will host their 23rd Annual Valentine’s Dance 8 pm - Midnight on February 14th at American Legion Post 210. Music will be provided by SL4 (formerly Total Recall), playing all your favorite tunes. Plans include snack foods, cash bar, 50/50 drawings, and door prizes. The middlebury community Food Pantry is currently located downtown in a well-loved older home next to the

First mennonite church. it helps to provide food and personal needs items to more than 500 families every month. right now they are in the midst of planning to relocate to a larger, more user-friendly facility: the former Pleasant Oaks mennonite church on cr 16. Some big changes are ahead, bringing great things to our community. Here’s what you need to know…

What a Difference a Move MakesThe new location will provide a larger facility with more wide open spaces. going from 900 to 1800 square feet will give the Food Pantry the opportunity to offer several new, much-needed services. all of the Food Pantry operations will finally be able to be housed in a single building which is a much better, safer facility on a single level. (no stairs to walk up and down is a pretty big deal!) There will be greater ease of use and the Food Pantry will be better able to receive deliveries. all of this leads to dramatically increased efficiency for everyone involved.

equity offered through proposed future community work days. “Volunteers could be used to help take some walls down, put other walls up, install doors, move dirt, and other projects which will lower that overall cost,” says rich Troyer, Food Pantry Board chair. “we want to put less money into the building and more money towards the food.”

First mennonite church has pledged $75,000 to go toward these costs, and the relocation fund currently has an available balance of $12,420. The relocation Fundraising committee members are Sam Pohl, Kris mueller, Jeff James, Tammie griffin, and Tom Bontreger.

Project Name Contest!For now, the project is simply being referred to as the ‘Food Pantry relocation Project’. They are struggling to settle on an inspired name for the project, and they are asking for OUr help!

Submit your project name suggestions by the end of February to the middlebury Food Pantry Facebook page or email suggestions to [email protected]. The new project name will be determined by popular opinion and the winner will receive a $250 cash prize!

The Friends of the Middlebury Parks have some challenges for our community!

First challenge:Learn about the Trails of MiddleburyThis is a planned system of non-motorized trails, paths, and lanes linking neighborhoods, parks, schools, and businesses in the Town of Middlebury. The trail system provides safe routes for residents, visitors, workers, and especially students to bike, walk, or run to destinations in the Middlebury community.

Second challenge:Help add to the Trails of MiddleburyThe Friends of the Middlebury Parks has partnered with the Town of Middlebury Parks Department, the Friends of the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail, Das Dutchman Essenhaus, Middlebury Greencroft, Middlebury School Corporation, IU Health Goshen, and That Pretty Place Bed and Breakfast to build the Ridge Run Trail system. The Ridge Run Trail system is a multi-use trail system that will connect the Middlebury Greenway on the Pumpkinvine Nature Trail at the US 20 tunnel to the IU Health Goshen medical clinic, the Greencroft Middlebury retirement community, the Das Dutchman Essenhaus campus, and the Middlebury schools campus.

The Friends of the Middlebury Parks has received a challenge grant from the Elkhart County Community Foundation to help build the Ridge Run Trail system. To receive the $50,000 grant from the Community Foundation, the Friends must raise $100,000 in matching funds. If you have an interest in supporting the expansion of the multi-use, non-motorized trail system in Middlebury, please consider making a donation to the Friends of the Middlebury Parks.

My name is Aria Salisbury, and I’m a 17-year-old senior at Northridge High School. I’m part of the marching band, the concert bands, and the National Honor Society. Along with this, I am also an Americorps Volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club of Middlebury.

An OpportunityI was presented with the opportunity to become an Americorps Volunteer and member in mid-September through my being a part of the National Honor Society.

When I found out that no one else had stepped up to volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club, I wanted to find out more information. It sounded exciting and, soon enough, I became the Americorps Member Volunteer!

Helping OutAs a volunteer, I work in two different places at the Club: the Learning Center and the

Games Room. In these two places, I am a supervisor for kids ranging from Kindergarten to 6th grade. Along with that, I help the Education Director, Brittany Bayless, with some of the activities in which the kids partake at the Learning Center. I also help with any homework needs that students may have during homework and reading time. This may include helping with essentially any subject they have, so I have to be prepared!

Making RelationshipsI think my favorite thing about being an Americorps Volunteer is the relationships that I make with the kids. Though my role as a Volunteer at the Club may seem trivial as I walk around to monitor the kids while they play games or do homework, I get to make relationships with the kids at the Club and this means a lot to me because not only am I an authority figure, but I also strive to be a good role model for them.

As I plan to major in Education in college next year, this is the perfect opportunity for me. I am grateful to the Boys and Girls Club of Middlebury and to our community for all that they do to make such a wonderful place possible for the kids!

NHS German Students Visit Chicago

Christmas Giving Continues at NorthridgeIf you walk into the main entrance of Northridge High School, you’ll notice a Christmas tree still standing. No, it’s not because we forgot; rather, it’s the beginning of a service project sponsored by National Honor Society and coordinated by NHS member Hannah Digert called The Giving Tree Project.

Hannah suffers from leukemia and has been undergoing treatment for several months. At present, she is doing well and able to attend school regularly. Her experiences with cancer treatments have led her to create The Giving Tree Project. As a leukemia patient, Hannah knows the ups and downs of dealing with life

under these conditions. So Hannah has acquired a list of about thirty young people who, like herself, are going through treatment and she is asking for help to assemble ‘birthday buckets’ for each of them.

The list of items is fairly specific, but anyone interested in helping with donations of items or money should contact Ellen Augustine at the high school (825.2142) or email [email protected]. We will be happy to supply you with a list of items and any further information you might need. The Giving Tree Project began January 16th and will continue through February 13th.

in december, a number of nHS german students went to the chicago Christkindlmarkt (Outdoor german christmas market) in daley Plaza in downtown chicago. The market is the largest christmas market of its kind outside of germany. it consists of vendors selling hand-made blown glass and wood-carved christmas ornaments, crafts, candy, and german food and beverages. many of the vendors come from germany each year to be at the market. This trip is a great opportunity to experience german culture and food, and even to speak the language with native germans! The market is named for the Christkind: the christ child who brings the children presents and candy at christmas in germany. The outdoor christmas market in germany is a tradition dating back to the middle ages and nHS is quickly making it one of our traditions as we try to send our students each year.

2015 HiS Spelling Bee Participants

Heritage 5th grade students participated in the 7th annual Spelling Bee on January 12th. Twenty-six students earned spots in the grade level Bee by earning the top two spots in their respective classrooms. Participants practiced for several weeks, learning words like ‘euphonious’, ‘froufrou’, and ‘jambalaya’. after twelve rounds, the spelling candidates were whittled down to the top two spellers: Lexie Huys and ava Yoder. ava won the top honors by correctly spelling the word ‘potassium’ during the fifteenth round. Heritage intermediate can send three spellers to the regional Spelling Bee, so third place speller evan nay will be joining ava and Lexie at the next level! The regional Spelling Bee will be held at Bethel college on march 11th, 2015. congratulations to all of the HiS Spelling Bee competitors for a job well done!

Christmas ProgramOn december 4th, Jefferson's 2nd & 3rd grade students performed during the christmas program. The 2nd grade students were singing Away in a Manger in the picture. The program was directed by rhonda Yoder and the accompanist was Patty wise.

Cookies & Claywe had our 3rd annual ‘cookies and clay Project’ on december 6th. Students were able to pick up their holiday-themed clay ornaments that they worked so hard to create, and participate in a paper craft with their parents while sampling christmas cookies donated by many Orchard View families. The $405 in donations went to the middlebury Food Pantry, where it was matched by an anonymous donor to equal $810. a big thank-you goes out to our parents for supporting their children and community.

Our first graders were in the giving spirit this year. instead of having a gift exchange, they decided to make birthday party supply bags to donate to the pantry. These included items such as cake mix, balloons, party hats, and other supplies you would need to throw a birthday party. On the last day of school before christmas break, our first grade classes took their 60+ donated birthday party bags and loaded them into the car to be delivered to the pantry.

Snow! Unlike last year, the students had to wait this year to get a fun pile of snow to play in. The magic of

playing in the snow during recess is something which endures throughout the years!

Food Pantry Drivemiddlebury elementary School staff and students had their annual food pantry drive during the month of december. The students were able to collect almost 1,900 items to help stock the shelves at the middlebury community Food Pantry! Students were challenged to bring in certain amounts and, because of those amounts being met, mr. miller, mr. Loar, and mr. Lemmon all dressed up like Buddy the elf to lead the students as they walked to the pantry. a special thank-you goes out to all of our parents for encouraging your children to give back, the middlebury Police department for traffic control, and Kris mueller for the wonderful photography.

What an Endeavor!

did you know the middle school choirs have almost 450 students? even with a 999-seat auditorium, a group this size requires two performances to accommodate everyone. For the christmas concerts, parents donated over $1,000 for sack lunches for the kids, nmS cafeteria workers spent an entire afternoon assembling lunches, and over 200 parents volunteered their time. mrs. armington and mr. norwood thank the parents and community for all their help.

Things are changing all the time; I wanted to take a moment to share with you a changing of the guard at Washburn Heating and Air Conditioning…now becoming Washburn Heating and Cooling LLC.

Eugene and Darcy Washburn have served the Middlebury and surrounding Elkhart, LaGrange, and St. Joseph counties for the past 21 years. They have been planning and anticipating their retirement and relocation to a permanent residence in Florida for several years. Their faithful service and dedication to you and people like you is not often seen in the service industry. When passing the business along, Eugene and Darcy placed a high priority on finding someone with the same values and care for the customer.

Providence brought the Washburns and the VanderWerfs together. Stephen and Robin VanderWerf finalized an agreement on 12/13/14.

Stephen considers himself to be the last of the old timers. He created VanderWerf Energy in Niles, MI in 1983. VWE became a Lennox dealership and serviced all brands of furnaces, air conditioners, and heat pumps (specializing with geothermal systems). His family bought him out in the late 90s. Stephen became the marketing manager for an electric utility for five years. In 2003, he created Geothermal Specialist, Inc. which employs 13+ employees serving a geographic range from the Illinois border to the west ~ Sturgis, MI to the east ~ Covert – Paw Paw, MI to the north ~ Rochester – Rensselaer IN to the south.

Washburn Heating and Cooling LLC will remain in the Middlebury – Bristol area. Stephen is currently exploring his options for the business location and will be personally relocating into the Middlebury area soon.

All existing service contracts, agreements and proposals will be honored. Although I mentioned change, it’s my expectation that you’ll see everything the same… just new faces. I look forward to seeing you soon!
