Funky Bass Groove (L#67)

Your Action Plan

1. I composed the groove within this lesson todemonstrate a couple of interesting techniques thatyou can use within your own playing. But before weget into those, it's important that you have a goodvisualization of the G7 dominant chord and the Gminor pentatonic scale. Learn the G7 arpeggio shapefrom the second finger of your fretting hand (if you'reunsure of your shapes refer to the 'How to PracticeArpeggios’ tutorial, as this is the main shape we'll beusing throughout the groove. For the fills we'll beusing a G minor pentatonic scale so familiarizeyourself with that scale and learn it within theposition we'll be using.

2. Work through the tutorial slowly. Learn the grooveand make sure to always refer whatever is happeningwithin the riff back to either the G7 arpeggio shape orthe G minor pentatonic scale. Understanding whyand how the arpeggio and scale work within thegroove is as important as learning to play the actualgroove itself.

It's this deeper understanding of functional harmony that will change your bass playing and musicianship forever.

Now I want you to create your own groove. I want you to use both techniques used within the original groove I showed you in the lesson. These were, starting on a chord tone that isn't the root note, and superimposing a minor pentatonic scale over the G7 chord to create fills.
