FUNDING A NEW PROJECT:

HOSTEL FOR GIRLS

[email protected]

Background

Fifteen years ago, on observing the marginal level of education among the poor rural children ofPurkal, G.K. Swamy decided to literally take matters in his own hands. He identified students whoshowed promise and put in long hours with them after school to help them cope up in their studies.

The Principal from a local school helped secure scholarships for these students to attend an English-medium school. The founding teachers worked untiringly with the students to improve their English. However, by the time they were proficient, they were too far behind in their other subjects.

In this way a small gesture of free tutoring evolved into the idea of building a school which wouldimpart outstanding education and complete care to the underprivileged children of the community.

A glimpse of PYDS – Year 2006 to 2009

With God’s grace, the society grew from strength to strength in terms of the performance of ourstudents, the quality of assistance provided to our poor children, educational partnerships etc.

The PYDS Learning Academy is now a CBSE approved school from Class 1 to 12 assisting about 300poor children with outstanding education and comprehensive care.

From conducting after school coaching to now being a one stop complete care centre forunderprivileged children; the journey has been challenging and rewarding. The only validation thatwe look for is in the success of these children.

Engrossed in studies… Ecstatic winners of PYDS

The only asset we had was our unshakeable faith and the strength of our vision…

… your generous support made it happen.

Our priority is to assist children coming from families which are at the bottom of the socio-economicladder. They need to be pulled out from the utter hopelessness that poverty brings; platitudes areof no consequence – demonstration of a positive intervention is the only route to rebuild their self-confidence and dignity. These children live in harsh conditions, a geographically remote andvulnerable area – it has been our solemn resolve to give blanket support for long years to the mostneedy, so that they can translate their dream of a better future.

Reaching out and assisting the poorest of the poor in the community

Homes of the poor – temporary shelters with no power, plumbing, flooring…

Our Focus…

The thrust has been on holistic, quality education. An enabling environment, competent teachers, latest techniques, cutting edge programmes, computer efficiency and sensitive handling of thechildren are a testimony to our commitment towards excellence. The endeavor is to shape and groomthem for a fantastic future with expansive vistas – they can dream big and make things happen in theirlives. It is about transformation, not a mere up gradation.

Our Focus…

Launching them in their life and career

On completion of their schooling, lack of funds pose a major hurdle in the commencement ofprofessional university courses and degrees. They have no means of their own and need assistance inthe form of scholarships, grants etc. Consistent effort and tenacious follow ups need to be put in;today 22 of our students have been able to pursue a university education which is a significant stepforward towards their secured, stable future.

The culmination of our endeavor is in the transformation of a withered bud into a fruit bearing tree– we stand firmly by the side of our students till the time they are ready to fly independently.

PYDS- much more than just a school…

• PYDS isn’t just a mere learning facility; it practices the principles of ‘Gurukul’ helping very poorchildren that it mentors, find an environment that can maximize learning.

• All that is provided to these students who are amongst the poorest is not merely free but of thehighest quality. The goal is to help these children access the same opportunities that children fromeconomically advantaged families can aspire for.

• To ensure that the children get maximum benefits of a conducive learning environment, we haveadopted innovative practices such as 10 hours a day school, running 6 days a week, 50 moreschool days each year, with only 21 students in each class.

• We take complete responsibility for our students in terms of their academic, nutritional andmedical needs.

PYDS- much more than just a school…

• Tie-ups with path breakers such as IAYP (International Award for Young People), tGELF (The GlobalEducation and Leadership Foundation), idiscoveri, GAP (Global Awareness Programme) forteaching excellence makes learning contemporary and multifaceted.

• The Institution is creating not merely qualified students but change agents who will eventuallytransform the mindset of this community and take it forward into the future.

All children deserve the education and support required to help them be independent, productive andsuccessful in their lives. In fact, children from abjectly poor backgrounds need unique support if theyare to break away from the vicious cycle that poverty creates.

Free Facilities to enable the under-served

What would count as a fairly good education facility for a child from a privileged background wouldbe gapingly insufficient for a financially weak child.

Food, clothing, transport, healthcare – a given for a child with fortunate circumstances, is a luxuryfor a poor one.

Before trying to impart ‘education’, it is imperative that we first secure the basic needs of a child. This has been the backdrop of our vision to provide comprehensive care and holistic education to the under privileged.

The free facilities that we provideour children are crucial for theirfuture success.

They are integral to giving ourchildren a level play field vis a vistheir privileged peers.

We believe that our children need a stable study environment to help them optimize the fruits oftheir labor. Overcrowded single room dwellings do not help self study. We, hence propose to buildtwo separate hostel facilities, one for 50 boys and one for 50 girls.

Homes our children come from…

Need for a Hostel Facility

Many of our children are not able to devote time towards studies at their homes due to variouslimitations. The lack of physical facilities, squalid living conditions, congested homes and theemotional stresses brought about by poverty keep the child distracted and unfocussed. The childneeds to be unencumbered by these burdens to be able to target best admissions and placements.A permanent solution for this impediment needs to be sought.

In view of this, we plan to build a hostel facility which would give a stable studying opportunity fordestitute children with virtually no resources. Two separate buildings would accommodate 50 boysand 50 girls from Class 8 to 12.

The hostel would also house a few children who have been rendered homeless by last year’s tragicUttarakhand Flash floods.
